5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC MUSIC! PERCY FAITH'S GIFT TO THE WORLD!.......2000-08-25

This incredible rendition of the Music of Mexico has been my very favorite album ever! I fell in love with this music from the very first moment that I heard it! I have worn out three vinyl copies of this album since it came out in 1957 and have waited until just this year for it to come out in the digital cd format. This is one of those incredible albums in which each and every number on both sides is excellently done! In my opinion, this album depicts "The Music of Mexico" at its best...it just doesn't get any better than this!! Percy Faith received an award from the Government of Mexico for this great work of art! Buying this album one can't possibly go wrong! It is simply a blue-chipper album that is in a league of its own! VIVA! ENJOY!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2006-12-15

What more can I add to what people have already said about this album?

NOTHING really.

Overall an excellent selection of music. Likely a must for any audio collection ... and perhaps a source of inspiration for those who can trully sink into this compilation.

I'm very glad to have gotten it, despite hoping to get the actual soundtrack instead. No regrets whatsoever!

I will eventually also get the soundtrack also; too much beautiful music there too.

5 out of 5 stars OH man................2006-02-03

Great album, but Jimmy Scott's version of "nothing compares 2 u" is in my opinion the best version of the song and my favorite. Unfortunately my girlfriend caught me listening and I wasn't holding any tears back. She started to cry as well. It's one of the few songs that can make me cry, feeling happy and sad at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, this one is very, very good.......2006-01-24

Pedro the Libra always has good music in his films, and now he's released of compilation of what he listen to while writing the films. Why not? I love Pedro's mind, and there is some standout stuff here! Just to have new copies of Goldfrapp's "Paper Bag" and Nina Simone's rollicking "My Way" is worth the purchase.

Rarely do I get compilations (I mean, I can make most of them better), but this one is fab.

5 out of 5 stars Two songs make it all worthwhile.......2004-05-16

A rare collection of songs with an interesting story behind. (Director Pedro Almodovar used the songs as inspiration while writing Talk to Her). Two songs should be mentioned: Nothing Compares 2 U song by Jimmy Scott and Qualsevol Nit Pot Sortir el Sol. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic album that tactfully cheers for sadness.......2004-04-06

Around the corner from the arrival of Pedro Almodovar's latest movie "La Mala Educacion" (The Bad Education), the time seems appropriate to revisit the music that accompanied him during the writing of "Talk to Her", contained in this compilation appropriately titled "Viva La Tristeza" (Long Live Sadness).

From the opening bars of Shirley Horn's infinitely sad opener ("because love is the saddest thing when it goes away..."), [hypnotic] tunes blend with outright melancholic music segments in many different languages and an assortment of musical styles resulting in an overall eclectic album that borders a sad cliff without ever walking over. How else can you cheer for sadness? Only music capable of feeding Almodovar's muses can take on such a delicate task.

Having grown up in Mexico these are the songs I remember played the way I remember them. If you like it straight without unnecessary embellishment by the artists in a clean recording I would get this album in a heartbeat or drumbeat as the case may be. There are a couple of famous sons missing but they cover 80% which is more than most. I am not an audiophile but if you just want to listen to some good mariachi and recognize some songs go for it.

Sure, there's no sign of foot stomping. But otherwise Viva México! comes across a lot like a Mexican version of Riverdance. What Bill Whelan did for Celtic music, conductor Luis Cobos and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra do for his country's son, including a sweep of the arm toward Spanish and pre-Hispanic roots. The title cut gives a good indication of the grand scope of Cobos's vision as flamenco vocals and pre-Columbian flutes interweave to establish the twin rivers of Mexico's greatest cultural influences. On "El Son de Veracruz," violins joyfully substitute for the lead voice traditionally taken by the harp, though Cobos appropriately gives the folk harp its moment in the footlights on "El Arbol de la Noche Triste." The conductor's last release, Mexicano, saluted Mexican music past and present, but Viva México! ups the ante in sheer ambition if nothing else. Isn't that a nod to the climax of Rossini's The Thieving Magpie in a song called "Huapango"? It all cries out for a road show... complete with massed folkloric dancers. --Bob Tarte

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Viva Mexico with Luis Cobos.......2000-08-24

World renowned orchestra director, Luis Cobos does it again with "Viva Mexico". This new album was recorded in its entirety in Abbey Road Studios in London, England. The album includes great tracks such as "Severiana" that is sung by the Hermanas Pulido in their native Mexican indiginous language. Luis Cobos produced the entire album and directed the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra for this production. This album gives life to various songs such as "Viva Mexico" and "Asi es Mexico", that impeccably reveal the beauty and mystery of Mexico through it's sounds and lyrics. This album is a must have if you enjoy classical music with a lot of cultural value to it.

5 out of 5 stars Tejano is still alive and Stampede shows why!.......2000-08-21

The title of the album says it all! On their sophomore effort Stampede follows the formula that was laid out on their debut album "Algo Nuevo." They manage to showcase all of the individual band members talents. All this while blending the sweet sounds of the accordion with keyboards and electric guitar/ bajo sexto.

The album features the first single, cumbia "Aqui Estoy Yo." This song displays that a mix of keyboards and accordion along with Alex De Leon's abilty to make a song into a story. In this case a man's profession of love to an old flame. Other singles from the album are the ranchera "Otra Vez", "Caminando Sin Rumbo" and cumbia "Acuerdate de Mi." Every song on the album has the qualities of a hit single.

Stampede also shows some of their influences in their Mariachi rendition of "La Misma" and feature their rock influences on "No Tengas Miedo."

This album displays influences of the early work of Emilio and Jay Perez influences. If you enjoy any of the sounds of "Classic Tejano" you will enjoy and appreicate this album. It is a definite must have for any lover of "Tejano music." Stampede should continue to be a player in Tejano music for years to come.

I have just listened to the whole CD and except for three tracks I think Pippo's singing is excellent. We have to listen to this CD for what it really is.A re-recording of live performances dating back almost 50 years. We can't expect today's digital quality recordings sound. On the first track,we hear Che Gelida Manina from a 31 year old Pippo who obviously was having a bad night, which is not uncommon with most singers.Tracks 18 & 19 definitely show Pippo in decline, but I didn't find band 18 as bad as another reviewer did.I counted only two vocal flaws. The rest of the aria is sung not that bad for a declining Pippo.Track 19 is sung well, but as in track 18 the voice sounds like it's getting tired. The rest of the singing on the CD,I enjoyed, especially the Addio Alla Madre.I would say that is my favorite on the CD.In my opinion,it's an ecellent CD for the price and it does contain some excellent singing and also is of historical value.

          4 out of 5 stars A musical history.......1999-12-12

I purchased this recording when it first became available. It is an important for as a historical document on one of the greatest tenors in the history of opera. Yes, his voice has a very apparent decline. And yes track 18 (Una furitiva lagrima) has cracked notes and other obvious vocal flaws. What the other reviewer has missed (but the audience didn't - which is why the aria was greeted with such enthusiasm) was the passion, the emotion that Di Stefano put into his singing. I make no excuses, I am an ardent Di Stefano devotee. His early singing was glorious, pure beauty. His later singing lost it's pure beauty, but gained passion and emotion.

This disc is important because it traces this transition.

3 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard Di Stefano fans.......1999-03-24

I picked up this CD on a whim. The liner notes are useful, and describe the meteoric rise and fall of DiStefano's career, his temperment and ego.

The CD covers a period of only 11 years, but the deterioration of his voice during that period is frightening. Track 1 (1962) 'Che Gelida Manina' showcases a much fresher voice, but he strains terribly for the high 'C' and never even gets close. Track 18 (1963) 'Una furtiva lagrima' is full of embarrassments- chokes, flat notes, etc. - yet the live audience eats it up.

Di Stefano had stopped singing by the time I became an opera fan. This disk clearly shows why. Being a famous operatic tenor is not always about vocal quality (James McCracken, anyone?), and Di Stefano was certainly an exciting siger. There is some beautiful music on this CD, but I find it to be of mostly historical interest.
