5 out of 5 stars From a music lover, not a critic.......2007-04-10

Many of these performances are new to me. That is the beauty of being 59 years old and still learning. My knowledge of classical music is based on what moves me. While others talk about all the other versions and other conductors, I just want to let other people know that these recordings give me great pleasure. While some may find Michel Beroff to be less than adequate, I enjoy his renditions of the piano concertos. I have heard other renditions and find that they all have their places. These concertos move me a great deal. That is my only criteria.

5 out of 5 stars Masur - Champion of Liszt.......2003-12-19

Before he became the embattled leader of the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur made a name for himself by making brilliant recordings with the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, these Liszt Orchestral Works foremost among them. It is delightful to have these recordings in print again, and for them all to be collected on seven discs in an inch-thick paper box set is even better. Masur's performances of the "Tone Poems" in particular rank among the best of all-time, along with Haitink and Golovanov in my opinion (see my review of the latter on his "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" title). Also included in this set are the works for Piano and Orchestra, and while Michel Beroff's renditions don't quite measure up to my favorite accounts by Arrau, Cliburn, Janis, Katchen, Richter or Zimerman, they are certainly first-rate. Oddly, my only complaint is that EMI seems to have taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" box are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves.

    5 out of 5 stars Vocal Companions.......2002-07-17

The equal strength and drama that Olga Borodina & Dmitri Hvorostovsky can create together is outstanding. Well matched. I got this after being so impressed with Borodina as Amneris several years ago at the Met. Her characterization was rivetting. Mr. Hvorostovsky displays similar talents in the refreshing "Largo al factotum".
    Both free spirits.

5 out of 5 stars two great voices make a great match.......2001-06-14

A marvelous mix of solo arias and duets, these two fabulous voices blend beautifully, and have here chosen an interesting selection to delight our ears.

Rossini: Dmitri's glorious voice, and musical sensibilities, manage to bring a freshness even to the perhaps too familiar "Largo al Factotum"...compared with his '92 recording of this, his Italian here is even crisper, and voice even more honey-golden. Olga sings the part of Rosina (as it was originally written) in her wonderful warm mezzo, doing the famous "Una Voce Poco Fa" to perfection.

Donizetti: Sumptuously melodic and wonderfully sung, Olga's "O Mio Fernando" is exquisite. Rimsky-Korsakov: Though his operas are little known, these selections from "The Tsar's Bride" may make you want to hear more, and if you don't already have them, get all the available Dmitri CDs !

Saving the best for last, Saint-Saens' "J'ai Gravi la Montagne" from "Samson et Dalila" is sensational. Their voices really shine in this gorgeous duet...it's a spectacular piece.

The English Chamber Orchestra led by Patrick Summers does an excellent job here (especially in the Saint-Saens) and the little "libretto" is in the original sung language (the Russian in cyrillic) and with an English translation.

As a huge Dmitri fan, and an admirer of Olga Borodina, I find this well-rounded CD of arias/duets make for some very satifying listening.

    5 out of 5 stars Sensational Duet.......2001-04-08

This Borodina & Hvorostovsky team created at most dream like sound here. I'd like to hear more of great duet like this but not much chance, no wonder this CD has been a hit since it's release. We are really hungry for good Bell Canto operas. Why there isn't much available? I had a pleasure of attending concert opera performance of La Favorita at the Carnegie Hall in March. Mr. Hvorostovsky sung King Alfonso and he was absolutely wonderful. I thought he was 100 times better than I imagined. If Donizetti could hear, he would be very happy. Complete recording of Tsar's bride is available and I really appreciate if they release complete version of Barbiere and Favorita by these sensational current artists together.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the wonderful chemistry here!.......1999-06-06

A delightful concept album indeed. Borodina and Hvorostovsky are indeed more than competent equals. If the recordings of the 'Tsar's Bride' music are any indication, they should fill up opera houses and become better known in a very few years. Hooray for the young Russians!

    5 out of 5 stars French Rarities..........2007-06-20

    .
Monumental Violin Sonata in c#, written in the last year of the Great War (1918) by protégé of César Franck, Pierre de Bréville.

Bonus fruity Canteloube art nouveau of 1906.

Doubleplus bonus proto-cubist Cezanne cover art.

David Hurwitz effuses, "I have never understood why in the first half of the 20th century the French didn't take their entire avant-garde and dump the whole lot of them next door in Darmstadt or some such place, the better to enjoy such neglected figures as Bréville or Canteloube. Certainly no country except Germany has been more dismissive of the talents of its own conservative but well trained and exceedingly polished school of late Romantic composers. Under the circumstances then, this disc represents a welcome addition to the catalog. Pierre de Bréville (1861-1949), to the extent he's known at all, is remembered as a songwriter, but this epic (37-minute) Violin Sonata places him squarely in the school of Franck, Chausson, and above all, Magnard. Its four big movements have a symphonic weight, though the instrumental writing is typically French in its easy fluency and melodic appeal (the second subject of the first movement is particularly luscious).

Cantaloube's Suite: Dans la montagne also has four movements: En plein vent, Le soir, Jour de fête, and Dans le bois au printemps. Although a very early work dating from around the turn of the last century, the folk-tinged Festival Day clearly foreshadows the Songs of the Auvergne, while the opening of the last movement is pure Debussy (of the Préludes). Both works are beautifully played by Philippe Graffin and Pascal Devoyon, with only two small caveats. In the Bréville, Graffin's vibrato in high positions has a tendency to cloy (at least in my opinion), and both players could have attacked the work with a broader range of dynamic contrasts. On the other hand their intimate approach, with the recording balance slightly favoring the violin, perfectly suits the more delicate Cantaloube. In any event, fans of French music from this period will need no further recommendation from me. A beautiful disc."

The noted music critic, conductor, and author Donald Francis Tovey described Liszt's Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne (What You Hear on the Mountaintop) as a series of "introductions to introductions," and truth to tell, it does go on. But then again, all of Liszt's symphonic poems are experiments of one sort or another. He invented the form, and although he may not have gotten every one of them absolutely right (meaning there are dull spots here and there), there are more than enough interesting moments to keep your ears occupied. Just make sure that you take them one at a time, and don't use them as background music. What Liszt does with the tunes is more important than the tunes themselves, so you must pay close attention. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A great deal on some good music!.......2007-05-18

This is a very nice Liszt set, with performances by the reliably fine London Symphony Orchestra. I ordered the disc set from Chimera Books and Music on 5/7/07 and received it 5/10/07. Fast, accurate service, a good product and a remarkably low price ... what more could one ask?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but pales in comparison with Mazur.......2004-09-07

I enjoyed these poems but the "authenticity" was lacking in my opinion. Liszt is one of those composers beloved by the public but scorned bt the "experts" - another case of being so smart you don't know anything. The Symphonic Poems are one of those ultra-Romantic creations that seemed to spring fully-grown from the pen. Each one is related to a story or mood, although with the level of knowledge from today's education few would recognize let alone understand the connection.

How many people could even tell you who Prometheus or Goethe or Schiller was much less how the piece related to them? Les Prelude was good (not great) as was Orpheus. Mazeppa, the most dramatic of the set, came off sultry rather than scintillating.

Then again, I am comparing everything to the incredible recording by Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Those two sets are the apex of Liszt recordings (MHS only).

      4 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2002-03-04

While the recordings on this CD are nothing to complain about, the quality on several of the songs is slightly staticky, and sounds mildly muffled (not as much ambience and echoing as needed to make these songs have full effect, especially on Mazeppa). Unless you really want the Symphonic Poem No. 1, you'd do better to stick with other recordings. The first of the poems is very hard to find and this is the reason I bought this CD. Unfortunately, it falls under the staticky song category.

5 out of 5 stars See for yourself.......2000-01-06

Liszt is one of the most underestimated composers of all time, but I'm sure that anyone who listens carefully to recordings like this can change his mind. The only problem I see in understanding this pieces is that their richness (in all senses) make it necessary to listen to them again in order to understand them more deeply. Yet I can say that the exact same thing is true with Beethoven, Bach, Mahler, and all the other hyper-estimated composers. Looking closer, the problem must be that this pieces are almost never played, so it's difficult to know them before you buy a record like this. I say, don't let yourself go with the general prejudice against the Lisztian inovations : the two recordings by Haitink and the other two by Kurt Masur with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester are a necessity to every curious listener. Each poem is a masterpiece, and you'll hear the orchestra sound like you have never imagined.
