5 out of 5 stars A FIRMLY PLANTED GANJA PLANT.......2004-01-16

Of all the non-jamaican reggae artists I've heard, 10ft. may very well be the most impressive. The tracks have an old-school feel to them while still sounding fresh and new. There's a few members of John Brown's Body involved in this project but I think that the Plant sounds even more authentic. If you like roots, then please pick this up!

4 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE !!!!!.......2001-10-16

If you're a fan of John Brown's Body, you simply must find a place for this CD in your collection. A collaboration between Craig Welsh and various musicians including members of JBB, these tracks will round out your reggae collection with an alternative but rootsy feel and sound. Great lyrics by Welsh and The Plant. The riffs are really phat in places. The keyboarding is simply AWESOME - traditional but fresh. In fact, for me, the keyboarding, combined with some serious, infectious and psychodelic dub, provides some of the most memorable highlights. And although I'm not sure if it's my system or not, but my recording features some very welcome feedback on the phatter base line.
Key Tracks: "Born Free" (not sure who's on vocals but his voice sounds like Floyd Lloyd - a Jamaican ska favorite), "Long Time Ago" (unsure of lead vocals, fantastic background vocals almost sounding like the Gladiators or Israel Vibration), "Time I Know" (a rootsy phsychodelic ode to Jah with Kevin Kinsella on lead vocals), "Soul Love" (rootsy track with an R&B feel and some nice harp) "Pure Sugar" (very JBB-like sound featuring Kevin Kinsella and Elliot Martin on vocals). "Jah Will Go On", "Two Bulls" and "Hillside Airstrip" provide some trippy dub. Turn the lights out, the volume up and the bass all the way to the right - THIS IS PHAT!
If you ever get a chance to see John Brown's Body live - do it. I've seen them twice at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA and thoroughly enjoyed myself. One of the few bands that have mastered the fine art of live dub without producing waves of electronic dribble. There is word of a forthcoming album, but unfortunately I also here their label, Shanachie, recently dropped them. No worries, another will surely pick them up soon. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The best American roots/dub you've ever heard............2001-03-15

This album knocked me down---Spawning from members of the incredible Northeast rootical band John Brown's Body (JBB), this studio dub can be compared to the greatest. From top to bottom I was continually blown away--if you didn't know any better you'd think it was layed down at Tubby's in '79. Even the beautiful cover artwork (as well as the theme) represents JA. Take special note of track 2--as the title implies it's PURE SUGAR! This tune utilizes the vocals of JBB members Kevin and Elliot, and shows the world how talented they truly are. TIME I KNOW, WALKEY WALK TALL, and the psychedelic TWO BULLS stand out as phenomenal, but there is not one weak track--I have already purchased 2 of these discs!!!--WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION IS DUE.--Big up to Craig Welsch for his IMMENSE skills, to JBB and associated members, and to Ithaca/Boston for keepin' it real. BUY THIS ALBUM!!! JAH GUIDANCE AND BLESSINGS!!! ONE LOVE!!

3 out of 5 stars Rises Above the Novelty Premise.......2006-06-13

That this album's covers are mostly of Sixties and Seventies classics is its saving grace. Consistantly great song choices coupled with a few inspired vocal and instrumental performances make this collection rise above its somewhat "novelty" nature. Purely entertaining, and certainly not pretending to be anything it's not.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best quality .......2005-08-11

I just can't get over the "hissing" in the background, it sounds like a recording from the 50's (monostereo). Based on the track listing, it seems like an excellent compilation. But the repetitive & similar reggae beats create a droning, monotonous album. Makes me prefer the original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars...........2004-01-28

The general sound/feel of the album is great. However, the quality of the recording on several tracks (female vocalists in each case) seemed imbalanced -- phrases seemed to be missing. I don't know if I got a bad disk, or if the music just overpowered the words.

Product Description

Bass Chalice, is 10 Ft. Ganja Plants third release on ROIR. Their first, entitled Hillside Airstrip, and second, Midnight Landing, were both uniformly hailed by the music press (see next page). This time around, things are a bit different. First off, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant will be touring! Before this, the only chance anyone had to see them live was at an impromptu show, usually in the Boston area. There have only been a handful of these gigs and their frenzied, sweaty nature has left audiences clamoring for more. In early 2006, they will get it10 Ft. Ganja Plants first ever tour! Beyond this, Bass Chalice sees 10 Ft. stripping away a bit of the mystery surrounding the bands lineup and actually letting us disclose a very special guest appearance by the legendary 70s Jamaican vocal reggae group The Meditations! Their first two albums, Message from the Meditations and Wake Up are downright, stone-cold reggae classics that must be heard. On Bass Chalice they grace To Each with a spellbinding vocal performance! The Meditations are a fitting addition to the album because Bass Chalice, at its heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts at Motown and Stax) where a song was typically written, learned, and recorded live in a single session, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation and you begin to get the picture. This is good news for a genre that seems to be gathering steam in recent months. Apart from big releases on ROIR by Dub Trio, Bush Chemists & Dr. Israel, other bands have been making their mark on stages around the country: Matisyahu, Future Pigeon, Dub Nomads, Dub Gabriel, Dub As A Weapon, Jah Division, and (on a different level) Damian Junior Gong Marley. Dub & roots reggae is more popular than ever and the 10 Ft. Ganja Plant army is poised to make a big, smoky impression.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another Solid Album.......2006-04-07

Bass Chalice is yet another really solid album from a group that I think deserves more attention. If you like their first two albums then you definitely need to pick this one up. Bass Chalice, for the most part, holds true to form to their 70's roots style with modern touches that make this group so great to listen to. That being said, I feel that this album is more modern sounding than the other two. They have added some horns into the mix (ie. "Suits and Ski Masks") that add a jazzier feel as well as losing a bit of that really rootsy studio sound that they have captured so well in the past. The first track "Blood Money" has stood out as the best track for me and creates an almost impossible standard for the rest of the disk to live up to. I agree with the last review that not every track is strong although still a must-have if you are a fan. I can't wait until they go on tour.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Irie.......2006-02-28

Bass Chalice is, in my opinon, 10ft ganja plants best album I was disappointed in Midnight landing, very pleased with hillside airstrip, but bas chalice has to top them with out a doubt. Like its title bass chalice as some very original and enjoyable bass lines. "blood money" is a great song with a very cool bass line and doesnt go on for to long the same goes for "bass chalice" which has an uplifteing beat and finishes the cd perfecttly. the reason it doesnt get a 5 is because not every song is all that great. Overall If you are a roots fan and treasure well written bass lines bass chalice should be in your roots reggae collection

Over the course of four CDs, this is the essential musical history of the loudest island in the world, with the emphasis on essential. It starts in the time before ska, and brings it all up to the dominance of dancehall in the '90s. Along the way there's ska, rocksteady, reggae, and dub; 95 great tracks, every single one a classic. About the only major artist not represented is Lee Perry, and his productions sneak in there. Steve Barrow's notes will carry you through the story. This is about as perfect as they come, in both form and content. Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Proof that there is no god..........2006-08-30

... is the fact that this set has been allowed to go OOP. Read the other 23 reviews; this is the ABSOLUTE best collection of Jamaican music on (or now, off) the market. People would come to my home and hear this set, and the next day, buy it.

What a shame.

5 out of 5 stars AN EYE OPENER.......2005-10-06

This box set really opened my eyes, my ears and my mind to the infinite possibilities within Jamaican music. It is without a doubt the most important set of discs I own. As the title suggests, it is the history of Jamaican music in one handy box. Music for the body, the mind, and the soul. The liner notes are exceptional, invaluable even. If you have the money, by all means get this set. Classic songs by essential artists. VERY HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Foundational ska reggae from the island that started it.......2005-06-01

This set is the best of several sets I have collected with early ska and reggae music. Read the list of songs: early Maytals, Wailers, Bob Marley, and more. This collection has historical value and all that. But most importantly it is very listenable and danceable.

5 out of 5 stars The King of Reggae compilations.......2004-09-22

I bought this set when I was in the infancy of my interest in Jamaican music and Jamaica. Every song is truly special in a historical and musical sense! I started off listening to Bob Marley and then found this gem.
I first listened to this set one night, soon after I came back from Jamaica, whilst sipping Blue Mountain coffee and burning incense(only!)---I was back in Jamaica... I still love the set even after listening to it a hundred times. If you are looking for sappy, cheesy generic reggae music you're looking in the wrong place. Once you buy the set, you will keep it forever--A real classic. Enjoy, Mon!

5 out of 5 stars An AMAZING BOX SET.......2004-04-05

I bought this CD set on a whim in 1993. It is one of the most amazing impulse purchases I have ever made!!! You hear the development of a nation's music. Great written info and pics accompany the 4 CDs - it adds color and background. But to fully appreciate the roots of ska and reggae, you just kick back and listen to the cds, from song one on cd one. Truly a journey.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial roots collection from Bim Sherman.......2002-03-30

One of the first reggae albums I've bought, and one that I go back to over and over again. The album is a collection of Bim Sherman roots reggae from the 70s, and contains hits such as Golden Stool, 10000 Ethiopians and My Whole World (whose d&b mix got 1st place in the brit chart).

A must have for any serious roots reggae collection.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Spellbinding.......2004-12-23

Peter Tosh's performance at the Jamaica World Music Festival in the Fall of 1982 is one of his finest performances, perhaps even surpassing his legendary show on "Complete Captured Live" recorded a year later at the Greek Theater in L.A. during the "Mama Africa" tour. Each song is astounding, but the thick, strong, slower rendition of "Coming In Hot" and the the rendition of "Get Up, Stand Up" clearly stand above the rest.

Perhaps most memorable about this show, however, were Tosh's moving speaches to the crowd, showing his integrity, strength, religiosity, and Humanity unlike some regular preacher, speaking about ganja, reincarnation, injustice, his own strengths, and his place alongside the common, oppressed citizens of the World. Truly, Peter's way with words earned him a special place in the pages of musical, sociopolitical, and spiritual history. Both speeches contain an instrumental backing mixed in by Karl Pitterson before the album's release in 2002. In closing, this was a concert for the ages, and cannot afford to be missed by any Tosh fan, reggae fan, or well-rounded music fan. I can guarentee you will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow Wow.......2004-03-21

I just got mine today (3/20/04) and wow this was beyond words. Peter Tosh speaks the truth. Even if YOU dont belive he is, the way he delivers his speech is Fantastic, I would rather hear him speak than go to church and hear a preacher speak (boring!!) This CD is worth getting, although I personaly did not enjoy the instrumental track behind his speech, I still thought it was a little creative. So I recomend this Cd. Im just hoping they could release this concert IN ITS COMPLETE ENTIRTY (with no music backing his speech) on DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars What a Show!.......2002-09-19

I was at this show in Montego Bay in 1982. It was one of the most compelling performances I have ever seen. Peter Tosh was claiming the Reggae throne, which he believed was his after the death of Bob. He waited through the early morning hours and did not perform until he came on with the rising sun, as the final act of this excellent three day concert. I missed my flight home becuase of his late perfomance and wound up staying on the island for a while. The audio quality is 1st rate and the performance is masterfull. Would love to see the full video released on DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Bush Doctor.......2002-07-28

Of all the live Tosh Cds this is my Favorite. The sound quality is excellent and Peter performance comes alive with the rising of the sun. THis Version of Bush Doctor is the most powerful I have heard and for that track alone it is worth the price. Some of this concert footage can be seen in the Steeping Razor the REd X tapes with Peter slashing a sword through the air while performing......I wish theywould release this concert on DVD since someone has this footage. Anyway, it is a stellar Live performance....Long Live Peter TOSH!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Tosh.......2002-01-24

This is another great Peter Tosh live disc. The final album of a 3 album Tosh trilogy. All 3 are must have cd's. This concert has Peter in top form performing in JA. The audio quality is perfect. The songs are great, the band is great Peter is great and this cd is great. A must have

5 out of 5 stars a superb way to get familiar with the vocal groups.......2000-09-20

For fans of the vocal groups that emerged during the rocksteady and early reggae periods, this cd is a gift from Jah himself.

Featuring the greats like the Congos, the amazing Abyssinians, the lesser known but very important Techniques, the lush harmonies of the Mighty Diamonds, the Paragons, even a track from the 1st Black Uhuru lineup, this cd will be a welcome addition to an aspiring, or even an established reggae collection.

Use the collection as a springboard towards immersing yourself in the vocal glories of these famed (though in some cases very overlooked) groups. Beautiful stuff.

i admit it, i've been binge-ing for the past six months....on 60s jamaican ska and rock steady. i can't git enough of its simple rhythms, tastey horn lines, and overall smooth feel. this album, as the title suggests, is all about the early sounds of jamaican two, three, and four part vocal harmony. i've yet to come across another compilation which includes any of these tracks. if you're like me and are digging deeply for new music from this window in music history, pick up this record for your collection; you too will dig it deeply!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet tracks that maybe you haven't heard before........1999-04-26

Many of the best Reggae albums from the late '70s and early '80s are the compilations. "The Harder they Come", the Mango compilation discs "98 degrees in the shade" and "Jammin" and the "Rockers" soundtrack albums are all great records, but there tends to be a lot of overlap in the songs among them. This one is different. Alternatingly stridently political and disarmingly quirky/sexy these are 10 songs that I hadn't heard anywhere else, although I immediately felt that I had. Artists not listed on the Amazon page are The Wailing Souls-with a Marley sound-a-like singer, Israel Vibration, as Irie as anything doing Give I Grace, and the Abbysinians with a soulful mournful Leggo Beast.
