Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
A Heavenly Voice.......2007-07-31
PBS series, "Distant Shores" with Peter Davison and this backgroun music came up. I had to search for the voice and the composer. It took me awhile to find Josh Groban. I am very old(veery!), studied music for years and he has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
From such a young man it seems unbelievable. He reminds me of beautiful voices of yesteryear- a pleasure to remember.

Consider the curious fate of singer-songwriter Laura Nyro's 1968 big-label bow: though it contained no less than three songs ("Stoned Soul Picnic," "Sweet Blindness," and "Eli's Coming") that became hits (the first two for Fifth Dimension, the last for Three Dog Night), Nyro's own endlessly influential collection barely dented the Top 200. And in an era of supposed pop emancipation and enlightenment, Nyro was booed off the stage at the vaunted Monterey Pop Festival a year earlier. Those facts merely hint at the true gifts and stubborn instincts of an artist who took her cue for hook writing from the Brill Building's prime, then seamlessly fused it to her far-ranging passions for soul, jazz, gospel, and no small amount of personal drama. Carole King was seldom this exotic and compelling, nor Joni Mitchell so pop perfect. "Once It Was Alright Now (Farmer Joe)" even recalls Brian Wilson's most ambitious musical gambits, its suite format playfully interspersing three different tunes and styles, standing the standard verse-chorus-verse form on its head in the bargain. Long a treasured musical touchstone for other artists (Nyro influenced everyone from Phoebe Snow to Tori Amos), this reissued edition now contains beautiful, spare solo demos for "Lu," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and "Emmie" as bonus tacks, along with newly penned liner notes. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Did not know about Timer.......2007-07-24
It is widely accepted that her earthy musical style and candid sexual imagery are about her men, e.g. Eli's Coming,""December's Boudoir," and "The Confession."
Her bi-sensual style in "Emmie" has become accepted as an open expression of same-sex attraction on Laura's part. The actual person, if a particular person, is still an intriguing poser.
She was reported to have said at concerts that the song "Timer" was about one of her pets. The opening musical phrasing conjures a pace and the lyrics evoke an imagery of a dog walk.
The song is her musings, e.g. "you're a fine one Timer you got me walking thru the gates of Space"
But, who was "My lady..., she broke down, she got up, she let go."?
Who was the muse for "I like her song and if the song goes minor - I won't mind"
Who is being put on notice in "And Timer knows the lady's gonna love again if you don't love me" and "The lady rambles never more if you love me true" and
"if you love me true - I'll spend my life with you - you and Timer."?
Is it the woman who was the inspiration for "Désiree" on the album Gonna take a miracle?
Is it the young woman silhouetted with Laura on the back cover of the vinyl album jacket of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession?
The silhouetted picture is worth 1,000 confessions and the image is an easy find on-line.
The songs are a treat, a treasure trove of her musical precocity and lyrical poetry. Even though the picture is not on the back of the CD, the re-mastered songs beat the dust off the vinyl.
by Ralph, let's call her Ralph.
CRACKED CASE.......2007-07-03
quintessential 60s sound!.......2007-05-11
and her voice is the perfect match for her lyrics and melodies. nyro was a prodigious songwriter and it seems odd that she wouldn't have the same size of success with her tunes others had. but that could only be because columbia was always at a loss on how to commodify a woman until mariah carey came along. of course that could be because carey is a willing participant in her own overexposure.
but they always manage to get the best at one time or another--aretha, janis joplin, mahalia jackson, doris day--and laura nyro can join that list many times over with a collection like 'eli'.
I'll Take It To My Desert Island Any Day.......2007-04-05
So why do I expect to catch flack amongst the Nyro faithful? Well despite all the superlatives heaped upon Eli, I find little else in her subsequent works to get very excited about. New York Tenderberry wich followed Eli some ten months later was dark and brooding by comparison. With the exception of Time And Love, most of the melodies seemed ackward and plodding. Some I find downright depressing. Christmas & Beads of Sweat followed the same pattern. In fact it wasn't until "Gonna Take A Miracle", a collection of sixties soul staples, that I found myself once again enjoying her music. Collaborating with Labelle, aka Pattie Labelle & The Blue Bells on classic material like Jimmy Mack, Spanish Harlem, Nowhere To Run and You Really Got A Hold On Me truly was a miracle.
Again, I know most will disagree with me, but I never felt that any of her other albums ever quite achieved the heights of Eli. I've played it to death and it never comes up short for me. True it's just one album, but I'll take it to my desert island any day.

Did Skid Row get back together? this is some great 80's metal all the way!.......2007-07-12
This is a great time to be an 80's metalhead. Good, pure metal is making a comeback (thanks to the Showdown, 3 Inches of Blood, Hammerfall, Dream Evil and the like) This disc has great guitar work, lots of double bass drum and a very clear sound.
The only thing I don't like is all the profanity. I understand angst and emotion, and can understand when sometimes a profanity just expresses everything you need to say. But these guys throw F bombs around carelessly and makes them sound stupid and illiterate.
If they could write some smart lyrics to go with this awesome metal music, I'd have given them a 5 star review, no problem!!

Never ceasing to be amazing, Josh fills every note with a musicality and passion that many young pop stars seem to be incapable of commandeering.
Josh's musicality clearly shines through as he shows his ability to not only sing like an angel but also compose lyrics, orchestrate arrangements, and accompany himself on the piano.
A must for fans of his first album and his unique style.

French director François Ozon's international hit manages to spoof both convoluted film whodunits and overblown Hollywood musicals: Agatha Christie as envisioned by Baz Luhrmann. One of the romp's chief joys is having eight of modern French cinema's most accomplished actresses take their turns in elaborately staged song and dance numbers, performances that compose this soundtrack's first half. Those showcases range from Ludivine Sagnier's loopy, '60s a-go-go take on "Papa T'es Plus dans L'Coup" through Fanny Ardant's breezy Parisian jazz, Isabelle Huppert's world-weary "Message Personnel," and Catherine Deneuve's tango-tinged "Toi Jamais." Coupled with Krishna Levy's masterfully earnest orchestral score (which offers a few fond nods to such '40s Bernard Herrmann romantic classics as Jane Eyre), the film's campy delights are crucially delivered deadpan and with nary a knowing wink, a tack that ensures its musical triumph--tongue firmly in cheek, or otherwise. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
8 Women is the story of 8 women trapped in the house of a murdered man. One of the women is the culprit, and suspicious and mistrust run wild as they try to outwit and out maneuver one another. This French hit by filmmaker Francois Ozon has wowed audiences across Europe and the U.S. Academy Award winner Catherine Deneuve leads the star-studded cast, which boasts the best-known and most talented women of French cinema. Eight songs off the soundtrack feature the vocal talents of each of these eight actresses. The score is by Krishna Levy. Rhino. 2002.Customer Reviews:

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10
but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.
but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.
Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20
Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.
The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)
Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.
Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12
Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.
Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02
Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

Singer-Songwriter O'Brian Strikes a Nerve.......2005-04-13
Opening with the spiritual Something Almost Sacred, he discovers the depth of a father's love for his son and how it profoundly affected him. The second track, Roots and Wings, is an anthem to his child, a story of giving up material things for the greater gifts of love.
My Father's Son is the tale of O'Brian's Irish parents' immigration to the U.S. from County Donegal in the North of Ireland and how a young boy wanted to grow to be everything his father was. It showcases O'Brian's beautiful tenor and features Dublin-born Ken O'Malley on mandolin.
O'Brian strikes a nerve with Catholic Boys, an unsanitized account of abuse at a Catholic boys school and its haunting, everlasting effect on the children.
The tracks feature O'Brian on vocals, piano and organ and a host of wonderful guest artists. At first glance, O'Brian may remind you of a Stephen Bishop or a Billy Joel, but the niche is clearly O'Brian's own. He speaks from experience whether it's a rock track or a slow slide like Down to Earth with its jewelbox imagery.
He can evoke a country feel, like in Angel of Mercy, with its "Halo 'round the moon...mist across a black lagoon," a lazy eve on the bayou, reminiscing about a love long lost.
Then comes a sad tale of a friendship unbound in Two Friends, followed by a thought-provoking challenge of self-analysis in The Analytical Mind---where he isn't afraid to open Pandora's box.
The Box, it turns out, is arguably O'Brian's best ballad, but it's not on this cd. Check out "From the Heart of Studio A, the Folkscene Collection," released in 1994, for O'Brian's live on-air performance. This cd also has exciting live performances by many great artists, such as Richard Thompson, Dave Alvin, Mary Black, Lowen and Navarro, and Iris DeMent, among others. It's available at Amazon! The Folkscene Collection: From The Heart Of Studio A
Dillon O'Brian is also well-known as a writer for other artists, such as Bonnie Raitt, who recorded O'Brian's beautiful Fearless Love, featured in the award-winning movie "Sideways." He has written for and recorded with Lowen and Navarro, Stephen Bruton, and Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps, and many others.
He is co-author (with Jay Ferguson), of the theme for the hit TV series "The Office," authored the theme to "My Name is Earl," and was nominated for an Emmy in 2006 with songwriting partner Bob Thiele for the theme to Disney's "The Buzz on Maggie."
