To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.Customer Reviews:

The artist behind Facing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the late Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovely that it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovingly assembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World is comprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as well as tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includes versions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "Mona Lisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn at harmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatingly beautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" are especially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard in Meet Joe Black and Finding Forrester--may never again sound so pure. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Released in 1996, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known as IZ is much a part of Hawaii as the beautiful blue oceans. Every cut on this album you can hear the power and majesty that is IZ, which gets into the listeners' heart and soul. "In Dis Life" serves-up a mix of Hawaiian language standards, two hit tunes from local artists, several fresh new songs and a Jawaiian remake of "Starting All Over Again". A must have if you are a fan of IZ's other material.Customer Reviews:

I'd say by far his best album........2006-05-14
As for the selections on this CD, I particularly enjoy the title song, "Wai'alae," and his rendition of the Hawaiian Style Band's "Living in a Sovereign Land." The contemporary tunes show a different side of him. "'Opae E" has been a favorite of mine forever. I also like his jazzy rendition of "Aloha Ku'u Pua" and his medley of "Na Ka Puio" and "Keyhole Hula," otherwise known as "Kauoha Mai."
The only song that I think is just okay is "Yokozuna," at least for now, but maybe it'll grow on me eventually. I don't hate it though, just not one of my favorites. Maybe that's just because I would choose Hawaiian language songs over contemporary if I had to make a choice.
Please get this CD as well as all his others.

Several days later we were in a shop and once again I heard his voice over the stores speakers and had to have the CD. This is classic Hawaiian music that brings me back to Hawaii every time I hear his music...and that is far since I live in New York.
Several years later I looked him up on the Internet and was heartbroken to learn he passed away...a week after we left Hawaii. I have purchased every CD as well as DVD's that have become available.
IZ died with a huge heart and the world has lost a great singer that believed in Hawaii and the land that was meant to be. You would be surprise to hear how many times you hear his music in movies, commercials and shows. A performer that will be remembered forever.

So long, Beethoven! (Not really, but this is a whole new wonderful addition to my listening life.) I think IZ belongs in every top-notch music portfolio.
Hit or Miss.......2006-05-07
When Israel is doing his beachboy-style songs (loose, comedic, played solo on the ukulele or with minimal overdubs) he provides a glimpse of the old Hawaiian spirit so lacking in contemporary Hawaiian music. Which is to say that most present-day Hawaiian music is so serious, that it almost sounds like Contemporary Christian Music. Israel's versions of "Kamalani" and "I Ke Alo O Iesu" are slick, sappy and overwrought with sentimentality. In other words, they are the opposite of the loose, mellow and cool sound inherent to beachcomber cuts like "Tengoku Kara Kaminari" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island."
Yeah, that's right... this strong native Hawaiian voice tackles the theme from Sherwood Schwartz's tacky, '60s go-go, beachcomber television show (starring TV beatnik Bob Denver). But in doing so, Kamakawiwo'ole puts his own spin on the song, first bringing an oceanside humor that was not on the original theme recording for the show's credits. But halfway through "Theme from Gilligan's Island," Israel turns the song into a loose politcal statement, as he reminds the listener that he has no need to come back from THIS island... back to a place where there are cars, pollution and government corruption. In that sense, the song connects on many levels, even though it seems like a silly idea at first glance.
"E Ala E" -- the opening track on this album -- is a fiercly political cry that works as a personal plead for Hawaiian civil rights and sovereignty over their own land. The field recordings of Hawaiian demonstrators marching and chanting in the background gives the song another layer of depth.
All in all, there's enough goodness going on here to get you past the sappy material. But there are better Kamakawiwo'ole albums out there, including his entire back catalogue with the Makaha Sons of Niihau, plus IZ's first two solo albums.

Best Music On The Planet.......2005-10-27
This live cd by Bruddah Iz is something very special. It's something that would make me proud to broadcast into space, traveling until it's received and pondered by an intelligent lifeform. It's powerful, beautiful music, presented by a kind-hearted man. This is absolutely how I would like our planet to be represented. Perhaps this is why I frequently listen to Iz after I've overdosed on the complexities and harshness of living, or the bad vibes seen on the news.
Someone below stated that there is too much talking, and not enough music. I don't get it. I have everything that Iz ever created, including cds, dvds and videos, and treasure every single one. The fact that he does talk is what is special here. Iz is a generous window into an indigenous culture, and he shares this like no other. But, the cd is mostly about the music, and I never gained a sense that this is chatty or unmusical. I love hearing him talk, especially since he has moved on and the talking has stopped. At the end of Alone In IZ World there is a secret track, where he is talking about having trouble breathing, shortly before he moved on. This is powerful, and very moving.
Facing Future is a great place to start, and this cd is a great second ... or perhaps E Ala E. But, I've nearly worn this one out. Iz was musical down to his bones, but more than that his music is healing and represents the highest nature of us.

In Israel, where Jews from all over the globe arrive seeking refuge and new lives, a young keyboardist/composer/producer/arranger named Idan Raichel sought out seventy multinational musicians and began recording with them in his basement studio. As he set about mixing Ethiopian and other African Jewish traditions with home-grown Hebraic, Yemenite, and Arab styles, Old Testament Psalms, and even Caribbean vocals and rhythms, he initially had little hope of ever seeing the sessions released commercially. But he ended up with not one but two precedent-setting, huge-selling albums, from which the present CD was deftly cherry-picked. Opening with a majestic, multi-voiced Ethiopian chant, the 12 selections here make ample use of ethnic-based traditions and instruments. But although the songs share an edifying spiritual depth, they are nonetheless modern pop in the best sense, accessible and chock-full of catchy melodies. For example, on "Be'Yom Shabbat" (On Sabbath), the vocals--one wavering and prayerfully soulful and the other more straight-ahead--are couched in a cutting-edge reggae context, complete with sampled voices and electronic flourishes. Despite his commitment to eclectic sources and unusual juxtapositions, Raichel obviously has a happy way with a hook and no scruples whatsoever about having fun with it. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
The Idan Raichel Project is the brainchild of Israeli keyboardist, composer, producer, and arranger Idan Raichel, who invited over 70 different musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds to participate in the recordings. In particular, Raichel has long been fascinated by the music of Israel's growing population of Ethiopian Jews, and many songs feature members of Israel's Ethiopian community. The recordings also include Arab musicians, traditional Yemenite vocalists, a toaster and percussionist from Suriname and a South African singer, among others. The Project released its first album in Israel in 2002 and quickly became one of the biggest success stories in the history of Israeli popular music. The haunting Ethiopian chorus of the first single, "Bo'ee" (Come With Me), sounded completely unlike anything most Israeli's had heard before. The groundswell of interest propelled the album to heights rarely seen in the local music scene and firmly established Idan Raichel as a new type of Israeli pop star. Now a musical icon in the Israeli community worldwide, The Idan Raichel Project has performed to sell-out crowds in prestigious venues in Paris, Brussels, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and beyond.
The international release of The Idan Raichel Project's recordings on the new record label Cumbancha promises to introduce a wide new audience to the electrifying work of this unique musical collective. The Project offers a new vision for how Israelis, their neighbors in this volatile region, and people all over the world, can cherish their individual cultural traditions, celebrate their differences and through respectful collaboration create new and inspiring expressions. "Our ability to live in peace with one other depends on our learning to appreciate and respect each other's differences," notes Idan. "The way forward is not by trying to change your neighbor, but by accepting him and recognizing that we are all looking for the same things in life: bread, water, spirit, respect and love."
Deluxe international version is enhanced with three music videos and other special features.

The modern Rumi - simply the best in world music.......2007-03-19
Let me start by saying that I would buy anything that has Idan's name on it - simply because it has his name on it.
I don't remember when I was so moved by music as I am each time I listen to his music. If you can get the translation to the songs, by all means, go ahead. The lyrics are amazing. I was lucky enough to see them in concert in Los Angeles. It sounds silly but there was so much talent and love projected from the stage - really a different experience.

Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik MackiCustomer Reviews:

A Great Double Album From Theodore Bikel.......2006-04-15
"Songs of a Russian Gypsy" was re-issued as a CD by Bainbridge Records, in the 90's, but in limited numbers. When the supply dried up, only an uncertain "used" market remained, with prices quite variable. (see my review of the used CD).
This re-issue also includes another Bikel favorite, "Songs of Russia Old and New". Hopefully, more early Electra Albums will surface through the efforts of Collectors Choice Music!
