The Best of the Flamenco

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
This is a 3 CD collection of the best of Flamenco from; Carlos Montoya, de Almaden,Escudero & Ramos and Bernabé de Morón.

Carlos Montoya's fingers fly over the frets with ease and power, pulling simply amazing music from the strings. Nephew of the famous flamenco guitarist, Ramon Montoya, Carlos took great pains to learn the history of the music which was born out of the Moorish invasion of Spain. But Carlos was also to attach his own style to the form, inventing new ways of playing far removed from the classical notions, with rapid fire hammer-ons and pull-offs, popping percussive sounds from strings; forging flamenco guitar into a solo instrument able to stand alone with fire and fury. The innovations created by Carlos, and embodied within the performances on this release, gave rise to the powerful playing of nuevo flamenco now dominating the world music scene. The energy, musicianship, and grace belie a genius of the guitar and the fact that there were no retakes on any of the cuts makes the music all the more amazing.

Fiery flamenco from Triana, the gypsy quarter of Seville (which is regarded as the birthplace of Flamenco). Nino De Almaden and Carlos Ramos sing passionately about love and temptation - even unrequited love so tragic it can only be rendered in a lament. Mario Escudero's exquisite solo flamenco guitar work brilliantly illuminates the drama of the songs. A must-have for all guitarists.

After studying with the great guitarists of Moron de la Frontera (both Nino Ricardo and Ramon Montoya were his tutors), Señor Bernarbé de Morón made his first public appearance at the age of 13. Before the recording of this album in the Sixties, de Morón had gained worldwide recognition as a charismatic and dynamic flamenco guitarist. This audiophile release, which includes four additional guitarists and four dancers for the correct flamenco atmosphere, showcases de Morón's power and magnificent spontaneity.

Amazon.com essential recording

Hailing from the Reyes and Baliardo Gypsy families, this ensemble from the south of France has been playing "rumba flamenca" since the late 1980s. With this 1995 compilation, the songwriting talent and virtuosity this unique group possesses were gathered together in one comprehensive CD. Notable inclusions are the anthemic hit "Bamboleo," from their debut, Gipsy Kings; the slowly emotive "Trista Pena" the Italian cover "Volaré," from Mosaïque; and assorted live cuts that wonderfully capture the wild energy these players spark onstage. In short, the Gipsy Kings are a celebratory bunch who know how to rock with a rhapsody of acoustic guitars, passionate vocals, and walls of congas, timbales, cabasas, and bongos. Check this caravan out. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-07-26

I remember their hit "Bamboleo" back in the 80's...and decided to get this CD, thinking that that was the only song I would like. I was never a fan of the Gipsy Kings, but I am one now!!!! I can listen to their songs over and over, "Baila Me" is such an upbeat song, you cant help but want to dance. "Viento de Arena" must be in another language other than Spanish, cant understand a word of the song, but also one of my favorite.

The mix of traditional Flamenco guitars with a modern beat, is perfection in itself.

5 out of 5 stars if you love living, you will love this.......2007-05-21

I guess to each his own, but this disc is breathtaking, soothing, emotional, fun, spicy, and many other thing all in one. My daughter loves their music as does everone I know. It is great for every age. I would rate this even more, if possible. Full of soul!!

5 out of 5 stars The best accoustic band in the world.......2007-03-17

Beautifull rythms, I like this the best because of viento del arena.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-03-16

If this is the "Best" then I definately don't want to buy anymore.

1 out of 5 stars bad mistake, it sits buried, never to be played again.......2007-02-27

I was expecting something along the lines of Strunz and Farah, after hearing only one tune on the radio. What a disappointment! There is that one song, it is clearly different from the rest of the tracks. And thankfully, it contains no Kings vocals, which are as grating on the ears as pigs in heat! Of course, there are some reveiwers, as reflected by all the stars following this album around, who relish this stuff.
If you are new to these guys, beware! Taste the sauce first on someone else's dime before you buy.

There's very little doubt that the Gipsy Kings are good at what they do--they've become the brand name in Sevillana, the pop-oriented flamenco style. Since 1989, when the single "Bamboleo" and their Gipsy Kings album broke through and went gold in the United States, they've found a willing audience in America for their style, which, while flashy, doesn't demand a great deal of the listener, unlike more hardcore versions of flamenco. This double set collects 37 of their biggest tracks, including a version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," into one package guaranteed to satisfy fans of their precise, jubilant playing. And there's no denying they have the power to move people with their singing and fretwork, making this a must for those who want to experience all the familiar material in one sitting. Like the band themselves, the record is an unqualified success as a greatest hits package. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-08-03

This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, A R M IK or G O V I. It is the very essence of good music. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Al Dimeola, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is my second copy!.......2007-01-10

This double CD by the Gipsy Kings is one of my all-time favorites! I now have 2 copies of this CD and I introduce the Gipsy Kings to as many people as I possibly can. Everytime "Volare" plays, I feel like dancing! Just really great, infectious, "feel-good" music! You do not have to understand Spanish to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I'm dancing as I write this!!!.......2006-07-25

While I am not a music connoisseur, I can tell you that my whole family LOVES this album. From my 34 yr. old husband right down to our 1 yr. old son and all others in between. You will not be disappointed! This is our favorite album of the summer and we try hard to be flamenco dancers while singing along and cleaning the house-it's quite a show, I assure you...

5 out of 5 stars Rumba Flamenca I love!.......2006-04-04

I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2006-03-13

I had been meaning to buy music by the Gypsy Kings for some time - having always heard mention of them. I am really glad I finally did! The collection is a great introduction to their wonderful music. It is fun and energetic - beautiful songs in spanish!

This compilation project's official title is already long enough, but for true accuracy it should read, The Best of Ottmar Liebert's First Two Recordings, Volume 1. Barcelona Nights strings together the more upbeat and animated selections from his two earliest recordings, Nouveau Flamenco (his famed debut) and Borrasca (plus one track, "Festival," from Poets and Angels). The package serves as the first installment in a two-disc series; the subsequent Surrender to Love will patch together romantically inclined selections of those early 1990s recordings. It's the same music, but with different sequencing and different packaging. As such, it offers graceful and pleasant listening, though the similarity in tempos gives the disc a slightly homogenous feel. Many like-minded guitarists have traveled the path that Liebert originally blazed, and Barcelona Nights offers an appealing reminder of the qualities that elicited such a huge initial reception: nimble, articulate fingerwork; charming, uncomplicated melodies; and just enough flamenco authenticity to convince maturing pop listeners that they had discovered something exotic. Highlights include the beckoning cheer of the well-known title track, and the earnest, uplifting energy of another early hit, "Heart Still/Beating." --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Great High Octave Guitar Jazz.......2006-08-24

I have been a fan of Ottmar for a long time. This album is very good. Every tune is great to listen to. A great sound for all guitar music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars If you are looking for new sounds come and get it!.......2006-06-12

Among the most creative and imaginative musicians in the last generations, Liebert must be included in the most representative lists. His creativeness and above all his powerful vision in what it concerns to the necessary oxygen the Flamenco needed, was intuited by him and so dedicated all his energies in search of its renovation, achieving a remarkable success.

To my mind the most interesting tracks of this valuable album are: Heart still beating, Barcelona nights, Santa Fe, Isla del sol, Bullfighter's dream and La Rosa Negra, but there is not any minor track.

If you really are searching for new inspiration motives and creative sounds, this album is a must for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice music, Ottmar is very talented!.......2004-02-09

I don't understand why people so closed mind, this is new millenium, think out of the box, there is no right or wrong about music, there's only about good or bad, who really care about so called "real" Flamenco, as long as easy listening, and creative, I think Liebert is very talented. I like "Barcelona Nights" very much, I play it in my car, at home, never tired of listening. Keep up your good work, Liebert, play more new song!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2004-02-01

Disappointing all the way. You can call Mr. Leibert a sort of `Yanni' of the guitar. Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars Cross-pollination angers Nationalists.......2003-09-30

Oh please, all these people who are so worried about this genre blending with their sacred "Flamenco." Some of the best Flamenco-inspired music is stuff like this and the work of Steve Stevens, artists who think outside the box. Music is flexible and evolving; what you call it or label it doesn't matter. Nobody seems to mind that Ricky Martin or Enrique Igelsias represent "Spanish" or "Latin" pop music. To me, Alberto Iglesias would be the real deal!

In my estimation, Flamenco has always been an art form influenced by many different forces and subject to change and evolution. Why is there such a nationalistic pride among many of its fans that ends up precluding such visionaries as Liebert, who have devoted their lives to making wonderful music, from taking part? Is it because he is not 100% Spanish?

The same exclusionary mentality that wants to limit Flamenco works well in Bible music in the South. The irony is that a Latin talent is often more welcome in other genres than a Gringo's is to Flamenco. The entire genre of Flamenco suffers much more from exclusionary thinking than it does from cross-pollination. How sad that such a beautiful art form is tainted by control freaks. Those of you who bash the likes of Liebert bash one who is intensely accomplished and pays such homage and utmost respect (not to mention commercial attention and longevity) to the art form. Very sad, indeed. You should be bashing Ricky and Enrique first!

Those of you who are so close-minded (You're probably ignoring me because of my Gringo status, anyway) should check out a really cool blue grass band I know. You'll be made to feel much more welcome than Liebert has in the wild world of Flamenco "purists."

This album is a wonderful collection of soulful, technically masterful sounds from a true visionary who pays the highest tribute to Spanish guitar by infusing it with fresh blood and vouchsafing its wonders to the masses. And it's better quality Flamenco than lots of other stuff on the market! Oh, sweet blasphemy! This is no dilettante - this man lives and breathes his music.

Other genres should only be so lucky!

Album Description

With his latest release, "Best of Esteban", from one of the world's most prolific composers and guitarists of our time, Esteban has not merely created a retrospective. Instead of a simple cut and paste collection, he returns to the studio to reinvent a handful of his concert favorites. The result is a fiery, blues/rock/flamenco melding of the songs that have made him a beloved icon in classical and modern guitar playing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-14

This is a very lively CD, I like all the songs on this CD. You will play this over and over. Looking forward to Esteban's next work.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Esteban.......2007-05-10

This is one of the best guitar cd's I have heard. He has such fresh, crisp music with beautiful accompaniment playing with him.

1 out of 5 stars Hasta la vista.......2007-01-07

As an alternative, please consider buying Andres Segovia's Gymnopedies or Gnossiemes by Satie. I heard Segovia was Esteban's mentor. I'm sure the skill was transferred, but there's no accounting for taste. The 2 solo guitar pieces on the album are superb, but the others are crowded by flute, drum and violin accompaniments. Esteban's talent is undeniable, but overproduction is a killer. Sorry, sir, but Esteban, as a viola soloist, I must speak my mind! Thank you for your contribution to the collective.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar virtuoso at his best.......2006-12-01

Esteban brings something new and refreshing into the world of music. He is original, entertaining, inspirational, easy listening and has amazing skills. I wanted to start playing guitar for a long time but was putting it off constantly until I heard Esteban play. You will probably find some of your favorite songs played by Esteban, but in guitar version. Classical guitar is the best sounding instrument and Esteban demonstrates guitar's capabilities in the best way. He often plays one song in several different versions which is always refreshing (I mean Paco De Lucia today is the same Paco as 25 years ago, pretty boring from my view). I recommend this Esteban CD and all others, including videos.

1 out of 5 stars You can't be serious??!!.......2006-11-28

I cannot believe that anyone who really understands (plays) classical guitar could think this guy is anything but a fraud. He is not a good player, he misses notes (his band hides many of his mistakes), and his guitars that he sells are junk. Do you really think this guy "studied" with Segovia? Give me a break! His Johnny Cash rip-off look, and his chord fingerings should give him away to anyone who plays. Do you really think that Andres Segovia taught him to finger a first position G Major like that? Sure he did! He gives classical guitar purists/virtuosos like Parkening and Williams a bad name.

5 out of 5 stars flamenco is the best.......2007-07-07

this cd is an excellent example of modern and traditional flamenco, even though i prefer the traditional flamenco as it is authentic and the real essence of the andalucia culture, i would recommend it for the flamenco lovers

4 out of 5 stars A bit of the new and old.......2004-05-13

ARC records produces great traditional flamenco artists that never disappoints. I got this cd based on that. However, about half the tracks are "New World", "Nouveau", or new flamenco with Latin beats and such. Those tracks are still good but I'm all hardcore "Old World" flamenco. By all means this compilation cd provides the listener with both old and modern flamenco songs that are quite interesting. Great value for the buck and I'm sure the intention of ARC records was to expose Flamenco music at an intro price.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Be Happy.......2001-02-12

You will be happy you chose this cd. Its upbeat and passionate. The music gets you off your seat flamenco dancing, even if you don't know how it doesn't matter. I discovered it while purchasing a couple much more expensive flamenco recordings. This was so inexpensive I figured it was worth the risk. And, this is the one album I listen to again and again. It makes everyone happy with the compilation of beautiful dance rhythms and some vocals. Highly recommended as a sampler of flamenco music.

Having witnessed the rise of Tango Nuevo, the refurbishing of Argentina's best-known native music by bandoneon maestro Astor Piazzolla, listeners might muse a bit that "New Flamenco" is an odd renovation to the Spanish guitar music's storied traditions. Odd or not, the music is certainly popular. Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco shares the floor with other compilations of contemporary artists working in the tradition, specifically Narada's Viva Flamenco! and its roster of guitarists playing along with keyboards, drums, and other textures. So the "New Flamenco" isn't a burnishing or rootsy exploration in the vein of Piazzolla. Instead, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz & Farah, Oscar Lopez, Luis Villegas, and eight more artists examine on Guitar Greats how Flamenco shakes the hand of pan-Ethnic music, New Age ambience, and--of course--virtuoso guitar playing. Some of the best moments here belong not to Liebert or Strunz & Farah, though. Dan Young & Lawson Rollins sound dizzying and rhythmically potent on "Scorpion," as does Luis Villegas on "Spider Hugs," with its irresistibly parading rhythmic intensity. Guitar Greats will likely sound old hat to many of the music's enthusiasts, but it'll easily win Flamenco converts. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Invigorating!.......2004-05-08

This CD is absolutely fantastic!!! I have been listening to this almost everyday since I bought this a few months back. Its really great, especially after a long day at work - a fabulous way to unwind..it totally transforms your mood. Its soothing and at the same time invigorating, very rarely can something be both.

Also goes well with a glass of wine, with a book, for a nice evening with your partner, almost anything!! Even my 10 month old daughter just loves it!

And, oh yes, the guitar work is stupendous, out of the world - if you are a guitar aficionado, you GOT TO HAVE THIS.

Worth its weight in gold.

5 out of 5 stars Pure flamenco or not... enjoy it ! Dance in your car!.......2003-12-17

*Guitar Greats, The Best of New Flamenco* at first sight might look like one of those `Various Artists' loss leader compilations you see on Info-mercials or UHF stations at two in the morning. Or you might mistake it for the traditional, Segovia version of flamenco.

But NOoooooooooo! This disc is really quite good! It is a fine collection of energetic, up-tempo, well-rendered and well-sequenced songs in the 'nuevo flamenco' style. Contributions from Govi, Young & Rollins, Strunz & Farah, Ottmar Liebert, Nova Menco, Oscar Lopez, and other artists make it first rate.

I'll guarantee it. Most of these tunes will cause you to dance in your car or your office chair, or just plain get up and dance.

My spouse brought it home after hearing it playing in Borders. We soon discovered this is great car-driving music, especially with the sunroof and windows open, hair flowing in the wind.

I recommend you purchase this CD and put it in your player. It will make your house dusting a little more exciting and go a lot faster. Or you can always put on your best peasant girl outfit, clench a rose between your teeth and let the music carry you away...

1 out of 5 stars A Lesson.......2003-02-02

Flamenco solo guitar has always been innovative ever since Ramon Montoya (the father of flamenco solo guitar) started to include classical guitar techniques in the beginning of the 1900's.

Then came Sabicas and Niño Ricardo who by todays standard are considered 'traditional' or 'classic'.

Then in the 70's came Serranito, Paco de Lucia and Manolo Sanlúcar that started to mix influences from other musical styles into flamenco and are the founders to what is modern flamenco solo guitar today.

Countless young guitarists have been influenced by these three guitarists; Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Núñez, Juan Manuel Cañizares.

Just listen to any of the above mentioned guitarists before being duped into buying this poor excuse of a record.

5 out of 5 stars Hot funk cool punk even if it's old junk . . ........2003-01-03

it's still Rock & Roll to me, music fan. Who cares what Liebert, Cook, Lopez, Armik et al. call their music? Flamenco guitar music is no longer to be viewed as a narrow, strict artform with no room for innovation and growth. The influence is there, whether or not these new artists learned from old school flamenco guitar masters from Spain or not. You think rock & roll purists cried foul when punk, heavy metal and then alternative transformed the classic rock & roll landscape of the 50's and 60's? As for country, it sounds nothing like it was 20 or 30 years ago and yet it's still called country. And I'm not even mentioning the growing new sub-genre called alt-country. Like the improvisational jazz purists who cried and moaned about smooth jazz destroying their high-and-mighty artform, flamenco purists need to find something better to do with their time.

It's been more than a decade since Ottmar Liebert came on the national music scene with his debut album, Nouveau Flamenco. The German-born guitarist brought a hybrid approach to this passionate Spanish guitar style that made it more atmospheric and brought him one of the largest audiences for an instrumentalist. Each succeeding album has been a deeper exploration of this approach, expanding it into orchestral and ambient terrain. You can hear the guitarist stretching beyond convention on tracks like "Waiting 4 Stars 2 Fall," creating a more cinematic expanse with synthesizer pads and conga drums or doubling up guitars on "Shepherd's Nite Watch." Surrender 2 Love is yet another culling of music from his early years with the Higher Octave label, and like most second "Best of" collections, it is, indeed, second-best. After all, he only recorded three albums for the label in the first place. But Surrender 2 Love is far from being Liebert's dregs, and even on a second pass, he stands six strings above most nouveau flamenco pretenders. --John Diliberto

Ottmar leibert has a gift with those hands and the guitar he plays. This is album 2 and it has the same majic as his volume 1.
Get it and enjoy the great music he created.

What a wonderful and diverse CD. Sit in front of a fire on a rainy day with a nice glass of Oregon Pinot Noir in your hand. Close your eyes relax and let the sounds of Liebert surround you. His talent is evident in the expressions as he's playing. The guitar seems an extension of his own form, not a separate instrument.

5 out of 5 stars "a man, guitarist & a love of music".......2001-10-25

When you think of all the guitarist...past & present...this name should be in the top five ~ Ottmar Liebert...think six strings, tender touch and a style that has captured the world.

Liebert takes the moment, time seems to stand still with each track on this album...it's difficult to select one over the other, because they are not the same in substance, counter-balance or texture...his ability to take a melody, weave a fine tapestry...is what sets him above the rest.

Considering the price, the volume (two hours' worth of music; 28 tracks from 17 acts), the variety (contemporary flamenco; ruminating folk; blues-influenced fingerpicking; smoothly sagacious jazz), and the sustained quality of the tunes, this package is a terrific find for fans of melodic contemporary acoustic guitar. Subtitled "The Best of Two Decades," Narada Guitar 2 is more accurately a showcase for the label's newer acts--20 of the 28 tracks were recorded between 1998 and 2000. Still, highlights abound: the dexterity and imagination displayed by adventurous fingerpicker Don Ross; the subtle tension of "Ray's Passage" from Randy Roos; the growling, whimsical charm of "The Lawnmower Song" by Eric Tingstad; the enticing flamenco filigree of Jesse Cook; the Celtic-tinged promenade of "Candleman" by Billy McLaughlin; and so on. A few flaws do surface. For instance, the fascinating spell cast by the first four tracks on Disc 2 is shattered by an inappropriate samba, a lightweight cream-puff, from Willie & Lobo. Yet the overriding quality of this cherry-picked sampler more than compensates. A fine value. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Acoustic Guitar Fans.......2002-02-14

If you're a fan of great acoustic guitar, this is a CD for you. Turn it up and listen to fabulous performances and fretwork, especially if you are a guitar player. It's also great to have as background music at a dinner party. I've had so many friends ask; "Who is that playing guitar?" It truely is a "best of" CD. One to keep at the front of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classical and Latin Guitar At Its Best.......2001-04-04

This album is a real bargain. You get two discs for the price of one, and they're both chock-full of acoustic guitar goodness. Many of the tunes have distinctly latin overtones, but there are also a number of modern guitar peices, such as Randy Roos' "Ray's Passage", an excellent example of upbeat yet tastefully restrained "liquid guitar art."

My love affair with modern acoustic guitar instrumentalists goes back to John Themis' "Atmospheric Conditions", and the songs on this album more than live up to that legacy. (Several are, in fact, contemporary with that album). I give it my highest recommendation for any fan of instrumental guitar work. Be warned, though; it'll make you want to buy several more albums, as it is a sampler. =o)

For the past 20 years, highly accomplished guitarists Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah have pioneered the style of guitarra Latina, blending various Latin, Afro-Latin, jazz, and flamenco styles into an intoxicating brew that they have occasionally peppered with Middle Eastern influences. From their fiery 1980 debut, Mosaico, to the Grammy-nominated world beat of 1992's Américas to their more subdued recent effort, Wild Muse, the critically acclaimed pair and their four-piece backing band have inspired numerous neo-Latin and neo-flamenco guitar twosomes in the States. But their imitators lack the spark that makes Strunz & Farah's music so visceral. The evidence is here in the slow, sensual mood piece "El Jaguar" (with its exotic pre-Columbian winds), the mystical "Rainmaker" (featuring an intense, traditional Tarahumara chant from Mexico, courtesy of wind player-percussionist Luis Peréz), and the lively Mediterranean vibe of "Zagros" (featuring bouzouki player Danny Papakalos). As always, what remains impressive about Strunz & Farah is their ability not only to conquer their guitars with some dazzling fingerworks but also to contrast that velocity with some tastefully low-key compositions. It proves that they are more than just acoustic speed demons. The duo picked the best songs from their most popular albums, excluding the often hard-to-find Guitarras, Frontera, and Misterio, solid releases in their own right. True aficionados will argue about what is the best of Strunz & Farah, given that a two-CD set could easily have been compiled from their rich catalog, but long-time fans and newcomers to their world will be captivated by the music on this collection. As a bonus, the album opens with "Levantina," a preview of what the next Strunz & Farah album will sound like. --Bryan Reesman

4 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Value.......2003-03-22

I must confess to a weakness for "best of" compilations. While hardcore fans of an artist or group may debate whether the selections do in fact represent the very best material, you generally get a lot of bang for the buck. And if you're already a big fan, you probably already own or have heard most of the group's recordings, so why would you want a "best of" CD? Generally, the concept is most appealing to a new listener, or someone who knows they aren't likely to run out and buy all the albums.

In this case we get sixty-seven minutes of very pleasant flamenco/latin/world beat/etc. acoustic guitar virtuosity. The professional reviewer has accurately described Strunz and Farah's style and talent. I would go further and say this CD captures the essence of their concept: Easy listening and soothing, but with enough touches of speed and dazzle to keep it exciting. I don't see how a fan of the guitar could not like it.

Now, I only wish somebody would release the music of Caldera, Jorge Strunz's latin/funk/fusion group of the 1970s, on CD. Since this isn't likely to happen, I strongly urge you to seek out vinyl copies of that group's work, particularly the eponymous debut album. Really great stuff. I think you'll be impressed by what a hot electric guitarist Jorge was in those days.

5 out of 5 stars S&F Always the Best.......2001-07-21

I realize some people argue that the selections on this disc are not that good, if you really listen to these guys, you'll realize every song they have done is the best. Whenever I want to feel relaxed, I just put any of their CD's on and go with it. If I was a doctor, I'd perscribe a heavey dose of S&F. What a cure.

5 out of 5 stars Aaaaaaah!!!!!.......2001-01-25

Cultured with a touch of class. All their albums leave you relaxed and create a journey in your mind. You just want to relax in a big chair or lay with your mate, kick back and hear the strumming and the unique voice especially in "the Rainmaker"...To those of Us, not just listening to pop tunes or classic rock, you must obtain this one for social parties or events...they'll be coming up to you to ask,"Who's That Singing?"...Classy.

3 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits?.......2000-05-26

How can their greatest hits collection NOT include "Americas" and "Heat of the Sun"? Purchase "Live" instead for their greatest hits.

2 out of 5 stars Quite frankly, a disappointment........2000-05-05

I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of this greatest hits collection. Strunz and Farah have far proved themselves above anyone else in the world music guitar catagory. But this collection of so called greatest hits is a major disappointment to their fans and to their music. First of all, the "special" bonus track, that is supposed to justify the purchase of this supposedly thought-out greatest hits, called "Levantina" (anybody want to explain that one?) is in actuality a left-over from a previous session, most likely the "Wild Muse" sessions. Aside from that, there are many other compositions that could have been included here which are inexplicably ommitted such as "Candela", "Zumba", or "Quetzal." For some reason, this great guitar duo have avoided including song selections from their earliest works. The only exception is "Nomad." Nevertheless, this regurgitation (I sincerely hate to brand it a best of) of works is a great introduction to Strunz and Farah for the virgin listener. But, I suggest you buy a copy of either "Primal Magic" or "Americas." Not only do you get the songs included here, but also the ones that have been needlessly neglected.
