Album Description

Emotional, ethereal, and evocative, "Immortal Memory" is a timeless album of extraordinary transcendence. Gerrard, formerly of Dead Can Dance, won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for the "Gladiator" score. She's also scored or contributed to "Heat", "Whalerider", "Ali", "The Insider", "Mission Impossible 2", "Black Hawk Down", and more. Patrick Cassidy is widely recognized as Ireland's most important classical composer and has released three acclaimed albums. He also wrote music for "Broken Harvest", the aria for the opera scene in "Hannibal", and he was specially commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Irish Famine with his work, "Famine Remembrance", premiered at St. Patrick's Cathedral, NY and narrated by Angelica Huston.

Album Description

2004 album from the ethereal Lisa Gerrard & award winning Irish composer Patrick Cassidy who is known for his traditional and mythological orchestral music. Ten tracks. 4AD.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

2 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars FRESHMEN CLASSICS.......2004-03-25

i owned both of these albums back in the sixties and was happy to see that they are now available on one cd . i have always believed that these two albums were the freshmen's best and i would recommend them both to anyone who appreciates what real music is supposed to sound like . no cacaphony , no screaming , no vulgarities, no unintelligble lyrics , just real music with the classic four freshmen open harmony sound. outstanding ........

1 out of 5 stars Not at their best...........2001-01-10

I am very surprised to read the rave reviews on this CD. Maybe the one I purchased is just a lemon. The sound quality is poor. Also the voices are distorted. Very disappointed. Years ago I owned the LP "Voices in Love." I think it was their best, and my favorite. I especially like the song "In the Still of the Night." Guess I'll continue to look for the albumn at record shows. Have found many Freshmen albums at used record shops, but "Voices in Love" is eluding me.

5 out of 5 stars The Height of Charm and Elegance.......1999-09-15

The Freshmen are the best thing that could happen to American Popular Song. Their gorgeous arrangements considerably enhance the harmonies of those marvellous melodies without ever destroying their basic richness. This particularly applies to the Love Lost and Voices in Love albums but to me the same can be said about most of the Freshmen Capitol output. Their reissues on the CD format are thus mostly welcome!

5 out of 5 stars ...Without a doubt , the best they ever recorded!.......1999-06-06

If your a fan of wonderful harmonies and fabulous arrangements ,'ya gotta have these.

I've had them on vinyl and never thought they'd be available on c.d. The last one I got was a gift from The Freshmen's former manager back in the early '70's. Ross sent me a note and said that , at the time ,the "Voices in Love" album hadn't been available on Capitol for years. What a great surprise to find it now.

I love these c.d.'s with soft candles , a tasty wine and tasty lady.

Enjoy , Freshman fans!

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for a Finzi Fans!.......2006-09-15

This CD is a very valuable item for everyone who enjoys the orchestral works of Gerald Finzi! It is an excelent comprehension of his work! The warm method of playing the clarinet by Robert Plane and the superb support of the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Howard Griffiths makes it very pleasant to hear this CD over and over again. I used this CD several times in a classical radio program that I make myself (and I will use it in the future) and 'field reactions' to this music are most positive! Owners-to-be will certainly NOT be disappointed! Next to the very well known Clarinet Concerto this CD contains the less well known Five Bagatelles, each of which have there own sound, beauty and sphere! Love's Labour's Lost, inspired by Shakespeare's early comedy are very beautiful musical 'stills'. The Introit in F is a very well performed piece for solo violin and small orchestra and sounds like violins should sound: warm and melancholic.
This CD is (at my point of view) very recommendable!

5 out of 5 stars What's in the water over there??.......2006-08-30

Ask me who has the most original and unique nationalistic classical vibe on the planet, and I'll say merry old England. Here, Finzi continues the tradition of 20th century English warmth with his pleasent melodies and harmonic hot-doggery. Check out Finzi with Delius, Warlok, Vaughn Williams, Butterworth, and Perry and you'll see what I mean by the "English sound.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous introduction to Gerald Finzi.......2004-02-27

I first became familiar with the Clarinet Concerto and five Bagatelles of Finzi through the 1991 RCA recording featuring Richard Stoltzman backed by the Guildhall String Ensemble. That was a marvelous recording but when you got to the compositions of Lawrence Ashmore, that filled the disk, it seemed to go down hill. Enjoyable works but just not of the same quality.

Once again Naxos delves into the British catalog and delivers a disc of masterful recordings. Personally I think Robert Plane's clarinet matches, if not surpasses, that of Stoltzman. The tone is rich and smooth throughout where Stolztman can get a bit harsh at times. Also Howard Griffiths does a splendid job leading the Northern Sinfonia as they provide a perfect backing for Plane on the Bagatelles and Concerto. Nicely balanced with the soloist.

For the last half hour of the disc the Northern Sinfonia takes over and we are presented with some more wonderful works by Finzi, which to me are simply superior to the Ashmore works that fill the RCA disc. I guess I really can't be too hard on Ashmore as he is the composer who wrote the wonderful arrangements of the Bagatelles performed on both disks: Finzi's original works were for clarinet and piano duo.

I also have to mention The Romance for string orchestra which alone is worth the price of the disc - a prime example of British "pastoral" music. Also the Introit for violin and small orchestra was another wonderful discovery for me and soloist Lesley Hatfield provides a heart felt performance.

Definitely one of those nice surprises from Naxos that not only matches the best the major labels have to offer but may in fact be the definitive recording. Naxos continues to produce one fine recording of British works after another. Keep it up.

(By the way, on Naxos catalog # 8.555766 Howard Griffiths returns with the Northern Sinfonia on another fine recording of Finzi works: this time the Concerto for cello and orchestra and the lush Eclogue for piano and strings. Also highly recommended.)

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a CD.......2001-02-04

Thank goodness for Naxos!

For the price of a concert ticket you can risk buying a disc like this knowing if it isn't any good, you've not really lost more than an evening's listening.

And, if it is as good as this you've got a gem of a CD introducing you to a composer who you might otherwise never hear.

I won't make massive claims for Finzi: He is a Jane Austen of a composer - provincial, light, witty and entertaining. He isn't a Beethoven or a Brahms.

Having said that, there are moments of darkness, moments of depth, especially in the Clarinet Concerto (surely this recording should mean more live performances?), but the lasting impression is more of joy and, 'Englishness'.

Elgar lies behind this music, as does Vaughn Williams, Holst and Parry - and a whole host of English music teachers (all honourable!). Finzi isn't making (...) copies, he has a voice of his own, a voice with a very strong sense of place and time.

The performances are fine - Robert Plane's clarinet sings lyrically and the Northern Sinfonia under Howard Griffiths support well giving a breath of fresh air to this neglected repertoire.

(By the way - I like Jane Austen)

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully played, warmly recorded........2000-10-31

This is one of my favorite CDs. The star of the show is the wonderful clarinet concerto, expressively played by Robert Plane, but all of the other pieces bear (demand!) repeated listening. The Romance in E flat major for string orchestra is some of the loveliest eight minutes of music you could ever hope to hear.

The concerto, romance, and all of the other pieces on this CD make a great introduction to one of the lesser-known 20th century British composers. Those looking for challenging, abrasive 20th century music best look elsewhere. But even though you probably won't be challenged by Finzi, you will be entertained and moved by him -- and want to return to him again and again. His gift for melody is on full display throughout, and none of the pieces overstays its welcome.

Warm and very human music, superbly played and excellently recorded, with just enough of a sun-dappled halo around the sound to convey the right atmosphere. One of the most glorious values among the many in Naxos' ever-surprising library of bargains.

5 out of 5 stars For Water Aerobics, a Top-Ten CD.......2005-07-30

I provide music for water aerobics classes. The class members are typically retirees, and like Classical music, yet until this CD the only Classical music with a beat distinctive and steady enough for water aerobics that I'd found was on the "Hooked on Classics" series. Thus, for water aerobics, this is a find.

Also contributing to this CD's popularity for water aerobics are that: (1) many of the songs are upbeat, and (2) "new stereo" recordings (in contrast to my recordings of Sousa marches that were played by Sousa himself; he died in the 1930s.)

In Summary, were you to buy just ten CDs for water aerobics classes, this would be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest March Sampling Out There!.......2004-04-05

Knowing very little about classical music, I bought several march compilations a few years back, in hopes that I could develop at least a fanboy level of appreciation. Of the compilations I picked up, this is the one that showed me the most diverse sampling of marches. If you want to become familiar with the march genre, this collection runs away with the blue ribbon, with no contendors close behind. The other compilations I came across focused strictly on the American military marches; they were all very good, but this compilation dishes up a diverse menu, from Ludwig Von Beethoven to John Williams.

This CD has a special place in my collection since it turned me on to John Philip Sousa, who has become one of my favorite composers ever. The Sousa selections on this CD are performed by The Incredible Columbia All-Star Band. I enjoyed these tunes immensely enough to buy some Sousa compilations, and found that while the All-Star Band's take on Sousa tunes is very good, I greatly prefer the releases by The United States Marine Band. The Sousa tunes on this CD are a bit rushed for my taste, while The United States Marine Band's delivery seems more pronounced and evenly paced.

My personal favorite track is Kenneth Alford's "Colonel Bogey" performed by John Williams and The Boston Pops Orchestra. They take Alford's memorable placid march, and shape it into a powerful storm-of-an-orchestral march. Absent are the keyboards prevalent in many renditions of Colonel Bogey, but beautifully replaced with a dynamic orchestra.

It's the variety of marches, however, that steal the show, especially if you are a novice like I am, and want to find out which era of marches is your cup of tea. You get a wide range, from Hector Berlioz's Racoczy March from "Damnation of Faust," to Edwin Bagley's "National Emblem March," to Victor Herbert's "March of the Toys," all the way up to the present day with John William's "The Raider's March" from "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

I am still getting my feet wet learning about marches, and this compilation has given me a great head start. No doubt I'll cringe one day if I read this clumsy description of Sousa and Alford tunes, but for the time being, I am having great fun discovering a whole new school of music. This CD is a great starting point if you want to become familiar with marches.

Just one other comment that will only further display my amateur level of classical music appreciation, but I've just got to say it: JOHN PHILIP SOUSA ROCKS!!! There are very few pieces that sound as happy and uplifting as a Sousa march. I proudly salute Mr. Sousa!

4 out of 5 stars For the Lover of Marches.......2002-05-16

This is the best march music CD I have in my collection. It covers a range from Beethoven's "Turkish March" (track 5 and my favorite of the CD) to Sousa. The weakness of the CD comes from the Incredible Columbia All-Star Band tracks. They do a few Sousa marches and the difference between them and the Boston Pops is very noticable. But that's just a minor complaint and certainly nothing to keep you from buying and enjoying this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2006-06-12

This is a good album! One of the song is just stupid, Kep Me Coming, what the hell dose that mean? That is one of the stupidest songs I have ever heard! But the rest of the songs are really good.

5 out of 5 stars Strong, strong, 80's band.......2005-07-05

I can't understand some of the reviews calling this cd mediocre. I can only assume that they gave it one listen, realized they hadn't purchased whatever it was they were hoping to find and took out their misguided anger in text review. This IS a very strong collection of songs IF you love 80's top 40 rock. "When I'm With You" is the big hit ballad but this cd goes so much deeper. This is a rock album that happens to have a ballad...which was the case with many top 40 rock bands from the 80's. "Elisa", "Living For A Dream", and "Makin' My Way" are excellent songs in a sorta Styx meets April Wine kind of way. Those three songs alone are worth the price of admission...but this cd literally doesn't have a bad track. I like to listen to cds when I'm doing wood work in my basement and at first, this cd just sounded okay. It was after several more listenings that I fully realized what a great album this is. I feel like I've unearthed a lost treasure.

5 out of 5 stars AOR classic that few people heard..........2004-04-05

I remember listening to 94 Rock out of Syracuse,NY in the early 80's when "You Remind Me" came on the radio. I loved the sound of the song but only heard it a few times after and never caught the name of the group. I was lucky enough in the late 80's to pick up a cassette(by chance) by a Canadian group called Sheriff. I wondered if "You Remind Me" was the same song I had heard and loved so I purchased it. It was and what a great find. Classic AOR throughout this release with the killer ballad "When I'm With You" also here. I now have this classic on cd and would highly recommend it to 80's AOR fans out there. Great news: 707 Megaforce will be released on cd for the first time this year!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE if you like 80s AOR!!!!.......2002-04-02

This is one of the most delightful "lost treasures" I have ever seen - folks, this is one great record. The songs are excellent (I don't really like the last song, because the keyboardist sings it and I'm not that impressed with his voice, so...) and the production is really good.

This disc is worth far more than the price of admission just to hear Freddy Curci's singing. He is the most incredible vocalist I've ever heard, and I've pretty much heard them all (I'm a singer). His upper range is phenomenal, his tone is excellent, and I've never heard anyone else EVER come close to holding out really high notes for as long as he can. He doesn't really do it for "show," the things he does are quite musical in the context of the songs. NO ONE else that I've ever heard could've done what he did on this album (not Steve Perry, not Brad Delp, nobody), which is from 1982, no less. The standout vocal performance is "Living for a Dream," in which Curci sings several lines that range between the soprano A and C range (that's right, he hits a few notes in there that are a _whole octave_ above the "tenor high C" that you hear about so often - and he _sings_ them, he doesn't scream them).

Although the band did get some recognition later on for "When I'm With You" (and deservedly so, it's a great song), this band never really "made it" - this is the only recording that was released. I've read that interal conflicts over song writing, song choices, and, believe it or not, singing (I've read that the keyboardist wanted to sing more - he's a decent singer, but compared to Curci's incredible vocal prowess, he should just play the keys) led to the break up of the band. Freddy and Steve D. (guitar) went on to join with Steve Fossen, Roger Fisher, and Michael DeRosier of Heart to form the band Alias, which also released a killer AOR album (you may remember the song "More Than Words Can Say").

You won't be disappointed.
