Friday Night in San Francisco w/John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia & Al Di Meola, this CD does
if you like fast, incredible guitar playing, this is a must!

5 out of 5 stars amazing, blazing .......2005-03-17

Just when you think you've heard it all, something like Strunz and Farah comes along. This is pretty amazing stuff with blistering guitar solos overlaying beautiful chord work. Latin, Cuban, Middle Eastern, Brazilian flamenco all blend into a masterpiece. An absolute MUST for anyone interested in guitar.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best choices in rhythmic guitar 1997!.......2004-11-02

This duo is simply gorgeous . It has such freshness and vitality in their expressive rhythm that you engage almost immediately . . Heat of the sun is a very appropriate
example ; Chincha is a peruan piece ; and Earthquake is one of the most moving and happy songs of the album , Selva is a piece whose character comes from the jazz and reminds us to Al Di Meola ; and last we come to the crown jewel of the album : Dark Fire : an erotic piece loaded of a dark poetry and suggesting light and shadows melody and clear Spanish influence .
Bola is a frenetic piece filled with Flamenco airs while Anaconda is the longer piece and gifted of experimental character, Twilight at the Zuq is a very Spanish work very expressive and Zapateao rhythm .
Jardin is my second choice , vivid piece filled of love for life and exquisite beating .
Americas is the last piece and it is the fussion piece the only of them not instrumental . It a cross between the latin mood and Spanish rapture .

5 out of 5 stars Just the Best!!!.......2003-10-30

This is the best Strunz and Farah album yet. There is a song for every mood and taste in this album. The intensity of the exotic music played by this duo capture you heart from the very first song. For those who love perfection this could be a great source of inspiration.I can't wait to see a DVD with the songs in this album. A MOST BUY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2001-10-05

This is the most amazing live guitar album I have ever heard. If you play this album once a day, for three weeks I guarantee you will loss 25 lbs. That's right. Twenty five pounds in three weeks. The guitar work is so fast, so precise, so energized when you hear it you will be jumping around like a bull frog in heat. This album is so great I am now the CEO of my own corporation. One year ago today I was pushing mops in a basement. Now I am the largest distributor of spark plug washers in the USA and I am expanding into Peru. So act now!

Amazon.com essential recording

To appreciate the Gipsy Kings, a live concert is almost a necessity. If the prospect of being surrounded by screaming, sweaty hordes is unnerving, here's a vicarious way to experience the ambiance of a Gipsy Kings performance at no risk to life and limb. A fiery version of "Bamboleo" is among the CD's standouts, as are "Djobi Djoba," "Trista Pena," "Sin Ella" (the studio version appeared on the soundtrack to Peter Weir's Fearless), and "Allegria." The singing Reyes brothers and their guitar-picking Baliardo cousins cast all caution to the wind and audibly demolish the audience's inhibitions. It's not background listening but is guaranteed to galvanize any party. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful World of Melodic Soulful Sounds.......2005-09-07

Gypsy Kings Live is an album that speaks for the heart, body, mind and soul. It brings together many Mexican / Spanish flavors with a touch of Caribbean style all of its own. The steel drums ring out a melody like non you've every heard. The guitars and bass make your hips sway as your heart soars into the sky. This is a fantastic album you must buy.

5 out of 5 stars the best primer, a great addition to the old hand.......2003-09-22

this the album to get if you're just starting out with the gypsy kings - or a lover of their studio work. it's a great primer of their whole collection - jewels just waiting to be found. a live version of all their biggest hits to the date, it's a perfect intro of the gypsy house of love. all of it in perfectly mastered sound and pumping rhythm.

the best of the best is here: Djobi Djoba, Habla Me (moving and beautiful redition), Bem, Bem, Maria, Mauro, and their mammoth USA hit Bamboleo. it's a full panoramic view of the gypsy kings, the whole of the singing, playing, dancing family - from the 'forlorn love' to the upbeat pulsing flamingo. this is sing-along "got to dance" latin romance, straight from the real gypsies of the south of france. almost as good as seeing them live. the guitar work here is amazing and i'd be hard pressed to find such a talented group who sings with such enthusiasm and skill. nothing is contrived here. nothing feels false about their sound or playing. i know all the words and can't speak of lick of spanish. interesting enough, it's also worth is to check out their patriarch jose reyes in french and them move on to their album 'love and liberte.' be warned: gypsy king fans are pretty undying in their love for the band, and this album puts you in jeopardy of becoming one.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......1999-09-14

Happy - sad. Slow - fast. Relaxed - involved. It will bring up all kinds of feelings. It's absolutely wonderful!!! I've recently seen them Live - and this CD comes as close to the real thing as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Olé! They are amazing in concert you won't sit still........1999-06-24

This cd is so great that I have worn out 2 cassettes and 2 CD's. It's great!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant intro to the Gipsy Kings.......1999-02-27

This was the first Gipsy Kings albumm I ever bought and now stands with a collection of eight of their albums.

As the reviewer said, an appreciation of the Gipsy Kings is only really gained through a concert (my first experience about 20 years ago) but this album comes as close to that experience as most will want.

The music is alive and very catchy so listeners should be prepared for 75 minutes of constant "on the go" music. The musical and singing harmony of the group (and tempo of their performance)is really only appreciated by witnessing it in person but don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to clap or tap in time with the music and then go out and buy another of their works.

5 out of 5 stars Better than anything before.......2005-10-09

As a Spanish guy with an always latent, recently exploded taste for flamenco, I must say this CD beats both "Friday Night in San Francisco" and "The Guitar Trio", better known internationally. Long beautiful songs that mix the best of two worlds: Traditional flamenco classics and mild Latin rhythms in a sonic twist that burst in a last minute of ecstasy and leaves you in awe with a fast beating heart at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Very heavy and amazing acoustic power.......1999-04-07

This fine live recording is powerful and heavy and yet so beautiful. The rhythm and latin groove makes me kind of dizzy, eveyrytime I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Paco's "LIVE" flamenco free spirit.......2000-09-13

If you enjoy "modern" flamenco music and Spanish guitar with a "free spirit", this CD is a perfect choice for your collection. Live in America presents 8 live performances including several of Paco de Lucia's classics like Zyrab, Tio Sabas, and Niño Curro, performed with his sextet during the 1993 East Coast tour. The flamenco ambience is very moving all along the 8 tracks and the concert's final includes the humorist theme of "Buana Buana King Kong which creats a very exciting flamenco climax. The sextet adds percussion, bass, flute and saxophone to De Lucia's sound managing to move flamenco into the free spirit of jazz-fusion. The CD's repertoire develops very much like De Lucia's concerts. Paco starts playing alone very slowly with his Hermanos Conde guitar, creating the mood for the night. Further into his playing, the hand claps and "zapateo", percussion, and then "cantejon" (the flamenco's singing style) incorporates progressively as the music develops. Live in America captures the magic and inspiration of Paco's live performances and my only regret is that this CD does not included more material played by the virtuoso guitarist during this tour. Nevertheless, the themes chosen are longer and more developed than the studio versions, thus display Paco's tremendous improvisation capacity which was developed by playing with different musicians from other music styles such as Al Di Meola and John Mc Laughlin. Once again, De Lucia proves that flamenco is a life style and a manner of feeling music, dance, and that his touch and personality go beyond the traditional sound of Spanish folklore. The themes played in this CD have a greater flamenco taste than other live CDs where Paco's orientation was closer to acoustic jazz-fusion flamenco. In summary, this material represents what Paco does on stage and transmits his flamenco free-spirit to the listener.

Violinist Willie Royal and guitarist Wolfgang "Lobo" Fink, who perform as Willie & Lobo, are the kind of musicians that people describe as being good on record but great in concert. And judging by the powerful performances on Live in Concert they may be right. When you hear selections like "Fandango Nights" or "Flamenco Mexicana" stripped of the extraneous instrumentation and studio effects, you gain a new respect for Fink's supple rhythmic sense and Royal's intense but sweet fiddling. An added treat is Royal's between-song patter, where he talks of the difficulty he had learning to clap the complex flamenco rhythms and tells the tale of how Fink acquired his lupine nickname. As good as their studio albums are, Live in Concert offers a convincing argument that Willie & Lobo's true home is the stage. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Musicians, even better Landlord.......2007-07-15

Wille was the first landlord I've ever had and the most down to earth to date. I was a fan of Wille and Lobo beofore I realized who I was renting from. He shared fruit from his trees and occasionally came by to trade surfing stories. He even visited me at work and introduced me to Lobo and his son. Amazing individaul and AMAZING musician.

5 out of 5 stars Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"Gypsy flamenco duo Willie & Lobo were one of worldbeat music's most offbeat surprises in the '90s, smoothly blending the violin gyrations of Willie Royal and the playful strumming of Wolfgang 'Lobo' Fink. Some of their studio offerings were highly produced affairs, but their best work reflected their humble beginnings as a wildly inventive duo at a cantina in Mexico. The spirit of that duality comes across perfectly on this wonderful live CD, which captures the energizing live performances and the sounds of Spain, Mexico, and sometimes the Middle East. The opening track, 'El Faro,' blends their typical two approaches: gentle and rhythmic, then more aggressive as Royal builds up to a crazy percussive violin crescendo. 'Midnight Dream' is moody and mystical, showing a reflective side, while the nine-minute 'Moorish Reunion' takes the listener overseas for a dramatic story that begins with a gentle swaying groove and then finds Royal twisting his sound until it almost sounds like a screaming rock guitar breaking free from a Middle Eastern harem. 'Flamenco Mexicana' finds Lobo in the swirling guitar mode, while Royal creates emphatic flourishes between seductive melodic passages. 'Andale' is one of the more conventional jazzed-up flamenco tunes here, maybe a bit less exotic than the other tunes, but still tasty. The two also take some of the disc time to tell personal stories about some of the songs, and the intimacy will please longtime fans the most. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide"

5 out of 5 stars Best album of all-Live in Concert.......2006-02-27

I have loved Willie and Lobo for more years than many have even know of their existence. I was extremely fortunate to have heard them live in a little bar in Puerto Vallarta in 1991. Being a musician myself, I can truly appreciate this kind of talent. I went back every chance I had while in Puerto Vallarta as they truly mesmerized me. The "Live in Concert" album is the closest to the sound, feeling, and music I heard from them in 1991. Back then, they sold cassettes (not studio versions) at the bar which of course I bought. I wish I had more of them since that one was worn out long, long ago. While all of their albums are excellent, they don't truly capture and exploit (for lack of a better word) what unique, gifted, accomplished musicians they are. The studio recordings with added instrumentals as on the other albums left me wanting more of the Willie and Lobo so long ago.
For a true experience of these remarkable musicians I highly recommend "Live in Concert" and if ever given the chance to see them live. Don't miss it! You will walk away in absolute awe!I would give anything to see them come to Flagstaff again.

5 out of 5 stars Willie & Lobo in concert in Carmel Valley, CA 6/28/05.......2005-07-30

I saw them in concert last night and I had a very good seat just 10 feet from where they stood and sat and moved as they performed. I was amazed that from that distance, my ears really enjoyed their great music.
The sad fact is that you can't convince people who haven't heard Willie & Lobo that their music is just so fantastic, by just asking anyone to listen to the cd, because there is no justice. The concert convinced me to collect all 8 CDs that I know of. What a difference!!! I was so captivated by both gentlemen and their out of this world talents. Willie's moves (yep, from head to toe) were eye catching and enjoyable. He's in another world (not ours) when he plays his instrument or when he makes love to it. I could watch and listen to him tirelessly. He also has a great sense of humor. And Lobo? Quiet and cool, but just watch his hands and fingers move and you'll have to wonder, how did he do that? How could this men even remember the next note? Oh, and the sound of birds or a sort of animal sound?...Willie did it using his violin. Amazing! I had the best time. Lobo was kind enough to engage in a long conversation with us. My only regret was that I didn't bring my guitar to be signed and I didn't come home with a T-shirt. This men deserve to be "on" T-Shirts. I want one! I want a DVD concert! Hello out there! Somebody make them...and hurry!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute beauty!.......2001-04-20

I've listened to Willie and Lobo for a number of years now, and have (luckily) been afforded the opportunity to see them live before. I remember how much more attached I became to this duo when I found out (in a long lost article from Pacific Longboarder Magazine) that, like myself, both are devoted surfers and lovers of the ocean. This is particurlarly true for Wolfgang (i.e., "Lobo").

I mention that because, when hearing this music, and knowing just a little bit about these two, you can FEEL their music that much more...you realize that it's part of a bigger "picture" and that the emotions are pure and true.

Although each of their preceding studio albums are completely beautiful, this live cd offers an insight into their music that cannot be garnered from their studio releases. In concert, the musicianship of these two comes across loud and clear. It cannot be missed. It is a passion, and a zest for life that comes forth from every single note played. Just try listening to "Dance with you" (on this release) and not feeling the emotion behind, and in, it.

In addition, the sound quality of this live recording is immaculate. As one who approaches live cd's with a bit of caution and reserve, this almost sounds as if were recorded in a studio. It is only between songs, and with the wonderful dialogue of W&L to the audience, that you realize that, yes, there is an audience there.

Do not let the reviews of this live cd deter you from getting their other cd's. Each one is absolutely moving and beautiful. The music, on each release, is so pure and heart-felt. I would suggest starting with either the cd's "Siete," "Wild Heart," or "Fandango Nights." Those, especially the latter, are wonderful introductions to W&L. The first two on the list are their more recent cd's, and reflect a (slightly) more polished and developed sound.

Get this, and enjoy it. If you can, drive to a remote spot overlooking something you find particularly beautiful or scenic. Or, stay in, turn off all the lights and light some candles...open your windows a bit....and let this emotional, wonderfully uplifting album....and, not to sound corny but, spirtually moving album.....into your life.
