Juan Peña Lebrijano is a Gypsy from Lebrija, Spain. He probably falls somewhere in the "nueva flamenco" school, although his previous albums have referred to "Andalusian fusion," a mix of flamenco with its deeper origins in North Africa's Maghreb. His Arab-Andalusian orchestra delivers a rich and vital music that is at once classical North African Arabic, full of string sections and large choruses (sometimes very Western European sounding), and part stripped-down flamenco. As a singer he is one of the greats, with a voice that is both wildly aggressive and yet retains a lot of control and subtlety. The core of this music is voice and palmas (hand clapping), abetted by small percussion, violins, and piano. There is little emphasis on guitar or oud, which at first makes the music sound more like Algerian classical folk than flamenco. But the core of the music is still in Spain, and while it is like no flamenco you may have heard yet, fans of Spanish Gypsy music will not be disappointed. --Louis Gibson

From Amazon.co.uk

The pop world might be all cooing 'n' cross-eyed over this flamboyant elfin with extended tail-feathers, as if it were shaken suddenly from a slumber, but the arrival of such a character was in fact always inevitable. He's an unlikely but traceable amalgamation of random pop culture explosions from the past few years--two parts Paulo Nutini, one part Kemal from Big Brother, a dash of Daphne & Celeste, a barrel measure of Scissor Sisters, and another pinch of post-ironic dancing to Elton John at the Students' Union gone midnight. It's no secret that the UK has a weakness for pretty-boy singer songwriters either--he fits in there too, in that he's about to stick its index finger in the socket and pour it a drink.

Give it 12 months and you might be taking out a restraining order--Mika will split opinion--but his quasi-soul falsetto is unbelievable, that much is immediately obvious. There are moments nearing syrupy Feeling-esque normalcy (take "My Interpretation"), but those aside it's high camp insatiability all the way. There's a hint of Freddie Mercury's theatricality in the voice, and in "Big Girl" he's even written a modern day "Fat Bottomed Girls". "Lollipop" is Jake Shears leading the Jackson 5, "Love Today" is the missing link between the Bee Gees and Village People and "Relax, Take It Easy" is a chilled Pet Shop Boys in gold lamé. Too cheesy to be a classic, perhaps, but this is just the brand of subversive eccentricity Robbie has failed miserably to achieve over his past few albums. --James Berry

Album Description

`Historic', `sensational', `flamboyant' and `without-any-doubt original' are just some of the adjectives being thrown around by critics in praise of 22 year-old UK newcomer, Mika's eclectic debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion.

Fun, smart, musically adventurous and thematically provocative, the songs on Life In Cartoon Motion, all of them written and produced by Mika, combine euphoric rushes of melody with darker unexpected elements. They range from bright daytime melodramas to night-time tales of love, loss, abandonment, hope and happiness. Each is a splendid blend of fresh imagination and deft pop craftsmanship.

Album gems such as "Grace Kelly," "Lollipop," Billy Brown," and "Relax And Take It Easy," display Mika's innovative wordplay. `I've always respected people who make great records to their own vision,' writes the quixotic Mika. Mission accomplished!

1 out of 5 stars Is Mika really Miss Piggy?.......2007-08-07

Wow, where do I start? First off, the Scissor Sisters is one of my favorite bands, and I feel like Mika is blatantly ripping them off, but has far less skills than they do. His voice is so shrill and high-pitched it gets hard to listen to, and musically, I just can't find many interesting things about his music. But that is after hearing the Scissor Sisters. If you like Mika, be SURE to check them out!!!

After a while, I actually start thinking it's Miss Piggy singing - if you own this CD, listen to it and you'll see!!! The song where he keeps repeating "Love me, love me" I always hear "Kermie, Kermie" Sorry, this is probably rude, and I'm sure many people disagree with me, but I can't stand this CD. It makes me want to kick my stereo in. If you value your electronics and don't want to kick them in in a panic-induced rage, then don't buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Mika is amazing........2007-07-21

Mika has brought us one of the most fun CDs that I've seen in a few years. Yes, he sounds like Freddie Mercury at times, but he's got a style of his own.

If you've heard Grace Kelly, you should have a good idea of what Mika is all about. It's fun, high-pitched pop. If you're turned off by his falsetto, stay away from this album.

There are a couple not-so-good songs on this album at the end (I don't even remember their names because I skip over them), but other than that, every song will get stuck in your head for days. I highly recommend this!

4 out of 5 stars Needs some editing.......2007-07-06

I agree this is a very good album, but the end of Track 6 (Ring Ring) and less so 7, has an annoying segment with a woman speaking in broken english talking about having her heart broken and left with only one eye! It would be cute if it was quick, but it goes on for 45 seconds! There is also a bonus song following the last song "Happy Ending" There's a 1 minute gap between the last song and the bonus song. (a song cookie?) How many people pop out the CD at that point thinking it's over? It's a very haunting piece with a piano and falsetto vocal. I used a music editing program to get rid of the 45 second rambling spoken word segment and to cut out the 1 minute gap between the bonus track.

5 out of 5 stars Mika Rocks.......2007-07-03

Love listening to new talent! I saw Mika on Good Morning America and knew right away I was looking at a success story! Music that makes your heart sing!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut CD.......2007-06-28

I'm a little late to the game when it comes to being a Mika fan, but in this case, it is definitely better late than never. This CD is phenomenal! His style! His voice! The songs! I could go on and on and on and on.
"Grace Kelly" starts off the cd, and it grabs you right from the start. By the time you are grooving to "Big Girl" near the end of the cd, you'll suddenly realize you haven't had this much fun listening to a cd in a long, long time.
Give it a try. Trust me, you won't regret it.

This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance." --Jerry McCulley

I think shall we dance is well done.
it makes me feel like dancing also it gives me a lift about life.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, happy music..........2007-06-13

I watched the original Japanese version of this movie first, and enjoyed the cultural feel of it, as well as the elegant dancing. I was worried when I heard they were doing an American remake, but found it to be very enjoyable, capturing the spirit of the original while making it more playable to a western audience. The soundtrack is a major part of the movie, and this CD rendering is very fulfulling. It has most of the major songs used in the movie as both background and actual dance routines. The Pussycat Dolls' take on Dean Martin's "Sway" is particularly catchy and energetic, and makes for a great Cha-Cha (I know this; I've actually danced to it). Also, "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" by Go Tan Project is a beautiful, sensual, emotionally-charged Tango that will make you want desperately to get up and dance. This soundtrack covers songs with multiple emotions, and is great for listening to, and also, for dancing to. I highly recommend it for lovers of dance, music, or just the movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever........2007-05-01

This soundtrack cought the soul of the movie. I know, sounds cheesy, but if you've seen the movie and it made you want to get up and dance, this is the soundtrack for you! Every song captures the feelings of the movie. I listened to this non-stop for two days straight it seemed. If you loved the movie, it is a must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Great entertanment!.......2007-02-21

I missed this movie when it was released, and caught it late one night
when I was "flicking". It is perfect entertainment--clean, funny, and
thoughtful. For those who say it is "cornpone", I would agree, but that
only makes it more interesting in this age of instant gratification. Go
ahead, take a chance on it. I've shown it to every member of my family-
(and that includes all ages) and they have all loved it.

1 out of 5 stars Direct All Praise To The TRUE Author.......2007-02-04

I am only commenting on this album to make one thing clear: The Book of Love was NOT written by Peter Gabriel (a myth which is so far being perpetuated due to the ignorance of the fools praising Mr. Gabriel's performance). It was written by STEPHIN MERRITT; more specifically, it can be found on Merritt's band, The Magnetic Fields' album, 69 Love Songs, Volume 1. Why Peter Gabriel gets so much credit for turning a beautiful song into a somniferous cacophony is beyond me.

The culture-clash plot of filmmaker Gurinder Chada's surprise, soccer-girl-themed '02 hit Bend It Like Beckham couldn't offer American audiences much more than her bright, hand-picked sampler of India's pop music. But Chada's more traditional morality tale here (a limber adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice featuring Indian superstar Aishwarya Rai) shimmers with the intoxicating visual and musical splendors of a full-blown Bollywood-meets-Hollywood production. The song-score by noted Indian musical star Anu Malik is charged by propulsive folk rhythms ("Punjab Wedding Song," "Dola Dola"), yet laced with knowing Western pop conceits that range from Caribbean hip-hop ("No Life Without Wife") to the Broadway-suffused ballads "A Marriage Has Come to Town," "Take Me To Love (1&2)," and "Arrogance, Pride and Vanity." American R&B star Ashanti's sultry "My Lips Are Waiting" and "Touch My Body" complete Malik's enticing East-meets-West fusion, a delightful, dizzying primer to his country's most beloved film and music genre. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars excellent movie.......2007-06-18

love love love this movie. My daughter is from India and watches this over and over. great story and fantastic music (i bought the soundtrack also).

4 out of 5 stars great film - whole family enjoyed it.......2007-04-12

Everyone in my family is a fan of the Jane Austen novels/films and Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightly has always been our favorite. This Bride & Prejudice is great with the story line similar without slaving to the exact original plot.
The first dance scene ("Balle Balle") in the first 10 minutes of the film lets you know that this is going to be a musical with exciting dances - unexpected for a Jane Austen film. The first song suddenly made us fans of the India style music.
The second song ("Marriage Has Come to Town") seems out-of-place and hokey but upon multiple viewings, I look forward to it.
My third favorite song is "Dola Dola" which is the stick dance song.
The one criticsm I have is the sudden wrap-up of repentent Darcy's make-up tasks - saving the younger sister from Wickham and salvaging the older sister's marriage. It all happens so quickly you might miss it.
Watch for the bloopers at the end.

This is our first introduction to Ballywood films and it was a great experience. We liked it better than "I Have Found It" which is parallel to Sense & Sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Bollywood meets hollywood.......2007-03-27

this is a great cd with a mix of the bollywood style, but also the old fashioned movie musicals from the 1950s and 1960s with a contemporary flair. it's just plain fun!

5 out of 5 stars Great music........2007-03-08

A great movie with great music. I've watched the dvd and listened to the soundtrack many times. My only real complaint is that not all of the songs in the movie are on the soundtrack. For example does anyone know the Rishi Rich song played during the wedding reception at the beginning of the movie? It's the scene when Balraj and Jaya are dancing while Lalita and Chandra are talking upstairs. Also, does anyone know the song that's played at the very end by the marching band when Balraj brings his parents to meet Jaya's parents? I can't find either in the credits.
Regardless, both the dvd and soundtrack are still great!

On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also written for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up? Maybe not entirely yet, but Lohan is showing the promise of an honorable mainstream career. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars as much as i'd hate to admit it..........2007-07-20

i loved every song on this album.i don't care for lindsay in the least but i did love this album.i listened to her first c.d and this is one is way better.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing respectability.......2007-07-11

This sophmore album from Lindsay does grow on the listener, I must admit it. It's nothing spectacular, but it's very listenable and quite enjoyable. Ignore Lindsay's personal life and, to be honest, the things she tries to say about it on this album. They're not particularly credible or interestig. Focus on the music. It's a bit more of a rocky and edgy sound than the debut "Speak." Lindsay's husky voice has its own unique quality to it, can't be said that she sounds just like just a carbon copy of a whole gaggle of other young singers. The songs A Little More Personal and Who Loves You are very good, I hit the repeat button. In summary, quite respectable female pop/rock.

1 out of 5 stars Lindsay Lohan Needs To Find Another Way To Make Money..........2007-06-04

**I want to give this work of the ludicrous Lindsay Lohan a (-)100 stars, but the review format only lets me go down to 1 star...

Poor Lindsay Lohan...

She's been enabled practically all her life to produce terrible movies, music, posters, and personal actions. Unless you, the consumer, enjoy having a reverse peristaltic reaction to this horrible album, then by all means waste your money and buy it. Emergency Rooms should stock this album for use when a patient must evacuate their bowels do to poisoning.

I suggest that if you need to listen to the pathetic groans and moans of an adolescent alcoholic and drug addict, buy stuff from the Olsen Twins; that way you'll get a two-for-one deal...

Good Luck...!

3 out of 5 stars Defending Lohan and It's Okay.....I Guess.......2007-02-04

I would never review music, but I felt bad at all the people knocking her. I don't think this is a terrible CD. I do think that this may very well be Lohan singing. Her voice is decent but just flawed enough that I think it is genuinely hers. The songs aren't terrible, they are actually listenable. Her cover of the Stevie Nicks song was actually sort of good. I guess her biggest problem is that they are very forgettable. I would never buy it, but if it was given to me for free I would keep it. This is probably best for mom's that are looking for something to buy their tween's that isn't completely and uberly sexed up.

5 out of 5 stars Love this girl!.......2007-01-01

Lindsay Lohan's "A Little More Personal (RAW)" is amazing. I love the kind of 80's feel to it. Its definetly moody, and she gives her soul and heart into this album. I love to listen to this CD...it's timeless....

Lindsay Lohan leaps into her much anticipated debut CD with a blast of something that simulates warmed-over Led Zeppelin (the lyrically ferocious "First") and from there finesses it into a stylish experiment in pounding away at teen pop's predictability. Influences--not all of whom her 8-to-14-year-old fans will flip to, or even find, in their pinup mags--loom large: While the Ashlee Simpson-like rocker "Nobody 'Til You" winds into the Jessica Simpson-y "Symptoms of You," the lovelorn "Something I Never Had," taps a sweetly unself-conscious vocal vein that owes gratitude to the otherwise highly un-Lohan-like Lisa Loeb. Though Lohan might balk at the comparison--she is, after all, the "Ultimate"-spawning original teenage drama queen--fellow tween queen Hilary Duff's stamp is pressed firmly into stormy self-explorers like "Disconnected" and "Anything But Me." Where "Speak" intones loudest, though, is in its least-rocking, most beat-propelled songs: The title track dips and bounces tantalizingly, begging hands-in-the-air listeners to "c'mon and let it out"; "To Know Your Name" digitizes a sexy hip-hop inflected dance number; and "Rumors," a J. Lo-like thumper (and one in a trifecta of pouts over the pitfalls of stardom) ends this disc on a don't-stop, bound-for-diva-dom note. -Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-03-24

This album was pretty good. I'm not a fan of Lindsay Lohan, but her music is pretty upbeat. I had all the albums to another singer I love, and thought maybe I'll try Lindsay, and see what she's like. It's not bad, but it's not the best either. The songs I like are First, Speak, and Rumors.

4 out of 5 stars why does everyone not like this CD?.......2007-03-22

I got this CD in forth grade. I was sick one day, so my momma got me this CD. I was already happy because i loved (and still do!) ''Rumors.''

i recomend.

5 out of 5 stars Come on and let it out!.......2007-03-16

Lindsay Lohan has succeeded in producing a fantastic album. Though not in the finesse of stars like Jessica Simpson or Delta Goodrem, Lindsay brings her own attitude and attributes to a new and refreshing album. Lyrics are well done, and most songs are co-written by Kara DioGaurdi, who has written many songs for other musicians and film soundtracks.
There are rock tracks such as Disconnected and Rumours, to the more heartfelt tracks such as Something I Never Had and Very Last Moment in Time.
Although other reviewers have critized Lindsays work, saying its terrible, they may not realise she hasn't been dropped from her label and has even released a second album A Little More Personal. How bad can it be if she has two albums under her belt??

4 out of 5 stars Light leisure listening.......2007-02-27

Lindsay Lohan's "Speak" is not a deep, meaningful album, whatever that might be. And Lindsay should concentrate more on acting than singing. Nevertheless, "Speak" is an enjoyable pop album. It's got bouncy, catchy tunes and Lohan's voice is actually kind of interesting. "Speak" is a good album to throw on while doing stuff around the house or as background music to reading. You'll catch yourself tapping your foot. Overall, a pleasant surprise. The record has genuine merit to it and is not just something put out by a celebrity for the purpose of doing a "project" in another art form than the one they're already established in, which is the criticism from other reviewers. Solid job by Lindsay. Now if she just works at cleaning up her life.

5 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to the other reviews!!!.......2007-02-11

What can i say I LOVE this album. It's a little edgy, somewhat pop, but real good listen. It's more Lindsay Lohan in freaky friday type music than the pop music in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. If you are expecting more songs like "Rumors" than this is not the album for you. If you are into Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" album then this is a good buy. Def worth the money.

Kiss's self-titled debut manages to simultaneously represent what rock & roll in the 1970s was all about, and stand up as a classic recording without sounding dated. That's a rare trick, even for Kiss (whose efforts after, oh, 1977 didn't do much more than tread water), and one that should be appreciated even as listening to the album brings back misty-eyed visions of high school. (It doesn't matter if you were in high school in the '70s, something about this album just screams late adolescence.) Kiss is, of course, crammed full of songs that would become concert favorites (most of this album appears on Alive!) and classics--who hasn't heard "Strutter" or "Deuce"? It's a slab of pure, unadulterated rock & roll. While this isn't especially thought-provoking stuff, it's arguable that rock ever should be. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Time To Pucker Up.......2007-07-05

The self-titled debut of KISS is definitely one of the best debuts to hit the racks for any band in any genre. Opening with "Strutter," flying through to "Cold Gin" and finishing the listener off with my personal favorite, "Black Diamond," this album is a wonderful way to introduce new ears to the KISS phenomenon since almost every song on this disc is a live KISS staple. This is hard rock n' roll at its best. It's not too deep, not too intelligent, and never too quiet. It's loud, fast-paced and always one step away from losing control. That's what real rock is all about. You can tell in the way that the songs are performed that this band was having nothing but fun when they recorded this album.

I highly recommend this album to anyone who's not very familiar with KISS. It set the foundation for all that was to come, from member changes, to the "unmasking" and all the way to the reunion and farewell tours. If you're a true fan of rock music, you need to own this disc.

4 out of 5 stars The Album that Started it ALL.......2007-05-30

First of all, I'm a LONG time KISS fan and own everything there is (almost) - but this is a great record because it started it all and because of the songs that are on it. "Deuce" "Strutter" "Cold Gin" "Black Diamond" "Firheouse" - these are all KISS classics. It's always a shame to think that this album didn't do well commerically when it cam out nor did it yield any big radio hits. The only problem I have with it (if there is one) is that in my opinion, it doesn't stand the test of time sonically. The way the songs sound - sound a bit safe, and at times they seem a bit slow. That's why "Alive" stands up so well - sonically it captures what the band what about. But, this record has that cool classic feel to it, and it's very clean sounding - and the boys were playing their hearts out!

5 out of 5 stars KISS!!.......2007-04-23

Wow, this was the second KISS album I bought. The year was 1977 and I was 9. I had just bought "Love Gun" and and was hooked right away. It took me awhile to appreciate this album for I was young and more into the mainstream at the time... but eventually I was listening to more of this than "Love Gun" previously purchased. Who would have thought that this would be the starting point of a massive collection 32 years later? This band has had its ups and downs, but this is where it all started. If it wasn't for this album, nothing else about KISS would matter, nor would it have existed.

You may love KISS or you may hate KISS... But one thing's for sure and that is you have owned KISS in one shape or form...

5 out of 5 stars Ladies and gentlemen, the hottest band in the world...Kiss!!!.......2006-11-25

Wow, this is a great album. I don't even know where to begin, so, I'll just praise it a little and give some facts. This is, of course, Kiss's first album, with ten rockin' songs at a bit over a half hour. It's got the original line-up of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. It's just too bad they couldn't keep the classic line-up, 'cause Criss and Frehley were great musicians. At this point, I would also like to add an interesting fact, or maybe just an opinion: While KISS is definitely a classic rock/glam rock/hair metal band, if you think enough, they were a little more. Ace's guitar solos were pretty blues-based, kinda like Angus Young but in a pretty different style. Peter Criss's drum-playing, although it was definite hard-rock style, are still jazz-influenced (listen to the end of "Cold Gin" and you'll see.) Anyway, back to some more strong points. This album is also highly accessible, for I've seen this record in just about every music store I've been to. There isn't a single, weak track on this album, in fact, I'd probably say this would be one of my "desert island" albums. You know, one of the albums I'd bring along with me if I was stuck on a deserted island. And, to back up how much I love each song, I'll give a track-for-track review:
Strutter 100/100: From the first time I heard the opening drums, I knew I was in for something special. One of the all-time greatest Kiss songs and a true rocker. After hearing this, you know that you're in for a good time.
Nothin' To Lose 91/100: Anthemic rocker sung by Gene with a great riff. Love the sing-a-long chorus and a great hook, too.
Firehouse 90/100: Sorta similar to "Nothin' To Lose" with another great, sing-a-long chorus. The only thing I don't like about this song is the fire truck driven at the end, it gets kinda annoying.
Cold Gin 100/100: Fun and catchy with some of the greatest guitar work on the album. I love the ending drum solo Peter Criss pounds out at the end. Definitely one of Kiss's best songs.
Let Me Know 100/100: Another of my favorite songs on the album. The vocal harmony right before the explosive guitar work at about the 2-minute mark signals the raw energy and passion in this song. No matter what anybody says about this song, it's still a real rocker!
Kissin' Time 100/100: Whether it's a cover or not, it's still an awesome song with a great chorus that kind of tells how Kiss's successful career would go.
Deuce 96/100: I never really understood most of the lyrics, so I can't rate this entirely perfect...HOWEVER! This has, along with "Cold Gin" and "Let Me Know", has some of the finest guitar work on the entire album! The riff rocks and the closing solo is a mammoth of a guitar shredder!
Love Theme From KISS 92/100: A jazzy instrumental that KISS would never do again, but for what it is, it's definitely awesome, especially the drumwork Peter Criss gives us.
100,000 Years 88/100: Gene leads this song all the way with his lead vocals and basswork. I would normally never rate any KISS song lower than a 90/100, but this song is a little too repetitive for me.
Black Diamond 94/100: A dark song, especially for KISS. The acoustic opening grabs your attention, and the song has something of a Black Sabbath feel, especially the heavy and distorted, almost sludgy, closing. Nevertheless, this song has an epic feel and stands strong.

So, to summarize my review, every track is strong, some in their own way, but it's a definite essential in any KISS, classic rock, glam rock, hair/proto-hair, or '70s collection. Believe me, if you want great KISS that just rocks out loud and lets you have a great, fun time, you'll love this one. And to all KISS fans around the world, rock on!

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2006-10-18

I read somewhere that there is actually a KISS debut album that never was released. Anyway, the self titled Kiss ended up being their debut and, although, it isn't in the category of great, it isn't in the category of bad. It's actually pretty good.

The songs get a studio treatment that was prevalent in the '70's, which isn't a bad thing. It's interesting for the fan to get the studio versions of each of these early songs. The band would seriously rock these songs more live and we get those versions on Alive 1. But this 'first' album is a lot of fun.

Its exotic locale, the romantic chemistry of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman with a gripping equation of star-crossed romance and hard-boiled valor made Casablanca an Oscar-winning surpise that erased Warner Brothers studio executives' disappointment in George Raft for not signing on as Rick, the suave, mysterious proprietor of the café that serves as ground zero for this timeless 1942 classic. Max Steiner's urgent score, and the equally contentious insertion of Dooley Wilson's now indelible saloon reading of "As Time Goes By," has made the film's music an integral piece of this pop cultural puzzle, finally enjoying a formal soundtrack issue more than a half century after theatrical release. As part of Rhino's ambitious soundtrack project with Turner Entertainment, which owns the film, Casablanca is anything but tossed-off, restoring extensive portions of the original score along with evocative dialog excerpts and annotating the history of the film and its sonic counterpart. Here's looking at you, kid. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs! .......2005-08-02

This is an excellent buy! Its almost like have the world class movie without the picture. The music is excellent and moving. I brought it with me on an overseas vacation and when I closed my eyes on the plane it was like watching the movie! Well worth the purchase!

5 out of 5 stars You definitely must remember this..........2004-12-31

The dialogue, the intrigue, and now the soundtrack. If you are a fan of the movie you should own the soundtrack. The great Max Steiner score is good company on a quiet evening.

5 out of 5 stars simply fantastic.......2004-02-07

as a rabid fan of Casablanca I almost died of joy when I received the soundtrack as a Christmas gift...and then this experience was repeated the first time I played it. The soundtrack, like the film, is absolutely perfect. fans of both music and Casablanca, and indeed good film in general, will adore this.

5 out of 5 stars As Time Goes By...and other standards.......2003-09-21

Of all the soundtrack recordings I own, this is the most unusual. Yes, it features Max Steiner's score and the various vocal renditions of standards as we saw and them in Rick's Cafe Americain...including Herman Hupfeld's "As Time Goes By." And although this isn't the first soundtrack to incorporate dialog from the film, it's the only one I have ever owned in this format.

The score by composer Steiner is reminiscent of his music for a movie also set in French North Africa (Algiers), with melodies and rhythms that evoke the desert and alien cultures of the region. Interpolating the French national anthem and (reluctantly) As Time Goes By, as well as snippets of Germany's national anthem, Steiner's music sets the tone for the conflict both out in the wider world at war and in Rick Blaine's disillusioned heart.

Adding punch and poignancy to Steiner's score are recordings of "Dooley" Wilson, the Warner Bros. Orchestra, and pianist Elliot Carpenter (the real ivories-tickler behind "Sam Waters'" playing) as they performs such wonderful numbers as "Knock on Wood," "It Had To Be You," "The Very Thought of You," "Frenesi," and, of course, the incomparable "As Time Goes By." And as a bonus, Casablanca fans will be thrilled to hear many of the great lines from the movie, spoken by Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, and other cast members. Some of these exchanges will make you smile, others will make you mist up. Others will help you settle bets ("See, no one in the movie ever, ever says, 'Play it again, Sam.'").

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

Compilations of readily available music are rarely satisfying, and sometimes the more they try to have a theme the less satisfying they become. The Putumayo series certainly falls prey to this often, but this particular set has risen above the mass. Editors Hamid Zagzoule and Jacob Edgar have an understanding of North Africa, and provide intelligent liner notes on the artists and the music. Some selections were obvious: Khaled, Rachid Taha, Ali Hassan Kuban, and up-and-coming star Rasha. Others are new names for most listeners. On the pop side is Algerian Kadda Cherif Hadria, whose use of a light jazz piano mixed with more traditional sounds works well to showcase an excellent voice. Sharkiat also use jazz with a slightly harder edge to enhance their Nubian sound. The set follows through with artists that provide a pop-side look at the music of Algeria, Sudan, Morocco, and Egypt. The music here is intelligent and pleasant, but nothing really gets deep into the root. This is easy listening from the Maghreb. --Louis Gibson

2 out of 5 stars Sleeping on the caravan.......2006-06-15

This is Putumayo's first "Odyssey" album, surprisingly,it is still in print(!) It explores the acoustic side of Middle Eastern music.Unfortunately,it's quite repetitive."Ya Malaam"&"Zwit Rit" go on.And on.

Khaled,as usual,is great in "Ki Kounti." Rasha's "Leila" is not THAT bad;it's hypnotic instead of boring."Nahawand"&"Through the Veil" are North African jazz.Like some smooth jazz, this album falls into the trap of being repetitive.

"Cairo to Casablanca" ended up being an album I eventually took to a used CD store.Perhaps someone else will enjoy it.I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Mediterranean Music rules my life........2006-06-05

Another good CD. This is a blend of Middle East and North African music. If you like the Mediterranean groove buy this CD, also check out Afro Latino by Putumayo series, they are all very good. Actually these recordings were the ones who got me interested in moving to Morocco. Get yourself a seductive Mediterranean girl and dance to the beat. Buy it you will remember me.

3 out of 5 stars Good except for AWFUL "Rasha".......2006-03-17

The first seven selections on this CD are quite enjoyable and atmospheric. Makes me sort of want to get up and belly dance. Then we get to the eighth cut and it is excruciating. This is by an Algerian artist named "Rasha" who performs her composition "Leali." This is just meandering up and down the scale. All I could think of was Arnold Schoenberg Goes Arabic. It is nerve-wracking. I have managed to sit through that one twice, but I will never do so again by choice. This is so awful that it ruins the whole CD. The remaining three selections are probably not bad, but listening to Rasha just puts me in such a bad mood that it's difficult to listen to the rest of the CD. After Rasha, I'm just ready for this CD to be over. If I were technical minded enough to figure out how to program my player to skip Rasha I might like this CD. But as it stands now, I don't think I'll be listening to this one again within the next few years.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent North African anthology.......2005-03-26

Putumayo has 3 excellent Mahgreb region/North African music anthologies, "Cairo to Casablanca", "Arabic Groove," and "Sahara Lounge." Although these feature Arabic societies, the music is not really Arabic, but rather reflects the eclectic mix of people, cultures and history of North Africa (languages from French to Berber come up in these three CDs). For instance listening to El Mediouni's "Ya Maallem, I'm struck by the similarity in rhythm, harmony, and melody to music of other Mediterranean cultures (and what a beautiful trumpet solo on this piece, obviously the piston trumpet not originally a product of North Africa!). Putumayo anthologies are thoughtfully constructed, the artists are all stars from their respective countries, and the songs are ordered to listen to from start to finish (like LP records used to be). World music fans, by definition, like variety, and "Cairo to Casablanca" is different. The haunting sound of North Africa melodies (I think the distinctive sound comes from harmonic minor scales based on the 5th note of the scale instead of the root)is at once exotic and soothing. Fix yourself and some friends up with a hookah, Moroccan mint tea, a couscous-tagine dinner, add this CD and say: "ssalamu'lekum!" (Peace be with you). lla yhennik !
