Customer Reviews:
My Budgie Maude & I love this cd!.......2007-04-20
I purchased this cd for my budgie to hear & learn different bird sounds during the day while I am @ work....Maude just goes wild when I walk over to turn it on.....she will sit on top of the cd player & bob her head.
It will be cool when she starts repeating the different birds
I had no trouble with the track not lineing up but the 3 bonus tracks didnt have a name only unavailable....but Maude can't read so she dont mind
Great sound; Wrong Indexing.......2006-09-20
I give it 4 stars because it isn't too mixed up with the indexing and the most important part is the excellent sound...all for the low price! There are even 3 bonus birds at the end (but, no names!) I don't understand the person who says the indexing is not wrong. If you select a track and it isn't the bird then the indexing is wrong. Simple. Don't get it if you must have the indexing correct. And I think it is a great buy. No regrets! I'm getting more as gifts. I'll get the list straight. It will definitely help me learn the names!
great bird sounds!!.......2006-07-18
I don't understand when people say the tracks don't line up, because they do. There are three bonus tracks at the end of the cd which are not listed on the back cover. I don't know what birds these are, but the rest of the cover lines up, except it says (1)zero tone (2)summer tanager and (2) is one, because 1 is considered two also. The bird sounds themselves are amazing and clear and if you like bird sounds this is for you.
Bird Sounds.......2006-02-20
This is the most authentic CD of various bird sounds that I have ever heard. My two paraketts listen very intently to the sounds and then go on and make their own chirps too.
Titles don't match tracks.......2005-02-14
Apparently 3 more tracks were inserted without updating the track index. I realized this when I played the whip-por-will track and heard a hermit thrush instead. Don't use this CD for field identification unless you can figure out what the 3 extra tracks are and where they were inserted so you can rewrite the track listing accordingly. Otherwise, the recordings are crisp and clear.

Replacement.......2002-04-03
Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.
What became of Ellie May? Did she enter a convent?.......2001-01-25
Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.
This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").
Then, there are my favorites:
"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?
"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.
Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!
The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.
Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)
My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.
The Absolute best!.......2000-10-25
A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!
Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29
I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.
To Understand Western America Listen Up!.......2000-03-20
This album has it all. Bring it on a road trip!

Bach and Handel Treats.......2000-08-04
The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may be an abstraction we are not here priviledged to comment on.
I have marveled for years, even when these were two separate LP's, of the power and dimensionality conveyed by the way these works are performed. I still switch from one to another piece as which is my favorite. In this respect, the experience is a hermenutic delight. Any lover or respecter of Bach or Handel would not go wrong by including this collection in their musical library.
When I use the word "treats" in the title, I mean just that: it is a collection of works that one would be hard pressed to find performed together on any available recording. And so I use the metaphor "treat," as if I were given a morsel and then devoured it; and another, and devoured that one, each with a fullness of pleasure and delight, and with soul filling satisfaction.
These indivdual recordings are for the most part masterpieces in and of themselves, and to be able to listen to them as they are performed flawlessly, and in a manner that invites the Spirit of GodÑby saying they are a "treat"Ñis to merely to treat them minimally.
Fine recording, but doesn't work for me........1999-05-07
I love several of J.S. Bach's cantatas, and enjoy hearing them in a variety of ways--period performances, orchestral arrangements, etc. Therefore I'm not one to insist on authenticity. Nevertheless, the chorus here sounds too big for the Bach. Also, the program needs more variety for straight through listening. Chorus after (massive) chorus doesn't work for me.

Country Hits and Misses.......2007-05-30
I ordered this CD for the Floyd Tillman tracks, which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The rest of the mix is spotty at best, with some tracks bordering on mere filler.
HOT!!.......2003-01-09
As fine a compilation of serious pre-nashville glitz honky tonk as you'll find. REally a great disc.
Classic soundtrack to an idealized 50s honky-tonk.......2000-04-04
I've had this disc for a few weeks now, and I finally figured out what it sounds like: a jukebox at some idealized 50's honky tonk. Columbia has gone back to the vaults to pull out a wealth of country honky tonk material, *27* tracks, clocking in at an incredible *73+* minutes! The recordings range from the mid 40's through the early 60's. The sound is really quite impressive throughout.
Artists include Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys on a mid-40's blues, Floyd Tillman, "Little" Jimmy Dickens, Lefty Frizell, Marty Robbins, Carl Smith, Johnny Horton (forever wiping out the sound of "North to Alaska" and "The Battle of New Orleans" by ripping it up in an almost rockabilly style on "Honky Tonk Man"), Ray Price (with great versions of "Heartaches by the Numbers", and "Crazy Arms"), and more.
Lots of fiddle and peddle steel round out the package. A great buy.
Half is ok, half is fantastic.......1999-10-01
The first half is weak, but the second half (starting with "Hey Joe") makes up for it. It's a chronological presentation. A good sampler. Every song from then on is FANTASTIC!
Start here without hesitation........1999-04-17
These artists had all the technology they needed. Just listen to this stuff! Ones who can deliver a honky tonk song like this are not in such desperate need of digital assistance! A good intro to real country songs by real country singers and musicians.

halloween sounds.......2007-01-08
Great CD sounds for creating a scarry Hollween. I put in my boombox and placed it on my front porch to play Hollween night. It could be heard over the whole neighborhood. The kids Loved it!
A scary soundtrack.......2006-09-20
This is a compilation of what we can call "normal sounds" but they can scare the hell out of you if you are alone, the place is dark or it's late in the evening. I found that there are some sounds that can be considered out of place here. Phone sounds or machine guns are not "typical" of Halloween. But we have also the classic ones: gongs, chains, creaking doors, laughters, wolves, screams... The footsteps are very realistic. You can hear it almost from beginning to end without noticing. There are no pauses between tracks, and it's good also if you are planning on make your own compilation. Highly recommended!
Film soundtrack waiting to happen.......2005-10-05
It's so unfortunate: there are some cool sounds featured here. How great would it be to see a film, a visual compendium to match? Unfortunately, that film hasn't been made. Horror film needs to embrace minimalism, atmosphere, and mood. All we've had for years is sledgehammer to the face, over the top, metal soundtracked, FX OD fests. Close your eyes, walk through darkness, and try to evoke something resembling a chill or two with this.

I Love It!.......2007-02-14
I bought this CD shortly after having fallen in love with An East Tennessee Christmas and was absolutely delighted by what I heard. If you have a good sound system at home or in your car, put this CD on and sit back and enjoy. A great selection of songs beautifully played in a top-notch recording. I don't know which song is my favorite...but I'm wearing this CD out trying to decide.
A Master Guitarist in His Maturity.......2006-07-01
I'm working through my first listen of this recording. I just brought it home from the store and am enjoying a trip far back in my own history. I first picked up the guitar when I was 15 years old and that's about 38 years ago. Before much time passed, I was taking lessons from a man who played "Chet Atkins' Style," a technique of using a thumbpick and fingers that is a variation of the classical style. But the technique was not applied to the classical literature; it was applied to country and popular music.
I was enthralled. I learned a number of arrangements using Atkins' style and still remember a few of them. Not only was Atkins a master guitarist, he was a master arranger as well.
This album showcases Atkins during his mature years. His collaboration with a number of fine musicians pleases me. The songs are well selected and the addition of other musicians is a treat. If you are a fan of Atkins, especially his later material, then you'll like this recording.
Chet Atkins was a master musician and an excellent arranger. He also had a knack for picking compatible musicians to play with. This recording exemplifies both characteristics.
Later Chet Atkins great material.......2006-02-07
As the liner notes to this second "Essential" volume indicates, Chet Atkins had wanted to explore jazz and other idioms when with RCA, and the label, despite Chet's stature and the fact that he was the executive producer for the label, flatly refused to allow him to do so. They cited, maybe correctly so, that such excursions would go over the heads of the general country audience.
Chet knew he could vastly broaden his audience rather than limit his exposure, so he split RCA for Columbia and continued to grow and solidify his already legendary status.
"Essentials" - The Columbia Years" is a must have for Atkins fans particulary fond of his jazz work and more modern tunes. It opens with a JS Bach tune "Bourree", that starts out in the baroque style of the original, picks up a beat and swings into bebop territory before coming back to square one, and that's just the opening cut.
Numbers with Tommy Emmanuel, George Benson, Jerry Reed, Mark Knopfler and Suzy Bogguss pepper this CD but every guest takes the obligatory backseat to the unquestioned master. Atkins delivers a tender reading of Lennon's "Imagine" and closes with "So Soft, Your Goodbye", from the Atkins- Knopler CD "Neck and Neck."
All in all, the title of this collection says it all. For an even more straight up jazz CD, check out Chet's "CGP" album.
The Master at his very best.......2005-12-01
I am quite surprised I am the first to review this album.
Chet in the last 10 years of his life recorded several albums.
He recorded songs with Mark Knopfler, Jerry Reed and a few others. Chet Atkins has taken the guitar to a new level, and we are lucky enough to hear the master play the guitar as only he can play it.
This CD represents to latter part of his life and his more recent recordings..
Chet has always been considered the greatest guitar player on the planet. Chet can play all genres of music and play with the best of them.
Chet will always be remember as a master guitarist.
Some of the finest recordings of his career are on this CD.
Bouree starts the CD out and shows his classical side. Bouree starts the way Bach recorded it and goes to a country style, and then back to Bach, truely a masterpiece.
Dream is another highlight on the CD, and well worth the listen.
I'll see you in my dreams is another song on this CD that gets my attention time and time again.
He pulls out old songs like Waltzing Matilda and gives them a new life.
The only problem with this CD is the absence of my personal favorite, I Still Cant Say Goodbye.
The first time I heard the song I was in tears.
Chet Atkins was a class act and his songs are classics.
Rest in Peace Chet and thanks for the memories

A must buy.......2000-06-27
This CD is worth it's weight in gold. The mix is outstanding. One of the few CD's that you'll enjoy playing straight through time and time again. The songs take us back to a more simple time. Some of the best songs ever written are here. Simple, infectious melodies that will never go out of style. This CD is worth twice it's price. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:
Patti Page's Greatest hits on Columbia records.......2006-09-07
First, do NOT be fooled by those reviews that are less than favorable. I LOVE this album!
I orginally purchused it in the 70's on LP and later on CD. And now I'm getting ready to buy it on cassette!
I believe it is FAR superior to the old Mercury recordings. If they want want the old, tinny recordings from Mercury, then they should go out and purchase her Patti Page's Golden Hits on the Mercury label!!
Even though Patti's voice may not be as strong, she does a GREAT job!! Also, it sure is nice to hear those LUSH orchestrations!
good Patti, bad arrangements.......2005-11-25
Quite a letdown after looking forward to receiving this CD for weeks (not the best job of shipping Amazon has ever done for me). Patti Page's voice sounded great, but the arrangements were nothing like the ones I listened to growing up.
Quality of sound.......2005-09-13
Lovely music, great artist, but the CD sounds very "tinny." Should have been enhanced. Sounds like the old "Victrola" days.
DISAPPOINTMENT WHAT IS YOUR NAME?.......2005-05-20
I recently bought this CD. The beautiful TENNESSEE WALTZ is no more. What a disappointment. Can someone explain to me why it is that when a song is a multi-million seller and works well in the original, some executive somewhere decides to re-arrange it? This is a fiasco. However, the re-arrangement of CHANGING PARTNERS works well. So all is not lost. To be avoided.
ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS "RERECORDINGS" OF 11 OF PATTI'S BIGGEST.......2004-01-15
No, these are not the original hit 78s/45s of these songs from her Mercury days, these were recorded for the original Columbia album in 1965 or 1966. This is what these late 40s/early 50s songs would have sounded like had they originally been recorded in the 60s with lush orchestration and great stereo sound.
Patti's performance on these songs is absolutely flawless. Her voice is at it's best, silky smooth and resonant.
I'm a long time Patti fan and comparing these to the original hits is unfair. These recordings were definitely made to take advantage of song name value and Patti name value but Columbia was smart enough not to make mere copies of the originals. In many cases the arrangements are probably better than the originals: With My Eyes Wide Open, Old Cape Cod, Detour, Cross Over the Bridge. My only disappointment was the bluesy feel of Tennessee Waltz but then again Patti has sung Tennessee Waltz thousands of times and I've heard it that many times too. I'm always happy to pull out this CD to hear a different arrangement.
If you buy this CD expecting it to be the original Mercury million sellers you will be disappointed. But if you buy it to hear Patti at her peak performance, you will be very satsified.

Though Bobby Bare is not as well remembered as many of his outlaw country compatriots of the 1970s and '80s, his long career was instrumental in blurring the lines between country and folk music, and in bringing pop and rock influences to Nashville production. Collecting songs recorded between 1978 and 1983, Bare Tracks highlights hits and misses alike. Boudleaux Bryant, Guy Clark, and Tom T. Hall all contribute songs, but the chime-in-if-you're-feelin'-it atmosphere of Shel Silverstein's novelty songs like "Greasy Grit Gravy" (featuring Willie Nelson and a cast of characters), "Tequila Sheila," and "Numbers" (a No. 1 hit) are where the real fun begins. Guest appearances come from Charlie Daniels and Rosanne Cash, who contributes a fine duet on husband Rodney Crowell's "No Memories Hangin' Round." --Alexandra Russell

This CD is another great CD from Bobby Bear collection a must for BOBBY Bear fans. The price was great another hard to find CD in stores.
Not his best.......2002-12-19
Bobby Bare is a great singer, one of the most underrated country singers ever. However, most of the songs on this cd pale in comparison to his earlier work like "Detroit City" and "Millers Cave".

Bare Tracks Through Moderate Material.......2000-04-15
Bobby Bare is undeniably a legendary songwriter and performer; when he is at his best, as on his classic "Lullaby's, Legends and Lies", he exudes an intelligence and charm that elude most performers today. Over the course of his long and varied career, Bare has recorded for several labels, and this release, "Bare Tracks", attempts to summarize his seven-year stint at Columbia, with mixed results. One of Bare's strengths is his ability to transcend the most mediocre of material and unfortunately, there's plenty to be found on this release. When he and his songwriting collaborator Shel Silverstein are at their peak (as on the two best-known tracks here, "Numbers" and "Tequila Shiela"), Bare is simply unstoppable, with all of his prodigious talent on display. Unfortunately, several of Silverstein's other songs seem unmotivated and careless; Bare fights hard to maintain sheds of dignity in tracks like "Greasy-Grit Gravy", "Food Blues" and "Diet Song", but he succumbs to the sub-par material. He turns in some stunning work on two Guy Clark cuts, "Let Him Roll" and "New Cut Road", but the album as a whole seems distant and unstable. Personal Favorites: the sharp commentary on gender communication found in "Numbers"; the twisted tale of a fugitive on the run in "Tequila Shiela"; and the rollicking rhythm bouncing down "New Cut Road". Representative Lyrics: "She said, 'Well, another one of those macho 'matician men/ Trying to grade all women on a scale from one to ten!/ Now you give me an eight?/ Well, that's a generous thing to do/ Now let's just see just how much I give YOU.'" ("Numbers"); "Pour me another tequila, Shiela/ Take off your new satin dress/ I crossed the border/ And I beat the dealer/ For all of the gold in Juarez." ("Tequila Shiela")
