Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

These songs will melt and break your heart. Listeners accustomed to Schumann's single-poet cycles may be surprised at the poems' uneven quality, and that, like Schubert, he could set them all with equal empathy. The program includes famous and unfamiliar songs from both Schumann's early fertile and more barren later years, mostly love offerings for Clara: hopeful, anxious, ardent, passionate, as well as somber, sorrowful and despairing. Goerne opens with the vigorous "Ins Freie," then groups the songs around a mood, allowing the listener--and himself--to become fully one with it. This means many slow, pensive, inward, tender, yearning songs in succession, but they contain so much diversity that there is never a hint of sameness. Besides, the singing is absolutely riveting. Goerne's voice is like soft, dark velvet; its warmth enfolds the listener's ear with a caressing, aching beauty and purity. Its variety of color and nuance is matched by Goerne's range of expression and intensity; he can evoke the ghostly apparitions in "Mein Wagen rollet langsam," project the soaring ecstasy in "Widmung," the sorrow of parting, the chaste adoration of a flower for the moon, and the menace of the dramatic ballads "Die Löwenbraut" and "Belsazar." Even that old chestnut, "Die beiden Grenadiere," becomes both moving and heroic. Songs of Love, Longing, and Loss.......2005-06-02

Subtlety and intimacy seem to be the inspiration for this truly wonderful set of Schumann's songs of love remembered, lost, and longed for, and Matthias Goerne interprets them to perfection. Goerne's voice is rich and elegant and text-sensitive and when he sings the softer songs here, his mastery of technique is one of wonder.

Not all of the songs included in this recital are well known: many of these selections are from both ends of the composer's life spectrum. This recording should bring the lesser-known songs to the attention of other singers! Though Goerne's voice is never less than beautiful his forte appears to be the quiet, intimate songs where he is able to create a delicacy and sadness that are almost unbearably lovely.

Goerne is ably partnered by Eric Schneider at the piano. They communicate well and demonstrate that mutual respect that signals fine collaboration. This is a treasureable album and is further evidence that Matthias Goerne is one of our leading lieder recitalists today. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, June 05

Operatic Schubert that works, for once.......2006-01-09

Bryn Terfel issn't the first heroic bass-baritone to try lieder singing, but for every Hans Hotter who succeeds there's a George London who doesn't. In opera a singer who expresses an inward emotion msut still fill the house with sound. Terfel knows how to scale his voice to a whisper, but that would just be a trick if he didn't go inside personally. He can do that very well while singing strongly--a rare gift--and he dares to employ the high dramatics of oprea, flooding the listener with gorgeous vocalism while maintaining contact with Schubert's intent.

I don't mean to sound so clinical. The simple secret of Terfel's success is his ability to communicate. Every song here is familiar, but whether in Die Forelle, Erlkonig, or Der Musensohn, he finds a way to chatacterize the words emotionally--in this his success mirrors Jessye Norman's, who also sang a thrilling Schubert recital early in her career that gloried in her huge sound instead of trying to supress it. With this 1994 CD and his "Vagabond" recital of English art songs Terfel secured his place at the top of the singing world.

My first recording with Bryn Terfel and I love it!.......2004-02-17

If there is a man who can sing his heart out with Schubert, it's Bryn Terfel. His voice is very much like chiaroscuro; light like the morning dawn, loud like the tearing thunder or gathering waves! The welsh baritone sings the songs as if he feels them and is bursting out his soul. As he said when singing a Mozart opera as I read, "I'm going to sing the hell out of this!". But hell sounds too much like heaven. The arist has a gift and he uses it to the extent. And Die Musik is one disc everyone should have in their collection.

Terfel's all-encompassing Schubert recital.......2003-10-23

This Schubert CD is one of the first high notes in Bryn Terfel's solo discography for DG. Although you might find him at home singing Rodgers & Hammerstein musical excerpts, or a popular Welsh song, this recital of Schubert shows Terfel as sympathetic when he interprets the lieder of this Austrian "sunshine composer." Terfel leads us through a good 69 minutes of 23 favourite Schubert songs, ably backed by the authoritative piano accompaniments of Malcolm Martineau that create the effect of a magic carpet for Bryn, and engage in a sparkling dialogue with him. And DG has ably capped this winning recital with a natural, ambient and clear recording in Hamburg's Friedrich-Ebert Halle .

Terfel's Schubert recital encompasses a great range of moods and emotions. These range from the joie de vivre of "Die Forelle" to the tender, soft and seductive strains of the overplayed "Standchen." In these two immensely popular songs, Terfel gives the Midas touch until you sense it turning into gold. Terfel is also able to let us face the apocalyptic terror of the first song, "Gruppe aus dem Tartarus" and the smooth-talking malevolance of "Der Tod und das Madtchen." But yet, Terfel also treats us to selections that we know are enjoyable, and where he ably evokes the appropriate mood of each song. In his restless "Der Wanderer," he sings it until he makes us want to cry because he evokes the mood of the narrator's restless sould so vividly. There is also a hair-raising and dramatic "Erlkonig" where Terfel ably creates contrasts between the three characters in the story. But perhaps the best songs are those where he savours every moment and has an honest, winning expression. His rendition of the title track, "An die Musik" has a sincere and simple charm that matches the sentiments of the song, and he is able to convey to us the wonder of "Gaymed" and the charming Shakespearean song, "An Silvia." He caps this winning persona with a delightful "Heidenrslein" and "Die Taubenpost" and a cheerful and outgoing rendition of the last song, "Der Musensohn." The only wuibble I have is that 70 minutes is too short to hear Terfel tackle the all-important Schubert songs from his over-600, and I do hope he'll consider recording a volume 2 in the near future. This album seems to omit some of the other well-loved songs like Der Lindenbaum, Fruhlingsglaube, Gretchen am Spinnrade, Horch, horch die Lerch and the original version of Ave Maria with the German translation of Scott.

On the whole, I find this a wonderful Terfel recital of Schubert lieder, and Terfel seems like he is savouring every moment of it. This is one of the essential purchases for anyone who is getting into Bryn Terfel, and should be well-considered alongside the Rodgers & Hammerstein and Welsh albums. Now I wonder when Terfel will come up with a Volume 2 with more well-known Lieder...

Die Forelle und ErlKoenig.......2001-10-22

This is really a delightful CD. I was amazed by the interpretation of "Der Erlkoenig" und thoroughly enjoyed
"Die Forelle". It feels like a brave and extaordinarily
capable voice was at work in the making of this CD.
Very gifted singer !

A superb performance.......2001-04-21

This recording shows very well what Bryn Terfel can do with lieder. He is more dramatic than many rivals - not afraid to use full voice at times or a faint whisper. His Erlkonig is possibly the finest thing on this recording - the characterizations may be too extreme for some tastes, but shows Terfel's ability to capture the listener. Martineau rises superbly to the challenge of supporting this great voice. The recording is also very realistic.

When the subject of 18th-century music comes up, the United States is rarely considered any sort of creative artistic bastion. But this collection of Moravian religious music reveals how deep a fallacy it is to write off the U.S. as unimportant in vocal music history. The Moravian Church, founded on the cusp of the 14th and 15th centuries, would generate a distinctly musical worship tradition in the 1700s, just prior to the first Moravians settling in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Once in Pennsylvania, the music flowed at a brisk pace, comprising significant sections of worship ceremonies. Composers included in this collection reflect two particular facets of the music: its harmonic simplicity and its abiding spiritual values. Of course, "simplicity" is an easily derogatory descriptive, but that is not at all the case here. These choral works display tremendous richness and depth, with traces of J.S. Bach's cantatas as well as works by Haydn and even Mozart, who developed on a parallel musical track to the Moravians. And there are pop smarts here, too: One of the songs even quotes the Star Spangled Banner, then a ditty for the masses. The period instruments create a fine chamber background--music that floats without weighting the vocals or tearing ears away. A second bonus CD contains an extended discussion with Martin Pearlman, whose discussion of the music is more than enlightening. --Andrew Bartlett

This recording truly seems to capture the spirit of the music. As someone who grew up singing in the Moravian church, this cd is a FIND. I listened with joy and surprise to this collection. The execution is tender, passionate, thoughtful. The balance between vocals and chamber orchestra is lovely, as close to perfect as one might imagine. I know many of the works on this cd as hymns and choral anthems, albeit in English. The uplifting musicality as an important part of worship was and continues to be part of the life of the Moravian church. The Moravian tradition embodies folk music in an authentic fashion, where the music of the church is truly the music of the people. Singing is a part of all activities within the church, providing a fabric through which fellowship and goodwill can flow. Somehow, the spirit of the context is captured here. The commentary by Martin Pearlman is quite informative and respectful. For individuals for whom music in the church has been more than an interlude in worship, for other Moravians out there who are far from the fold and can still hear the echoes, for those who are curious and want to listen to something slightly, pleasantly, off the beaten path, you will not be disappointed.

This is very pretty music. It reminds me in some ways of Handel's Messiah, but it has a sound all its own. The voices and instruments are supurb. I really enjoyed the accompanying insert in the CD, which gives a small biography of all the composers. There are complete lyrics in English and German as well. I would love to get the sheet music and perform it!

I just heard the Christmas section on PBS radio. "Lost music"? As one raised in the Moravian tradition, I can sing along with some of these chorales in English. Why? Because songs such as "Thou Child Divine" are sung every year at Christmas even today. I am ordering to see whether translations are provided. Also, to compare with other current reworkings of the classical Moravian composers. As a footnote, the Moravian Music Foundation publishes newly found works from the archives every two or three years. Thus many works are not lost, but newly mined.

When it comes to organ music there's Bach, and there's everyone else. The actual amount of organ music that he composed is in dispute for a couple of reasons. On issue is attribution: much of the music exists only in copies from Bach's pupils and family members, and so the question of authorship may be in doubt. The other issue is which instrument Bach actually intended some of the keyboard music to be played on. Although scholars agonize over this problem, the fact is that Bach's music usually sounds fine played even on kazoos--it's almost indestructible--so the organ suits it in any case. This collection is one of the most comprehensive available, and it's excellently played and recorded. --David Hurwitz

One of the great CD sets of all time.......2006-02-08

Like another reviewer here I grew up on Helmut Walcha's DG set on LP, and was also familiar with a number of other "great Bach organ work" collections.

One can cavil over the way Hurford takes some of the pieces, I suppose, but his flair, imaginative registrations, and sheer musicality are hard to beat, and the recording too is fantastic.

It's quite easy to listen to three or four CDs from this set in a row, which says something about how fertile Bach's imagination, but also how absorbing Hurford's performance, and how willing he is to avoid generic and worthy church-like interpretations. This is music and music-making of the highest quality.

A lot of reviews rave about this set. I just wish they would say why it's so good and I hope they're, well, comparing it to something. Most seem to like the "choice of registration" which maybe one way an organist sizes another up.

Preferences in interpretation generally reflect the emphera of a time, and not absolutes. Choice one for this guy is probably Walcha. Dignified and insightful playing probably much more in line with what was expected of, and provided by, Bach way back when.

This set is flashier and lighter in some ways, more bombastic in others--very much a late Twentieth Century effort. Superficial. It suits a less thoughtful approach to the music which isn't a bad thing and isn't necessarily "damning with faint praise." I just doubt if this is really what the music should sound like and I don't mean that in the same way when I say that about Gould's playing. Gould was highlighting an intense part of Bach's craft, pointing the way into the music so to say.

This is a good set for those who like to shake the timbers with organ music; when it was first released in the early digital era it was marketed that way. Bach's music is pretty bullet-proof so it can stand this kind of approach. If you're not a hyper-critical listener, a period instrument hardliner, or a professional organist with strong well thought out opinions this is probably the set for you as the Walcha will sound dry and academic. On the other hand, if you are a powerful admirer of rock and roll classical this might actually be way too much Bach for you. I generally play this set (or Stokowski transcriptions) when I'm in a brain-dead mood and I want Bach-like stimulation without any work on my part. It's really quite nice.

Bach the organ works.......2004-11-23

A poor, jumpy, amateurish and unimaginative rendition of the pedal exercitium in g minor is what sticks to mind. Although its only an exercise i think it's worth more than that. More interesting stop combinations could have been used here. The toccata and fugue in d minor was too 'fancy' and was a boring affair overall with a silly choice of stops. I expected more from Peter Hurford. If this is the first time you've heard organ music please don't run away beacause of this. It can be so much more intersting.

Overall i dont think these performances do Bach Justice. Better versions can be found at virtuallybaroque.com (not my site)and better still competely free.

Peter Hurford's traversal of the entire organ literature for London Decca is truly one of the greatest recorded achievements. All of the performances in this seventeen-disc set are immaculately played and perfectly performed. His vision, technicality, and sensibility make him a sensitive and authoritative interpreter of J.S. Bach's organ works. The records are mostly digital, crystal clear, and quite powerful. Hurford's command of his technique is astounding. I cannot stress how important this set truly is. I HIGHLY recommend buying this compilation. At about 8 dollars a CD, this is most certainly a steal.

Bach's organ works place incredible demands on the performer, both physically (consider the endurance it takes to play the massive Toccata in F major), technically (the Trio Sonatas, among many others), and interpretationally. Peter Hurford triumphantly meets those demands in a spectacular set of recordings.

To those who are doubters: listen to the (in)famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, that overplayed warhorse. Hurford brings to it an electricity that makes you feel you are hearing it for the first time again. He also has an amazing ear for registrations, one of the most underestimated difficulties of an organist's art, never wearying the ear, but using a wide palette of colors. [Bach himself was widely known for his innovative registrational practices. Contemporaries remarked that when he was testing organs he would pull combinations of stops that they were certain would sound badly together, only to find that he had created an entirely new sound. Thus, creative registrations should not offend purists in any way.]

Hurford's approach to these works obviously takes into consideration, but is certainly not bound by, historically informed performing practices. His phrasing is immaculate, and consistently interesting. In all, this is a stunning accomplishment.

GET THIS WHILE IT REMAINS AVAILABLE. The classical recording industry is in trouble, and the deletions axe is constantly falling. Large, expensive sets like this are sure to go. While the price itself appears high, it is really very reasonable, running under $8 per disc.

Complete set CD review of Bach.......2007-05-12

I discovered Bach organ music 40 years ago. I love Bach, everything he wrote. I have 4 complete sets of Bach organ recordings. Marie Claire-Alan is my favorite organist of everyone I have heard. I met Marie and her husband in person after a performance she gave in Chicago. I have 2 complete sets of Bach organ played by Marie. One is on records and the other the new CD set. She is a little older now when she recorded the CD's. The albums have a more youthful sound to them, a little more energy and different registration selection on the organs. I love Marie in her youthful recordings more than these. I love the albums so much I will digitize them and listen to them over the new CD collection. I play the albums on my Linn turntable through McIntosh equipment.

The Definitive Collection of Bach .......2005-09-25

Marie-Claire Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music 3 times, this set being the second time. She plays quite differently now, but these are some of the best interpretations. Each cd fearures a different organ dating from Bach's time, and all of the booklets are filled with pictures, history, and even the stop registrations for each of the pieces are given. Quite alot of research! If those of you who are new to Bach's organ works, I would recommend starting on a smaller scale, as some of these works can be quite intense to listen to. At any rate, this possibly may go down as one of the famous recordings of the century.

Monumental Artistry.......2003-03-08

Although I am partial to the Romantic Organ, particularly in the vein of Widor, Vierne and Rheinberger, it all begins with Bach. And in this case, one could say that it all begins with Marie-Claire Alain and her wonderful interpretations. Alain seems to understand that Bach was above all else a religious composer. Many "complete" works of Bach play short shrift with the liturgical works whereas these are some of the most satisfying of the group.

The sound is pure sonority, almost perfect, and the technical prowess is just awesome. Out of the millions of notes played, I never heard a miscue or slight jiggle. Still, keyboard wizardry is only part of the story. The registration is a work of art in itself. Alain understand the difference between the Baroque and the Modern, the French and the German and the old and the new. Just as she is a "natural" for Widor or Vierne, she also seems to have entered the Bach mind on some of these.

This is a fabulous collection worthy of any serious student of classical music. Nowhere can one derive such satisfaction that listenting to Bach played by Ms. Alain.

Bach on the Organ.......2001-06-23

What? Just 2 reviews?? I've had this set for close to 4 years. Where do I start..... To tell the story of Bach and the organ, I must start at the beginning. I harbor no pretext of being an authority at all, in fact I really didn't know Bach till a few years ago.

One day, I chanced to buy a CD with an assortment of classical music. I did that once every so often, since classical CD's are so cheap. I slipped it into my car not knowing at all what I'd just stumbled on. The second piece on this CD was music of an order I had not yet before encountered. To boot, I had just installed a new subwoofer in the car. Then this organ piece comes on.

My friends. From that moment, I was a different person. It didn't hit me as hard initially, but I couldn't let go of this stupendous work of such magnificence. For days on end, I would play this one piece of organ music. Treasuring it as a jewel. I couldn't get over how grand, how utterly wonderful this work was, from every single note to it's entire whole. I've always enjoyed music, but this was something else. It made me feel miniscule. How could anyone.... I'm a financial consultant, and gosh did this make me feel worthless. Alright, I'll let you know which it was --Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (Dorian) for the organ. Not even one of Bach's major pieces. This was Miklos Spanyi on organ who did this. Marie-Claire does a good job on this set, but I had heard it first on the other recording, and you know it's never as good as the first time.

Brethren, this wasn't the end. After a few weeks of listening to this, I kid you not, I would break down like a child when I played it. Sobbing and crying. Weeping uncontrollably. I'm a grown man, but it happened. I could not understand. I could not remember breaking down this way, so violently, since I was young boy. I am not a sop at all, one of those guys with a soft feminine side........no, no, no. This is what Bach can do to you.

I was listening to angels. I could see them. No way I'll write my full name here in case this gets out. If I listened to it in the car, I would have to stop when Bach's counterpoints started their agonizing attacks of sheer splendor. I would stop the car on the side of the road, racked in sobs. I stopped listening to it in the morning going to work because my eyes would be red when I got into the office. In oblivion, driving home one night I did get a speeding ticket.

I would be convulsing in anguish. As the Toccata builds to its end, Bach brings your pitiful soul through a wavy staircase lined with golden crescendos that don't seem to end. He then takes your wretched spirit, once strong, but piteous in the face of such perfection, and places it on the doorstep of the Fugue. At this grand entrance on the cadence, at this very point I would invariably be out of control, bawling like a babe.

It was then I needed to see who this Bach was. Then I see a complete set of Bach Organ Works by a renowned organist. I was trembling when I got the set. It's about 3 years now, and I have since learned how to control myself. I am sorry I talk about Bach's organ and his effect on me, but please, I was just describing one gem. This is the collection. Buy it and be immersed in wonder.

There is good literature that goes with the set. If you are looking for sentiment and give up a little bit of quality, you'll notice some difference. The recordings are excellent, but the idea of this grand project was to have it on a baroque organ, sounding like it would back then.

They do mention the need for the organist to have to coax and cajole the instrument, unlike the modern electronic machines. The recordings are on a restored organ, which at first made me a little disappointed, but after a while you realize it presents the organist's talent quite a bit more. I also love hearing the slight sounds of the stops in the background - just that added sense of needing to be on earth before reaching glory.

A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19

EMI commemorate in this double CD a remarkable partnership in the C20th world of music. It began in Berlin in 1926. It had been 20 years since Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" became the light opera that everyone wanted to see. In places like Beunos Aires it had run simultaneously in five theatres in five different languages. Lehar's subsequent productions had met with diminishing success. His latest light opera, "Paganini", which contained some of his best music, had flopped at its Vienna premiere. Nervous and dispirited as its Berlin premiere drew near, Lehar wrote to the tenor Richard Tauber, "You must sing in Berlin, a second flop is inconceivable for me. I'm suddenly afraid of everything to do with the theatre - I'm getting old".

Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.

Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.

I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.

Tauber, I believe, somehow had the secret of touching the hearts and minds of all who listened to his singing - composers, colleagues, chancellors and charwomen. This comprehensive and well-planned issue will ensure that his work with the Hungarian composer Franz Lehar will continue to charm and delight.
