The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

The music is well performed, well written, and well put togehter. Each song seems to complement the next. Overall, one of the best CDs I have ever purchased

Hoist The Colours!!!.......2007-07-25
The CD "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is unbelievably the best CD of the three. It contains 13 tracks including, one of my favorites, Hoist the Colours (the song the boy sings at the beginning of the movie, which becomes the back tone of the entire movie). It is a must buy for all soundtrack, movie, Disney and pirate lovers. I have never listened to a soundtrack this much since John Williams Star Wars Episode 1 Special Edition CD.
But there is a draw back for me. The CD is a Digipak. A Digipak is a CD that has cardboard-like outside rather than a plastic cover like most CD's. I don't `hate' them, I just don't like seeing things of mine getting ripped. So if you don't want your case/album art warped, get it on iTunes.
Overall it is a great CD and a must buy! " Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" soundtrack gets 5 stars out of 5.

Palacio is from Belize and his music celebrates a culture called Garifuna, in which indigenous Arawak and Carib sounds, plus West African influences imported during the dark years of the slave trade are twisted around one another like a helix. Over the centuries, fiercely independent tribes-people maintained their identity even as European colonizers relentlessly pushed them from St. Vincent, where the Africans had been shipwrecked and intermarried with the local population, toward the Central American coast. But more recently, the culture had begun losing ground, especially in Nicaragua, a fact brought to Palacio's attention when he visited that nation as teenage literacy advocate. His impassioned espousal of his birthright began when he got involved with punta rock, a synth-and-drum-machine-driven dance style popular during the 1990s. The present album represents a return to his roots. Blended Native, African and Latin exhalations create softly pretty, simply constructed, yet indelible melodies while percolating, hypnotic rhythms, some of which are anchored by a prominent Afro-Cuban clavé, get everyone moving. The songs are sung exclusively in the Garifuna language and built around folkloric sources like the ritual-based dügü. There's not a false note anywhere in earshot but "Yagane", a seafaring tune composed by and performed with Paul Nabor, a septuagenarian buyei (spiritual healer), is one stand-out; the delightful title track is another. The CD is enhanced with videos and other extras. --Christina RodenAlbum Description
These soul-stirring melodies and vibrant grooves from the Garifuna community of Central America unite the musical legacies of Africa and the Caribbean to create a powerful saga of exile, longing, hope and celebration. Years in the making, Watina is infused with contemporary influences, yet firmly rooted in the rich musical traditions of this unique and inspiring culture. Belizean icon, Andy Palacio, leads an all-star, multi-generational lineup to deliver a monumental tribute to the Garifuna of yesterday and tomorrow.* 32-page booklet features full lyrics and stunning photographs.
* Deluxe enhanced CD includes "making of" video and a preview of the upcoming Garifuna women's project "Umalali".
* The third release from Cumbancha, the new label founded by the head of music research at Putumayo World Music.

Cross-cultural wonderfulness.......2007-06-30
Not a great World Music album - just a great album.......2007-05-23
The growing number of people who listen to World Music will instantly recognise this as a classic. But it deserves to be heard much more widely than the World Music circuit. Songs like Weyu Lariga Weyu should be being played on the radio and in the shops.
I knew nothing of Garifuna and had never heard of Andy Palacio until a week or so ago. Now I can't get the music out of my head and I've fallen in love with a place I have never been to (and probably never will) and a people whom I have never met. That's how good this album is.
Andy Palacio's welcome return to his roots.......2007-05-17
Andy Palacio's return to his roots has led not only to a revival of Garifuna language and culture, but is a joy for world music fans who delight in earthy, powerful music. "Watina" is a savory blend of reggae-flavored music such as "Lidan Aban" (Together) and the bluesy laments of "Sin Precio" (Worthless), "Ayo Da" (Goodbye my dear) and the title track. There is the reverent sacred music of "Baba" (Father),"Weyu Larigi Weyu" (Day by Day) and "Aguyuha Nidudenu" (My people have moved on). The jazzy, frothy song "Miami" isn't about the Florida metropolis, but about injustice in that city in Honduras. The closing song, "Amunegu" (In times to come),is a hopeful gaze to the future.
There isn't a single weak song on this album. It's a perfect introduction to the music of Belize (too often overshadowed by Argentina, the tango capital of the world and Brazil with its sambas and bossa novas) and Garifuna culture. It's a must for any world music collection!
Life is a beach.......2007-05-06
Could this be the most enjoyable World CD since...Buena Vista?.......2007-04-10
Andy Palacio doesn't have Buena Vista's advantages. He's from Belize, the least-populated country in Central America. His music celebrates the Garifunan culture, which is known to maybe five American Caucasians. And although his record company couldn't be more distinguished in World Music circles --- Jacob Edgar, its founder, was head of A&R at Putamayo --- few of you have heard of him or his sparkling label, Cumbancha.
No matter. This musician you've never heard of, singing in a language spoken by no more than a few hundred thousand people, has delivered what could easily be the most enjoyable CD of the year.
What's it like? Everything. And that's the key to the music.
In the 1700s, West African slaves were shipwrecked on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. They intermarried with Arawak Indians and lived peacefully until the English forced them into exile on a small, resource-poor island off Honduras. They moved on to the mainland, but their identity has blurred over the centuries. Now there are just 11,500 Garifunans living in Belize --- and the Garifunan language, which is taught in only one village there, has been designated by the United Nations as among the "masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity."
Andy Palacio, a Garifunan from Belize, once modified his culture's music so it would have wider appeal. But the threat that it might become extinct encouraged him to return to his roots. And so he assembled all-star Garifunan musicians in a thatched-roof shack on Belize's Caribbean coast and spent four months with that band, playing endangered music deep into the night.
The musicologist in me wants to tell you about the richness to be found here: the sexy thrust you'll find in the Cape Verde songs of Cesaria Evora, the raw vocals reminiscent of the Peter Tosh era with The Wailers, the lyrics about life's everyday challenges that could have been written by Ali Farka Toure or Boubacar Traore --- and, of course, the joyous bounce of Buena Vista.
But it's the enthusiast in me that carries the day. Here are 12 songs, each radically different, that, taken together, form a classic mosaic. The electric guitar couldn't be more seductive, the drumming catchier, the lead vocals more urgent, the harmonies more subtle. This CD is as irresistible as Amadou & Mariam --- you will leave your chair.
As I write, the music industry in America is facing the greatest crisis in its history --- it can't find much to sell that you care about. Well, here are some poor musicians no one ever heard of, who made the recording of their lives without any thought of fame or fortune. And here's a guy in a Vermont farmhouse, lavishing beautiful packaging and energetic promotion on these nonentities.
And what's the outcome?
For one of the planet's smallest subcultures, a moment of bracing attention.
For you, satisfaction on the order of Buena Vista --- and maybe greater.
No kidding about that. Andy Palacio and his friends aren't just good, they're seriously great.

Disney's Greatest 3

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

Product Description
This CD is a joyous celebration of Caribbean music and culture that will delight children and adults. It includes songs such as All Aboard (Trinidad), Train is Coming (Jamaica), and Little Anancy (Trinidad).Amazon.com
Caribbean Playground is a sun-dappled disc that jigsaws the region into eight bright musical pieces, each with a surprisingly distinct sound.Reggae dominates, getting its rub-a-dub-roasted warmth across by way of "Three Little Birds," "Jamaica Farewell," and others, but it doesn't drown out Trinidadian soca, Puerto Rican bomba, or Haiti's lovely, acoustic-heavy twoubadou. Add to that the vocal magnetism of a lot of these artists--Taj Mahal and the Wailers among them--and Putumayo's expected above-the-call packaging, and you get a CD that's cooler than a Kingston street fair, only easier on little kid ears (and lungs). -Tammy La Gorce

Putumayo music.......2007-01-06
This is great (not my type of music but then it wasn't for me!! I listened to the local library copy). Hence only the four stars.
All the tunes are well thought out, accurately represent the culture the particular cd focuses on and they're upbeat enough to capture your young one's attention whilst not becoming a source of annoyance to any adult within listening distance.

Browse their website for the whole range of music.
I own their African Women and African Playground cd's and their Celtic Crossroads cd. All of which are incredibly pleasant to listen to, given that their primary audience is children.
Buy buy buy!! You'll not be disappointed.
A Caribbean playground for all ages.......2005-05-31
I enjoyed ALL the songs on this CD. It has old favorites like "Jamaica Farewell" and "Coconut Woman" (kids of all ages will love the "co-co-nut" refrain in this one, as well as the roaring "lion"!), in addition to a zydeco version of Bob Marley's classic "Three Little Birds." Kids will also love "Little Anancy," as many are familiar with Anancy/Ananse spider stories from school. And even though I could not understand much of "Bomba Te Traigo Yo" (sung in Spanish) or "Votez Zouk" (sung in French), the addictive beats of bomba and zouk respectively had me dancing around the room! You too will be glad that this CD "brings you bomba" and makes you want to "vote for zouk!"
Nice Compilation.......2005-02-04
Not Just for Kids!.......2004-11-18
But don't limit this collection to the playground just because of its title; many an adult - especially those new to the genre - will appreciate the variety, which includes a Louisiana zydeco band influenced by Caribbean culture (Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band).

What's with the organ?.......2007-03-21
I was so disappointed when I received this album...the sound of the steel drums are completely ruined by the addition of one of those old organs everybody's goofy uncle had in the 60s and 70s. You know the ones...they let you put a samba, bossa nova or fox trot beat over every Billy Joel song you tried to play.
It's a shame, because it is a nice selection of songs, but it turns the beautiful tropical music into a kitschy tiki lounge experience instead.

The Caribbean is home to a string of tourism-friendly island nations and some of the world's most amazing music. Along with lush vegetation, sugar-sand beaches, and spicy food, each island is defined by its local sound, which remains fairly consistent whether the lyrics deal with partying, courtship, or social protest. This set is devoted to dance-oriented Haitian compas, Jamaican reggae, zouk from the French Antilles, and Trinidadian calypso's faster and more rhythmically intense descendant, soca (from SOul-CAlypso). The Martinican star Kali's "L'Histoire de Zouk" tells the tale via snippets from the past, while his neighbor Eric Virgal's hit, "Pa Fe Mwen La Pen," is a gooey romantic ballad. Krosfyah ups the ante with "Pump Me Up," a sassy carnival anthem that provides an enjoyable contrast to the low-down, earthy swing of Bunny Wailer's "Roots, Rock Reggae," and the bawdy double-entendres of Coalishun's "Ice Cream." --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean morna and Hawaiian slack-key guitar, and the hits just keep on coming. The tunes on this set are not terribly revealing about their place of origin, but plenty of likable grooves turn up, primarily dance-oriented party fodder. It's like a casual tourist's piña colada-fueled vacation fantasy: a very pretty and colorful interlude that doesn't have much to do with real life in either place. It's perfect for lazy summer days and nights, ethnic banquets, and tropical-themed celebrations. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
