4 out of 5 stars Glad I Bought This One!.......2007-08-02

I heard "The Lament for the Harp Key" on the radio about 20 years ago. It is track #9 on this recording. The tune and arrangement has stayed with me all those years. It's deeply haunting and evocative. A real stand out performance in Celtic folk music. It was worth the price just to get a clear copy of that 8:11 masterpiece. The rest of the cd is gentle and beautiful. I look forward to discovering what it has to offer with repeated listening. I was reading the other review that said Alison's harp was out of tune. It may be, but I'm not a trained musician, so thankfully, I can't detect it. It all sounds pretty to me.

She's a excellent harpist and the tunes are fine. Problem is her harp sounds considerably out of tune on several of the tracks. It's almost painful to listen to them. I find I don't listen to the CD because I'm alway wincing when she hits the bad strings!

I am swept away every time I hear this music. I first discovered Alison Kinnaird when I was digging through my cassettes one day. I found a tape that was labeled "radio songs" and I put it in, expecting to hear the usual boring top 40 hits. Instead, I was surprised and delighted to hear this Scottish harp music. I couldn't stop listening, and I brought the tape with me wherever I went. I am still listening to it, and I love it. I don't have this CD yet, but I'm planning to get it. All of the songs on my tape are on this CD, and I love them so very much. Whenever I listen to Scottish or Irish music, I enter other worlds, and find myself daydreaming. If you're like me, you'll love Alison Kinnaird on the Scottish Harp.

      Album Description

Monk's 1965 realization that the voice could have the same flexibility and range of movement as a spine or a foot, and that one could find and build a personal vocabulary for the voice led to this invisible theatre classic.

This CD is the re-release of the landmark first recording of Meredith Monk's earliest compositions for voice. The songs that make up Key were composed and performed in a 3-year period between 1967 and 1970, when Monk collected them into this 45-minute invisible theater experience.

The songs that make up Key were composed and performed in a three-year period between 1967 and 1970, when Monk collected them into this 45-minute invisible theater experience. Now, 25 years later, the long-playing qualities of a CD make a seamless hearing of Monk's piece possible.

Some time in late 1965 I suddenly had a revelation that the voice could have the same flexibility and range of movement as a spine or a foot, and that one could find and build a personal vocabulary for the voice just as one makes movement based on a particular body. I realized then that within the voice are myriad characters, landscapes, colors and textures. From that time on, I began working with my own instrument-trying to discover the voices within it.-Meredith Monk

      4 out of 5 stars Vintage Monk.......2004-12-20

I first bought this album on an LP issue. It is a fascinating look (listen) at Meredith Monk's early formative years. She was just then perfecting the extended vocal techniques which continue to typify her style. The recording is not the best but the ambience is that of the loft in which it was recorded. This is a must for Monk fans but worth a listen even if you are not a die hard fan.

          Album Description

Yonnet's first, self-produced sampler cd, appropriately titled, Blowing Your Mind in Every Key of the Harp! showcases his musical range and fearless improvisations. "Mind blowing," is a common response after listening to his live version of Amazing Grace. The first stanza of Amazing Grace is soulfully paced while the second is highly energetic and spirit-filled. "Amazing Grace was actually a 'jam' recorded live at a church in Los Angeles," said Yonnet. "I had never played with the musicians before but once we connected, it was very powerful." This track is a good indication of the energy that comes through in his live performances.

The cd also includes original treatments of the jazz standard, Chicken, and the French standard, Autumn Leaves, a duo of bass and harmonica. French harmonicist and writer Michel Herblin write the two original tunes, Eden Legrand, which starts slow and builds to an intense and funky groove, and ArtSpace, which has a jazzy, reggae beat.
