Album Description

From the mountainous Kyrgyzstan, Jew's harps, fiddles, plucked stringed instruments, and powerful voices transmit the vibrant rhythms of nomadism and the serene atmosphere of the Kygyz mountains in a musical language as contemporary as it is ancient. This deluxe package launches Music of Central Asia, a multi-volume series that brings to life the diverse and remarkable musical culture of a region long inaccessible to outsiders. 18 tracks, 66 minutes, 48-page color booklet, photos, and bilingual lyrics; DVD contains series introduction, 24-minute film, interactive glossary, and map.

Music of Central Asia is a co-production of the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia, a program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. The aim of the series is to present leading exponents of Central Asia's rich and diverse musical heritage to listeners outside the region.

Volume 1 of the "Music of Central Asia" series, Tengir-Too: Mountain Music of Kyrgyzstan is a deluxe music CD and DVD combination that brings to life the diverse musical culture of a region that has long been inaccessible to outsiders. Embracing Kyrgyzstan Jewish traditions of the harp, fiddle and plucked string instruments as well as moving vocals, Tengir-Too includes a 48-page booklet with color photographs, comments upon the region and its music, and the vocals in their original language and English translation. Part 1 of a new trilogy that will lead you through some of the highlights (though not nearly all) of Central Asian music.
This series really must be heard and thought of as one work.
Highly recommended! The CDs themselves are top level productions, but the additional DVD and booklet in each is something that makes this particular series like "gold" for serious music lovers.

In the former Soviet Union, each of the 14 "Union Republics" (with the exception of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic) had its own "national anthem." This collection--by Soviet-era orchestras and choirs--is the only one of its kind. All of the former SSRs (Soviet Socialist Republics) are represented, along with the famous USSR anthem which was banished for a time under Boris Yeltsin but now (with new lyrics) lives again as the anthem of the Russian Federation.

The music represents the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Soviet Empire: the heroic melodies and broad harmonies of the USSR and Ukrainian anthems reflect the expansive gestures of Orthodox church music; the Georgian anthem draws from the dissonant harmonies of Georgian sacred and folk music; the Armenian anthem, by the famous Soviet-Armenian composer Khatchaturian, has the Middle Eastern feeling of the Armenian folk idiom.

The lyrics--which unfortunately are not translated--are typically bombastic. Verses expressing fealty to the "Party of Lenin" and praising the inspiring example of the "Great October" are normative. The word "glorious" appears to be inescapable. If you want a feeling for this style, check out the translations of the old USSR anthem available on the web.

Apart from their origins in different folk idioms, the musical styles tend to range from militant (Armenia and Azerbaijan) to sentimentally lyrical (Latvia and Lithuania). The Latvian anthem, in fact, is unique in this collection because it is the only one in which (without knowing the words) it is difficult to imagine that you are striding confidentially into the future in unity with the Party of Lenin following the heroic example of the Great October. Instead, the melody seems to evoke the quiet villages, rolling hills and gentle beaches of this small Baltic country. In contrast, the anthems of the Soviet Central Asian Republics are close in musical spirit to the score of any of Cecil B. DeMille's blockbuster Hollywood costume dramas. One can visualize hordes of heroic Kyrgyz, Uzbek or Turkmen horsemen sweeping across the dusty plains of Asia ... all in the name of socialism, of course.

Each of these anthems suffered a different fate after the USSR disappeared from history. The countries with the strongest national traditions (the Baltic states and Ukraine, for instance) restored older pre-Soviet anthems. Other republics retained the Soviet-era melody but wrote new lyrics. That was true especially of republics where the old Soviet nomenklatura still hold power: Belarus and Kazakhstan, for instance. Sadly, Armenia got rid of Khatchaturian's stirring composition: the music was, perhaps, too militant--and too confident of a glorious future--for a postmodern world.

This is a brilliant disc that succeeds in achieving the goal of all anthem arrangements; reconciling brilliant musicality with patriotic fervor. Strangely enough, the best-known anthems are among the weakest, Germany, Greece, Britain, Ireland, and Indonesia being below-par. However, the disc more than compensates for these errors with magnificent arrangements of Ghana, India, Karabagh, the Côte d'Ivoire, and even Guam and Kiribati; although better arrangements of Italy have been done, this one is above average. Perhaps the best tracks are Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, in my own opinion the best arrangements in the six-disc set. In all, this disc is overwhelming in its comprehensive approach, and unlike most massive collections of anthems, loses very little in the way of quality. This entire set is a definite must-buy for anyone seriously interested in national anthems.

If you're looking for full-bodied, admirably performed national anthems from Gabon to the Kyrgyz Republic, then this disc is for you. The rendition of Guinea's anthem alone is worth the purchase. Breiner's orchestration provides excellent balance, while allowing the brass full play when appropriate. A winner all the way around.

        I am a central asian music enthusiast,I think the music that comes out of those countries and that cultutre is just so stimulating for a western immagination and ear,it takes you right away into the nomadic and shamanic traditions that are still alive besides or mixed with islamic beleifs after having resisted though oppressive communism and annihilating soviet rule.
        Very sweet voice and gentle stinged music on this record that I would consider accessible also to"untrained ears"to the music of that side of the world.
