A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

An excellent collection of the best moments from one of the most influential heavy metal bands, this is a welcome alternative to the more complete Metal Works, for the fan who doesn't require quite so exhaustive a collection. This one has everything you'd expect, including the classics "Living After Midnight," "Breaking the Law," "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," "Ram It Down," and more. There are also some choice live tracks, including "Victims of Changes" and "Heading Out to the Highway." Not necessarily the best choice for the hardcore fan--who probably already has Metal Works and most (if not all) of the original albums anyway--but a fine greatest-hits collection. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
Weird compilation from metal's best band.......2007-07-31
Now, with this said, I will repeat my headline and say that this is a weird compilation. While they are right on with some of their best songs such as "breaking the law", "Green Manalishi" and "Hellion/Electric Eye" they are WAY off in other track selections. No "Exciter", "Sinner", "Screaming for Vengeance" or "Riding on the Wind"? Huh? What were these people on? What puzzles me even more is why in the world would you put "Metal Meltdown" on here and not put on "Painkiller" or "Touch of Evil" for that matter. Those two tracks were the best from the Painkiller album. And, while I actually do like "Turbo Lover" it doesn't belong because it is not as good as countless other tracks. It is the best off of the Turbo album but let's be honest here, that album only had "Turbo Lover" and "Out in the Cold" while the rest of the album was just plain bad.
If you seriously want a taste of Judas Priest I've got three better suggestions for you. 1. Metalworks. Metalworks is the best Priest compilation; it honestly has ALL of their best for the most part and isn't short changing you and in fact puts some underrated stuff on there as well. So my suggestion is to get that. 2. Unleashed in the East. Like I said, I don't like "best of" albums and instead think if you want something like that, to buy a live album instead. If you want the best live performance out of the Priest I would suggest this album. Yes, it is early in their career but you get the idea of who they are at this point. 3. Metalogy. For this you either have to have a steady income or you are fairly comfortable that you like Priest but you don't want to shell out all the cash for the albums. This has 4 lengthy discs of music by Priest plus a DVD and this you for sure get everything you want.
However, at the end of the day my true recommendation is to acquire all of Priest's albums because they are the best metal band out there. Period. But, I understand financially this may be difficult since they do have a lot of albums. So, I honestly say stick with Metal Works to start. For albums to start, I would do Screaming for Vengeance, Sad Wings of Destiny, British Steel and Painkiller to get a good diversity of their sound. I would definitely recommend though to get Turbo and Ram it Down last because they are their only weak albums but they do have some classic stuff on each.
Bottom line though, get some Priest. If you love metal or good music in general, you can't go wrong. They are the best metal has to offer with only Sabbath and maybe Maiden coming close.
Too Short!!!.......2006-09-08
Judas Priest - The Best of Judas Priest: Living After Midnight.......2006-05-27
O.k. to be frank, I'm not a fan of live tracks on an album. To me, live performances are more visual and it's not the same for me to hear it but the live versions of "Breaking the Law" and Heading out to the Highway" make up for it all because both of these tracks are superb. The audio is great on all of the live tracks (no shorting out, no poorly faded vocals and an equal balance of instrumentation and vocals together).
And of course great hits like "Living After Midnight", "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and "Green Manilishi" make up for a decent starting point for Judas Priest. I will say that the better option (if you're looking for a compilation) is Metal Works because that goes from like 1977 to 1993. Or you could just do the right thing and get each and every Preist album. It may be spendy but the only 2 truly influential British bands were Iron Maiden and Judas Priest so it's worth it. And of course, all of their classic albums are just that classic. Not many bands' older music is relevent over time but I'd be lying if I said that Judas Priest's music didn't still stand the test of time after all these years. 3 stars for this CD, sorry but when you cut out so much not much more I can do for you.
BARGAIN BIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-08
A good friend had this one back in high school. It was a favorite to bring out when we partied out in the woods. When you are good and sloshed you will enjoy this mix of music. I personally was usually trying to hard to get into this chicks pants (no luck) to notice that the disc is LACKING very much. This is one of those bargain bin collections that you can find at the counter at CVS for $5.99. If you are looking for just some major hits this may be for you, but be aware that BREAKING THE LAW is a live version (not so great either) and a good chunk of other songs are also sub par live versions, (I have a REAL problem listening to live VICTIM OF CHANGES, because I like the studio v. so much.) Also, a lot of these songs are poppish 80's tracks. Green Mananlishi is cool, but TURBO LOVER is only cool when you are hammered, and singing it to some chick who is PAINFULLY uninterested in you. I would skip this bit and find a better hits package (2 disc METAL WORKS is good), I'm sure there are better bargain bin packs... or why don't you just buy either BRITISH STEEL (1980), SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1977) or STAINED CLASS (1978) these are all very complete albums stocked with killer tunes.
Missing WAY too much.......2005-12-04
1. Beyond the Realms of Death
2. Exciter
3. Stained Class
4. The Ripper
5. Dreamer Deceiver
6. Island of Domination
7. Sinner
8. Hell Bent for Leather
9. United
10. Metal Gods
11. Rapid Fire
12. Screaming for Vengeance
13. Painkiller
14. A Touch of Evil
15. Night Crawler
16. Between the Hammer and the Anvil
17. Hell Patrol
18. All Guns Blazing
19. One Shot at Glory
20. Rocka Rolla
"Metal Meltdown" is a good song, but I don't see why they picked it instead of "Painkiller" or "A Touch of Evil".

Album Description
Compiled from two back-to-back shows in Union, New Jersey, this historic live recording captures three CDs' worth of eclectic performances by the stripped-down quartet configuration of the JGB. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter takes vocals on his compositions "Promontory Rider" and "Tiger Rose." Packed with key originals and plenty of covers, it's an essential snapshot of Jerry at his peak. One of rock's true icons, Grateful Dead lead guitarist, vocalist, and goodwill ambassador Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of folk, bluegrass, roots-rock, and R&B-influenced solo projects throughout his career. Recorded both solo and with the Jerry Garcia Band, his albums include a slew of classic covers and many songs that became an integral part of the Grateful Dead's live set.

Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19
One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22
A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13
Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.
With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.
Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28
Pure Joy.......2003-12-07
I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.
The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.
Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.
This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

In an interesting partnering in elegance, Marcus Roberts continues his intellectual exploration of the piano trio in Cole After Midnight--a collection of arrangements honoring the music of Nat "King" Cole and Cole Porter. Roberts is a glimmer of hope amidst the current deluge of artists paying tribute to Nat "King" Cole, having built a career on clever, modern interpretations of conservative standards. However, he handles this tribute with a bit too much reverence. The pianist has the extraordinary ability to cohesively cite the whole of jazz history within a single composition, but his scholarly appreciation fails to reference the brightness of Mr. Cole's trio work. Roberts has recorded Gershwin's "Embraceable You" before (on 1992's If I Could Be with You)--a sweet, deceptive interpretation far more successful than what he's offering here. Despite the witty hand-drum treatment of "Mona Lisa" and the wonderful bass exchange of Roland Guerin and Thaddeus Expose on "Paper Moon," this album doesn't start to breathe until Roberts's own energetic original, "Cole After Midnight." Once free of honoring the master of piano trios, this group sets off on a number of smartly arranged Cole Porter tunes. The sultriness of "I Concentrate on You" sidles smoothly into the funky "What Is This Thing Called Love," which showcases the sharpness of drummer Jason Marsalis. Roland Guerin hands over a rare delicacy of a slap bass solo on "It's DeLovely." Roberts takes it alone on "You're the Top," playing with a postmodern meld of a Morton-on-Monk style that is all his own. While not the best showcase of Roberts's talent and insight, this album contains many satisfying moments. --Susan LewandowskiCustomer Reviews:
Love those jazz standards!.......2005-05-02
Well Planned.......2001-10-09
The liner notes were among the best I have seen, as Roberts lays out his project, goals, and tactics on every song. Very informative.
He also seems committed to letting the trio flex its muscles, so that we get a lot of variety in drumming styles, a lot of work for the bass, including duets and interesting solos.
There is also care taken to blend the music, with interesting bookend versions of "Answer Me, My Love," some great interludes, and the very good original bridge "Cole After Midnight."
Structurally, this is a very sound album, leaving only personal taste to judge between a 3-star and 5-star effort. I come down in the middle.
"latin to jazz...and back again".......2001-09-03
There is a lot of Ella on many of the tracks...being one of my favorites, think this might be the case with our pianist...Marcus backup is truly terrific ~ Roland Guerin (bass), Thaddeus Expose' (bass), Jason Marsalis (drums), Leon Anderson (drums), listen as this group mix the perfect ingredients for a Jazz trip down the avenue known as "Cole!"
