Excellent recording. L. Subramaniam at his best........1999-02-11

Stellar performance by the master. All his innovations and techniques are highlighted. Unique to this recording is the use of morsing as accompaniment. Sound quality is perfect except for the weak sound of the mridangam. Otherwise, a must have for any music lover's library.

Humdrum Presentation from Peter Pannke.......2001-02-19

The Mallik Family has better recordings to their name, and so has their grand old man, Ram Chatur. This is not exactly a fantastic live performance and the production doesn't help it any ... fade out the alap and fade in the dhrupad. One charming moment has young Abhay Narayan Mallik demonstrating the superiority of dhrupad singing to sitar playing: how the sitar players base their whole style on dhrupad ang but only manage to emulate 50% of the nomtom section - the straight notes but not the gamaka. This he illustrates very richly with vocal sitar imitations and his own brand of gamaka, which I will not comment upon further except say it's not udhak. :) Anyway, there are two good Dhmaras, in ragas Sindura and Paraj. I don't quite like the main item, dhrupad in raga Vinod, probably because there's a sarangi playing along all the time and I prefer my dhrupad clean (at least in the alap; the dhrupad itself works all right). Even worse, the sarangi is not loud enough in the mix - it should at least be clearly audible! (PS: have you heard about any of these ragas before ...? Sindura, Vinod, Paraj? Whatever happened to good old Todi, Malkauns, Bhatiyar? ;)

Inspiring!.......2002-01-10

To appreciate the beauty of this album one must think outside the box. This is not a commercial or mainstream album intended to break record sales, but in that its beauty rests. To say that Subramanian is an extremely talented musician will be an understatement. The man is a genius! In addition to the incredible technique he possesses , Subramanian goes deeper and very subtly conveys incredible feeling through his music. The masterfully played ragas at the same time trasnport you to remote, mystical places as well as invite you to go deep within yourself. Its a jewel!

Monotonous.......2000-11-21

L Subramanian's new raga-ShreePriya, is very close to Charukesi. The violinist has played the same piece over and over again, and the alapanai gets extremely boring 5-6 minutes after it starts. I must point out, however, that the recording quality is brilliant.
