On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28
My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.
This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.
"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.
It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.
great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27
for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.
favorite.......2007-01-10
This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.
Disappointing.......2006-06-01
I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.
Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29
I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Wonderful sample of maritime songs and chanteys.......2007-01-11
You'll want to run off and join a whaler or be thankful you're on dry land after listening to this album. Good mix of humorous and poignant music about life at sea.
water-soaked tunes.......2004-05-31
In a very happy move Smithsonian Folkways has taken to plumbing Folkways' deep catalog for a series of "Classic" anthologies of American roots music. The previous five are variously focused on Southern styles: blues, bluegrass, and mountain music. In the sixth of the series, SF turns to a non-Southern genre which has passed into neglect in recent years: songs of salt- and freshwater sailors. These are not field recordings, but the work largely of revival singers, who include such familiar names as Dave Van Ronk, Paul Clayton, and Lead Belly, along with others not so well known. They are taken from albums released between 1951 and 1997.
This is, as one would expect, a satisfying collection, not just for the performances but for the usual well-informed annotations and documentation. This grizzled folk fan learned a few things I didn't know, such as that "Run, Come See Jerusalem" -- once a folk-scare standard, done nicely here by the X-Seamen's Institute -- was written in 1929 by Blind Blake. No, not that Blind Blake, the bluesman/songster from Florida whose first name was Arthur, but the Bahamian singer Blind Blake, born Blake Higgs. I also learned that "Hilo" in the song "Johnny's Gone to Hilo" (here "Tommy's Gone to Hilo") is not in Hawaii, but in Peru (the port city of Ilo).
A small number of performances don't move me much. Tom Wisner's original, all-too-well-intentioned "Chesapeake Born" strikes me as purely cornball in that distinctively gooey Pete Seeger sort of way. Alan Mills and the Shanty Men perform in what sounds, at least to my ear, in so stilted, theatrical a fashion as to remind the listener why sea shanteys are so often parodied and ridiculed. (Admittedly, they're here for all of :36, in a mercifully brief "Paddy Doyle's Boots.") Done right, shanteys are wonderfully affecting, and most of the singers here do them proud. There are also a few ocean-going ballads, the standards "Greenland Whale Fisheries," "The Sloop John B," "Lord Franklin," and "The Handsome Cabin Boy," whose subjects range from the wryly comic to the heartbreakingly tragic.
If you already love this sort of thing, you'll want this album. And if you're looking for one representative anthology of maritime folk music to fill a hole in your collection, this one will do just fine.

On Par w/ Dimemberment Plan........2006-10-21
This is by far the best of Maritime's efforts. I was a huge fan of The Dismemberment Plan and a fan of early Promise Ring. Like a lot of other folks, I was luke warm about the output from the former members of Dismemberment Plan. This luke warmness applies to Maritime's first album, Glass Floor, a truely average and uninspired album. Aside from Travistan, by ex-Dismemberment Plan's Travis Morrison, released way back in '04, We The Vehicles is finaly delivering the payoff I was hoping for lo those many years ago when The Dismemberment Plan dismembered. This album ranks as one of the years best. Also see them live. The show is passionate and tight.
we, the vehicles.......2006-09-20
this album soothes and rocks you at the same time. i heard tidbits of them online, and went to see them live recently, confident that former promise ring members could put on quite the show. and i'll be honest, it was the best show i've been to in a long time. i was impressed. their sound is full, but also detailed and calm. so i bought this album, and was blown away again despite my reservations. it's less energetic than their live performance, but it works very well. it's almost croon-ish. "tearing up the oxygen" is my favorite track on the album. there are a few others that stand out to me as being elite. other than that, just the instrumentation alone makes the album a joy to listen to. i give it five stars because i can't go a day without putting it in (at least for a couple songs) since i purchased it. also SEE THEM LIVE any chance you get!!
delightful.......2006-08-04
from start to finish maritime's we the vehicles keeps me singing. it is honestly an amazing album.
simple and clean.......2006-07-18
This is a great album for the people who are beginning to feel lost in the sea of strings, keyboards, and fuzzy guitars of todays indie scene. It's a simple and clean effort remniscent of the good old days of midwestern indie rock.
Good job, much better than I expected!

A TIMELESS CLASSIC!.......2005-06-01
Landlubber or sailor, this one will have you up on your feet and singing along! "Away You Santy" has to be the benchmark recording of sea shanties and sea songs! This, the trio's first CD, contains honest, straight-forward, non-pretentious, accoustic renditions of sea songs, shanties, and tunes. It is an enthusiastic and lively collection performed with vocals, squeezebox, banjo, guitar, and pennywhistle, creating an authentic maritime sound that one can easily imagine hearing on board a creaky old wooden ship. I've had a copy since it was first released on cassette back in 1982 before it was remastered and released by Delta/LaserLight) and have never grown tired of it - I highly recommend this out-of-print and rare musical gem!
If you like Dylan & Roger McGuinn..........2002-12-22
I would have given this CD 5 stars, except 1) I'm not a folk music guru; and 2) I felt that the audio quality was slightly lacking. Elaborating on the first aspect, I found "Away, You Santy!" beautiful having considerable appreciation for the folkish music of Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Grateful Dead, James Taylor and other 60's artists. Many of the tracks were recorded without instrumental accompaniment, but this adds to, rather than subtracts from, those performances. Don't be put off by my comment about the audio; this was from the perspective of someone who likes some spatial effects in recordings. If your audio system can add some reverb, and you want it, you can add the spatial dimensions. If you prefer the unenhanced sound as on the CD, you won't have to hear the spatiality the engineers could have added. This CD, esthetically, is superb.
Pretty good shanty renditions.......1998-07-22
A good album to have if you're a serious shanty collector. Outstanding value at this price.
An outstanding treatment. O'Brian fans will love it........1998-06-28
The album is a wonderfully lively treatment of classic sea chanties-- no stodginess turning cheerful songs into monotone dirges on this CD. The light and skillful accompaniment is perfect for the hearty New England voices of Wickford Express, and the selections cover a wide range of styles. Especially appealing to me were the renditions of Spanish Ladies (for American sailors!), the medley of hornpipes, and the treatments of O'Carolan's 'Si Bheg Si Mhor' and 'Lord Inchiquin', which are performed with both style and enthusiasm. In addition to those standards, the CD includes some true 'chanties', sung with obvious appreciation for the wit inherent in the lyrics. All in all, an outstanding recording that will turn your car into a tall ship, and your commute into a voyage to cross the Line.

A very good indie pop debut from ex-Promise Ring members - fans of the band and genre should like it a lot - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-05
Maritime is essentially made up of band members from the former emo band The Promise Ring. It's a little funny hearing such cheerful indie pop from a group of guys who were once heavily into sadness and, well, "emo". "Glass Floor" is not a classic, but it has a bunch of good indie pop songs which makes it a very satisfying purchase ("Someone Has To Die" and "Window Is The Door, The" are good examples). The first three tracks are arguably the best ones out of the bunch. Unfortunately the album suffers from a few things that hurt its rating. The rest of the songs aren't BAD, but compared to the first three they aren't as wonderful. The singer is pretty good for the band's style, but it *might* turn a couple people off. The lyrics are pretty good and even catchy and memorable for several songs (again, the first three. They aren't necessarily that deep, though). The musicianship is decent but not something to wholeheartedly praise. What stops it from earning 5 stars are two things - the singer's voice and that none of the songs are "great" (they're mostly just good). There's just something about it that doesn't "awe" me like the other 5 star albums I've rated have (though the first three are so very close). Overall, however, The Promise Ring and indie pop fans should really like this album, though I would argue not *greatly*. Recommended.
Highlights include:
"Window Is The Door, The"
"Sleep Around"
"Someone Has To Die"
"King Of Doves"
"We've Got To Get Out"
"Night Like This, A" (kind of)
"Adios"
"If All My Days Go By"
"Lights"
"Human Beings" (sort of)
Poppy and Catchy Again!!.......2005-06-29
Maritime's debut is filled with TPR-ish songs with the same singer/guitarist and drummer from the TPR(who penned the songs) and the bassist from the Dismemberment Plan(great band also) and studio musicians, but I bet you already knew that. It's mellow like Wood/Water and has a lot a mellotron, piano, organ, and strings/horns. GF is also produced by the same guy who produced TPR's third album, this man has produced and recorded lots of stuff...J. Robbins. The production really makes this sound like a cross between Wood/Water and Very Emergency...you can like that or not. I personally think that's a good thing, because I liked both of those.
"The Window is a Door" really dragged me into the album personally and I loved it(although I did read the lyrics the first time thrrough). It's an acoustic that last about four minutes and it's really just dare I say pretty.
The other songs good tunes are:the catchy as all heck "Someone Has to Die", "King of Doves", "We've Got to Get Out", "James", "Souvenirs", "Adios", "I'm Not Afriad", and "A Night Like This"...The rest are OK but don't compare to these.
different for everyone.......2005-02-08
After reading a lot of these reviews it appears everyone has a different opinion on this. My advice is, if you are interested, get it. If you like it, great. If you don't then you can put it on your shelf to try again later or sell it to a used CD store. When you listen to this album keep a COMPLETELY open mind. Forget everything about The Promise Ring, Vermont and all related bands.
If you can't do that, I must say I hear a lot of similarities to A.Promise Ring - Wood/Water B.Simon & Garfunkel C.John Mayer and some similarity to D.Promise Ring - Horse Latitudes. A in the sense that it is Davey here and he still has a similar form of song writing after TPR's last album, B in vocals and in a lot of the acoustic songs, C in a lot of melodies, and D because it still has that good ol' clean cut pop feel to it.
My opinion on how this album sounds is excellent. This seems like one of those CDs I'm gonna refer back to and remember when I'm older.
Listen to it, if you don't agree with me then don't lose sleep over it.
Only for some TPR fans.......2004-10-16
I have to level with you.
I think all of The Promise Ring's records were brilliant. However, I especially loved "Very Emergency!" and "Electric Pink". To me, that was TPR playing in a style that didn't require over-stretching. Laid-back pop that made sense and sounded a hell of a lot better than anything on the mainstream radio.
That said, Maritime is certainly in that vein. It's not intellectually challenging, but it is up-tempo and extremely catchy. Davey's distinct voice blends well with horns strategically placed.
If you want modern emo, watch TRL. If you want well-crafted pop, buy "Glass Floor".
A Way To Save It.......2004-08-28
Maritime's Glass Floor is not TERRIBLE; it's just perfectly mediocre, which to many music purists equals...TERRIBLE. Those fans of the Promise Ring's early material who checked out after the cutesy noise of Very Emergency and likely weren't recaptured by the somber droning of Wood/Water surely will not have any reason to celebrate this latest incarnation. And even the diehards who stuck around through the last two Promise Ring releases have no choice but to admit that by the time track 6 comes on, this album is something of a disappointment. The problem with Maritime is that they've found that musical no-man's-land between the thrilling unguarded energy of the early TPR songs and the subsequent raw, lo-fi, heart-on-sleeve balladry of Vermont. Here, they've appeared to merge the two into something unholy in it's preciousness. That being said, there is a way to save this emo Teddy Ruxpin from total cd-changer banishment (in four easy steps):
1. Buy the album.
2. Save the files to your computer.
3. Remove tracks 08, 10, and 13 ("Souvenirs", "I'm Not Afraid", and "Human Beings").
4. Rearrange the remaining songs into the following order:
i. "james"
ii. "someone has to die"
iii. "if all my days go by"
iv. "king of doves"
v. "a night like this"
vi. "adios"
vii. "we've got to get out"
viii. "sleep around"
ix. "lights"
x. "the window is the door"
By trimming the excess and forging a more logical track order, Glass Floor can be saved. Follow these instructions, and the album is not only tolerable, it's ultimately quite likable. Seriously.

Customer Reviews:
Mr. Chris at his best!.......2000-10-12
Even if i didnt used to take flute lessons from Mr. Chris, i would still be raving about this CD. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Norman's roots are at the forefront of this recording with several of the tracks representing the beauty and uniqueness of Cape Breton. Also very evident on this CD is the beauty of the French Quebecois music with Billy McComiskey contributing some of the best accordian playing i have ever heard. The standout track is Valse Frontenac, which although i am still young, is the song that i am convinced i will use for the first dance at my wedding. It is the most moving piece of music i have ever heard in my life, and it is impossible not to fall in love with it. The accordian playing is magnificent, and the warmth of the wooden flute only adds to the experience. the Beauty of the North set also deserves kudos for best representing celtic music with a wonderful blend of french, scottish, and cape breton music. i cannot say enough good things about this album, so buy this album, and help pay respect to one of the greatest flute players of our time.
Music To My Ears.......2000-07-25
My Dad heard track # 12, "Valse Fontenac" on the radio and thought it was the most beautiful piece of music he had ever heard. As a result, he puchased "Beauty of the North" for me to enjoy. There only are five instrumentalists playing and there music results in beautiful, melodic and sometimes even haunting music. It is mostly traditional music collected from different parts of the world. The Chicoutimi Set is one of the best sets off The Beauty of the North as it is both cheerful and bouncey, and also great to listen to. Altogether Beauty of the North is a brilliant collection of traditional favourites and is a must buy CD.

One of the best albums of the 2000's.......2006-03-10
The first time I listened to this I only liked a few of the songs. But I liked those few so much I kept playing it.
But the third of fourth listen I was totally hooked on the whole thing. I haven't take it out my CD player since. Everyone I've turned on to this is jumping on the Maritime bandwagon. Love the clean but very aggressive guitar playing that accents every song perfectly. Just about every song is top notch but the true standouts for me are People The Vehicles, Young Alumni, Call Me Home, Twins, and No One Will Remember You Tonight. I listen to mostly singer/songwriter stuff but along
with The Notwist's Neon Golden and My Morning Jacket's Z this is the best album by a band I've heard in least few years. Get it - you'll love it.
It's good, but............2006-02-09
This album would be fantastic if only they'd gone with J. Robbins production again. Overall the songs are better than the last album but I can't help thinking a lot of them sound kind of flat. (Where's the bass in Parade Of... and in several of the other songs?). It's not too bad and doesn't spoil the album completely, but I can't help thinking how much better it would sound with the really good production it deserves. A missed opportunity, I think. Sorry.
amazing.......2005-11-06
This album blows my mind. Glass Floor had its good moments, but did not seem like what these guys were capable of putting out. This album makes up for the few flaws on Glass Floor. This album sounds nothing like the last one, much more upbeat and rockin. The bass lines will make anyone drool with pleasure, and his guitar and vocals are on top.
Highlights: People, The Vehicles, Calm, Young Alumni, Protein And Poison, and Call Me Home
Sadly this has not been released in the United States, so you have to get the import. IT's worth the extra money for the bonus tracks, which should be on the international album but are not for some stupid reason unclear to me.

Customer Reviews:
A SEA MUSIC CLASSIC!.......2005-06-01
This second recording by Wickford Express, though more arranged and polished than their first (Away You Santy), remains true to maritime tradition in both content and atmosphere! Featured are vocals, fiddle, concertina, banjo, squeezebox, guitar, mandolin, pennywhistle, spoons and bones. The original trio is joined by several highly-respected and seasoned traditional players and the result is a seamless, solidly accoustic blend of instruments and robust vocals that are, by turn, beautiful and boisterous. This CD firmly established the band's status as the one of the nation's leading performers of sea music and it is easy to see why this recording gained accolades from sea music fans worldwide, and brought the group to Washington, DC where they performed at the Kennedy Center as recipients of a prestigious Excellence in Music Award. The group's knowledge, research, talents, and love of the tradition is clearly and enthusiastically represented here...another sea music classic for Wickford Express! Out-of-print and scarce, but well worth the search - highly recommended!
