.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

This is the 37th and final volume of the Hyperion Schubert Edition. In his (as always) informative and passionately personal program notes, Graham Johnson, pianist and guiding spirit of the series, bids this monumental undertaking a touching farewell. The 20 songs on this disc, including the cycle Schwanengesang, are among Schubert's last and greatest; most of them are dark, somber, haunted, and--especially in these deeply felt performances--utterly heartbreaking. In Johnson's version of the Three Tenors, the songs' original keys are retained while their character is enhanced by the singers' vocal timbre and style. Schade's bright voice matches the cheerful, optimistic songs outside the cycle, and he blends well with the horn in "Auf dem Strom." In the Heine songs, Rolfe Johnson's approach is dramatic, declamatory, almost operatic. Ainsley has the darkest voice and gives the Rellstab songs great simplicity and inwardness; his balance between poetic and musical prosody, and between a lighthearted text and its dark musical undercurrent, is perfect. One song, placed so as to separate the two parts of Schwanengesang, is shared by all three singers. Their diction is equally good, though two are English and one is German; the impression of a vocal competition is avoided through the diversity of their voices and styles. Johnson's playing continues to be pure magic. His sound is incredibly beautiful--he brings out hidden melodies, imitates a guitar and a galloping horse, and has an incomparable sensitivity to the music and his partners. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Miraculous Singing from John Mark Ainsley.......2005-11-05

This is a marvelous album of songs from Schubert's final year. The centerpiece is the ersatz song cycle Schwanengesang, introduced by a judicious and winning selection of other songs. The program order and the performances are such that the album proceeds at a self-assured pace, bespeaking commitment, well-considered interpretations, and musical accomplishment.

The introductory set is taken by Michael Schade, who brings to them a light and communicative style. These songs have a bit of the heartiness or bluster of Beethoven's songs, and the song with piano and horn accompniment that opens the album, "Auf dem Strom," is reminiscent of Beethoven's proto-song-cycle "An die ferne Geliebte," right up to the impetuous closing. This leads into an understated postlude that transports the piece from mimicry to hommage and is rendered touchingly by singer and hornist.

The songs of Schwanengesang are divided into settings of Rellstab and settings of Heine. Although alienation is a common theme threading through the poems, the poets' styles are quite divergent and so is their musical incarnation by Schubert. The garrulous Rellstab poems elicit a varied musical response from Schubert's pen, resulting in a satisfying patchwork. The sardonic, sparser Heine poems bring Schubert to an exploration of declamatory composition, minimalistic yet expressionistic, that remains strikingly modern 175 years later.

Graham Johnson gives the two halves of the cycle to two different tenors -- the Heine to the veteran Anthony Rolfe Johnson, the Rellstab to the younger but established John Mark Ainsley. Between the two halves is an expansive interlude, "Glaube, Hoffnung und Liebe" shared by all three tenors. It serves as a pleasant pallet-cleanser before the harrowing Heine settings.

Ainsley's interpretations of the Rellstab settings are miraculous. His delivery is thoroughly connected with the text, and yet so inhabited by the music, that the age-old tension between "Ton und Wort" dissolves. His virtues are too extraordinary even to catalog without risk of trivializing. He has complete command of the music, but only by putting himself completely in its service. His admirable technique gives him powers of dynamic nuance that he deploys always to telling emotional effect, never cheaply. His voice has a unique combination of qualities -- big and somewhat dark, but supple rather than heavy, and never squally. He never places his big voice between himself and the listener -- a bridge, not an imposing edifice. Three of his songs -- "Liebesbotschaft," "Frühlingsehnsucht," and "Abschied" are wordy effusions that sound like pattersongs even in the mouths of native speakers. He handles the verbosity with elegance, with ample room to sing and to illuminate, to lead us on the song's journey rather than just get to the finish line in one tongue-tied piece. His attention to text allows us to pick up on the hint of melancholy in the final stanza of "Abshied," which peaks at us beneath the brim of the leave-taker's jaunty hat. Some of the Rellstab songs are as intense as the Heine songs -- "Aufenthalt" and "In der Ferne" with its moody harmonic shifts -- and Ainsley is utterly convincing. He's no lightweight, despite a vocal style that favors delicacy and emotional openness over grandiosity.

Rolfe Johnson is authoritative in the Heine settings and in the valedictory "Taubenpost," Schubert's last song. His mature and robust voice is an asset in the raging strophes of "Der Atlas." He brings texture to the sparse lines of the next four songs -- each of these songs is well-known and perfectly fitted to the text, but at the same time they are incomplete and unsatisfying on their own. These poems are relentless, indulging in bitter irony, in despair leading to revelations of even deeper despair. The poems all seem a premonition of "Der Doppelgänger" and the same is true of the music. One hears in these four songs a restless Schubert -- refusing to resolve his harmonies, edging along quasi-experimentally in a declamatory style that reaches its culmination in "Der Doppelgänger," one of the most terrifying songs ever written. Rolfe Johnson's performance of this masterpiece is straightforward, eschewing the sarcastic tone that some singers inflict on the last stanza.

Throughout, in fact, all singers are remarkably free of vocal posturing. I had many moments of hearing these songs afresh, rescued from decades of overblown climaxes, sentiment-milking, and vocal browbeating. This is a superb accomplishment. They are bringing you music, vividly personal music, not making a whistle-stop tour of classics that have become typecast in the collective imagination. The recording's acoustic is utterly pristine -- not an echo or reverberation or boxy effect or imbalance to muddy the music.

Despite the consistency of achievement on this album, Ainsley's performances deserve to be singled out: without disregarding the others, I wish that Graham Johnson had given Ainsley the entire album, he was more than equal to the task. Rolfe Johnson himself had an album to himself earlier in the series (volume 6, with a nocturnal theme). The acoustic that I have praised serves Ainsley and his immediate approach especially well. Ainsley shines on this album and could have brought the Hyperion Schubert Edition, successful as it was, to an even more radiant close.

4 out of 5 stars Not Quite Superlative Schubert.......2004-11-19

This is Graham Johnson's usual high-quality, intelligent music-making, with a banquet of programme notes. It takes longer to read them than it does to listen to the album. I enjoyed the performances of Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Michael Schade on this recording, but alas, they are overshadowed John Mark Ainsley, as they would be by anyone who can make the hackneyed Standchen sound fresh and new. Would that he had recorded the entire album!

4 out of 5 stars Schubert - the Final Year.......2000-10-30

In his fascinating notes, Graham Johnson remarks at one point, "...who can buck the market?" How true - but what a pity that he had to follow such a market trend as having "Three Tenors" for this recording, which is a disappointing one in some ways. He got it absolutely right in his choices of Ian Bostridge for "Schöne Müllerin" and Matthias Goerne for "Winterreise," but on the present disc only John Mark Ainsley really stands comparison with the best - Michael Schade has a pleasant voice of no special distinction, but of course he sure is one hunky guy - that market again - and Anthony Rolfe Johnson, though a wonderful communicator in recital and once a glorious singer on disc, sounds simply past it, and is not helped by his fluty pronunciation in which any word with an "e" in it seems to have an extra one or two added.

Johnson explains that he wanted "Schwanengesang" to be performed by two different singers yet of the same tessitura, so that there would be no outright dislocation. Fair enough, but, given that the "cycle" has to be split up, I think I would have preferred a totally different voice for the Heine settings, a singer with a richer timbre, more dramatic power and certainly better German than that of ARJ - Goerne springs to mind, although one supposes that his contract with Decca precludes such excursions.

The chief pleasures on this recording are supplied by Ainsley, yet even he sounds, at times, on the subdued side. Is "Abschied" really such a wistful, restrained song as he and Johnson perform it? It is very beautifully sung indeed, rather on the slow side but with admirable diction and attention to words - this is a tenor who really loves the sound of his own voice, as well he might, and he also seems to savour every syllable - "Ade, liebe Sonne so gehst du zur Ruh' is exquisitely done, as is the melancholy ending.

"Liebesbotschaft" also has real beauty and poise - "Wiege das Liebchen in Schlummer ein" is sung with melting tenderness, and the testing "Bächlein, erquicke mit kühlender Flut" is so idiomatically enunciated that it sounds as though it is being sung by a native German speaker for whom the poems have real meaning.

He is at his best in "Ständchen" where his lovely timbre, fluid legato and perfect German are again fully in evidence. He is conscious of all who have gone before him with this well-worn song, but as with his "An Silvia" on volume 26, both he and Johnson perform it as though they are the first to do so. Johnson remarks that at the phrase "Liebchen, komm' zu mir!" - "...we can almost feel the singer's tenderness," and Ainsley's sensitive and sensuous performance justifies such a remark. The final lines, with their passionate pleading, are perfectly judged, sung with real fervour yet without going into recitalese - a fine example of Ainsley's art, which so often consists in wringing our hearts without wringing his hands.

As for the Heine settings and "Die Taubenpost," I found them mostly disappointing, occasionally irritating. I felt that a certain sense of power in reserve was lacking, and that only in "Das Fischermädchen" did ARJ show what he really could do. "Taubenpost" is a sad disappointment; sung mostly on one level, he makes little of such moments as the heart-rending last line, and his approximately crooned German is nothing short of annoying - as well as hardly even touching on the grace notes before "Heimlich hinein." Surely this supreme example of Schubert's music needs deeply fervent, intensely beautiful singing (in convincing German) rather than just delicate, pinkie-crooking recitalling?

Modified rapture, then, for this final instalment in the series. To me, it cannot stand with the supreme achievements of volumes 20, 24, 25 (Schöne Müllerin), 26, 27, 28 and 30 (Winterreise) but then in such a huge undertaking, total uniformity of excellence is too much to ask. Individual taste will always supervene in such matters; I cannot imagine finer performances than, say, Christine Schäfer's of "Der Musensohn" (28) or Matthias Goerne's of "Frühlingstraum" (30) or "Fulle der Liebe," (27) but there are many other beloved Schubert songs where I would not go to the Hyperion edition - "Vor Meiner Wiege" and "Fühlingsglaube" spring to mind - ARJ and Marjana Lipovesek being no match for Fischer-Dieskau here.

No music lover should be without the songs on this disc, especially since it includes the rarely heard but wonderful "Auf Dem Strom," (superb horn playing by David Pyatt) and I would buy it for that and for the beautiful singing of the Rellstab songs, not to mention Johnson's indispensable notes. For the Heine settings and "Taubenpost," it's back to Fischer-Dieskau for me, at least until Matthias Goerne gets around to recording them.

5 out of 5 stars Schafer does Schubert..........2007-03-12

.
Christing Schafer is the finest--and certainly the most interesting--soprano now working: her vibrato-less purity of tone seems oh-so-effortless. Her 5+min line of Der Fluss (D.693) [from Schubert's "Abendrote" cycle of Schlegel songs] is worth the price of admission alone.

Unfortunately, Irwin Gage is not my first recommendation for accompanist.

Look for #27 of the Hyperion Schubert Edition...

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.

Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.

Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).

For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

5 out of 5 stars LAS ROSAS DEL JARDIN.......2000-05-03

      Album Description

The Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all Schubert's Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. The second volume devoted to settings of poems by Schubert's Austrian contemporaries includes some of his most dramatic songs, some unknown gems from the early, middle and late years, and as a curiosity, the only melodrama Schubert wrote.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars German Rock.......2005-12-20

First of all: This Band is a very talented german hardrockband.
"Brings" stands vor the name of Singer and Guitarist Peter Brings and Bassist Stephan Brings. The two brothers and Lead-Guitar Player Harry Alfter founded the Band in Cologne 1991.
The LP "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung"(1995) is the Band's 4th Album. The title means "trust love hope" and stands for a great Hardrock/Grunge Album that might be inspired by the american Bands "Guns N' Roses" "Nirvana" and "Bon Jovi". German Lyrics but the Singer's voice is absolutely powerful and emotional a kind of German Chris Cornell (Audioslave/Soundgarden). The way Harry Alfter plays the Guitar reminds me of Slash (GNR/VElvet Revolver). "Glaube Liebe Hoffnung" is the first appeareance of the actual drummer Christian Bluem who's the son of a well known german politics.
      The Songs:
      Heimat (=Home) (5/5)
Heavy Track sounds a bit like "smells like teen spirit" but a little bit harder. The lyrics deal with been stuck with your hometown but the problem is that you love this town even if it destroys you.

Luftschloesser (sorry don't know the meaning) (4/5)
Tle Album's first Single is a melancholic ballad with powerful Guitars and good lyrics (losing your dreams...deals with the big german unemployment issue). The Songs problem: Peter's voice sounds a bit as if he doesn't take it seriuos sometimes but the refrain is catchy)

Fleisch und Blut (=Meat and Blood) (4/5)
Ballad that describes a person you really love. Soft "feel Good music".

      Angst (=Fear) (5/5)
One of the harder midtempo tracks. Groovy about the nightlife and illusions under the influence of drugs.

      Freiheit (=Freedom) (6/5)
Uptempo Song with heavy riffs. Good Rock music. The Song is about Tommy who was left alone by his family and starts to steals and only gets satisfied under the influence of hard drugs.
Nice/fast Guitar solos. Freiheit bis zum schluß... (Freedom until you die...)

Lass mich nicht allein (=don't leave me alone) (5/5)
Great Ballad with long guitar solos and emotional lyrics (a kind of "November Rain" with 3 doors down Lyrics).

      Mama (=mum) (4/5)
      Midtempo rock with sleazy guitars.

      Kuß (=Kiss) (4,5/5)
Love Song opera. Starts slow ans and quiet but keeps getting more poweful with a background chorous.

      Job (3/5)
Nothing special. A "Bon Jovi song" with the message: "don't care of money and live your life.."

      Traenen (=tears) (3,5/5)
Ballad with piano parts. About regretting some choises you've made. Schmalzy but a emotional Vocalist Peter Brings.

Schreien wie ein Kind (=screamin like a child) (4/5)
Nirvana Grunge music riffs and guitar muting. Being ignored by the ones you love and the plan to kill yourself.

      Dreck (=Mudd) (5/5)
A uptempotrack that's really goog to hear. Nice Guitarriffs, catchy lyrics. Heavy classic rock or punk.

Brief nach hause (=letter home) (5/5)
another great Ballad. Melancholic Singer and a virtous Harry Alfter (guitar). Tell my why it hurts to see your eyes...

      Scheiß drauf (=F**k it)
Dirty oldschool punk. fight for your rights! Great Bass played by Stephan Brings.

      Hidden Track
2 minutes of great bluesy guitar jammin.

All in all a great Album by a great german band. Of course you won't know them but if you like alternative rockmusic...get this!
