The best of Dalida's music from the fifties and sixties.......2002-09-01

When I decided to explore music sung in foreign languages, it didn't take me long to discover that Dalida is one of the most important French singers in history. Her recording carrer began in 1956 and ended with her suicide in 1987. She recorded for just two record labels, Barclay and Orlando, the switch occurring in 1970. This double-CD contains 42 of her finest recordings for Barclay.

There are original songs here, but also translations of songs from elsewhere, including Italy, Britain and America. These are particularly interesting. O sole mio is a song of European origin (French or Italian?) which was later translated into English and was mas made famous by Elvis with the title It's now or never.

In the fifties, Dalida recorded French versions of several of Petula's British hits. Two of them, Gondolier (With All My Heart) and Te Pars (Alone) are included here. They proved to be very significant, because Petula was inspired by these covers to switch her base from Britain to France, where she was extremely successful and has lived ever since. Dalida didn't cover any more Petula songs, but they both recorded Garde-Moi la Derniere Danse (Save the Last Dance for Me - Drifters) - Dalida's version is included here - and both had top five hits in France with the song.

Other great covers include T'Ai Reve (Dream Lover - Bobby Darin), Nuits d'Espagne (Spanish Harlem - Ben E King), Petit Gonzales (Speedy Gonzales - Pat Boone), Que Sont Devenues Les Fleurs (Where Have All the Flowers Gone - Pete Seeger), Grilles de Ma Maison (Green Green Grass of Home), Qui (Hurt - Timi Yuro) and Temps des Fleurs (Those Were the Days - Mary Hopkin).

You may also recognise Never on a Sunday - Dalida records it as Les enfants du Piree, but it's original (Italian?) title is Ta Pedia tou Pirea. Another instantly recognisable song is Itsy bitsy teeny weeny, which is not the finest song Dalida ever recorded, but she somehow makes it sound better than it really is.

Despite that song, I loved this double CD so much that I not only bought the Orlando double CD, but also the ten CD box covering her complete Barclay recordings. I wouldn't expect you to go that far, but if you want to hear some high quality French music, Dalida is for you.

The Quintessential DALIDA!!!.......2000-04-02

42 of Dalida's original recordings from 1956-1970 with her beautiful french renditions of such standards as "Save the last dance for me", "Amore Scusami" (also sung by Jerry Vale and Robert Goulet), and "Hurt" (sung by Elvis and Liz Torres). Also includes the original version of "Parlez-moi de lui" which was wonderfully updated and remixed on her "A MA MANIERE" CD. The CD cover is an attractive booklet containing photos of Dalida with celebrites such as Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, Julio Eglesias, The Platters and Yves Montand. Very nice collection.

Same remixes!! Same songs!.......2005-05-25

I was very disappointed in this because there is basically nothing new if you already have a couple of the last releases with remixes. Just the same remixes with a new cover. Why not take songs like "Amore scusami" or her version of "Hurt" {which was redone dance style in the 1970's by Liz Torres of "PHYLLIS" and "All in the family" fame } or the like to remix?
Any more repeat CD's of the same songs over and over and there will be no need to check them out anymore!

Indeed, a very good collection of Dalida songs. So many true gems on one CD. Aside from the beautiful "L'amour Et Moi" (mentioned below), and which I think isn't even the best work on this CD, this collection is rich with those highly personal and passionate songs that were this Diva's trademark. From the highly personal songs which no one else could have sung, and yet almost everybody can relate to (like the astounding "A Ma Maniere", and "J'm'appelle Amnesie"); to those most human declarations about life and the human experience: from the richness of being a woman at forty ("Une Femme A Quarante Ans"), to the ugly endings of beautiful loves stories ("Fini, La Comedie"), to songs about struggles in life ("Partir Ou Mourir"), lulls in life, lows ("Le Slow De Ma Vie"), near-halts, but it still all goes on nevertheless ("Et La Vie Continuera"). Add to that her gorgeous eulogy of a song to the Belgian singer Jaques Brel, "Il Pleut Sur Bruxelles", and the sweeping rhythm and fire of "La Feria", and you're certainly getting a more-than-a-good deal in one CD!

This is a very touchy CD. All songs are beautiful; L'amour et moi, Partir ou mourir, Une Femme a 40ans are quite extraordinary and Fabulous! What can I say...Bravo Dalida, This is a real Gem.

European influences throughout plus a beautiful surprise........1999-06-06

Not my favorite Dalida CD but the song "L'amour et moi" or "The Love Inside" from Barbra Steisands GUILTY is absolutely heart wrenching. At one point you feel the emotion pouring out of her voice. Couple other beautiful songs as well as a couple "dated".

'Forever' Dalida is also released as a 2 CD collection including more hits from the great singer. This is a satisfying Greatest Hits album covering songs from her early years, to the 1980's. A must for any fan, new or old.

Dalida is simply amazing. There's very little I can add to what the previous reviewers have written, except to say that even though several of the tracks are also on "The Queen" it's still worth it to buy this CD for the songs that aren't on "The Queen"
Dalida may be gone but she's still with us in these remixes & I'm sure that she's smiling down on us when we listen to her in any format.
The remix of "Look what they've done to my song" is breathtaking & "T'es fier de toi" is priceless!

A Cultural and Rythmic Journey Unmatched!.......2001-06-12

It's difficult to put in words how this album touches the soul and the mind. It is an endless cultural journey that blends French, Arabic, Spanish, and Italian cultures into a delicious quiche that educates one's mind, and moves one's soul with passion, and longing for more. It is music that takes you on a journey to places you never thought possible. Like a rollercoaster ride that you get on, and once finished, you take the ride again and again. If you have no rythym before you listen to this album, you surely will gain some or go out and acquire some after listening to it. This album is a testimony that Music (no matter what language it is in) is a Universal Language that touches the heart and soul. I sure that whoever listens to this album, will not be disappointed in it.

Le Reve Oriental was the CD that introduced me to Dalida. Now, I am an ardent fan. This superbly remixed CD of some of the most famous songs of her extensive multilinguistic repertoire showcases her voice, her dynamism and her exoticism. I hope that more people discover Dalida by listening to this production. This CD is also a wonderful introduction to the world beat music with North African influences (if you like Dalida, try Alabina, or Radio Tarifa). The songs have been made more contemporary with Eurodisco remixing and additional production; do not let this to deter you from buying it...Dalida die-hard purists may flinch at it, but the remixing work was done with great care and love and it NEVER sounds discordant. Songs range from the wildly energetic 144BPM's of "Quand s'arretent les violons" to the amazing fusion of Flamenco/Italian disco/Egyptian hamash of "Flamenco Oriental", sung in Italian, French and Egyptian!, to the elegance and languidity of that 60's European classic "Lady d'Arbanville", to the Marlene Dietrich hymn "Ils ont change ma chanson". If you end up liking Dalida, I suggest that you also try the "companion" piece to this CD, the more subdued and smoky "A ma maniere" in which many of the songs made famous by her are given subtle remixes: " Gigi L'Amoroso", "Les Nuits sans toi",as well as many French and European "chanteusse" staples like "La vie en rose", "Parlez moi de lui", "Dans tes bras", etc. In any case, you will thoroughly enjoy (re)discovering the talent of Dalida.

Sadly gone before her time, but not forgotten.

I agree with all three of the previous reviewers. First of, it REALLY is an ORIENTAL collection, just like the title says...Secondly, it is done with good taste and in the true spirit of 70's disko beat, which what Dalida was famous for(although, she was MUCH MUCH more than just a disko DIVA...but, you would have to buy another CD to know that). Thirdly, it is true that if you know Spanish and/or French, you'll get even more pleasure out of this collection. I HIGHLY recommend people to buy this CD and discover beauty of Dalida's voice, her Egyptian heritage, and European disco music. PEOPLE, who DISLIKE ARABIC influence in MUSIC or simply don't know much about it (and Eastern music, in general): THIS CD is a good STARTING POINT for OPENING UP YOUR MINDS... Oh, and, one more thing: "Lo T'amero" is JUST SO-O-O BEAUTIFUL!

My Favorite Remix Dance Album!........2006-06-03

Out of all the different compilations either of dance or just Dalida's original songs, this is the one you should get. If your into fast dancing techno music then this is for you. You don't have to speak another language to love this, because you'll be dancing to the music instead. However not all the songs on here are fast, like number 5, & 8, the first two tracks are not songs but intro's to the whole album, overall it's fun & Dalida fans will love it for a fact.

Also recommended: "L'an 2005" from Dalida.

On this cd many new arrangements have been made giving the listeners the impression, Dalida had resurrected from the dead in order to give a demonstration of the beauty of her voice to the living. Without distorting her voice, new rhythms have been added to freshen up the original recording to today's ears. This new remix technology is-without doubt-an audio improvement of the first order. Absolutely recommendable !

Dalida toujours!.......2000-06-30

This was my first Dalida CD and it definately won't be my last! Its a wonderful mood lifter, everytime I hear it I become so happy! Two of the best songs are "Generation Dalida" and "Mourir sur scène". If you are thinking about getting this CD, don't think! Just get it! :)

If you are a person who loves the music of Dalida, then you will love this CD. It is comprised of remixes of many of her most popular songs. A few of the songs have a disco/dance beat which should appeal to the young or young at heart. J'attendrai can be nostalgic for those who know the history of the song. If you can only buy one Dalida CD, I highly recommend that you buy this one.
