Congolese rumba, a mixture of imported Cuban dance traditions wedded to various home-grown flavors, is one of Africa's best-loved popular styles. It is sometimes known as soukous (from the French secouer, "to shake"), and has gone through many permutations--both electric and acoustic, from brisk-tempo, three-minute singles to extended, bi- or tri-partite Proustian epics--since things got seriously underway during the 1950s. That this music has remained a universal favorite for decades on end is partly because local radio stations had very powerful signals, broadcasting all the latest releases far and wide. But ubiquity aside, these guitar-driven tunes with their sugar-sweet vocals pack an irresistibly sexy rhythmic punch. The present two-disc compilation, brilliantly researched, assembled, and mastered from historic recordings and then annotated by Vincent Kenis, offers a couple of hours' worth of utterly delicious material from back when Loningisa was the happening label in pre-independence Leopoldville (now Kinshasa). A list of highlights would quickly get out of hand as there's not a single dud in the bunch! Short, brisk, and to the point, some of the tracks have a lot in common with modern Malagasy music. Obviously the sound is retro, both in terms of content and sonic quality. But very few albums could remotely match this set when it comes to communicating the sheer joy of being alive in the moment, making music. --Christina Roden

I don't know what industry people got together to make this possible but this is a breath fresh air.It seems to be getting wide distribution in the USA and actually selling copies to boot. This goes against conventional wisdom that seems to believe that the only thing the public wants is speedy soukous, much of which is beginning to sound all the same. Nothing old fashioned about great imaginative music and this is proof. Nearly 65 minutes and you will shake your hips and buttocks.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful rhythms.......2004-08-02

I just saw them live in Berkeley last night, and they were simply amazing to see playing together. The vocal harmonies, Congolese guitar rhythms, accompanying soulful sax, combined with the amazing stage presence of these all star legends made for a most memorable night. I have their Congo Life CD that is hard to stop playing, and last night at the concert I bought the Rumba Congo one, which is packed with intricate congo rhythms and vocal styles. If you're a lover of world music, you will love this CD!

Regardless of one's musical preferences, this is simply beautiful music. These old timers bring back pre-soukous rumba for the new millenium ... heavenly voices over that seductive guitar-driven Congo style. Never ceases to send shivers up the spine. The added advantages of modern recording technology is the pure clarity of sound one misses in the few 50's offerings available. Can't wait fot the follow-up. Hope these guys perform in Southern California sometime.

Authenticity is a tricky construct in pop music. In Rumba Argelina, guitarist and composer Fain Dueñas, wind player Vincent Molino, and vocalist Benjamin Escoriza, the core of the Spanish group Radio Tarifa, blend traditional North African music, flamenco, and a dash of rhythms from the New World, most notably Cuba, with a contemporary pop sensibility. The results sound surprisingly organic--even when some of the mixes take disorienting turns. "Oye China" suggests a son or guajira--until an accordion and a mysterious wind instrument (bansuri?) come in. When the song turns again, however, it evokes a vallenato. "Soledad" alludes to flamenco but also to Brian Eno. Then again, as Dueñas & Co. define it, this is border music, the music of an imaginary radio station in Tarifa, the southernmost point in Spain. What it suggests depends on your point of reference--but leave that for musicologists. Most important, Rumba Argelina is a delightful, rich, sensual experience, armchair traveling at its best. --Fernando Gonzalez

If I ever get invited to be on that NPR Harrisburg radio show "Desert Island" where you play selections of the 10 albums that you absolutely must have with you to continue your life in the deepest, happiest, most connected way possible (or something like that), this will be at the top of my list. Where it's been for the last 9 years, a refreshing fountain always ready when you need it. And you can dance to it.

5 out of 5 stars Music from the south of Spain!.......2005-02-03

Great music that combines the Gypsy, Moorish and Mediterranean influences with some Cuban rythm! If you are proud of your roots like me, you will enjoy the album and the other two that follow.

      5 out of 5 stars An Exotic Combination : Spanish & Arabic.......2002-04-25

Deep-rooted, authentic music you might expect to hear in some far off land ... The stringed instruments, wind-blow instruments, drums, percussion & vocals provide just the right blend of natural sounds. The raw, earthy male vocals remind one of haunting gypsy music - the liner notes provide a translation: lost love, yearning to be recognized and fulfilled. Passionate emotions, almost groaning from within, rumbling like a volcano ready to erupt, revealing feelings only Meditarranean male vocalists can produce.

"Rumba Argelina" the mysterious title of this CD unfolds like a bud which blooms in the spring: the rain showers come and go, the green leaves unfurl on the trees, the flowers bloom, the cycle of nature is complete. The music here is fresh, original, exotic and mysterious. If gypsy or Middle Eastern music appeals to you: you will love this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

      5 out of 5 stars Bridging cultures.......2001-10-27

For some strange reason I began listening to this disc even more after the 9/11 events and it has been a little unsettling. The looks one gets from listening to what some mistakeningly may think is Arabic music is odd. The music itself is hauntingly beautiful has a result. There is not a weak song on the disc and each has a unique flavor reflecting the Moorish influence resulting from Spains proximity to North Africa and the indelible mark left from the Islamic occupation for 700 years. The music is a remarkable combination of instruments, both old and new world, coming together to create a synthesis of sound reflecting the duality of Spanish culture. Images of the Alhambra, Christian motiffs mixing with geometric tiles, fretwork windows revealing orange and palm trees, pools of water and distant mountains with white buildings in the foreground, all this brought you by Radio Tarifa. There are not many more beautiful discs than this. Some of the songs have a spiritual feel, each is transcendental is some way. Each track takes the listener to faraway lands, a different time period, exotic images slightly tarnished by the modern harsh realities of a post 9/11 world. To say this disc is genius is not hyperbole, it is simple yet complex, a dense and fluid arrangement of songs for the time traveler, truly unique and enchanting. The opening track "Rhumba Argelina " is a perfect example of the gitano experience that awaits. Not sure? Check out track two, "Oye China," with it's lament and melodic interplay between the musicians. A truly fantastic piece of music to be enjoyed by all who love world music.

            Album Description

African rumba, based on the clave family of rhythms, is most closely associated with the Congo basin area of Central Africa. However, rumba music has also flourished in distinct regional forms in both East and West Africa. In Nairobi, Kenyan, Tanzanian and Congolese musicians came together to create Kenyan rumba - some of the finest dance music on the continent. The Golden Sounds Band carries forth the rumba tradition with their simple melodies, complex vocal harmonies, luscious interlocking guitars, and rich saxophone ornamentation and solos.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars A beautiful cd.......2004-05-24

It seems to me that African guitar music has a bit of a 'learning curve' - it takes a bit of listening before it sinks in, and even over time people either love it or they just don't get it. Then again, that can be true of any music or cultural style. Actually this is a beautiful example of a band playing classic East African guitar band music, an earthy, organic variation on the classic Congolese style honed by legendary bandleaders like Franco, Rochereau, Grand Kalle and others in the post-colonial era.

Not many recordings of this music have come our way lately, and Kenya like most of Africa is being swept by hip-hop so it's getting harder to hear real-live bands (as opposed to DJs and samples). So this is a throwback of sorts, not unlike Buena Vista Social Club in that regard. But like the music played by the Buena Vista folks, this music is far from dead - it's just bubbling a little under the radar screen.

Indeed fans of Buena Vista may be interested in this cd. And if you caught the Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab on VH1 (or elsewhere) and found that to your liking, you'll definitely want to check out Golden Sounds and the East African guitar band tradition in general (another good introduction to this music is the sampler Rough Guide to the Music of Kenya). Compared to Baobab, the music is a bit airier, more upbeat, hookier even (Magnetic Fields fans take note). But it comes from the same wonderful historic moment where Cuban music, African music and the electric guitar came together in colonial and post-colonial Africa.

            2 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2004-02-07

I love African music but this CD is not one I like. It is very repetitive. I have many African Music CD's where I recognize each song. I don't think I would ever be able to do that with this one. Nothing stands out as being any different from the the others. I suppose if you wanted to practice dancing the rumba this would give you endless rumba rhythms but for just listening they become very annoying.
