Never ever to find more graceful play!.......2007-03-09
sublimity itself. Though I have listened to many a world-famous guitarist,
I have never been so fascinated as by his play. I couldn't but make intimate friends of mine a present of Parkening's CDs like "In the Spanish Style", through which I felt I could show them what real music is like. I never ever imagine I could find more graceful play than that of Christopher Parkening at least in the world of the guitar.
Grunting and moaning explained.......2006-01-03
Peter, sorry about that.
Great Introduction to Classical Guitar.......2005-04-07
As a rock/blues/pop guitarist, I've been learning some classical over the last few years. And this disc has been my reference. Parkening's playing is confident and enjoyable. Capricho Arabe stands out as does the Sor studies that he covers.
My only complaint is Leyenda, his performance is less than passionate and the recording doesn't sound EQ'd correctly in a few spots. Other artists have better recordings of this song (John Williams comes to mind).
If you are looking for a great classical guitar CD, this is a great place to start.
Excellent collection.......2004-05-06
Parkening in top form.......2004-02-28
I don't know about grunting, but if you listen closely, there is some noticeable sighing from Parkening on a few of the tracks, especially the third. Presumably, he was getting weary from all the work his fingers were getting in playing those immensely complex arrangements. But to go as for as to say it ruins the recording is ludicrous. In fact, the sighing adds to the intimacy and accessibility of the recording. I had always felt distant while listening to a Parkening album because he sounded TOO polished. He plays great here, but to hear his voice, even in its slightest audible sound, adds to the album's charm.
If you're a classical guitar enthusiast, this album is essential.

Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23
This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.
Amazing.......2006-05-08
A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16
But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

A Big Surprise.......2003-09-28
This is a great album, I enjoyed every cut on it. The first and last cuts are the ones I really get,Cuidate ad Desde el Puerto. These are fresh sounds to me and some cuts have a touch of European influence. By the way I am just about ignorant in Spanish, but listening to this CD, it doesn't matter.
W-o-W.......2003-09-02
El Viaje de Copperpot is a good example (a very good example indeed) of how to compose good pop music without falling into routine. I've read some reviews giving out little stars to this group, and often making reference to other Spanish or Latin groups. That is in my humble opinion a big mistake since LODVG, although under the pop-rock sound movement, is unique. Their lyrics are unique, and their music is unique. If listened to all of the songs' album carefully (it happens the same on their next album) it is possible to detect a big influence in each song from a different well known group. I personally found many hidden references out of Supertramp style, though when listened for the first time they're difficult to spot.
They needn't complicated - often badly chosen - synth sounds or innovative fx to create the desired athmosphere. Yes, they have keyboards, and indeed they are very very well implemented, but this group is mainly acoustic. They utilize their resources carefully achieving clean, well designed songs, easy to listen and remember, but with harmonies, themes and scores in general well, very well made, varied, non-repetitive but preserving their astounding style.
If you think this might be too much for you, then return to Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin. Otherwise, I highly recommend you give them a chance.

beautiful, catchy and totally romantic.............2006-07-27
Who are Sin Bandera? They are Leonel Garcia, from Mexico, and Noel Schajris, from Argentina. For starters, their voices are absolutely a pleasure to listen to. They have a real talent for conveying the pleasure and pain of romance in through their lyrics, melodies and expression. What's more, they aren't sappy or repetitive. Although this music is deceptively laid back, don't overlook the attention to instrumentation, harmony and diversity in musical influences. Some of my favorite songs on this album are the ones that have gotten little airplay in the United States. Many people know this album for the hit "Que Llloro" (translation: How I Cry). Though, this song is beautiful and heartbreaking,I love when these guys tap into more Latin influences ("Ven" and "Te Esperare" as two examples, where you hear flamenco elements), as well as their more jazzy sensiblities ("Magia" and "Cancion Para Los Dias Lluviosos").
You will fall in love with this duo and their wonderful music and definitely won't be disappointed. Buy this album today......

A work of art.......2005-06-14
The hits are clearly the best on this album, but there are enough of them and enough versions of these hits to make it a very strong effort. The harmonizing of these two is unmatched in any language. The pair can not only create ballads, but can create some nice soulful, catchy faster songs, too.
Yo se ahora porque es "Album Del Año - Lo Nuestro Premios".
You will not be disappointed. The CD comes with a video, too, which I haven't yet seen.
There are only two albums from la musica latina de 2004 that I would buy before this one: Paulatina- Paulina Rubio and Si-Julieta Venegas
I must have, even for gringos like me.
Reminiscient of Motown.......2005-05-20
Some of the tracks remind me of Boyz-2-Men in the ways they harmonize, but Sin Banderas definately has a sound all their own. I love their slower ballads - but suprisingly, my favorite tracks are the faster, more upbeat tracks like Magia (track 6). If you want to enjoy some good Spanish music that is remiscient of Motown - buy this CD.
This CD is my favorite.......2005-04-07

Informed by a vintage Hollywood production sheen and flashback-fueled, identity-questioning melodramatics worthy of Hitchcock, Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar's sexually-charged film was quickly hailed as a mature masterpiece. The film's classic Hollywood conceits are deep-rooted, and Iberian composer Alberto Iglesias reinforces the film's often retro mood via a brooding, classically oriented score with an ear towards history. It may briefly excerpt Rossini's "Kyrie" to haunting effect, but the touchstone here is the Bernard Herrmann of Hitchcock's prime, with an emphasis on their epochal Vertigo and especially the tense, dark strings of Psycho (which "Escena Familiar" and "Cine Olimpo" echo with haunting grace). But while Iglesias capably evokes the color and spirit of those iconic touchstones, he crucially does it without sacrificing his own identity. Evocations of Spanish culture come mostly via vintage performances of "Quiza, Quiza, Quiza," "Cuoro Matta" and others, but on the expansive "Puerta Finale" the composer skillfully interweaves his Herrmann influences with touches of mournful jazz, flamenco and "Kyrie"'s choral echoes, creating a compelling, oft chilling post-modern new whole. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Even better than the film.......2004-11-21
His last collaboration with Pedro Almodovar, "Talk to her", is one of the best scores I've heard in recent years. In that movie, the scenes of the country villa, accompanying with the touching song of "Cucurrucucu Paloma" by Caetano Veloso, easily became one of the most beautiful five minuets I ever had in a theatre.
Before I went to see "Bad education", I can't help wondering, Could I have another enjoyable moment like "Cucurrucucu Paloma"? Luckily, I did have one, sort of. The Spanish rendition of "Moon River" is such a beautiful and haunting piece. But unluckily, the way the music delivered in the film is so disturbing. It started as a beautiful and innocent singing by a boy standing by the river while ended up with an innuendo of the ugly fact of sexual violations. However, if you didn't see the movie, the "moon river" will be a pure pleasant enjoyment.
Compared to the slightly weak movie, the music itself is powerful and flawless. From the beginning to the end, it doesn't have a single dull moment. In a word, buy this awesome CD!
The Starving Crocodiles... .......2004-11-17
Almodovar's latest movie is undoubtedly his best, and a very inventive film-noir that absorbs and electrifies you from the very beginning. Alberto Iglesias' score serves "as a cradle where the movie rests" as the auteur himself said.
La Mala Educacion (Bad Education) is one of -if not- the best soundtrack composed this year, and its style is absolutely magnificent. Following the film-noir trend, Iglesias' score is a mixture of tunes a la Herrman ("Juan y el Sr. Berenguer", "Por mi grandisima culpa", "Escena Familiar"), poignant waltzes ("Foulard en seda", "La Carta", "Valsetto"), and vocalized cues that reflect the theme of the movie, and illustrate it fittingly ("Kyrie", "La piscina", "El cine como espejo"). "Cine Olympo", an exquisite theme for the movie-within-the-movie manifests itself disguisedly many times, in variations, as Iglesias' has done in previous scores where a parallel story is narrated - The Flower of my Secret, Live Flesh, Talk to Her, and All About my Mother- however the best track in the score is the "Overture". Other superb tracks are "Carta del mas alla", "Plato", and "Adagietto"... melodies that crave lust, but "Puerta Final" -the MAIN theme- is absolutely grand; probably the best potpourri of songs written in the last decade, that will grab you by the horns from the moment it opens to the last saxophone refrain, in an orgasm of eight minutes that you will want to experience over and over again.
The soundtrack also consists of key songs that in one way or another relate to the main characters and the story: "Maniqui Parisien", "Cuore Matto", "Moon River" (a very avant-garde arrangement), and "Jardinero".
Alberto Iglesias has composed a score so dark, rich, hunting, powerful, and mysterious... that proves to be irresistible.
Experience the Bad Education!!!

Superb performances, superb sound quality.......2002-03-28
The solo piano pieces include Albeniz' Sevilla:sevillanas, which I am sure you will recognise, his Tango and a popular Malagueña.
Granados' Spanish Dance No 5 [sometimes known by other titles] is sensitively performed.
Albeniz' grandfather, Mateo's D major Sonata is the opening track. This music will be recognised by Australian music lovers as the theme music for Margaret Throsby's wonderful music and interview program.
The Montsalvatge Brief Concerto is a most exciting feature of the recording.
Highly recommended. Stunning sound quality.

Mexican trio Cafe Tacuba celebrates 15 years of making--and often revolutionizing--Spanish rock with Un Viaje. This lush, luxurious live set includes three discs of music and one electrifying DVD. (Separate versions are also available, but this generous edition is the most satisfying and is moderately priced.) The group has culled the best moments from a two-night stand in Oct. 2004 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, and the results are consistently electric. Every song, every rhythm, every guitar lick, every laugh is important, a not-to-be-missed moment. Cafe Tacuba's potent mix of music and message is a powerful thing, and the group thrives in its unflinchingly earnest, sweetly sincere approach to its art. Even during backstage interviews and recording studio hijinks, each member seems wholly pleased to be a part of the process. Throughout the proceedings, Cafe Tacuba's ardent fans thank them with hoots, hollers and constant singalongs to almost every song, making Un Viaje a joyous trip for everyone involved. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Great Music, great price!.......2005-09-07
I sat to watch the DVD and realized that the critics of the image quality must have only seen the beginning of the concert which was done in black and white with a grain effect to accent the songs that were being performed. I thought this was pretty unique, as well as other methods of filming that were employed for the concert.
The band gives a great performance as always and is translated into the 3 CD's and DVD that complies un viaje. I think this is a great buy for the price is being sold for.

Packed with brilliant playing.......2006-08-05
One of the best CDs of Albéniz's music in a very nice price........2005-10-25
What we find here is a very racial spanish play of the Albéniz's scores, probably the most "spanish" performances recorded in the second half of the XXth Century. We can hear a very perfect technical playing with great passion and fire inside, something that is felt from the first chords of Iberia, and that become really "wild" in some passages of the work like that outstanding "El Corpus Christi en Sevilla".
Daniel Barenboim has declared his admiration for this Spanish pianist, for his technical perfection, for his feeling of the works and for the very close relation with the music he played, all this felt like in no other composer in this case (I think Falla is another composer felt very close by Sánchez, as we can listen in his recordings for Ensayo).
Apart from all the very well known pieces like Iberia or the Suite Española, we can listen in this 3CD album the monumental recording of La Vega, one of the Esteban Sánchez most incredible recording and a miracle of identification between composer, music and performer. I piece you should not lose.
The recording is quite good for being a small label in a country without tradition of classical-music recording. You've to remember this is a re-release from Ensayo catalogue, now released by Brilliant in a really wonder budget price; a set with no rival in this low price. The sound is even better than the original Ensayo release and some mistakes like you can listen in the original Ensayo release in the piece Mallorca is here taken out.
A great recording to put together with those from Larrocha (Decca, DDD) and Barenboim (Teldec), my favourite recordings.

A WEIRD JOURNEY AND A NEW BEGINNING... .......2007-06-26
Embellished with glam guitars as never have been heard before in their previous discography, "El extraño viaje" (Something like "The Weird Journey") contains 12 tracks full of new sounds used in some experimental ways which produced unequal results. I used the word "unequal" because, unfortunately, the album doesn't surpass the previous ones (such as "Arquitectura Efimera") and it feels like a back step regarding to its achievements.
But this has been made on purpose: Alaska and Nacho Canut have declared that they wouldn't continue the line established by their former work: instead, they beat for a new gamble. This album is their final venture.
Even from the cover, you can say something has changed: for the first time in a 15-years career, Fangoria uses the white color. That's another milestone!
But... don't get me wrong: Undoubtedly, THE ALBUM IS WORTH. You will hear fantastic songs; i. e.: "Fantasmas" ("Ghosts"); "El cementerio de mis sueños" ("The graveyard of my dreams") and "Mis plegarias atendidas" ("My attended prayers"); but I think that this work should have been polished a little bit more.
C'mon Fangoria! It looks like you are extremely interested in selling copies instead of giving us memorable music.
