4 out of 5 stars cdb-live from Iraq.......2007-07-23

Having grown up in New Jersey, during the heyday of southern rock, Charlie Daniels was a mainstay of my collection. This collection is a good compilation of some of their greatest hits. More importantly this cd shows the patriotism and support that this band has shown throughout the years. To hear the troops whooping and hollering during the performance makes owning this CD totally worthwhile. It brings back lots of great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album From the Frontline.......2007-07-17

This is a great CD that includes most of the CDB's greatest hits. Also, there is just something special about an artist willing to record a live album on the frontlines of conflict. I'm not sure that any artist has done this before.

Album Description

Rahim Alhaj is the caretaker of a vital strand of Iraqi musical tradition. He learned in Baghdad with Munir Bashir and other great 20th-century player/teachers. AlHaj left Iraq under political pressure in the 1990s, resettling in New Mexico, and now shapes his musical inheritance for future generations in his own way, in his own time. These nine extended improvisations on the oud, the short-necked Arabian lute, treat us to a creative artist's impression of a proud tradition meeting modernity. Souhail Kaspar accompanies AlHaj on Near Eastern percussion. Extensive bilingual notes, photos, bibliography and discography included. 9 tracks, 73 minutes of music, 32 page booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Soul-settling, cathartic statements with improvisation & Iraqi song on oud & percussion.......2007-08-05

Playing Time - 73:26 -- Rahim Alhaj is a master of the oud (Arabic lute). All but one of the nine tracks span between 7-11 minutes. Alhaj's original taqsim (instrumental improvisations) provide a contemporary interpretation of maqams (the unique pitches on the Arabic musical scale along with their melodic movement). Alhaj's material is also rooted in and derived from this Iraqi musical tradition. For example, "Taqsim Maqam Hijaz" includes a rendition of the famous Iraqi song "Atop the Palm Tree." In fact, each piece includes improvisation followed by a famous song. While it might have been more interesting for some of the pieces to be arranged with a fuller maqam ensemble sound of spike fiddle (joza) and dulcimer (santur) too, some of the cuts do feature percussionist Souhail Kaspar plays goblet drums (tablah, dumbak) and small tambourine (riqq). Apparently, he didn't use a frame drum (daf) that maqam ensembles sometimes include. In "Taqsim Maqam Sika" and "Taqsim Maqam Hijaz," the riqq (or daff) makes its most prominent appearance and provides for a colorful expression in that piece. Born in Lebanon, Kaspar studied music in Syria but now makes his home in Los Angeles. While the 32-page CD booklet could have said more about Kaspar's instruments, the bilingual musical explanations for each track are educational.

A prodigy who began playing oud at age nine, Rahim Alhaj subsequently graduated from Baghdad Conservatory in 1990. He also holds a degree in Arabic Literature. In 1991, after the first Gulf War, Alhaj's activism against the Saddam Hussein regime led to is forced move to Jordan and Syria. The political refugee relocated to the U.S. in 2000 and now lives in Albuquerque, N.M. There, he won the 2003 Albuquerque Arts Alliance Bravo Award for Excellence in Music.

On this album (his fourth overall), the accomplished and proficient musician says that the intent of each piece is to reflect the maqam tradition and, in doing so, to settle the soul. He does a fine job of introducing us to the musical and aesthetic of the Iraqi style. Rahim's music has both delicate and forceful moments. Its full-bodied essence speaks forcefully as he combines traditional Iraqi maqams with more contemporary inspiration and insight. While this kind of improvisational global sound may be novel to many westerners' ears, its strength is its creativity and imagination that take us on an impressive 73-minute atmospheric journey. His closing number, "Taqsim Maqam Saba" is an emotional expression of sorrow and grief. There also seems to be a prevalent thread in his compositions for peace, hope, optimism and compassion in the future. Undoubtedly, Rahim misses his homeland, but he also makes soul-settling and cathartic musical statements about his musical rejuvenation and personal renewal in the United States. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars The "Must-have" Arabic Music CD of 2006.......2006-12-24

This CD of traditional Iraqi music, including songs, maqams and improvisation featuring Rahim Alhaj, the Iraqi oud master taught by Munir Bashir in Baghdad, with Souhail Kaspar, Lebanese percussionist, is exceptional. Through his music and high level virtuosity, this brilliant artist is able to portray a wide-range of emotions--from haunting sorrow and angst to joy and passion. This album is such a delight to listen to that it has become one of my very favorites. Rahim Alhaj's musical message of compassion, peace and understanding between cultures is furthered in this recently released CD. I really enjoyed hearing his personal and musical story featured on NPR All Things Considered this week. This CD is a "must-have"!

Album Description

Meticulously selected from Iraqi cassettes and LPs found in Syria, Europe and the Iraqi neighborhoods of Detroit, Michigan, this unique collection of folk and pop styles displays a wealth of outstanding music that is exclusive to Iraq and has rarely been showcased abroad. There are many reasons why Iraqi music stands alone in the dynamic world of Arabic music: one example is the unbelievable rapid fire machine-gun rhythms fluttering atop the main tempo. This is the work of a unique nomadic hand drum called the khishba -- also known as the zanbour (Arabic for "wasp"). A style prominently featured here is the infamous Iraqi choubi -- a driving rhythmic style that can include fiddles, double reeded instruments, percussion, bass, keyboards and oud over its signature beat. Other styles featured are the basta (an urban Baghdadi style), the bezikh, and the pulsating hecha. Also heard is the mawal -- a vocal improv! that sets the tone of a song, regardless of the style. Additionally there are three cuts from Ja'afar Hassan's 1970s record, Let's Sing Together. Being a folk-rock record, it's a true anomaly for Iraq. Hassan was a mouthpiece for the Iraqi Socialist movement just a few years before Saddam Hussein. But most of the music in this collection was produced during the Saddam period between the 1980s and 2002. Since the 2003 invasion and the wholesale disassembly of the country, classic tracks like these may already be part of a disappeared past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An incredible album.......2007-04-29

This album is absolutely amazing. Like the rest of the Sublime Frequencies collections, you'll find forgotten songs here which you'll have in your head for days and months; but this is better than the rest. The atmospheric songs of Ja'afar Hassan are breathtaking Middle Eastern folk-rock, the only music I've heard like it in the Arab world -- though somewhat reminiscent of contemporaneous Turkish folk-rock. The tracks are beautiful, with acoustic guitars forming a wall of sound and a powerful electric guitar played oud-like jumping in and out to echo the majestically sung vocal line.

Those folky songs are the first draw of the album. But the real attraction are what compose the rest of it: hyper-kinetic, frantic dance grooves, using Middle Eastern scales strictly (unlike Ja'far Hassan), with a distinctively Iraqi rhythmic propulsiveness. Synth drums played incredibly fast so that it sounds like a machinegun, a wailing vocal, noodling keyboards, an occasional wind instrument or fiddle (it's the rat-a-tat machinegun drum machine sound that differentiates it from Syrian, Egyptian and other Arab popular styles, they say). It's both modern and traditional: thumping electronic bass and drums (distinctly analog and fuzzy) with village-style vocals and fiddles and flutes. It's also the fastest music you've ever heard. These songs beautifully evoke their creation sometime in the 80s, somewhere in Iraq, using no more resources than a Casio keyboard, a drum machine, and someone who can sing. Everything is completely lo-fi but completely compelling. I should add that it's all very loud and heavy-sounding, which makes it all the more powerful.

I have to say that over the last year, since I got this album, it has probably been the music I have listened to most. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Buy it now, if you have any interest in Middle Eastern music, or any interest in the forgotten popular music of the last few decades.

5 out of 5 stars Unity through Music.......2006-12-12

Ron Yuval's "Tree of Life," features essentially the same excellent ensemble and the same woman Arabic singer, Najwa Gibran, as their previous CD, but it has a different emphasis. While "Under the Olive Tree" was mainly Eastern Mediterranean and more uniform in tone and slow tempo, the new CD has a foot in Andalusia/Sefarad, with more varied and vigorous tempi. The first CD is more contemplative or meditative; the second CD is more nostalgic. One is spiritual, the other is historical-cultural. The musical arrangements are somewhat better in "Tree of Life" probably because of the songs themselves and because the troupe is more experienced with each other. I like them both and to say which is better depends on mood and setting, but for the variety of music and more cheerfulness, I would go with "Tree of Life." This ensemble of Jews, Muslims, and Christians, whose releases are from Israel, demonstrates hope in a troubled land; then, musicians have always crossed boundaries and prejudices. Music is true Tree of Life.

5 out of 5 stars The new generation.......2005-04-26

Kazem A-Saher is one of the few young singers who continues the great tradition of Arab music, of Abdelwahab, Farid, Um Koulthum and others.
While he does not sound like them, his music is rich, diverse and soulful. Each song is interesting in its own way, and both the vocals and the instruments are at a high level. I recommend this, and other Cd's by him, to anyone who wants to listen to great contemporary Arab music.

5 out of 5 stars a world music idol.......2003-01-05

Kasem is a charismatic superstar of international fame who has sold over 30 million albums, and whose beautiful, agile voice has made him one of the premier interpreters of Middle Eastern music. Using a traditional orchestra, rather than the synthesizers many use today, he sings in a classical style that was more prevalent a few years ago, and his songs are rhythmic, moderately up-tempo pieces, many of them which he has composed himself.

The musicianship is top notch, and I especially like the arrangements that feature the zither. All the tracks are good; track # 3, "La Titnahad", has a catchy refrain that will keep you humming long after playing the CD, and is repeated as a re-mix on track # 12. Being an enhanced CD, it includes a video of this song, which is about a store mannequin who comes to life when a certain pretty girl looks at him, and one can see that Kasem is not only wonderful to listen to, but very attractive as well.

Born 41 years ago in Iraq, Kasem was a child prodigy and received extensive musical training, specializing in the oud, and was writing poetry at an early age; he is one of the most critically acclaimed artists of this musical genre, and this CD is a fine addition to any world music collection. It comes in a sturdy fold-out cardboard case with the meaning of the lyrics translated into English. The sound is excellent, and the total time is 62'53.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-01-30

I got two cpies from this wonderful Cd for our great arabic singer kazem Al SAher all the 12 songs are wonderulf including two more we miss in the Arabic release. I like all his voice, music, and songs.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2000-11-16

I liked the album, and also the addition of Masikan and the remix.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding; Confirms Kazem's Mastery of His Musical Tools........2000-11-14

Kazem Al-Saher hails the millennium with this long awaited release The Impossible Love (Al-Hob Al-Mustaheel), which has proven to be an outstanding album that confirms the diversity of Kazem's musical capabilities. Not only does it hold the beautiful ballads for which Kazem is renowned, but also an exhilarating mix of dance rhythms that reveal a Kazem that has not been known before. Kazem's two personas jointly present in The Impossible Love a collection of simple melodies that capture the senses instantly, along with some of the most difficult and intricate compositions in Kazem's career. The works include collaborations with the Arab world's most distinguished poets, as well as a fine team of music arrangers. This Mondo Melodia release, also Kazem Al-Saher's first U.S. release, includes a diverse selection of Arabic and Iraqi music styles, and is therefore a very appropriate introduction to classical and contemporary Arabic music.

Furthermore, this Enhanced CD is an upgrade to the original Impossible Love album. This release has two new tracks not available in the original release: Masikan Udi and La Titnahhad the remix. Masikan Udi, one of Al-Saher's most poignant songs, is released in this studio recording for the first time ever, years after its first concert presentation, and at a time when the authenticity of patriotic songs has come into wide uncertainty. La Titnahhad is remixed by the notable Transglobal Underground. In addition, this ECD includes the music video of La Titnahhad, and that is quite a treat. The music video of La Titnahhad has earned the highest ranks in Arab charts since it started airing, and not with out merit. It serves as a visual indication of the fresh soul that has invigorated Kazem's distinguished classicism.

Altogether, this album is worthy enough that I can recommend it with much confidence to all those who appreciate the arts of music and song, hoping that music enthusiasts everywhere discover the treasures of the Middle East that Kazem has started to uncover.

3 out of 5 stars Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30

As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).

That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.

The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.

For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.

5 out of 5 stars excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27

Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Colourful Masterpiece!.......2005-12-01

Yair Dalal exemplifies a rare mixture between conflicting trends in music: traditional versus modern, Eastern versus Western and Jewish versus Arabic. He also explores musical traditions of different countries like Iraq, Turkey and India, besides Jewish traditional music. Most of the pieces presented here are of charming beauty and very colourful and great instrumental arrangement.

Although Dalal is not as skillful in playing the violin as in musical composition, his taqsims on the Middle Eastern violin are very haunting. The Al Ol ensemble membres are very skillful players. The recording quality is not perfect, but it is not "bad" - as the previous reviewer sais - either.

I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in Middle Eastern/Eastern music.

1 out of 5 stars Nice Music, Bad quality recording.......2005-07-21

Hi I liked the artists music, but the problem is with the recording quality. Except for the first track the remaining track were unclear.

Unlike his first CD's , Silan is not a solo one , with the backup of Al Ol Ensemble (great sound) , Dalal is getting closer to the western eastern oriented music lovers . This rainbow coloured train (you may call it Trance Ararat or Orient ..), takes you all the way from Israel to Turkey , Iran , India and some other exotic places . Each tune takes you to another place , so relax , don't forget your nargila and cup of strong black coffee , the pleasure is all yours .

5 out of 5 stars mesmerizing middle eastern sounds.......1999-08-23

I bought this CD a few weeks ago and have listened to its breathtaking dream-like Israeli/Arabic sounds of peace at least 20-30 times already. I am not of eastern heritage, a musician, nor versed in eastern music, and am enjoying this CD tremendously. It is somehow modern and ancient simultaneously, almost a brief anthology of eastern sounds. The instrumentation is delicate and powerful. If you're new to middle eastern music like I am, you'll hear familiar sounds, but not songs. Also if you like Indian music, I think you will appreciate this album as it seems to have an Indian flavor as well. Somehow Dalal and the Al Ol Ensemble have managed to give the music both an exotic, timeless quality while at the same time making it approachable to the foreign western ear. I don't know how they've done it, but I am now looking for more.

    3 out of 5 stars Iraqi music.......2006-02-08

Before Zionist settler colonialism sharped antagonisms and the Arab ruling class reacted with a deadly and reactionary antisemitism, communities of Jewish religion or descent contributed an important part of the culture and life of the countries of Arab east. Nowhere was this more pronounced than in music, particularly in Iraqi. Until the Hashemite (same family of thugs and theives that currently oppresses the people of Jordon) government Washington and London imposed on Iraq expelled Iraqi Jews, almost all Iraqi traditional musicians were Jews. In the 1930s the delegations Iraq sent to world music festivals were entirely composed of Jews.

This musician like many others continues tradition of beautiful and wonderful Arab music which continues in the Iraqi jewish diaspora around the world, but particularly in Israel.

Listen to this and take in the freedom of motion, as well as the classic twining around traditional rhythems and scales that makes this music unique. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

4 out of 5 stars An Ancient Musical Tradition Still Lives On.......2004-11-05

Hakki Obadia is one of the few representatives of the noble and ancient Iraqi-Jewish musical tradition. Having emigrated to the US in his youth, he became the New York Sefardic community's most sought-after Middle Eastern Jewish singer / instrumentalist of the previous generation. This CD ranges from religious and spiritual melodies and chants to love songs, and features several instruments and local styles. The recording qualities are not quite up to contemporary standards, which is why I rated it with four stars. However, the music is excellent and should be of interest to anyone who appreciates great ethnic and folk music, especially with a spiritual bent.
