Songbird cherry-picks tracks from the three locally released albums of Eva Cassidy, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals went virtually unheard outside her native Washington, D.C., during her short 33 years with us. Lost to melanoma in 1996, Cassidy sang with an unaffected purity and an astonishing ability to make both classic and contemporary songs sound like they were written just for her. Sting's "Fields of Gold" finally lives up to its title through the alchemy of Cassidy's transcendent rendition, while other tracks on this anthology showcase her ease in the realms of pop (Christine McVie's "Songbird"), soul ("People Get Ready"), gospel ("Wade on the Water"), and traditional standards ("Autumn Leaves" and "Over the Rainbow"). Framed by understated jazz and pop arrangements, Cassidy's clear, soulful voice and exquisite phrasing make her that rarest of vocalists whose interpretations are a complement to any song. A fine introduction to a true talent. --Billy Grenier

Album Description

Songbird is a posthumous anthology culled from the album Live At Blues Alley and her other solo release, Eva By Heart, along with one track from her 1992 duet album with Chuck Brown titled The Other Side. Blix label.

5 out of 5 stars HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-16

She will be a favorite for life. I own every one of her CD's. My 2 favorites on this CD are "Songbird" and "Time is a healer"- It stops me dead in my tracks and touches everything deep and pulls it out. I must admit, It's a crying CD- But in such a way that your insides are purified and cleansed by this Hauntingly beautiful voice of an angel. I always feel better after listening. God took her early because he must have needed an agels voice for his choir and if you don't believe in God, just listen to her voice and you will.

4 out of 5 stars A pure delight.......2007-07-10

Quiet and unassuming, and taken from us much too soon, Eva Cassidy's postumous collection of material takes standards, gospel, country, blue eyed soul, and pop, creating arrangements even the songwriters never thought of. Record producers had difficulty pigeon-holing her since she sang whatever moved her, thus a recording contract was not forthcoming (though she did produce a couple independent CD's and thankfully has numerous studio recordings).

Before dying of cancer in 1996 at the age of 33, she left behind a plethora of recordings, enabling her family and friends to release "new material" every so often. Relegated to obscurity outside of the Washington DC area that she jammed in, she was "discovered" five years later by an English radio station DJ who was mesmerized by her very beautiful take on Judy Garland's classic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Whereas most artists try to belt out the song in varied octaves (thanks to American Idol), Eva's version is quiet and melancholy, and stands the test of time.

Though Cassidy has numeorus CD's of material, Songbird will always be my favorite for its timeless collection of such varied material. Stand out tracks include "I Know You by Heart," "Songbird," the exquisite "Over the Rainbow," a gorgeous and lush rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold" (which is much better than his), and my personal favorite, "Autumn Leaves" an old standard that somehow seems fresh.

Cassidy had a way of evoking so much emotion in her simple songs and soulful arrangements and would have been a joy to see live. Sadly we all miss out.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL voice!!.......2007-07-06

I first heard Eva Cassidy singing Songbird on "Love Actually soundtrack" and HAD TO find more of her music!! I think Eva Cassidy may have the most beautiful/most pure voice I've ever heard!! From what I've read about her, I know that she was a beautiful person "inside" as well as "outside" in addition to having such a lovely voice. I'm sorry that "our world" lost her so soon - - she's singing among the Angels now! On this CD - - so very special to me - - are -- Songbird; Time Is A Healer; I Know You By Heart; Fields of Gold; & Autumn Leaves! I luv this CD and think you will too! I purchased 6 of Eva Cassidy's CDs & am very pleased with all of them and enjoy listening to her beautiful voice on an almost daily basis!

5 out of 5 stars Soulful.......2007-07-01

If ever there were a more soulful female vocalist, I can't imagine who it might be. There is not a phony note on the whole album.

2 out of 5 stars Eva Cassidy music CD.......2007-06-08

I wanted the "Somewhere over the Rainbow" song. I was very disappointed in all the other music on the CD.

Noted English screenwriter Richard Curtis makes his directorial bow with this romantic comedy that follows the dizzying foibles of no less than a dozen couples, featuring a cast that includes Hugh Grant as a bachelor British PM and Billy Bob Thornton as a disturbing hybrid of the worst of Clinton and Bush. Seemingly taking its lead from Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel (both of which Curtis also wrote), Love's rich, eclectic collection of pop songs becomes something more than mere movie-soundtrack wallpaper. Indeed, tracks as disparate as Joni Mitchell's hauntingly autumnal remake of "Both Sides Now" and the Pointer Sisters' effusive '80s hit "Jump" function somewhere between supporting player and narrative Greek chorus. It's a mature, often introspective collection that mixes the expected chestnuts (the Beach Boys' evergreen "God Only Knows") and covers (Eva Cassidy's stately version of Christine McVie's "Songbird," an R&B-infused take of "All You Need Is Love" by Lynden David Hall) with standout work from Norah Jones (a torched-up "Turn Me On"), Texas (the Dusty Springfield-esque dramatics of "I'll See It Through"), and Wyclef Jean's joyous "Take Me As I Am." Underscoring the film's Christmas subtext are three holiday-themed bonus cuts by Otis Redding, Billy Mack (the film's resident rock star burnout, played by Bill Nighy), and Olivia Olson. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars My complaint about Amazon.com.......2007-07-25

Note: Because I am unable to have my complaints addressed by Amazon, I will continue to post the following note on Amazon.com:

I just received the very late e-mail saying that the
order I placed on JUNE 6, 2007 cannot be filled until OCTOBER 4,
2007. This is the most irresponsible customer service that I have
had in a very long time. Not only did you fail to correspond with
me for nearly two months, you now have the audacity to suggest that
the earliest you can deliver this book is the fall of this year!?
This irresponsible (and flippant) response is breathtaking in its
cavalier attitude, where you say "either accept a delivery date four
months late or we will cancel your order". You should have
responded within a week at the most that you were having difficulty
obtaining the book so that I would no longer rely on you to get it
to me and I could then look elsewhere for it.
>
> I would suggest that you should send me the book that you promised
(and I believe I already paid for) ASAP. You could do a Google
search and find a copy (perhaps on your own site!) or you could call
the publisher in China and (at your expense) have them FED-X it to
you for delivery to me. But the one thing you shouldn't do is send
such a cavelier e-mail to me six weeks after I order from you and at
least several weeks after I had expected delivery. This is a rich
example of the incompetent arrogance of Amazon; one that will be
displayed prominently on the internet for some time to come if you
are not able to remedy this situation soon.

To add insult to injury, when I responded to the e-mail message, I recieved a conflicting e-mail from a "Mohan". Typically, I could not communicate back to him (or her) and was left to my own devices in the Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment.......2007-07-15

This review is for the American CD. I loved the movie and after viewing it for the first time immediately watched it again. I read on this site that some listeners were disappointed with the soundtrack, but I couldn't resist purchasing it anyway because I couldn't live without the Billy Mack song. Given the subject of the movie, I will call the CD a "heartbreaking" disappointment. The three Christmas songs are included here, but are listed as "bonus tracks," which indicates that the director of the movie didn't understand what the audience wanted from the soundtrack. "All I want for Christmas is You" and most especially Billy Mack's song "Christmas is all around us" are not just seasonal holiday songs within the context of this movie--they are the ultimate love songs. Everyone in the movie was great, but can there be many viewers who didn't feel Billy Mack was the center of the story? Yes, little kids with crushes, a widowed man who apparently finds another love quite quickly (Claudia Schiffer to boot), and young couples getting together are all very sweet. But the heartbreak of unrequited love, a married woman who realizes her husband is thinking about another woman and Billy Mack save the movie from being just too cute. Billy Mack was a mid-fifties, superficial, "ex heroin addict struggling for a comeback at any price" who figures out what love is and shares it with another human being, albeit not in a romantic relationship. Billy Mack (along with the unreturned love story line and the Emma Thompson story) lifted the movie out of the realm of cliches. The movie starts with Billy Mack and his song, which underscores the struggle for love that everyone in the movie is going through. But the song was gutted of its joy in the soundtrack version--very little use of the backup singers. Instead of including tracks that I don't think were even in the movie, this song should have been played at length, perhaps in two versions. The beginning of the movie with the song and the conversational interjections would have been a creative addition to the soundtrack. Another song gutted of its joy is "All you need is love"--the surprising and lovely orchestration in the movie was replaced with trite clapping on the soundtrack. At least the director couldn't mess with the Beach Boys and Joni, whose song underscored the tale of marital infidelity. But if you want to experience the joy of human beings taking the risk of "getting the s*** kicked out of us by love," watch the movie again. Don't waste your money on the soundtrack. When will directors figure out that audiences want the sound tracks just as they were in the movie?

CD is fine, but some of the music that was in the movie does not exist on the CD.... Too bad,,,,

If you even just liked the movie you will love the sound track. There were a couple of songs that I didn't even remember from the movie but it was awesome.

The movie was great. Although, not for kids to watch. But the movie was fun, funny and heart warming. The sound track is terrific. Great songs.

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers--artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great performance, great recording.......2007-07-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this and am happy I purchased it. Every bit of it is exceptional, the performance, the venue, and the recording. Definitely a great CD for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars ahead of her time.......2007-05-12

Wonderful music, we have everyone of her CD's. So sad that she isn't still around to make more wonderful music!

5 out of 5 stars Her definitive album.......2007-04-19

As I pulled into work one morning back in '98, I heard a song from this album on a public radio out of DC. Fortunately, reception was clean and clear that morning, and I listened in astonishment to the singer's remarkable interpretation of a song I had heard before (and, quite frankly, didn't really like). I had trouble finding the CD anywhere in Baltimore (there had been only a limited release on a small label), but when I eventually did find it, the whole was as remarkable as the one song.

From start to finish, this is an extraordinary album, showcasing the remarkable breadth of a talent too soon lost. To me, "Live at Blues Alley" is Eva's definitive album, and it ranks in my top ten albums of my fairly extensive collection. Listen to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great vocalist.......2007-03-20

This album is one of my favorites, the music ranges from joyful to thoughtful to hauntingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best female voices I have ever heard........2007-03-08

This is the second time I have purchased this CD. I bought one for a friend because I have fallen in love with Eva's voice. There are so many qualities in those pipes. She can put her own spin on every song she has redone and made it unique. I really don't have words to describe her. What a loss it is for her family and her fans because she was just beginning to be discovered. She never compromised her art for anyone. She had a pure voice and pure soul and it came thru in her music.

Minus all the machinery that the music industry can put behind an artist, Eva Cassidy sang bewitchingly in Washington, D.C. and then died without fanfare in 1996, when she was a mere 33 years old. And then the world began hearing Cassidy, thanks largely to Songbird, a posthumous collection of locally released album tracks that went on to garner media attention, critical praise, and commercial success. This collection gathers both live and studio cuts delivered within warm, mostly acoustic settings; often it is simply Cassidy, her voice, and her guitar. Inside are some of Cassidy's best-executed covers, beginning with Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" and ending with a stellar rendition of the traditional gospel "Way Beyond the Blue." In between are heart-wringing versions of Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." What distinguishes Cassidy so completely is her offhand ability to transform songs beyond their initial character with a voice that brilliantly mixes an airy floating quality and an edge that you know can pop open to reveal a belt-it-out strength to rival the best in the singer's trade. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

The 2000 release Time After Time is a collection of 12 previously unreleased Eva Cassidy performances, primarily studio recordings, Time After Time also includes four live tracks. This album continues the tradition set by previous Eva Cassidy releases, a mix of traditional favorites such as 'I Wandered by a Brookside' and more contemporary songs like the title track, a remake of the 1984 Cyndi Lauper hit. What EvaCassidy does to a song is magical. It's sad that she died at such age.

I have to be honest and say that I was a little disappointed with this CD. I was so spoiled by her other CD's that I was expecting the same here. Mind you, there are a few tracks that I really liked but I have to admit, I was really thinking of sending it back. But I won't because I'm hoping it'll grow on me.
Believe me, I wish I could've given this 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-06-26

I bought this CD to listen to at work (I am 6 months pregnant). The quality is awesome and the choice of songs is perfect I can listen to it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for putting kids to sleep!.......2007-06-08

I absolutely love this CD! In fact this is our second one because we wore out the first since we played it so much. It is very soothing, and in fact we used it to help both our kids (now 4 and 18 mo) go to sleep since they were babies. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing.......2007-04-10

It is very soothing and really helps you relax. I enjoy listening to it in the car during my high stress commute.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for all Parents of Little Children !!!.......2006-11-25

I bought this when my first baby was...well, a baby. That was 8 years ago. Now I am on my 4th copy of this cd (Mozart For Mothers to Be) and my 3rd child. Nothing works better. I'm on here to buy my 4th copy becasue I've worn them out over the years and have to keep replaceing them. My 8 and 3 year old still use it, and now the new baby, also. Make it part of your nightly bed time routine and you'll have good little sleepers in no time. I swear by it. It is very soothing, calming and not distracting so it won't drive you bonkers if you can hear it a little from the next room.

A truely great gift for new parents, or if you have a sleepless little one at home. Turn on the cd, turn down the lights and let it sooth them to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Inspire the baby-within.......2005-12-13

Beyond sheer musical appreciation and enjoyment, Mozart's music in general is ideal for gently stimulating the "creative centers" as well as instilling a sense well-being. While there is much academic disagreement about the extent or reality of the so-called "Mozart Effect," it doesn't take a genius to observe how Mozart's music puts most people (and probably babies-to-be) in a happy mood ready to take on the day's challenges. There is a simplicity - yet elegance and musical brilliance - in his music that is also well-suited for the youngest of children.

The selections on this CD are all excellent and represent a nice range of Mozart's compostions, emphasising those that are ideal for creating a pleasant backdrop for leisure, dining and social occasions ("divertimentos"). The recordings are from the creme of musicians famous for their Mozart. Few works are as elegant and soaring as the Serenade #10 for winds - an astonishingly beautiful tune made famous from the early scenes of the movie, "Amadeus." Mozart supreme gifts of music are even seen in such humble "background music" as these pieces. And such continuity of warm, leisurely tones as these over 70 minutes is ideal for inspiring the baby to-be if that is why you are considering this CD. Better to expose a baby to the gentile, lyrical music of Mozart than to the dissonant, loud and disturbing tones of some classical music written well after Mozart.

As the reviewer below rightfully notes, compilation CD's of various unrelated works like this one is not quite how classical music is best meant to be heard. But in a way it is better for many to start with such collections like this - especially for those who just want the more quiet selections that are unintrusive. In that respect, this collection can be satisfying for most anyone (not just moms or babies). I have a huge classical music collection, but still really enjoy listening to one full CD of similar-temperament music like this one that flows easily and smoothly that doesn't demand my attention but only seeks to delight. And, in the end, that was the simple and primary goal of many of Mozart's compositions - to be purely enjoyed and delighted.

For anyone who suspects that record companies will soon be releasing Eva Cassidy's voice mail messages, it's extraordinarily pleasing to note that Imagine is more than just a bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping exercise. All of these tracks are previously unreleased and most are live recordings, but listeners who already own Live at Blues Alley know just how refreshing Cassidy's live performances were. Check out her take on Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" to feel a shiver of delight at another effortlessly ideal cover, or listen to her laid-back "You've Changed" from the Blues Alley sessions to experience more of her soulful jazz. Elsewhere, the solo acoustic reading of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" shows off her guitar skills, and if "Imagine" doesn't ever scale the heights of Songbird's "Over the Rainbow" it still demonstrates how she always had something new and uniquely compelling to say when performing a familiar standard. Studio recordings "Still Not Ready" and "I Can Only Be Me" are, oddly perhaps, the least successful cuts. Happily, the album concludes with another lovely solo standard, "Danny Boy." The recording quality varies noticeably from track to track, and there are a few awkward fade-outs--presumably to remove audience noise--but still the sparkling music comes across quite vividly. Imagine may not be the best way to discover Eva Cassidy for the first time, but established fans will warmly welcome this new collection. --Mark Walker

Album Description

'Imagine' (featuring all previously unreleased tracks) is the first Eva Cassidy album released since 'Songbird's worldwide success. 'Songbird' is certified Gold in the U.S., was No.1 on both Billboard's Catalog Album Chart & Internet Chart in 2001, & was a No. 1 pop album & certified triple platinum in the U.K. In addition to Eva's starkly moving tribute to John Lennon's 'Imagine', Eva Cassidy re-interprets 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore' - distinctly different from the Buddy Holly & Linda Ronstadt versions. Ryko. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Still in the top.......2007-07-07

All seven CD`s I bought with Lady Eva Cassidy is a tast of heven. Fantastic entertainer, world class. I am sorry not to be able to have the experience to see her live on stage.

5 out of 5 stars Majestic.......2006-06-26

Ms. Cassidy's death at such a young age left a large gap in American Music. Gifted with a pure, clear voice (which she could dirty up when the song called for it), perfect intonation, and a feel for lyrics, she was a singer's singer. She rarely fails to disappoint. On this album, check out her version of Danny Boy. Danny Boy is one of the most beautiful ballads in the Western canon. Of course, Danny Boy has been sung umpteen times, some excellent, some not so excellent, but I think Ms. Cassidy's version is one of the most touching I have ever heard. She stays very close to the melody, her guitar playing is simple yet effective, and her tone is suitably plaintive and mournful. If you don't have a tear in your eye at the end of the song, Irish or not, you must have a heart of stone.

Parenthetically, another Washington, D.C. resident, with whom Ms. Cassidy recorded on occasion, suffered an untimely death, by his own hand. Danny Gatton, Wizard of the Telecaster, committed suicide in 1994. The two of them had much in common. Both were perfectionists, and more important, both were eclectic in their musical tastes, refusing to be pigeonholed in one genre. Jazz, bluegrass, soul, country, it was grist to both of their mills; maybe that is why they worked with each other. Two geniuses of the D.C. area who died too young, with so much more music to give to the world. Pity.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine What Could Have Been.......2005-10-14

My second foray into the remarkable world of Eva Cassidy was as good as my first, "Live at Blues Alley." This young lady had an incredible vocal talent, both in terms of ability and interpretation. Where a woman this young obtained all the vocal talent contained in this CD is a mystery only God can answer, but at least we get to hear her legacy.

"Guess It Doesn't Matter Any More" is played as folk, a variation from Cassidy's usual style. Worry not, this acoustic song is nicely performed, and the guitar could have been eliminated because Cassidy's voice is beautiful. The next song is even better as Cassidy belts out the pure high notes in "Fever." Cassidy brings sensuality to this song that harkens back to an era even earlier than that of 1956, when the song was written. Cassidy sings high notes that threaten to pass into the realm of the unheard for my aging ears. As with the previous song, the violin could easily have been eliminated to allow the percussion and bass to carry the song.

In the song "Who Knows Where Time Goes" I hear elements that remind me a lot of Diana Krall. A fan of Diana walked by as I was listening to this song and asked me if it was Diana singing. How to explain that the emotional and powerful voice coming over the speakers was from someone who had sold more than four million albums after she had died from melanoma in 1996? I said it was Eva Cassidy and he should try some of her albums, because she was a great, unrecognized talent.

Speaking of great, Cassidy next takes on a song made famous by the great Billie Holiday, "You've Changed." Cassidy reminds listeners what sultry means as her voice caresses the words of this song in a way that makes me wish I could have heard her in person. What a talent this lady had. I think Billie Holiday would have given her the thumbs up for this song.

I am amazed at the range of songs that Cassidy interprets. John Lennon's signature song "Imagine" is interpreted in Cassidy's unique way. This song is more than another remake, it is a true vocal interpretation that requires a listener to consider what might have been had Cassidy's career continued to progress. This is a remarkable song interpreted by a remarkable singer.

I enjoy the music on the song "Still Not Ready" almost as much as I enjoy Eva Cassidy's singing. The music and the vocals join seamlessly, and the wonderful bridge at nearly three minutes into the song blends progressive elements into this bluesy song. This song was deserving of a Grammy nomination had it been better known at the time it was originally recorded. Music fans who appreciate a wide range of genres will enjoy this song.

There is a certain challenge in listening to a wide array of music on one CD. Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" has country overtones. Accompanied only by her guitar, which she handles adroitly, Eva sings this song as though she was truly "a long way from home" "missing her loved ones." Though this song is a bit less vocally than some of her other songs, it is difficult to avoid being impressed by the purity of her notes. Fans of Gordon Lightfoot should be impressed with this interpretation of his song. How great would a duet between Gordon Lightfoot and Eva Cassidy have been?

Remaining in a similar vein is the short song "Tennessee Waltz," made famous by Patti Page. Once again, Eva's vocals bring a new interpretation to the song, but I am less enthused about this song and the previous song than other songs on this CD.

I am surprised that reviewer Mark Walker (the Amazon selected "professional" reviewer) considers "I Can Only Be Me" one of the less successful tracks on this CD. While this song is a bit short of songs that exceed the standard for greatness, such as "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," I still get chills listening to Eva sing "But how many times have you wished to be in spaces, times, places, than what you were." I believe Stevie Wonder would consider this interpretation to be very good at a minimum.

This CD closes with another standard. Eva manages to bring a tear to my eye with "Danny Boy," which is already a sad song. I assume that the guitar accompaniment is Eva's which is sufficiently minimal to keep the focus on Eva's incredible voice. This song is yet another that has the potential to give you chills in the right mood.

Much of the music on this CD was originally performed live. However, it is difficult to tell the origins of the music as audience noise was edited from the tracks. There may be places where the music and singing fades that can be attributed to the editing. However, this music begs to be played as loudly as possible, assuming that the glass in your house can handle the frequencies Eva sings without damage. I often forget that the original purpose of singing was to hear the emotional content of the words, and here Eva reminds us all abundantly that music is more than hype and packaging, it is a singer, and her words, and her emotions, and just enough music to glue it together.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Imagine.......2005-08-09

I love music - have been playing all my life and have a collection of CDs that number in the thousands. I listen to everything from Patti Austin to Frank Zappa. Eva Cassidy is on a very short list of absolute favorites. Eva's voice simply has to be heard. Eva blends the sweet sincerity of a folk singer with the power and bluesy feel of an R & B or Jazz singer. The songs on Imagine are a collection that showcases her folksier side. Just beautiful! If you don't have any Eva, you should. Once you do, you'll want everything.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine any voice being as lovely.......2005-07-31

I had heard of Eva Cassidy like most, with the tragedy of a young life full of talent snubbed out so early. I bought "Songbird" and enjoyed it. Many months later (last week), a co-worker gave me "Imagine" and said it was too 'durge-like' for her tastes. Having Eva's "Songbird", I was excited about hearing another of her albums. Like most, I never acted on my good intentions of buying other albums, my loss. I listened to "Imagine" with my earphones at work, and literally was brought to tears. I have never heard a more beautiful rendition of "Danny Boy". I also loved, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", "I Can Only be Me", "You've Changed", and "Tennesee Waltz". Most reviews rave on John Lennon's "Imagine", the title cut, but although it was good, the others mentioned were my favorites. If only "Danny Boy" was on the CD, it would have been worth the price of the whole CD. Now, I want to buy the Nightline t.v. broadcast about Eva, as I really want to see moving pictures of her. What a legacy she has left us. I thanked by co-worker, saying I'm glad our tastes are so different, as otherwise I would not have experienced this album (at least not so soon), and come to love it as I have. I hope Eva's family knows how much they have given the world with Eva's beautiful Life. Lord, be precious to your Soul, Eva Cassidy.

Have enjoyed this CD immensely with our four-year old. Great price for the quality. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars He started dancing as soon as we put it on!.......2007-01-09

My 12 month old loves this CD and happily bops away to the music (in the car he sometimes even starts singing!). We like it too and not being very well versed in Classical music, it is a nice mix for us.

5 out of 5 stars Better than baby einstein.......2006-02-26

This is a great CD, with great music, at a great price. Everyone seems to love Baby Einstein, but I don't like the plinking music on those CD's, I like real orchestral pieces to stimulate my child. This is exactly what parents need, at a good price!

5 out of 5 stars great music at a great price.......2006-02-02

I got this cd to use as background when putting my 18 month old to sleep and for car rides. So far it has not made it out of the car. The cd is wonderful. The first song is the Luftansa airline comercial song (that is what my husband calls it) and is beautiful. I didn't think my husband would enjoy the cd at all but he doesn't mind one bit listening to it, he actually will put it on himself when we get in the car. My daughter loves it and will often start nodding her head back and forth to songs. I actually listen to it even when my daughter is not in the car. The music is soft and relaxing but not boring. It is also one of the only cd's that my in laws don't mind listening to when they are in the car with us.

I only paid like $4 here on amazon for it and I gladdly would of paid more for such a great cd. Its a great cd for such a great price!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful CD for all ages.......2002-11-03

My whole family has enjoyed this CD. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. I think there is something for everyone on this one.

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

Like a stateside Sandy Denny, Eva Cassidy's voice managed to be ethereal yet soulful, haunting yet warm, and evocative enough to make you believe--at least during those moments when you're listening to it--that she's the best singer you've ever heard. The purity of the late Washington D.C. singer's voice, set against tasteful strings and her own angelic backing vocals, shines on the opening "I Know You by Heart," catches fire on "Wade in the Water," and never fades throughout this 1997 studio album. And while Cassidy's gorgeous vocals may be best served by quietly reflective tracks such as "Nightbird" and "Waly Waly," it's still fun to hear her attack "Time Is a Healer" with a melismatic fervor that could kick Whitney and Mariah's asses. If you're new to Cassidy, either this CD or the Songbird compilation would make a fine introduction to a great American artist. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Eva is pure pleasure!.......2007-05-12

Eva Cassidy is one of the most gifted and versatile voices I have ever heard. She has more moods than the weather. Her voice is by turns, blissfully light and tender, salty, jazzy, but always pure and true. I love this singer, and I have a huge collection of female singers. She is among the best. What a terrible loss that she is no longer with us.

Eva Cassidy has a voice like a bell. Her music is presented with instruments that do not overpower her voice and the final product is one of perfect balance.
Everyone I have introduced to Ms. Cassidy is totally captured by her albums.

This CD is definitely an uplifting arrangement of her musical renditions of some beautiful favorites! "Waly Waly", "I Know You By Heart", and "Blues In The Night" are beautifully sung by this amazing artist! She belts out Blues like you have never heard it before. You can hear not just a voice, but also her emotion all through her music. This is a phenomenal compilation of pop, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel as well as folk music. Even though this talented and remarkable artist and musician is no longer with us, she is still very much alive in our hearts through her music!

Eva Cassidy fans surely feel something akin to relief when another cache of tapes is opened for release. The singer's 1996 death at the age of 33, after all, rendered her output finite in the saddest and most frustrating way. American Tune's modus operandi is similar to previous Cassidy CDs in its mix of standard repertoire (here, everything from "Yesterday" to "God Bless the Child" and Ray Charles's "Hallelujah I Love [Him] So" rubs shoulders) and fine, less obvious choices (Joe Simon's early-'70s soul hit "Drowning in the Sea of Love"). The sometimes pedestrian backing does little to spoil the pleasure of Cassidy's pure tone and the surprises she's able to wring from the material--on the Charles tune, she even suggests a distaff Lyle Lovett. She'd no doubt be pleased to know that tracks uncovered at this point now sound like, well, notes from a missed, much-loved friend. --Rickey Wright

From her timeless reading of 'American Tune' (Paul Simon's reflections on an ever-changing America) to 'Drowning In The Sea Of Love' (a searing blues-rock take on the Joe Simon 70s hit written and produced by Gamble & Huff), this collection is filled with thrills and surprises. Blix Street.

How can someone who has sadly departed keep getting better?! Eva Cassidy is one of those "lost voices" whose recognition came too late. What a shame... she had a BRILLIANT career ahead of her, and this album is as good as I had expected. No disappointments here for Eva Cassidy fans!

4 out of 5 stars I Wish She Were Still Here.......2007-05-13

Another great album by a great singer taken from us way too soon. A voice suited for different genres, but especially at home in jazz or the blues. This is the fourth album I have purchased of Eva's and I have enjoyed each and everyone. Such a beautiful voice. A must have for Eva Cassidy fans.

5 out of 5 stars Just a terrific CD.......2007-04-06

I have just about worn out this CD in the first 2 weeks after receiving it..She does a great job on all the cuts but I just love The Water is Wide and You Take My Breath Away..2 songs I had never heard before this CD. What a shame we won't be getting more from her.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice.......2007-01-11

I first heard Eva Cassidy when a local shopowner played one of her CD. I went to the website and discovered that Eva passed away some time back. I bought 2 CDs and have been happily listening ever since. Her voice is sometimes reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, especially when she sings blues. However, Eva has a soft lyrical quality in her voice, also, which is lovely.
