Reissuing old dance records can be dicey, because so many of them don't age well. There are exceptions, of course, like this digitally spiffed up and beautifully packaged, 3-disc Renaissance collection from Sasha and John Digweed. Released originally in 1994, it's become a milestone representing not only the celebrated duo's first recorded mix but also a snapshot of British dance at its raving, glorious peak. Disc 1 opens with a triplet of Leftfield's "Song for Life" and moves through still-potent tracks from Disco Evangelists ("De Niro") and F. Machine ("Child Bride"). The run continues on discs 2 and 3, as it lightly glides through Fluke's "Slide" and EMF's "They're Here." And what would a trip down amnesia lane be without a stop at Moby's "Go"? Nostalgia only goes so far, and some songs that sounded great at the time are a little soft now (see "Not Over Yet"). But that innocence gets at the heart of the collection's appeal, reminding us of when dance music seemed primed to take over the planet. -Matthew Cooke

2 out of 5 stars Yikes...Cheers to Electronica's Evolution.......2007-06-05

If you recognize the tracks by name and have a strong sense of nostalgia or you are a newcomer and are curious about what electronica sounded like in the early 90's then it may be worth your greenbacks. Otherwise save your pennies on this Renaissance novelty.

Three discs featuring very poorly aged tracks encompassing various genres during their early (but continual) evolution.

I try to stay clear of accusing DJ's (that I also consider artists) of in your face commercialism, but this compilation has me changing my tune slightly. Re-releasing a compilation from 1994 in 2005 seems like an easy way to sucker a few people into buying an old collection of severely outdated tracks. Apparently the market was there as the original release was selling for up to $400 as a collector's item.

If you are curious about the history of electronica, and more specificly, Sasha and Digweed's early (possible their first) commercial release then you may be satified with this three disc set. Otherwise there are much better "Mix Collections" out there that document electronica's evolution.

Disc 1 and 2 get 2/5 stars while disc 3 gets 3/5 stars (just for the fact that it doesn't have multiple re-mixes of the same track on it like discs 1 and 2 do).

4 out of 5 stars The Renaissance Men.......2007-01-13

Celebratory and expansive, house music (especially during its infancy) was never meant to be taken too seriously. It was (and still is) the musical embodiment of a very specific mood. It is fueled by adrenaline and charged by neural sparks of creativity that can be both feral and robotic. Like all mediums, its growing pains were sometimes evidenced by awkward (and incredibly embarassing) moments (see The Best of House series for a few good examples of these), but there were also shining moments of brilliance, like this three-disc set.

I disagree that this mix should be highly rated if for no other reason than because of its place in house history (unlike cars or stamps, the value of music rarely increases along with its age). However, I will say that many of these twelve-year-old cuts aren't just a testament to the leaps and bounds that house music made during its genesis (thanks in no small part to Sasha & Digweed), but some of them are still very relevant as markers of fine craftsmanship, especially in a genre that is threatened every year with death by dull monotony. This album -- one of the first of its kind to go gold, and single-handedly ensuring the fame of Sasha and Digweed as house music's most trusted ambassadors -- is everything that good club music still wants to be.

Okay, well, not everything. Even the Almighty S & D aren't immune to a little dating. Each of the three discs has patchy moments where the music misfires ("Tranceillusion"), skids on atonal redundancy ("House Stompin'"), or is just plain annoying ("Bombscare"). And for listeners familiar with S & D's latest oeuvre, some of the tunes will definitely sound a mite-bit backward. This is to be expected when you're listening to house music that's over a decade old.

But what's a pleasant surprise are the caramel-smooth progressions and transitions (the "Song For Life" trilogy), the skittery electro-tangles ("Slid"), and the ecstatic, round-house power hits ("Sublime"). Although the discs contain their fair share of crumbling, poorly-aged retro-rhythms, these weak spots are obscured by the lush vibrancy of the rest of the albums.

Sasha and Digweed may have come a long way since 1994, but that doesn't mean their starting point was necessarily a bad place. It had its flaws, its cracks and gaudy mouldings, but -- as this set proves -- their point of origin wasn't something embarrasing which they have since left behind. It was a solid bedrock, a great wide launching pad, that they continue to reinvent in newer and better ways. Fans of the genre and of the artists should buy this album to rediscover the classics that goaded the music into loftier realms; newcomers should buy this album to learn just how timeless even this most modern of musics can still be.

5 out of 5 stars Essential..........2006-10-21

Techno and the whole electronica scene has certainly splintered from its early days with genre after genre and label after label being attached to its many forms and sounds. But it all starts here, really. It was this mix, this year, this scene that blazed the trail for the rise of techno as, dare I say it, popular. Oh, sure, there was techno prior to this but not in a format for mass consumption. It was mostly an "insider" thing with a few hints in the marketplace that it was coming as all scenes do when they hit critical mass.

I was a latecomer to the whole thing having dabbled in some Eon in the early 90s and beginning listening to Moby sometime circa 1994, about the same time as this was released. I first heard John Digweed when I stumbled across his Global Underground Los Angeles mix in 1999. Consuming everything GU I would eventually stumble across this, purchasing a copy from the UK for a pretty penny.

This mix captures a snapshot in time. The opening three tracks with the various remixes of Leftfield instantly set the tone that something special is happening. With singing divas, remixes of artists who are now fairly well known, Moby being one of them, these mixes capture a moment in time, an era, the re-emergence of dance music.

From time to time I will pull this out to listen to it, hoping it doesn't sound cheesy, dated and ridiculous. It never really does. At worst it is sentimental. Though it does show its age (especially some of the diva tunes, an obligatory insert in all mixes of this period, overplayed to the point of parody), this is not in the negative. It still sounds sweet and is a gentle reminder that for as much as techno has "sold out" today (television theme songs, movie soundtracks and commercials) that it still sounds remarkably fresh.

As every classic rocker needs some of the essentials of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd with newer staples such as Metallica, Nirvana and Guns 'n' Roses, anyone who likes techno or DJ mixes needs to get a copy and develop deep roots.

1 out of 5 stars Practically the worst Sasha & Digweed mix ever.......2006-03-07

I've been listening to Sasha and Digweed for a very very long time, and I wanted this Renaissance mix collection after going to the nightclub in the U.K. because of the amazing experiences there. However, I was disturbed when I listened to this 3cd set. Infact it doesn't reflect on anything Sasha has done even before these mixes. I would never have bought this item had I known how horrible it is. While the mixing is good, the track selection is not what I expected, I learned my lesson...

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD for sasha fans.......2006-01-07

If you don't like Sasha and are just getting into him I suggest you try something a bit more current. This CD has been recently remastered and the mixing, production level, and track selection is truly historical but this CD is for people that like Sasha and want to own his classic sets hence the term collectros edition used on the casing. If you are new to Sasha or the genre get involver and then Ibiza and then Paul Oakenfold's tranceport for his take on the Gus Gus track purple which is considered by most people to be one of the most awe-inspiring remixes of all time.

Bottom line: U want it? go for it its pretty impressive from start to finish, featuring the likes of Leftfield, Sasha himself, moby and a tremendous host of others.

Expanded to 10 volumes from the original 7, Timber Records head Joey Gardner's Freestyle's Greatest Beats is a roughly chronological history of the music. Volume 1 scores with freestyle fundamentals from heavy hitters such as TKA, Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and Exposé. This disc is heavy on the classics and features cuts that aren't played as much anymore. Jellybean's "The Mexican," in its original form, blurs the line between dance music and rock; England's Information Society brings some Euro-cool to the Latin hip-hop; and Nayobe's hyperemotional "Please Don't Go" hits the head as hard as the hips. --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars Cassandra .......2007-07-20

This cd is a timeless classic, with artists such as 'Noel,' and 'TKA.' I discoverd Freestyle music not long ago and am fully aware that it was particulary popular in the 80's, appealing to a vast Latian audiance.

This cd is great for anyone who likes 80's dance music. It great to have acsess to such cds as in England the music is often dull. 80's American music is alot more 'up beat' and 'exciting' and this cd is a taste of what was and is missing today!

5 out of 5 stars Great Starter CD for Freestyle fans Silent Morning YES!!!!.......2007-01-10

The first 4 songs are good enough for me with special emphasis on Silent Morning. My favorite song of all time - best memories with this one - even my 4yr old knows this is Papa's song! Make sure you listen to Noel and TKA very LOUD to appreciate the music nuaces and instruments. If you have a system where you can enhance bass etc you will enjoy these their songs even more. I start out listening to OWL to get myself ready for SM and that's when I blow my ears out with the Ipod. The other discs are not as good but still good enough for classics. Get yourself Vol. 2 just for Noel & LLCJ [ no not LL Cool J ] Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam. Vol. 5 for Bad of the Heart -- dope -- and intro to Coro and the synth sounding Dance with me. This is what awesome dance is about. The mere mention of pussycat dolls, spice girls and all other Q'rrap made today makes me sick to my stomach. Remember the first 4 songs are where it's at you will not be sorry. If you want that true old school 80's sound it's here.

5 out of 5 stars Freestyle classics all the way!.......2000-07-01

In the late 80s, early 90s I grew up on this stuff in NYC, clubbing at the likes of The Tunnel, The Underground, Heartthrob, 1018, The World ... (I'm sure all you people not from New York, or from Long Island *grin*, had your own clubs) ... I can guarantee this Freestyle Greatest Beats series is jammed packed with classics. I needn't rehash the contents, since you can easily see the list of songs here on Amazon. But all these artists - Noel, Will to Power, Judy Torres, Cynthia, TKA, Latin Rascals, etc. - bring me right back to the days. I finally found songs I'd wanted for more than 10 years now. What more can I say. You'd better make sure you have thick walls and nobody's home when you play these CDs, because you're going to be pumping it up and swaying to the beats right there in your living room. (I know I do).

5 out of 5 stars DANCE TILL YOU CAN'T DANCE NO MORE!.......1999-10-27

If you enjoyed those unforgettable 80s when freestyle dance music ruled, then don't miss the memories this CD brings back to you.

5 out of 5 stars A Freestyle Collection Must-Have.......1998-08-11

This disc is the first of a 10-disc series that is the definitive collection of Freestyle music. The series features a variety of songs from the most popular artists of the genre, including many hard-to-find classics. All discs include comprehensive liner notes charting the history of Freestyle music. A must-have collection for anyone interested in dance music from the mid-1980s through the early 1990s.

Disc One Highlights: Almost every song on this issue is considered a Freestyle classic. Special mentions go to Sa-Fire's "Don't Break My Heart" and Noel's "Silent Morning."

This volume also contains classics by TKA, The Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Sweet Sensation, Nayobe, Information Society, Judy Torres, Exposé, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs Not Available Anywhere Else!!.......2006-01-28

This one will be short and sweet: A great compilation of hard-to-find dance classics that will get any party moving.

But to comment on reviewers who received CD-Rs: Yes, unfortunately this company (HOT Productions) started to manufacture cd-rs of all their product when they were in litigation and about to go out of business. I got duped, too, on some of their issues, but got my money back from the stores who sold them. The good news is even the cd-rs are mastered from the original tapes, so the sound quality is consistent with the regular glass master factory-pressed cds.

And just to let everyone know, real CDs DO EXIST of these releases and the others, but it will be a crap-shoot to find them, as they were only done at the beginning of the pressings before the company started having financial trouble. (I happen to have many of them, including this compilation). You can tell if you get an original, because they are COLOR SILK-SCREENED, NOT plain silver cds with black printing. (those are the cd-rs) Your best bet would be to avoid any that are "sealed" and buy a used one only. That way you will know what you are getting beforehand.

Hope this helps!

While it's very nice to have long-lost 80s disco/dance/electro tracks by TINA B., CHERI, PHYLLIS NELSON, WEEKS & CO and more on CD format, this collection is tained by the fact that when I finally received it and opened it...I discovered to my horror and disappointment this is a CD-R rather than an authentic SILVER CD!! Where does the label get off charging people full retail price for a CD-R?! C'mon, do the fans & collectors a favor and re-master this and put it out on a REAL CD!! Very misleading; but I'll still keep my copy, as these tracks are quite hard to find and strictly OOP!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!!!.......2002-05-08

Alright, here it is. There are many compilations out there that has a great selection of hits. Still, if the songs in the collection are a bunch three minute short versions; let's face it, the collection isn't all that. Hey, I was out there in the clubs shaking my booty right along with everybody else. I remember all those great dance-jams that seemed to go on forever (and you were glad because you hoped those songs and that moment would never end). My point is that if the compilations with songs from that era which are coming out now are not the full length extended versions then it's basically a waste of time and money.

Now, all I have of this series is volume I, II & IV. So, regarding this series, that's all I have to go by. Still, if you're like me and is looking for a disco-compilations of not only just a great collection of hits but also the full length extended versions of them then this is and another compilation series called "THE BIG 12 INCHES" is it.

4 out of 5 stars This is a pretty good one........2000-08-31

I got excited with the S.O.S. band and the Whispers. They are so hot. Overall this is a pretty good CD.

        5 out of 5 stars Hidden gem.......2006-05-18

This cd really suprised me. I think this was only the second release by Dangers under anything else but MBM and it was a mixed set of OTHER artists' stuff. It was around the same time Crystal Method produced Community Service which I really liked as well so I gave it a shot. It starts off decent but by track 4 the album blends very well together. When I first heard the cd, though, it was at a warehouse music which is now closed but the guy there was awesome and would play the goods on release dates. I heard the Deepsky track on the PA and knew instantly it was MBM but also knew instantly it was Stargazer and I knew the whole cd would own. Which it does. Its so hard to find now, what's up with that? For the first year of its release it was overstocked... not it doesn't even exist in inventories or records anywhere. Shame. Enjoy!

        4 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool.......2005-06-05

Jack Dangers is good at remixes. Good enough that almost any musician could benefit from a remix by Dangers. Just the same, I was surprised by my reaction to some of the tracks on this album. Let's just say that remixes of more well-known songs weren't necessarily better than remixes of more obscure songs. His best stuff takes indie and obscure material and blows it sky-high with Meat-Beat style synths, bass and beats. This may all sound a bit willy-nilly, so let me say this-- yes, fans of Jack Dangers and Meat Beat Manifesto are sure to enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Remarkably solid and diverse remix collection by Dangers.......2002-10-07

A great overview of Dangers's work on other people's music - which is so extensive that no more than a slim sampling could be squeezed into one disc. They did a good job choosing. The first three tracks make the listener feel at home, all of them very well known efforts. It gets more interesting after that, with the spotlight on great but more obscure efforts for the most part (The Shamen and David Byrne may have lapsed back into that category anyway). Dangers' ability to choose interesting subject matter contributes almost as much to this album as his actual talent as a mixer and producer. The obvious risk on this sort of project is of an uneven selection, but this collection is one of the most consistently solid I've seen (with one very unfortunate exception, Freddy Fresh - you will get in the habit of skipping track 8). The appearances by David Bowie, Deepsky Stargazer, Atomic Babies, Banco de Gaia, and Papa Brittle are worth the purchase price alone, delivering an amazingly diverse collection of driven madness tied loosely together by the recognizable drum-n-bass settings and dissonant collage mixtures of Jack Dangers. Bowie's surreal emoting starts to shimmer unnervedly under Dangers's hand; Deepsky and Atomic Babies deliver a pounding electronic dance experience; the Shamen is rescued from its post-Move Any Mountain overmellow rut and made relevant again; Banco de Gaia's sitar meanders down an unpredictable path through an insatiably funky groove; and Papa Brittle is perhaps the most original track, with cagey atmospherics dressing up a mantra-like alternation of rhythmic reggae derivative and a chanted chorus, while a high-flying counterpoint offsets addictive injections of bass. Any fan of Jack Dangers/Meat Beat should thoroughly enjoy this offshoot, along with any fan of the subject artists who digs the remix and is looking for more like it.
