Now in its fifth decade, the James Bond film series has outlived the Cold War concerns that spawned it--not to mention the acting careers of a Sean Connery replacement or three. Indeed, its musical sensibility has often been the cycle's most reliable artistic link across the decades. While the arrival of latest Bond Daniel Craig inspired the producers to forge a long-overdue prequel plot gambit ("How Bond became Bond") for their Casino Royale redux, composer David Arnold's fourth Bond score helps bridge the past while subtly pushing it ever forward. The album's absence of a pop-song title single (though the melody of the Arnold/Chris Cornell-composed "You Know My Name" is interpolated into the underscore) isn't terribly shocking, considering the waning fortunes of recent efforts in the genre. But other traditions continue, with the full-bodied score here subtly infusing the elegant spirit of original Bond maestro John Barry into Arnold's own mix of brooding tension-builders and the dynamic, brassy rhythms of his signature action cues. The latter even gingerly cross over into the synth-charged club milieu of Eric Serra's GoldenEye score, a sensibility that was reviled as sacrilege by Bond aficionados a decade ago but that's since become a staple of mainstream film scoring. Arnold brings it all full circle with the muscular coda "The Name's Bond...," a lovingly authentic, barely revamped workout of the epochal Barry/Monty Norman theme that anchors the series to glories past. --Jerry McCulley

Great Music that matches a great Movie. Able to picture the movie with the music. The Bass notes in some of the songs are great. Good CD

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, but missing the key........2007-05-18

What genius decided to exclude "You Know My Name"? This is the first Bond Soundtrack that I know of that does not include the title song. Over the years, the Bond soundtracks have always been about 2 things for me: the Bond theme (and how it's woven into the overall soundtrack), and the title song (and how pumped up it gets you for the rest of the movie). There have been some great ones, and not so great ones, but no matter what, they were always on the soundtrack, and I could identify the movie from the title song. "You Know My Name", imho, was one of the better ones, and to exclude it is a travesty.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling James Bond music.......2007-05-10

Once again british composer David Arnold give an excellent composition for James Bond

4 out of 5 stars A different take on Bond.......2007-05-06

David Arnold's score for "Casino Royale" is good, but very different. The score is not filled with cues from the traditional James Bond music from over the years. Instead it has lots of action and dramatic themes to replace those. The typical Bond theme doesn't come into play until the last track on the CD, aptly entitled: "The Name's Bond...James Bond." Arnold's previous score from "Die Another Day" was good, but this one is definitely better. "African Rundown" and "Miami International" are definitely the highlights on the album while "Dirty Martini" and "The End of the Aston Martin" are also shorter good tracks. Overall the album is great, there are just a few tracks that don't quite live up to the rest of the album. But if you're a fan of film scores, this one is definitely on the list as a good one.

3 out of 5 stars What? No title song!?!.......2007-04-26

I've been a fan of Bond soundtracks for a long time now, and still have the LPs from the first 13 Bond movies. When I went to buy the soundtrack from Casino Royale, something told me to check the song list...and I couldn't believe it! They left off "You Know My Name!" I can only attribute this to greed or selfishness on someone's part. I was blown away by both the title song and the score. They were original, rich, and really added to the film. Unfortunatey, I just can't justify $14.99 for the soundtrack without getting "You Know My Name" and the end title music. Too bad!

4 out of 5 stars Casino movie's thematic compilation.......2005-08-09

Great choice of background music which helps set the tone and mood of the various scenes of movie. As the movie time line spans a number of years and genres of music, the choices were timely and evocative. The compilation can be used as a backdrop for entertaining guests during dinner party at home or low key gathering of friends. Selections have great variety and represents good cross section of American pop and contemporary music.

5 out of 5 stars Best song compilation soundtrack out there. Period........2004-12-13

From jazzy to rock & roll tunes, this is by far the best song compilation soundtrack I know of, and I have listened to quite a lot of soundtracks in my life.

A stylish movie gets a stylish soundtrack, and while some tunes are missing from this soundtrack, one has to commend the creators of this OST for putting 31 beautiful songs, capping an almost 2 hour listen. It does cost about double the price of regular soundtracks but it's worth every penny.

With Louis Prima, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Fleetwood Mac, Harry Nilsson, B.B. King, Otis Redding and many many other great artists of the golden years, one can have timeless joy every time this compilation goes in the CD player.

While it is a bit pricey, it is thoroughly recommended to anyone who can enjoy some good old jazz and rock & roll. Simply a wonderful collection of songs.

4 out of 5 stars This soundtrack hits the jackpot!.......2003-06-25

There is no doubt this will remind you of numerous scenes in the film, but one doesn't need to see the film to enjoy all these selections. This is quite an eclectic double disc, and a good representation of the era. Great songs from "The Moody Blues", "Roxy Music", "Devo", and "Dean Martin", among many others. There's also a number of songs you will recognize, but maybe not by name. This is a pleasant change from all of the modern day "cookie cutter" soundtacks that are around. So whether you're looking to complement the movie, or just listen to a good mix of music, check out "Casino". It's a safe bet.

4 out of 5 stars Virtuoso performance by a jazz/fusion master.......2003-12-31

Al's credentials as a master guitarist are unassailable. While this may not be his best work overall, the uninitiated can count on dazzling speed combined with crystalline clarity. If you've never heard Al's work, the closest comparison might be Carlos Santana's jazz albums, without the pop/rock influence. The production is extremely clean and polished, and the arrangements are very tight, so jazz enthusiasts who like their music warm and loose and mellow may be disappointed here. That said, no serious aficionado of jazz fusion guitar will want to miss this recording.

The opening one-two punch of "Egyptian Danza" and "Chasin' the Voodoo" is probably a mistake. Not that these are bad songs, but they're just too similar - both feature fast-paced, relentlessly hard-driving rhythm tracks that back Al's most frenetic melody lines. Actually, these two pieces are my personal favorites, but on first listening they sounded too much alike, always a danger for instrumentalists. Next us is "Dark Eye Tango" which has a welcome slow groove that has Al's guitar singing a melody rather than screaming it, but a few minutes in the pace picks up and we're tearing along again. So while these really are three terrific tracks, they do leave the impression that Al's just a one-trick pony.

Having shot his wad so early on, the rest of this recording is a bit of a letdown. Al covers Chick Corea's "Senor Mouse" again, and the closer, "Casino" is eminently forgettable, but he redeems himself with the acoustic showcase "Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars". While maintaining the blazing energy levels of "Danza" and "Voodoo" in an acoustic format, this song suite shows Al's command of a breadth of styles that is not hinted at on the rest of this disk.

It would have been smart to re-arrange the playing order of the tracks on this CD, and a good slow number (which I'm not normally a big fan of) would have been a welcome addition here. But the playing is superb, and there's plenty of punch in at least four of the six compositions presented. Jazz/fusion guitarists and percussionists will find this one particularly appealing.

4 out of 5 stars Took ages, but I finally got into it.......2002-08-05

I bought Dimeola's Elegant Gypsy album and got it into relatively quickly despite its technicality. With Casino it was much more difficult. I listened to it many, many times and I was convinced that it was a bad album. Then one day I played it again and I finally figured out what the hell he was doing! I guess that I was just in the right frame of mind at the time. The thing is, there was nothing at all wrong with Dimeola as a musician, composer or anything else. I think that the problem was with me. His music got so complex and fasat at times that I just couldn't get it. Even when I did get some parts, it would be followed by a complex segment and I would lose my concentration and it would go right over my head. Maybe its best for some fans not to play Dimeola for long periods of time at a time because it can be too much to take in sometimes.

For the record, I'm not someone unused to complex music. My favourite bands include Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull and so on, so something like Casino should be right up my street. As it turned out, it was and I am glad for it.

As for the tracks themselves, the best were Egyptian Danza (this was the easiest to get into), Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars(the second and third movement are especially excellent) and the title track.

I still don't really like Chasin' The Voodoo, Dark Eye Tango, Senor Mouse much, but maybe with a few more listens?

4 out of 5 stars Re-Review.......2002-02-17

I listened some more to this CD, gave it a year to sink in, and found that it is more enjoyable after repeated listenings. I really like the tune "Dark Eyed Tango", especially when the percussion starts getting funky and does that bouncing effect in the speakers, and Al blazes through it with gracefulness, it's just very cool. "Chasin the Voodoo" and "Fantasia Suite" are still my favorites, but I found that this is better music than I had thought it to be at the time I wrote my last review for it. Very good music, there's a reason why it sold so well. I think that this CD would be a good starting point for rock guitar fans to start out into jazz, the latin beats and the solos and drumming are very accessible to people who are familiar with Santana and other groups from the 70's. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Winner............2001-03-08

I've looked at these other reviews, and i'm just wondering, "How can you guys think this is so good?" First of all, it was his biggest attempt to go commercial: that's right, Al Di Meola. And it sold like crazy too, I think it went gold at least, which is great for a jazz record. I just don't really care for it as a whole. I really tried to, though, let me say this much. However, the music is not up to the quality found on, well basically every other one of the albums, except maybe "Scenario". So much filler here.....background music, you can read a book while listening to music like "Senor Mouse" and "Casino"....at least I could. The stand-out tracks are "Chasin' the Voodoo" (so similar to a Miles Davis title!!) and "Fantasia Suite". Actually, those two are killer! The playing is only part of how great it is: there's not really any shortage of guitar playing here, it just sounds so slick and polished to me. I'm not speaking for Al, but I bet if you got it out of him, he'd admit that this is not a good album as a whole. Good thing he stopped going commercial too...his album "Kiss my Axe" is a middle-finger to smooth jazz radio!! Go and buy any other Al album....."Splendido Hotel" is so much better than "Casino".

5 out of 5 stars Guitar God.......2000-10-05

Al D is awesome. I was introduced to this album when I was getting my music (percussion) degree in the early 80's. The first time I heard it, I was in awe at Al's speed, melodic interpretation, use of modes and abnormal scalar patterns, and his use of staccato. If you don't understand music theory, you might not fully appreciate his genius, but you'll be dazzled and enthralled by his talent and the quality of this music.

Casino and Elegant Gypsy Suite are his two best albums. I bet I've listened to Casino at least 10,000 times. I know every single note played by every instrument, of every song. I'll never get tired of listening to it.

Steve Gadd, being one of of the greatest drummers ever, compliments Al wonderfully on this album.

I'd love to see today's "guitarists" even try to touch some of the rips Al pulls off. That would be hilarious. No one will ever be this great again. If you appreciate good guitar music, you've got to have this CD.

Al D and Bach, the two greatest musical geniuses in history.

The Austin Powers series was hardly the first to spoof James Bond. At the very height of '60s Bondmania, this sprawling, big-budget parody turned the trick, complete with an all-star cast of multiple, dueling Bonds and a bubbly romp of a musical score by Burt Bacharach. Indeed, this swingin' slice of '60s pop kitsch seems to have inspired much of Mike Myers's own later Powers musical tack. Anchored by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass' jaunty main theme and the Brazilian jazz inflections of Dusty Springfield's sublime interpretation of Bacharach's evergreen "The Look of Love," the collection bounds merrily from blaring orchestral action flourishes through Bacharach's own savory takes on jazz-pop and musical send-ups of everything from vaudeville to international pomp and circumstance. It's a dizzy, lighthearted delight from first track to last. --Jerry McCulley

Great spoof on the James Bond Movies. Woody Allen and Peter Sellers are at their comic best.

5 out of 5 stars CASINO ROYALE.......2007-06-07

In reply to the question from KIRSTEN J. WALSTEDT, I have both CD versions of Varese Sarabande's CASINO ROYALE. Both versions have the same 13 tracks, but the 2nd version has two major improvements over the first: 1. It has far superior audio quality---which justifies buying it even if you already have the 1st version. 2. The 2nd comes with an informative booklet with narrative about the movie and the soundtrack.

Also, I prefer the cd cover of the 1st version which is the original poster art for the movie, so I inserted it into the 2nd version's jewel case---which gives me the best of both worlds.

As for the score itself, I think the Oscar-nominated "The Look of Love" is the best love theme ever written for a film and was wrongly not awarded an Oscar. Mike Myers has said the song inspired him to develop the Austin Powers movies and he pays tribute to the song by using it in his first Austin Powers movie in the hot tub scene with Lotta Fagina.

This 2nd version cd is definitely a must-have for those seeking the absolute best in film music.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Soundtracks!.......2007-03-08

Burt Bacharach and Hal David are a great songwriting team. Burt writes extremely melodic melodies and Hal David writes memorable, to the point lyrics. Casino Royale is one of my favorite soundtracks because it has catchy, fun songs on it. My favorite track is "The Look Of Love" sung by the sultry voice of Dusty Springfield. It doesnt get any better that this. Listen to the lyrics, then listen to the sexy sax solo near the end of the song. This is a heavy duty make out song. Play it while you're having cocktails with your love partner and you'll be kissing in no time. Everytime I hear that song I think of the scene in the movie with Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress shot in slow motion through a large fish tank. Peter Sellers is one of my favorite comedic actors and Ursula Andress...well, she's unbelievably hot! The title song on the CD is performed by one of my favorite artists Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. This is a fun, uplifting, goodtime soundtrack to a great light hearted James Bond movie with other great actors like Orson Welles and David Niven, directed by John Huston. I also recommend another Burt Bacharach soundtrack CD, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

This imaginative and fulfulling soundtrack is full of whimiscal but serious music that recalls a magical time. Even though Casino Royal is not a classic bond film, the theme is as memorable as the classic bond theme.

Yep, this is the band that did that midtempo cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young," played incessantly on "The O.C." But don't hold that against these Australian indie-rockers. On their third album, the members of Youth Group once again work with producer Wayne Connolly (the Vines, You Am I), who helps them polish up their sound and showcase their airtight melodies. Despite the occasional outburst of guitars on tracks like "Catch and Kill" and "Shadowland," the group mostly delivers a set of fuss-free tunes that don't so much demand your attention as pleasantly jangle along, doing their best to make your day better. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Youth Group are one of the best-known unknown bands on the indie scene, after their cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young" became a staple on "The O.C." last spring and one of the most downloaded tracks on iTunes, while earning them a #1 single in their native Australia. This release showcases their growing songwriting ambition on tracks like "Sorry", with its intricate Smiths-like guitar interplay, while "Catch And Kill" finds the band exploring their Velvets/Stooges side. "Casino Twilight Dogs", already gold in Australia, is the album that'll solidify Youth Group's growing status in the US.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Fantastic Album From Youth Group.......2007-07-23

I've just picked this fantastic album up and it's blown me away. Why these guys aren't bigger has totally dumbfounded me, either that or people simply can't hear good music when its right in front of them.

I've only been a fan of Youth Group for two years, but have totally fell in love with them. This is probably because of the resemblence to my favourite band James in terms of Toby Martin's vocals and word intonation plus some of the music. Other similarities I would say are with Crowded House, Ash and The Charlatans.

This album slightly differs from the previous in that it seems slightly more restrained with more concentration on musical depth, this gives the album a more consistent even feel. I particularly like Sorry (very very Jamesian here) with its Larry Gott-esque guitar sound (check out early James material for this), Catching and Killing, Under The Underpass and the wonderful (i)piece de resitance(i) Start Today Tomorrow. Again like James they handle songs at low-tempi extraordinarily well and are extremely beautiful in composition and sound. Also included is their cover of Forever Young that appeared on the O.C (apparantly popular over here in the UK)

I'd go as far as saying they are one of the best bands that have come out of this decade and deserve to be massive. I hope they can come over and play live in the UK soon. I urge anyone reading this to give them a try and you will soon fall in love with this brilliant band.

5 out of 5 stars Please don't turn mainstream!!!.......2007-04-05

I don't usually buy into soundtracks from tv, so YouthGroups cover of 'Forever Young' made no impression on me. I simply HATE covers of 80's..(see 311's cover of Love Song) But upon first listen of Casino Twilight Dogs, I didn't think it was as great as Skeleton Jar. However, after some play, you can't resist Toby Martin's vocals which are as soothing as they ever have been. On a string, TJ and Chrismas windows are notable. This CD pleases YouthGroup's fans, just don't expect to hear it on the next "Now thats what I call music" cd for all you Mischa Barton fans :)

3 out of 5 stars It's no Skeleton Jar.......2007-03-09

This release by Youth Group sees a more diverse use of instruments and production styles than their last release,Skeleton Jar, but the lyrics aren't as powerful or evocative. The CD lacks the strength of tracks like "Shadow Land" and "Lillian Lies" because less attention is paid to rythmn and melody. The charming, stripped-down simplicity is sacrificed for a bigger sound, and a more generalized approach. Although Skeleton Jar was no major feat of innovation, but worked beautifully within it's boundaries, this album feels like a step backwards; in the direction of a snow patrol sound-alike.

It does, however, earn its 3 stars with bright spots like "Under the Underpass", "Daisy Chains", and "Sicily". The cover of "Forever Young" is pretty good as well. They all lack the striking, simple grandeur of previous releases and leave the listener desperate to revist older, more inspiring tracks. Hopefully the next album won't be quite as laden with mediocrity, and hopefully it will be a return to the compelling depth this band is capable of.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most surprising titles of 2007 so far............2007-02-05

Into indie music? Casino Twilight Dogs upends recent releases by The Shins and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, to release one of the best records in 07' so far. While they don't exactly reinvent the indie rock music scene, CTD is easily one of the most listenable titles thus far. Well "Forever Young" is the cover song on the OC that burned up Itunes (and led me right to this CD), "On a String", "Sorry" , and "Under the Underpass" are just as catchy, meaningful, and distinctly indie to keep you coming back for more. Well a few throwaway tracks are found, The Youth Group is on track to blow up ala Death Cab For Cutie and The Arcade Fire with this beautifully haunting album. Don't sleep on it. If you are still up in the air on buying it, download their version of "Forever Young". It is easily the best yet, the perfect song that sounds modern and vintage at the same time.

Album Description

From 1994-2000, At The Drive-In held the attention of music fans and critics alike. During their career, they released three albums and numerous EPs. You can hear their influence today on so many releases across the rock genre. Members have gone on to form The Mars Volta, Sparta, and various other projects. "Displaying an earnest intensity befitting pre-irony U2, At The Drive-In are an exhilarating and exhausting experience--the sight of five young men ever pushing against and beyond the limits of physical and emotional endurance with crusader zeal"--Rolling Stone. In early 2005, look for the "Anthology" CD of greatest hits, exclusive unreleased tracks, rarities, covers, videos, interviews, and exclusive live footage.

5 out of 5 stars Music/Listen/Repeat.......2006-08-07

At The Drive In have long been praised as one of the most innovative and extraordinary groups in music. However there was a time in their career when they were just finding their footing and growing into the monster they would become. The trial stage was "Acrobatic Tenement", but with this, their sophomore album "In/Casino/Out", At The Drive In displayed what they have been known for, for years now : Amazing song-writing. If you're not familiar with the early stages that the band went through to get to where they were, then this is of the utmost importance to listen to. Not just that, but it is even more evidence as to why At The Drive In was easily one of the best bands of the last 10 years, and one of the most inspirational and original groups to emerge in music.

"Alpha Centauri" opens the album in dizzying fashion, giving way to shattering guitar chords, frantic drumming, and a soulful performance by front man Cedric. Jim and Omar play off one another with interesting (and most impressive) guitar structures and progressions, that at most times will leave your jaw on the floor. However they are only complimented by Paul's rumbling bass lines and Tony's outlandish drumming. And this is just the first song. Don't get comfortable, because as quickly as "Alpha Centauri" ends, the jarring, schizophrenic "Chanbara" kicks in showcasing its wild yells, interesting drumming and excellent lyrics. You can hear a bit of Mars-Volta-ish style vocals during the verse, which was a sign of things that would come in the future after At The Drive In's break-up. But just as quickly as the band can floor you with the powerful tracks, driving numbers like "Napoleon Solo" and "Hourglass" show how diverse they can get at the drop of a hat. However I wouldn't say this is a difficult listen at all. "Hulahoop Wounds", "For Now.. We Toast" and "Transatlantic Foe" are all upbeat and accessible, but they are easily balanced out by more aggressive pieces like "Shaking Hand Incision" and "A Devil Among The Tailors." There's such a wide range of dynamics and writing on here, it's hard to get bored with anything the band presents.

Of all the 11 tracks to be found on the album though, "Lopsided" has got to be the absolute best. I will go as far as to say it's the best song the band has ever written. Now of course I hold a certain bias since it is both the first song I ever heard by the band and my personal favorite. Like all the songs found on the disc, the lyrics are absolutely stunning (Cedric is really one of the greatest writers in music) and the musicianship is unparalleled. Furthermore it's probably the most strikingly different tune that the band has ever recorded. While every song on the record is an instant classic in and of itself, "Lopsided" truly set the standard for what I held At The Drive In too.

After all is said and done, there is not a single moment on this cd that is anything less than enjoyable. While this album is not considered as great as their final album "Relationship Of Command", (I have no idea why though) "In/Casino/Out" is really a necessary purchase for all fans of the band, and indie-rock/post-hardcore in general. It was really the biggest stepping stone in the band's discography, and if it lead to great products like "Vaya" and "Relationship Of Command," it would seem like there is little to complain about. While "Acrobatic Tenement" was a bit pre-mature, "In/Casino/Out" was truly when this band become one of the innovators in modern music. Easily deserves the endless mass of praise.

4 out of 5 stars arguably their best.......2006-05-18

Most ATDI fans I meet say that this album or relationship of command are their best albums. I would have to say this is, in my opinion, their best album. The energy and emotion throughout each and every song is clearly heard. Acrobatic Tenement was a good start and it had the energy and emotion but what that album lacked was the abstract lyrical content of Cedric and some polish on the music. The production quality is better, the music is cleaner or more focused and it is obvious at how much the band matured from the Hell Paso ep in '94 to this album in '98. The music and lyrics are not as basic on this album as they were on previous work. El Gran Orgo was not a bad ep but you can tell with a couple members leaving after the first full length there was not as much that could have stood out on that effort. I think this is what they were looking to do. Relationship maybe a bit more accessible and the music shows even more talent for them than this album but this album just captures the essence of what this band was for me. This is the album that really got me into ATDI. To me there is not one bad track on this album. If you are new to ATDI definitely pick this one up, it will be worth it. And to the reviewer below me, some of the greatest voices over the years have sung way out of tune. Bob Dylan, Lou Reed....just to name a couple, and they are heavy influences on lots of people. Out of tune adds to the effect of this band cause it was not meant to be a flawless album. This band was not meant to be polished, they displayed the raw energy, confusion, emotion of youth. I really don't think people care how Cedric's voice sounds, its the emotion behind it. Plus you should go pick up a Mars Volta album and hear Cedric wail on those albums. Than tell me he is not a good front man.

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing.......2005-07-13

Well I've heard their other two major cds and this one never really stood out to me before. I saw they had releases a greatest hits compilation and listened to one of the songs on it from In-Casino-Out and found it to be very good. So I gave the rest of the cd a try and was just blown away by the incredibleness of it. Evey song has that tight sound to it, its just rock thats perfectly crafted. It's fun to listen to, I hear they had an amazing live show and the energy the music itself makes just lends to it. I feel like I'm right there watching them while listening to this masterpiece. My favorite songs are Hulahoop wounds and Lopsided. Overall though the cd doesn't have a bad song on it and is well worth the listen.

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE COME BACK AND SAVE MUSIC!!!.......2005-04-08

At the Drive-In really needs to come back and save music. I was 11 when I first saw them..they blew my mind. They instantly became my favorite live show ever. For anyone who never got to see them live, I'm sorry. I've seen the Mars Volta and Sparta live and it's nothing compared to what ATDI had. This record is the best work they ever did. I can't even suggest any band that they are in the vain of. They were their own and to compare them to any other band would be an insult. I just hope they come back together at some point and save the music industry...It needs help. K

5 out of 5 stars If you can't get the best of us now..........2005-04-02

This is a really fun cd! The band's second full length album, this one feels a small step up in maturity and songwriting from the band's previous, "Acrobatic Tenement." It's slower in some places, but faster in others, and the playing in general is better.

Unlike AT, this album doesnt open very well. Alpha Centauri is okay. Its fast, kind of dissonant, but in a cool way. Chanbara is just ugly, I think, but the percussion is cool and it grows on you. Things pick up at track 3, Hulahoop Wounds, a really catchy, well written song with awesome lyrics. Track 4, Napoleon Solo, is slow and haunting. The way it builds is brilliant and the bridge is one of the most beautiful things ever. Track 5, Pickpocket has some really awesome guitar playing and is very catchy. Its short, but not as short as some of the tracks on the last album (like Star Slight). For Now, We Toast is a great pop tune. The verse is really catchy, and while a little irritating, the chorus is too. The lyrics are about digging a tunnel out of a prison. It's really cool. A Devil Among The Tailors is my least favorite on the album. I think its ugly and boring. The dissonance that the band often uses is used too much here, and it just sounds bad. However, things pick up with Shaking Hand Incision, which is intense and complex, one of the best songs on the album. The drummer is really awesome here. Then comes Lopsided, a powerful, creepy ballad about some sort of mystery with a ship. I don't get it, but its really cool. Hourglass is a radiohead-esque lo-fi ballad which starts out great and keeps getting better, until its perfect ending, where it gets distorted. The last track on the album, Transatlantic Foe, is in my opinion the band's greatest song. It's beautiful, upbeat, and the perfect closer for the album. The lyrics make no sense but I love them.

Fans of punk/rock/emo, or anything else really, should own this. It's a great CD! And while you're at it, check out The Mars Volta, which has the singer and lead guitarist from this band. They're even better!

5 out of 5 stars The Gang's all here..........2007-03-13

When Casino Lights came out in '82 I was 18 years old. I'd already been a fan of Sanborn, the Yellow Jackets Randy Crawford, Marcus Miller, Larry Carlton and a big fan of Al Jarreau's for 6 years. So when they got together for this baby, I was blown away and still is. Hats off to Claud Nobs for putting this together with Warner Bros finest talent at that time. I highly recommend this album. I'm 43 now and Casino Lights is still by far, my favorite "live recorded" album.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Mainieri - vibes!.......2004-07-04

Love this album, but the highlight for me on this album is Mainieri's solo on "Theme from "Love is not enough"". This is worth the price alone! And of course Sanborn's playing is, as always, superb.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2000-07-11

I cannot find the words to express how much I enjoy this recording. The technical ability of the artists is amazing and being a musician myself, I can certainly appreciate how demanding some of the tracks are! With two of the worlds best vocalists in Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford, this album will appeal to soul music fans as well as jazz maniacs. The highlight for me is the Yellowjackets 'Monmouth College Fight Song' which I have covered for many years in my own band and finally I own my own copy - Priceless!

5 out of 5 stars Mostly Smooth, NEVER Dull.......2000-07-06

This is a WONDERFUL album. Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford really click as a duet pair on the three songs they sing together. Yellowjackets serve as a top notch backing band for most of the pieces on the album, and the tune they headline, Monmouth College Fight Song, is great loads of fun. Throughout the album, the musisians are really together and feeding off one another in the fine tradition of great jazz. The killer song here, tho, is Randy Crawford's cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". Probably the finest rendition of this song every recorded, it'll raise the hairs on your neck and land on you with every bit of emotion and feeling for humankind that Lennon put into that piece. "Casino Lights" is easily one of the best recordings in our music collection.

5 out of 5 stars this is the best of the best........1999-10-13

From the opening note of Bob James's lyrically romantic "Mind Games" to the closing jam on Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man," the Casino Lights are shining bright. George Duke, Kenny Garrett, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, and Gabriela Anders constitute an awesome smooth-jazz lineup here, with Anders's smoky harmonies shining especially alongside Duke on the title track from his classic album Brazilian Love Affair and on her silky hot "Fire of Love." Even trumpet honker Braun, musically way over his head in this company, manages to push the smooth-jazz envelope. The first Casino Lights album, recorded on the same Montreux Jazz Festival stage and released in 1989, was a vocal heavy effort that pales in comparison with this recording, dominated as it is by crafty instrumentalists playing a bit of inspired one-upmanship on each other with the listener turning out to be the winner. The superlatives abound, from the packaging to the selections, which include covers of Ronnie Laws's "Always There," Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time," and Fourplay doing a tour de force on Miles Davis's "Four." One of the top contemporary-jazz albums of the year. --Mark Ruffin

It's Boney James, Rick Braun, Kirk Whalen, Gabriela Anders, Fourplay et al at their best in a live setting. I also recommend the original Casino Lights (1982) with Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford et al. If you can find it, you'll like this one as much as the current release.

4 out of 5 stars Took me back.......2007-01-06

I remember eagerly staying awake for the premier of this series when I was nine and being glued to the screen. This CD awoke lots of memories, all of them good. It's got me humming the old tunes all over again.

The CD took a small hit in my view as I actually prefer the original version of the opening them to the slightly different arrangement found here, but the rest of the tracks are more than fine. If you at all like the original version of Galactica, I think you would find it hard to go wrong with this.

3 out of 5 stars Great Score, But Bad Remaster.......2005-09-02

I would give 5 stars for excellent music, but have to give only 3 stars for a terrible remaster. It sounds like someone turned the Treble all the way up and turned the Bass down to zero! It has a very thin, metalic sound to it. Also, the reverb is way over done, as the other reviewers have mentioned. It's to the point where things are so blended together that you can't distinguish the individual instruments. My original vinyl record is better sound quality then this (if you overlook the clicks or pops). I would recommend the June 29, 1999 re-recording with Stu and the Royal Orchestra over this one. On the re-recording the horns blast through loud and clear and the bass blows you out of your seat. You can hear every instrument very clearly as if you are sitting right in front of the orchestra. The music is fantastic and I think the Battlestar Galactica theme is one of the best ever written. Also, the Exploration theme and Base Star (Imperious Leader) theme are amazing.

    4 out of 5 stars At last...........2005-06-10

It's strange-- just a few days ago, I was rifing through some old stuff from my childhood (old toys, a pile of very old Starlog Magazines)and noticed an ad in a Starlog for this in its old LP format, back when the show was actually on-air. I remember being a little kid and wishing I could send in for it.

Well, fast forward to yesterday, and I'm rifing through various cd soundtracks in my local cd/dvd wherehouse/bonanza/free-for-all store, and there it was. And by God, it was in cd format! And yes, it was ORIGINAL! Not re-performed by some Scottish Orchestra a couple of years ago! Immediately, it was in my greedy hands, helplessly going along with me to my home.

First off, this cd has liner notes. It's not just flimsy repros of the front and back of the old LP. Glen Larson, Stu Phillips, and Richard Hatch all pitch in with recollections about the show, with Phillips's being the most memorable (John Williams coming by to listen to the theme to see if any Star Wars was in there, in case Lucasfilm wanted to sue).

The sound quality is great, no hiss or tininess. The only gripe I have is that the strings sound a little too "smooth." Don't know if that makes sense, but they sound a little too reverbed, concert-hallish. But hey, if that's all I can come up with to complain, then this is a winner!

Relive the memories, in a format that you can play again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Twenty-six years on, it still stirs the blood!.......2004-11-22

Some people may think of Battlestar Galactica as a hokey show that sums up the era of disco, I don't happen to be one of them however!

One thing most people can agree on whether they be a fan or not, is that the theme to Battlestar Galactica is one of the most memorable of TV themes!

Here you get the pieces that went with the first episode that was broadcast - Saga of a Star World, but many of the themes pop up again further along in the series.

The score is a big score for TV, played by the LA Philharmonic no less, and in my humble opinion, composer Stu Phillips's finest work.

    5 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack.......2004-08-10

If I was asked who has the best soundtrack,Galactica or Star Wars,it would be a tie.I especially like the track Red Nova on the Galactica soundtrack.I listen to samples of the new Galactica soundtrack and so far so good. There is a question being asked about the rivalry between the two sci-fi epics of Galactica and Star Wars. When it comes to the music, both are good. Now if George Lucas could come up with better material of what he used in the Phantom Menance and Attack of the Clones and The space battles between the Colinial Empire and the Cylons increases in the future episodes.
