Earth is another in pianist Peter Kater's introspective four-disc series of ambient chamber works, The Elements Series, also incorporating Water, Fire, and Air. Of the four, Earth is the most organic and folkloric, with Richard Hardy playing bamboo and Native American flutes on several tracks. But the disc also employs synthesizers and the only programmed rhythms of the series with gentle shakers and hand percussion. Earth evokes a pastoral landscape with song titles based on the seasons, making it a concept album within a concept album. "Summer" is light and airy and "Autumn" is shaded in romantic colors. "Spring" is almost country, while "Winter" takes on a darker hue with synthesizer ambiences calling up a chilled landscape. Guitarist Mike Hamilton dominates much of this album, picking out melodies on overdubbed acoustic guitar. While the other CDs in the series have a contemplative tone, Earth almost gets heroic on tracks like "Celestine." As a pianist and composer, Peter Kater can lapse into lounge-jazz and romantic piano idioms, and he kisses that terrain at times on Earth, but there is a new austerity heard in this series that serves him well, putting him on the right side of the sentimental/sublime divide. --John Diliberto

Album Description

"[Peter Kater] brings together tribal grooves, chamber settings, desert atmospheres, sensual melodies and ethereal spaces ….weaving it all together with rich keyboard orchestrations"

Twice Grammy-nominated pianist Peter Kater brings you the first of four brand new releases in the Elements Series: Earth.

Elements Series: Earth is lush and bountiful, reverberating with the sacred pulse of the earth. Imbued with gentle rhythms and melodies, luscious strings and a profound silence, the music carries Peter's soulful compositions straight to the heart of the listener.

5 out of 5 stars The Earth Moved ... in Peace.......2007-03-20

A truly relaxing CD. Lovely as background music, but it doesn't hurt to actually listen to it and be aware of the soothing progression of chords and melody shades. The moods of the seasons are graphically described, and the arrangements flow one into the other. What I also especially appreciate is the fact that the selections follow each other without much of a pause in between. Even a 3-second pause between numbers would have been too noticeable and therefore disruptive. That is not the case with this CD, as with the other CDs in the Elements series. Beautifully crafted, with a depth of feeling without being overly sentimental or romantic. A relief to listen to, a source of quiet excitement.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-10-05

"Earth" is one of four CDs in Peter Kater's "Elements Series," and features Kater on piano and keyboards, Mike Hamilton on guitars, and Richard Hardy on flutes and saxophone. The music is ambient and ethereal, and the piano plays a much smaller part on this CD than on "Water," which is also part of this series. Hamilton's beautiful guitar work comes to the front of several of the tracks, with Kater layering other sounds with synths and sequencers to create a peaceful, serene atmosphere. Hardy's various bamboo and Native American flutes are warm, "earthy," and reminiscent of some of Kater's previous collaborations with Native American artists. The combination of flute, guitar, and piano is fairly unusual and is very effective. The synth washes add subtle colors and contribute to the sense of open space and vastness. The mood throughout the CD is peaceful and calming - truly an understatement!

The CD opens appropriately enough with "Sunrise," a quietly haunting flute solo that melts into "Celestine," which adds the guitar, synth, and piano - a gorgeous piece that all but floats on a cloud. The next eight tracks are a prelude and then a full piece for each of the four seasons, beginning with "Summer." All are stunning in their simplicity and beauty. The closing track is "Sunset," which, like "Sunrise," features the flute, but this time has synth behind it - a peaceful close to an outstanding album.

Every song on the cd is a must have!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Earth, wind and who?.......2007-01-05

I am not familiar with most of these songs. The quality of the recordings are very nice and professional, but I don't recognize but only two of the songs. Anyway, if you are looking for Earth, Wind & Fire's greatest hits, do yourself a favor: DO NOT CHOSE THIS ONE !!!

4 out of 5 stars EWF - A ggod collection if..........2006-11-03

Overall, you know what to expect from an EWF compilation. Overall, this is good and contains all the songs you would expect and a few that I had totally forgotten. If you already own the Greatest Hits CD you have most of the songs you are probably wanting to hear, but if you want to amass the definitive collection of EWF this is a good purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Great Recording, but not to my taste.......2005-06-09

I'd heard of Earth Wind & Fire but knew very little about them. But being struck with the "being in love" bug, I naturally have a proclivity for music that seems to address this illness. The title hooked me and I ordered it.

The quality of the vocals and of the musicians is superb across the board. That being said, it is mostly not to my taste so I am not qualified to provide a great review. There are a few tracks I really like. "I'll Write a Song for You" comes immediately to mind as does "Be Ever Wonderful". Those, in particularly, reached out to me. The others were well done but did not suit.

I am not at all unhappy about buying this one. Earth Wind & Fire fans should enjoy it especially.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence........2005-04-12

This is a product you'll enjoy from track 1 to the finish. The remastering has really put the icing on the cake. You will feel as if the Boys are doing Devotion or Be Ever Wonderful right in your living room. Phillip Bailey falsettoes are all over the tracks, Maurice White does his best neo-spiritualist, non denomination deacon, and McKay/Dunn/Verdine on rhythm instuments set this whole enterprise just right. Even Nasciemento's afro-Brasilian Rhyme Interlude is given a fresh hearing here. You won't find That's the Way (yow!) of the World, but you are gonna hear All About Love and an equally impressive Imagination here.(I really don't understand why folks prefer Reasons to Imagination, but they both are heard here.) With the summer season coming up, you know you're gonna need some great ol' school grooves to listen to on those lazy evenings reserved for deprogramming and chillin'. This is a perfect CD for doing just that.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Sweet, heartfelt, folk-country fusion.......2006-10-01

As always, songstress and keyboardist Lydia McCauley offers a refreshing purity in her music--a simplicity and directness of both voice and sentiment, and a graceful acceptance of the dichotomies of life. Beauty and loss, pleasure and pain, love and conflict--she celebrates them all in song with the thoughtfully inspiring lyrics and soft-voiced comfort of a nurturing mother. McCauley's love of family, nature and God come shining through this warm, wistful, optimistic music. Something new on this, her third album, are the frequent vocal harmonizations. They very appealing--well suited to the standard folk-country harmonic structure of these pieces, which practically begs for a sing along. McCauley's long-time band includes some wonderful improvisers whose style fits perfectly with her compositions: Phil Heaven on viola; Frank Jackson on recorders, penny whistle and wooden flute; Brian Cunningham on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, synthesizer; Lynne Givler on double bass and background vocals, and Jason Darling on percussion (ashiko, cymbals, bodhran, muzhar, bendir, darambuka, conga, shakers, rain stick, and chimes). Try also her next albums, "Moon of Wintertime" and "ForeignLander," "The Strayaway Child" trilogy by Jerry Read Smith, and anything by Loreena McKennitt or Kate Price.

Has it been a while since you've discovered a vibrant, fresh talent? Perhaps years ago a friend wanted you to hear a CD from a new musician who went on to be your all time favorite....

Beauty of the Earth by Lydia McCauley could be this years' version of that experience. Put Appalachia,Ireland,Washington State, Italy, Loreena McKennitt and Enya in a jar and......... SHAKE!

5 out of 5 stars I Love every song on it!.......2002-07-14

Lydia McCauley's new CD, The Beauty of the Earth, is a well thought-out, beautifully produced, and thoroughly enjoyable album. I love every song on it.
I have enjoyed Lydia's previous CDs, but her new one is my favorite! I find myself listening to it everyday and it never fails to lift my spirits. There are moments of pure ecstacy in several of the songs.
I am impressed with the quality of Lydia's musicians. They work together in a wonderful way, each one seems highly skilled. The recorder player adds an early music sound, the violist displays an array of styles, the guitarist is outstanding, and the bass and percussion fill it out nicely.
If you like Mary Black, Loreena McKennitt, or Kate Rusby, I would highly recommend that you buy this CD!

3 out of 5 stars There's potential, but it needs some work........2006-12-22

Winter Is Coming is the debut album of the band, Winterfell. The song listing includes:

      1. Winter is Coming
      2. Son of the Sun
      3. The Will of the Ring
      4. War Angel

Winter is Coming is in my opinion the strongest song on the ablum. Instrumentally, there are memorable rifts, strong blending, and hints of high quality. Vocally, the album lacks power and finesse. It seems that the vocal tracks are perhaps toned down or the instrumentals are too strong, but whatever the cause the lead vocal doesn't come across strong or clear. I do, however, think this is correctable.

In all, the band seems to have great potential. I did purchase and listen to their follow up CD, The Viel of Summer and found it to be quite an improvement over this initial CD. I look forward to their future releases and what great music they can potentially produce.

On a final note, I would also love to hear what they could sound like with some back up vocals to blend in with the lead. I think this would go a long way to making the whole musical experience a bit more epic in scope.

      4 out of 5 stars Epic.......2005-12-20

My only complaint is the length. I need more songs!
Very cool band, excellent sound, production, vocals, everything. I have been describing them as a mellower Iced Earth, but somebody on a the Winterfell web board described thier sound as strikingly similar to Hammerfall, without all the 'gay', I can't agree more.
Fans of George RR Martin and J RR Tolkein will enjoy this album, there are two epic power metal masterpieces one titled Winter is Coming, the other called The Will of the Ring.
Pick these guys up, you won't be dissapointed, and check out thier full length album The Veil of Summer for more fantasy related power/thrash metal, more songs dedicated to George RR Martin, and a cool new sound.

5 out of 5 stars Top Choice for 2 Fine Martin Pieces Returns.......2005-05-08

This is a very welcome reissue of 2 neglected masterpieces by the great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974), in 1st rate performances by a world-class orchestra & conductor. Both works were written in the early 1960s, & the live versions here date from 1970 (Cello Concerto) & 1965 (The 4 Elements). The 2nd movement of the Concerto, composed for cellist Pierre Fournier, is one of the greatest stretches of music Martin ever wrote, a minor-key saraband that builds to an impressive, passionate climax. Flanking it are 2 movements of equal quality, the 1st spinning off from a beautiful folk-like modal theme (heard unaccompanied on the cello at the start) & the 3rd governed by nervous, taut syncopations. A fine piece that deserves to be recorded as frequently as Martin's earlier Violin Concerto. Jean De Croos is the flawless soloist here.
The 4 Elements is unusual in Martin's mature orchestral oeuvre in being a work for large symphony orchestra & not a concertante piece (that is, one featuring a soloist or soloists). It is a conscious homage to the French tradition of nature painting & orchestral color in music, & to the great conductor Ernest Ansermet & his way with the music of Debussy & Ravel. Martin was very responsive to the sights & sounds around him, yet it was rare for him to attempt to translate the emotions roused in him by natural sights into music. So the 4 movements of The 4 Elements - Earth, Water, Air & Fire - really show another aspect of Martin's rich & profound artistic personality. It also gives the Concertgebouw Orchestra a chance to show off its many colors, which it does splendidly under Bernard Haitink's excellent direction.
Indeed, for me both performances remain top choice for these 2 works, despite a very good studio version of the Cello Concerto by Stephen Kates (Louisville), & a sonically lush rendition of The 4 Elements by Matthias Bamert & the Royal Philharmonic (Chandos). The sound in both pieces is excellent. Highly recommended; grab this CD while it's available.
