5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money for a true fan.......2005-04-26

I love MMJ. They are one of the best and most underrated bands out there. This is a collection of their early stuff (95-97). Some of the recording quality is a little ruff but that is so easily overlooked when the songs are as amazing as they are. If you are a fan than you must buy this album, along with Vol. 2 of this collection.

Album Description

Bessie Smith was not the first to record a blues - indeed her early career was not even as a blues singer - yet she stands astride the genre like a colossus. As well as her fame as an entertainer, she was a formidable human being. She simply refused to recognise opposition - incredibly, one night in 1927, she faced down the feared Ku Klux Klan. She was born poor in 1894, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both parents died while Bessie was still young and she was raised by her older sister, Viola. To augment Viola's meagre earnings as a laundress, Bessie and her older brother Clarence took to the streets as entertainers. In time, Bessie obtained regular work as a dancer and chorus girl. By 1921, when she was living in Philadelphia, Bessie was a star. She had several unsuccessful tests for recording companies. In February 1923, after she'd moved to New York, Columbia gave her a chance. Her first cuts, made on February 15th, are lost. However, the next day she recorded Gulf Coast Blues and Down Hearted Blues with piano backing by Clarence Williams, who had written the former. This combination was released as Bessie's first disc. It sold 750,000. All her skills are on display. Initially, Gulf Coast was the A-side, but it was the honesty and clarity of Down Hearted that people flocked to buy. Soon after her recording debut, Bessie and new husband, Jack Gee, discovered that she was signed not to Columbia, but to Clarence Williams, who was appropriating half Bessie's recording fee. The angry pair confronted Williams, who released Bessie from her contract. With Williams temporarily out of favour, a new piano accompanist was needed. Fletcher Henderson stepped in. He's featured on ten sides here and shows himself to be as self-effacing, if a little subtler, than Williams. By the end of June, with a decent supply of material in the can, Walker released Bessie for a Southern tour. Her hit record had preceded her and the shows were sell-outs. During this tour, Bessie also discovered the emerging power of radio. Most shows were then transmitted `live' so, while earning a fee for performing, she promoted her records. The final two cuts on CD:A feature Bessie duetting with fellow blues singer Clara Smith. Bessie generally kept other blueswomen at bay, but Clara was an exception. Her voice here is plaintive and flexible, but Bessie dominates. Having mainly confined her to piano accompaniment, Columbia now began adding extra instruments. The first two tracks on CD:B, have the singer in the company of a decent clarinettist and pianist. Presumably Fletcher Henderson was needed elsewhere because he was back the next day. From Bessie's January 1924 sides, Frosty Mornin' Blues is surely a gem - its more traditional blues instrumentation, with Harry Reser on guitar, draws a performance of feeling from Bessie - once she and Reser accommodate to to the slow rhythm. Reser returned to help Bessie deliver an ironic interpretation of Easy Come Easy Go Blues. After this session, it was back to live work in Nashville. She was popular with both white and black audiences in the south, although they were, of course, segregated. Other black performers seem to have modified their acts for whites, cleaning them up if necessary. Not Bessie. She was in the vanguard of a generation of black performers which wouldn't conform to the `yassuh' stereotype.

3 out of 5 stars Wondering about the remastering........2007-06-30

I guess I'm curious if JSP did their own transfers, or, as they do with some frequency these days, ripped off transfers from other companies. Frog Records has a tremendous Complete Bessie Smith series, featuring wonderful remasterings by J.R.T. Davies. But those are nearly $20 per cd. If they stole these versions, that might explain the reports of good sound....because the old Columbia cds are absolutely awful sonically.

5 out of 5 stars Carmel's opinion.......2007-05-13

Excellent sound quality of the earlier recordings of the most important of all blues singers.

AMAZON IS ONE OF VERY FEW OUTLETS THAT SELL CD'S ETC.FROM SOME OF THE OLD
BUT NOT FAMOUS ARTISTS, THAT MADE MUSIC WHAT IT IS TODAY. THIS ARTIST WAS AS THE TITLE IMPLIES, A BLUES SINGER FROM THE 1920'S WHO UNFORTUNATELY DIED VERY YOUNG BY TODAYS STANDARDS,BUT WHO PIONEERED FINE MUSIC. I WAS
ONLY INTRODUCED TO BESSIE BY AN OLD FRIEND RECENTLY, AND I GOT ONTO THE WEB TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER. THIS CD REPRESENTS EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT 'THE BLUES' AND HAS BEEN REMASTERED PERFECTLY. ON THIS CD ACCOMPANYING BESSIE ARE OTHER ARTISTS INCLUDING LOUIS ARMSTRONG. FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS 'THE BLUES' THIS IS A MUST.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's a measure of Roy Orbison's classics that even some of the uptempo songs that break up the dominant balladic mood of this 20-song collection are themselves fairly melancholic. Rarely does Orbison allow himself the outright celebration of something like "Mean Woman Blues," more often going for the shades of gray that slip into "Blue Angel" and "Leah." Few could do what he achieves on these singles, and not just because few are gifted with such a voice. The biggest achievement of all may be Orbison's ability to make a devastated cry like "Only the Lonely" sound somehow peaceful. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Great sounds from the Best.......2007-07-25

This CD brought back lots of good memories. Roy Orbison was one of the Greats, Saw him in person years ago and will never forget the great voice he had. I recommend buying this CD

5 out of 5 stars Best 1 disc Orbison collection.......2007-05-27

This is the best single disc collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits. It was originally released on 2 LPs in the early 80's. One thing I've always wondered about is that this 20 track CD has always been also available as 2 separate volumes with 10 tracks each & having the same cover artwork (you'd have to be careful to read the list of tracks on the back) Why?? If someone is an Orbison fan why would they want one volume & not the other? Why not just have all 20 tracks on one CD, as it is done here? Also, one reviewer asks why "You Got It" isn't here, well it's because that song wasn't even recorded yet when this album was released, and that song was on Virgin Records, not Monument.

5 out of 5 stars It is Roy Orbison.......2007-03-29

What more can be said? Roy Orbison has a quality of voice that can't be duplicated. One of the few really original and great voices.

4 out of 5 stars Sound is good.......2007-03-21

I would like to suggest, contrary to the review of Aug 2006, that the sound on this nice collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits, is actually quite good.

With the puzzling exception of the song LOVE HURTS, which seems to have been mastered from a very muffled tape.

This Sony disk was issued in 1989, and has not been re-mastered since then, so you're getting a relatively unfutzed edition for a nominal price.

5 out of 5 stars All time greatest Hits of Roy Orbison.......2007-01-10

Love this CD. Just what I ezpected and wanted. Would recommend it to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and ready to be eaten.......1998-09-01

The Raspberries didn't last long--four albums and a handful of singles represents the band's career. Of all the post-Beatles power pop bands, they were among the best. Although Eric Carmen would become better known for some of his early 80's dreck, the material he wrote for the band(along with talented guitarist and songwriter Wally Bryson)showed his true talent as a songwriter.

Bryson contributes a number of great songs as well either written solo or in collaboration with Carmen. He is a talent frequently overlooked by most critics and a major contributor to the band's sound. His "Party's over" is a highlight of this album.

Additionally, this disc has all of the songs that have come to be associated with the band including "Go all the way"(one of the best power pop songs since "She loves you"). "I wanna be with you", "Last dance" and the ironic "Overnight sensation" all fit into this category as well. This is a band in a different time(now or even the early 80's)would have been appreciated more. Musicians like Matthew Sweet, Freedy Johnston and Big Star all owe a huge debt to this band. Although Big Star was, in some respects, contemporaries of The Raspberries, there is a clear influence from the Raspberries(as well as a Beatles/Badfinger influence found in both bands).

The Raspberries tasted more sucess than Big Star and a number of their contemporaries and they deserved more as this compilation shows. Ron Furmanek(who did the Badfinger reissues) does a terrific job of compiling and annotating the album. The mastering by Kevin Reeves sparkles and captures all of the production touches on the original albums with additional detail & depth. these tracks from the original two track masters. They have never sounded this crisp or tight(even the lp's lacked the dynamic range to fully appreciate these songs. Although Rhino's "Little bit of Gold" was quite good, it suffered from much more distortion and compression).

The notes are a very complete representation of the band's begining and ending. Originally issued in 1991, this is the definitive collection until their individual albums are released domestically on cd. This generous overview has 20 tracks and includes some radio promos(which are kind of cool to listen to...it's a window into the past of radio). Highly recommended.

    Album Description

Beautifully packaged two CD compilation consisting of recordings from the last 20 years of Moondog's life, when he resided and recorded in Germany. Disc One consists of studio recordings from 1977-99 and features 'High On A Rocky Ledge', 'Do Your Thing', 'I'm This, I'm That', 'Heimdall Fanfare', 'Fujiyama 2 (Lovesong)' and more. Disc Two is his last live performance, recorded a month before his death, and is wonderfully recorded, sounding as well-produced as the studio tracks on the first disc. The packaging includes 44 pages of liner notes featuring essays, interviews, photographs and other information, all packaged in a hard cardboard sleeve, creating a virtual work of art.

3 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25

Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.

Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.

Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...

    4 out of 5 stars Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12

This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)

The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)

The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.

I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.

    5 out of 5 stars Late Moondog.......2005-04-27

When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.

Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.

Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.

Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

    5 out of 5 stars Great doo-wop music!.......2007-03-02

"The Best of King Federal & Deluxe Doo Wop Vol 1" presents 20 tunes from the fabled label.
While you've probably heard of some of the groups here, most of these tunes are pretty obscure.
Nevertheless, this is early rockin' doo-wop at its best.
The sound quality of this CD is very good.
The only down side to this CD is the lack of liner notes (like most CDs I have from "Collectables" ).
    A must-have for advanced doo-wop fans.

4 out of 5 stars Sample early rock & roll and doo wop favorites from Cincinnati's legendary King records.......2005-12-18

At the dawn of rock and roll in the late 40's and early 1950's there were creative forces at work in cities all across America. Big Band music had largely run it's course as the predominant musical genre in this country and something brand new was brewing. This new sound was being heavily influenced by African-Americans. Some call it R&B, some refer to it as doo wop and still others insist that this was early rock and roll. What was so fascinating about this period is that each city seemed to come up with it's own unique sound. In 1943 in Cincinnati Ohio record store owner Syd Nathan established King Records. His label originally released recordings aimed at the "hillbilly" market. But Nathan quickly realized that there was a fortune to be made in what were then referred to as "race" records. And so it was that King records began to record "black" artists. This chain of events perfectly positioned Syd Nathan and King Records for the explosion of interest in black music in the years following World War II.
"The Best of King Federal & Deluxe Doo Wop Vol 1" features 20 tracks from the vaults of this legendary company. It is worth noting that several of the acts included here and even Syd Nathan himself would one day be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Enjoy a pair of tracks from the great Hank Ballard and the Midnighters including "The Hoochie Coochie Coo" and "Annie's Aunt Fanny". Discover the awesome sound of Otis Williams and The Charms on both "Ling Ting Tong" and "Two Hearts". This collection also features three upbeat numbers by The Chanters including their big hit "No No No". Perhaps the biggest blunder Syd Nathan ever made was not signing the Platters to a long term deal. Give a listen to "Voo-Vee-Ah-Bee" and you will understand what I am talking about. What a great tune! One of my all-time favorite doo wop tunes is also included here. The Checkers recorded an amazing version of the World War II favorite "The White Cliffs of Dover" in 1954. I always enjoy hearing that one. And I would be remiss if I failed to mention The Dominoes. Over the years this group featured the likes of Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson as lead vocalists. You may sample a couple of their hits as well. Finally, there are tunes by a pair of long forgotten artists. Both Little Willie John's "Leave My Kitten Alone" and Wyonnie Harris' rollicking recording of "Lovin' Machine" are well worth a listen.
Whether you are a big fan of this type of music or someone just curious to learn about the genre then "The Best of King Federal & Deluxe Doo Wop Vol 1" is an outstanding choice. You will have an opportunity to sample a variety of sounds from those golden days. Unfortunately, as Collectables is loathe to do there are absolutely no liner notes included. Too bad. Liner notes greatly enhance the enjoyability of packages like this. But we certainly have no qualms with the music. Highly recommended!
