Sorabji's Concerto for Piano Solo.......2007-04-20

Five stars are not enough to rate this CD. Ten stars is more adequate. Jonathan Powell, whom I had the fortune of seeing perform Sorabji's Opus Clavicembalisticum in Manhattan in June of 2004, delivers a stellar performance of a spectacular tour de force of Sorabjian pianistic writing. Sorabji was influenced by Alkan's Concerto for piano solo when he completed composing the piece heard here, Concerto per suonare de me solo, in 1946. In this piece, Sorabji pulls out all of his usual musical vocabulary: dense chromatic filigree, ornate musical structures, the 'nocturne' genre (2nd movement of the Concerto) that Sorabji is often identified with (e.g., Djami, Gulistan, and le jardin de parfume), and left-handed ebbing motifs with right-handed acrobats, yet tastefully musical in the Sorabjian way. Next to Charles Hopkins's recording of Gulistan, Jonathan Powell's recording heard here is the most appealing of all of the Sorabji CDs presently available. Highly highly recommended. This CD reveals all that Sorabji was harmonically and pianistically about. Powell is one of the few pianists (VERY FEW) who can deliver this music convincingly and persuasively. His technique reveals Sorabji's music as it should be; Powell is more than up to the task of meeting the demands of Sorabji's music, its excesses as well as its sheer musicality. This is one of the BEST. Get it.

My best baroque CD.......2004-08-29

Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of them) of baroque music for brass is surprising and fascinating me with every 'song', showing facetes and diversity I always missed on my other records. Finally nothing is like the original PJ!

Après nous avoir fait plaisir avec le Greatest Hits, voici un double CD qui nous enchante avec les principales pièces de la Renaissance du sublime Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Il y a longtemps que nous attendions la mise en CD de ces oeuvres, et nous voila comblé. Pour plusieurs pièces, c'est Elgar Howarth qui les a arrangé. Un grand moment de musique pour cuivres avec de grands compositeurs, délicieusement arrangées.
Pour éléver encore plus ces 2 cds, saluons encore la présence du London Festival Brass Ensemble dirigé par Elgar Howarth (dont la plus part des membres sont du PJBE), alors quoi de plus normal d'avoir inclu leur préstation.

Good lesser-known repertoire.......2007-08-04

Another great renaissance album by the ABQ. This one has a lot of little-known works, all of which are well executed. I may be wrong, but I believe that Ray and Chris are playing flugelhorns on the Cangiasi, Biumi, and Canali, which makes for an interesting and effective sound combination.

What can I say, Premiata Forneria Marconi is always good to listen. To me, one of the most important representatives of the european progressive music. Which in my opinion, the concept is wrong, it should be called, complete or innovative. Their music is so diverse, rich and complete, that is a pleassure listening to any of their CDs.

Like Genesis and Yes, PFM turned to pop in 1980.......2003-02-26

I was curious to hear this album after the title cut, "Maestro della Voce", and "Si Può Fare" all appeared on PFM's 1998 and 2002 live albums. On this 1980 album, PFM turned from progressive rock and fusion to a more accessible rock/pop direction, as its peers Genesis ("Abacab") and Yes ("90210") were doing around that time. Singer Bernardo Lanzetti had left the band, and drummer Franz DiCioccio stepped up to be the front man. He sings four of the eight songs, keyboardist Flavio Premoli two, and guitarist Franco Mussida one. The three sing in unison on "Sogno Americano", the weakest track.

The most striking thing about the album is how many of the instrumental parts seem to be channeling the Dixie Dregs, especially when violinist Lucio Fabbri plays in unison with Mussida's wailing guitar on "Topolino", "Sogno Americano", and "Bianco e Nero". Premoli also throws in some T Lavitz-like playing, particularly on "Volo a Vela", and Fabbri plays downhome fiddle on "Tanti Auguri". Seen in this light, "Si Può Fare", which is probably PFM's most straight-ahead rocker ever, comes across as PFM's equivalent of the Dregs' "Road Expense" or "Rock & Roll Park". (I'm not suggesting, though, that these arrangements are anywhere near as intricate as the Dregs'.) "Maestro della Voce", propelled by Patrick Djivas' circular bass line, and "Si Può Fare" come off well here, but the ballad "Suonare Suonare" sounds much weaker than on the live albums. "Topolino" is my favorite of the other songs. Overall, the album could use a little more intensity, but it's good enough that I expect to listen to it many times in years to come.
