This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. Shepherd seems sincere enough, but the real stars are the ageing musicians who have maintained their chops and intensity through a lifetime of performing music that clearly comes from the soul. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's reverence for his musical roots are center-stage on Ten Days Out...Blues From The Backroads, a CD+DVD package that features the guitarslinger and Double Trouble rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton performing with some of the greatest blues players of our time as well as lesser-known but historically significant bluesmen. Traveling to their hometowns to record everywhere from juke joints to front porches, from New Orleans to Kansas, Shepherd celebrates and becomes part of blues history with Ten Days Out...Blues From The Backroads.

5 out of 5 stars Great music and a piece of blues history.......2007-07-19

This is a wonderful bit of blues history. I take my hat off to KWS for taking a back seat to these blues legends. The music is fantastic and the DVD/CD catalogs an art form that is loosing its greatest performers every day. If you are a blues fan or want to know a bit of its history you need to get this release. It is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2007-07-18

Maybe it's the rythm section as well, but Kenny adds another layer to these old blues guys. I would like to see a lot more of these types of CDs before we lose some of this great music. Since the recording and the release, 5 of the players had died. What a shame for the loss, but thanks Kenny and company for exposing them to a greater audience. They all deserved it.

5 out of 5 stars Blues greats, best of blues artists.......2007-07-07

Wonderful DVD/CD chronicling major historic blues artists - one of a kind album - a 'must have' for the blues enthusiast. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-04

I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fierce talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.

The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.

BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-04

This is actually my second purchase of this item. When I purchased one for myself and realized how good it was, I purchsed one as a gift for a friend. Highly recommend for anyone who loves the blues.

The world can't get enough of Madonna, and with CD/DVD sets like The Confessions Tour dropping regularly, it's little wonder why. As a thrower of fantasy dance parties, she is peerless. As a physical role model for the 40-ish women who grew up on her music, she rules. And as an arbiter of what's going to sound shockingly original in any given decade--well, duh. The Confessions Tour rounds up songs from way back--"Ray of Light" and "La Isla Bonita" make the DVD, and "Lucky Star" and "Like a Virgin" are on the CD as well as the DVD--but this concert, filmed in 2006 at London's Wembley Arena, aims its sturdiest spotlight on Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madge's 2005 disco disc. You could argue, then, that unless you're in it for the sheer DVD spectacle (and what a spectacle it is), there's no sense in owning this package. Only you wouldn't be right. Because as any on-the-ball Madonna fan knows, what she's doing musically is telling a story--you may already know the characters, but that doesn't mean she hasn't completely reworked the plot. To that end, "I Love New York" gets its rock on, "Let It Will Be" has a musical temper tantrum, and "Hung Up" goes for the drama queen award. You've heard these songs before, but you've never heard them quite like this, to borrow a bad informercial phrase. As twisted and hopped-up as they've become, they're all worth getting to know again. --Tammy La Gorce

The best concert album ever ! I though "Paradise -not for me" but yes, It does !!

5 out of 5 stars She does it again!.......2007-07-18

The Confessions Tour - Live from London is other fabulous concert from our dear Madge. Some of my favorites from the concert include: Live to Tell, Jump, Like a Virgin, Ray of Light, I Love New York, Let it Will Be, and La Isla Bonita. Madonna never disappoints, she always delivers a strong show no matter if she's performing new songs or classics. My favorite theme is probably the equestrian act. This item also comes with a bonus CD. I highly recommend checking The Confessions Tour out. It's worth the money. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Best Madonna Ever.......2007-07-12

This is my favorite Madonna Concert ever. My favorite performance are future lovers, La Isla bonita, and Erotica ( best erotica mix ever) and of course Like a Virgin. Madonna showed alot of energy and showed how creative and original she always is. I cant stop watching it. Madonna Definetly is the Queen of Music.

Wow I pre orderded befor it was available in stores and actually got it the day before general distribution, A great DVD, don't care much for CD's I listen to satelite radio most of the time

4 out of 5 stars The Evolution of Madonna : Pink Elephants & Lemonade.......2007-06-26

Its ironic that Madonna's better stage performances are all coming late in her career. "The Confessions Tour" is by far her most artistic, musically challenging and diverse concert tour, and this package only serves to reiterate what an astounding talent she is. This review is primarily for the DVD, as the CD is just the audio of the DVD ripped anyway.

Think about this - what other 48 year old do you know who can perform aerobic dancing, sing simultaneously, and hold a note, all while wearing a bikini! Well, I certainly don't know anyone like that, and what is perhaps most astounding is just how classy the entire act is, even through the admittedly sexually charged bits.

The best thing on this 2.5 hour extravaganza is "Erotica", a completely reworked version (in actuality, Madonna sings the original version of `Erotica' she intended for release - with the lyrics of a track called "You Thrill Me"). My favorite part is the last four-song segment, where Madonna introduces her `Disco' persona. Her backup dancers as ever, defy gravity and are good-looking to boot. One dancer in particular stands out - a skinny long haired young man who is as flexible as a rubber band. However, "Erotica" has never looked so good in any of its' avatars, and I thought this version left the studio recording light years behind - its that good.

This is also the first Madonna concert to feature so much dancing. Madonna actually dances frenetically to many numbers, including a highly stylized and choreographed routine with two female backup dancers to "Music". There is also a special feature segment that shows her practicing this - unbelievable. I have had so many friends who were dancers in their 20s who didn't move like this. I still cannot believe this is a woman pushing 50.

Above all, there is the music. Tracks that seemed weak on the "Confessions" studio album, are made more accessible here. "Get Together" which I always used to skip, becomes a keeper. Similarly, weak track "Jump" is actually listenable on this one. Some of the more interesting portions of the concert involve Madonna's friend "Isaac" (who even wears a turban at one point). I thought this was Mirwais, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, when she tries to make this concert `spiritual' or `soulful', it begins to unravel. They should have just kept this entire concert upbeat and energetic.

No review would be complete without telling you the downsides of the product, and there are three here. One is the godawful version of "Isaac" that Madonna tries to pull off here. This is a poor second cousin to "Frozen", with a similar `Eastern' tinge to it (I could see where they were going with this one, but it just doesn't work). This is followed by a dreary rendition of "Drowned World" (possibly Madonna's greatest ballad), which is followed by the hideous "Paradise (Not for Me)" (which is a beautiful song, but Isaac and Madonna ruin it beyond recognition here). This should be seen to be believed. How they could massacre a simple melody like this is beyond me.

However, we're back in action with singalong versions of "Hung Up" (including a four minute shout-out/call-back to the audience where Madonna asks them to repeat "Time goes back, so slowly" in her infamously fake British accent), and "Sorry" (which has Madonna kissing one of her female dancers, and some amount of funky dancing).

Madonna sometimes exits the stage every now and then, whereupon her dancers take the spotlight and dance to a variety of Madonna collages and flash images. This is not necessarily a good thing - in fact, its downright boring. However, the `special features' on the disc, aren't really special at all. In fact, they are at best footage of Madonna rehearsing, with a tremendous amount of time spent on her dancers waxing about her in French accents ("I can't believe I'm really here", "Oh My God, I'm dancing for Madonna!", and "This is a once in a lifetime experience!" etc.). Nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly nothing to write home about. But the great thing about these is watching Madonna actually dance. Without the makeup she sports on stage, she looks much, much older, and quite tired and haggard, but who can blame her, poor thing?

All in all, this is a must-buy, even if you're not really a Madonna fan. I'm sort of neutral about her, but if I consider that I like this much more than some of the Rock DVDs I have in my collection, then Madonna must have done something right. This is a fabulous, colorful and very entertaining concert, and no one I know has ever regretted purchasing this. Yes, its very `pink' and targeted towards a gay audience in so many subliminal ways, but no matter what your demographic, theres no way you can not enjoy the sheer fun this is. Get it now!

In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). (The DVD offers up a similar take on Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," for instance.) The DVD portion of this combo set doubles the ante by offering 18 tracks (plus a bonus "Song for You" with Chris Botti) to the CD's 8. There's also a 20-minute backstage featurette showing what goes into the preparation for the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Sensational young crooner Michael Buble stars in his first "Great Performances" PBS special this holiday season: that and his August live performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles will be seen and heard in this CD/DVD package. Now Buble takes yet another giant step in his meteoric career.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2007-08-01

I first saw this DVD in part at Best Buy in the TV section and thought--"who is this guy? I love it!" So after buying his newest CD there was still a missing component for me. This DVD will make you twice the MB fan--he's so fun to watch and then when you listen to the included CD of the live performances you are brought right back to the stage and his wonderful voice. It is a great buy--you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great value!.......2007-07-25

I love this music. Great orchestra backing up the songs with fantastic arrangements and musicianship. The vocals are done with taste and excitement.

4 out of 5 stars Buble'.......2007-07-22

If it weren't for the DVD, this rating would have been a 3 star. The DVD is great, but the CD doesn't contain all the songs from the DVD, and the editing is terrible. As an example, Michael introduces his #1 hit song as the next number, but another song follows! Michael still sounds good as ever but given a second chance, I would probably purchase another of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-07-21

You get the best of both worlds with Michael's "Caught in the Act": a CD with some of the songs from the live concert and, of course, the DVD so you can see Michael's superb performance. Thank God a young singer finally came along who appreciates the great standards of yesteryear and who sings them superbly. You couldn't ask for anything more. Bravo Buble.

The Hannah Montana special edition soundtrack arrives so coolly p ackaged and with such a bonanza of extras that it might even induce budget-conscious tweens who already own the original to break open their piggy banks a second time. All the same hyper-charged, deliriously fun songs are here--the Radio Disney hit "If We Were a Movie" and the speaker-hazardous "Pumpin' up the Party" included--but so is a new number, "Nobody's Perfect," that again reaches out with a message from Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah, without mitigating the sky-high mood. Toe-tapping, indeed, is mandatory. Throughout. Other deluxe-edition tack-ons include signed snaps of the double-life-leading superstar, a certificate for a free "This Is the Life" ringtone, and a starter course of celebrity dish: in addition to a concert sliver featuring "Nobody's Perfect" on disc two (the DVD), Miss Cyrus leads her breathless fans on chummy, if minimally revealing, backstage tour. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD for Tweens and Teens.......2007-06-13

I like the songs by Hannah Montana on this CD because they don't talk about boys and relationships but are focused more on a positive self image. There are a few songs at the end by other artists which aren't as good.

In an era of digital downloads and singles, Tori Amos embraces the concept album in a sprawling 23-song oratorio. Firing across the American psychological, social, and political landscape, she takes on the state of the world, war, and feminism. To help her, she adopts five personas--her American Doll Posse--who take their characteristics from Greek gods, but not their names: Clyde, Pip, Isabel, Santa, and Tori. You need a scorecard to keep track, but don't worry. It's still Tori Amos, bending syllables in improbable pretzels with rippling piano themes and choruses that threaten to go Broadway at any moment. Amos vents her political spleen through "Isabel," leaving no doubt as to her targets on tracks like "Yo George," and comments on our impersonal age and computer addiction with "Digital Ghost." That's sung by the character "Tori," who is reputedly based on Demeter and Dionysus, representing the split between Amos's earth-mother side and her wilder, more libertine tendencies. Anti-war and pro-feminist themes are plastered across American Doll Posse like sloganeering posters. "Dark Side of the Sun" laments both sides of the war, including the Islamists who lay down their lives "for some sick promise of heaven." Amos adopts a big '80s rock sound on many tracks, with guitarist Mac Aladdin pealing off Brian May-style guitar licks over an arena-rock beat. It's where Amos details a more personal sound that American Doll Posse leaves a lasting impression. "Girl Disappearing," sung by "Clyde," holds echoes of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," not only because of the string quartet and nostalgic tone, but the updated tale of a woman losing herself. "Smokey Joe" brims with dark atmospheres, Robert Fripp-like guitar sustains, and Amos's most elaborate vocal arrangements, interweaving two sets of lyrics for "Pip." More than a concept album, American Doll Posse is a convergence experience, mixing online blogs from each character, videos, MySpace sites, and more. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars I can listen to the whole thing without skipping a song........2007-07-27

Very rarely do I have CDs where I can listen to the whole thing without skipping a song or two. This whole cd is great. I've always liked Tori Amos but haven't enjoyed her past couple of albums as much. But this is the Tori I went grew up with. But it's also more than that... it's actually quite different...a sort of conglomerate of different types of music but with unmistakable Amos lyrics and her brilliant use of piano and vocals layered for a sound that can only be described as Tori Amos.

5 out of 5 stars because I like you, pookie pie!.......2007-07-16

I had "American Doll Posse" on continuous rotation for about two months and only just this week moved on from it. If I had to choose a very favorite song on this album, I would have to go with "Dragon" from the bonus material. It's hauntingly beautiful and, somehow, classic Tori. But there are so many strong and lovely "girls" here, and the only one I'm not too crazy about is the opener, "Yo George" (I'm not fond of in-your-face political stuff, even from Tori) -- but even that one has grown on me considerably. "Bouncing on Clouds" is upbeat, catchy and delightful; "Digital Ghost" is beautifully wistful; "Body and Soul" is driving and gothic; "Programmable Soda" is Tori having fun and really sticks in my head; "Code Red," "Roosterspur Bridge", "Beauty of Speed," "Almost Rosey" and "Dark Side of the Sun" are all classic, gorgeous Tori. And we even get a silly, catchy "Posse Bonus" song (because Tori likes you, pookie pie!).

I don't really understand the different "characters" Tori takes on for this album, and I'm sure if I did it would add another dimension, but quite frankly I don't care. Even without a "concept," Tori's music has dozens more layers and dimensions to it than most, and she hasn't disappointed me yet.

5 out of 5 stars Tori Amos is consistent .......2007-07-15

"American Doll Posse" sounds like most of her previous CDs. But, that can be taken two ways. If you love the older Tori Amos, you get more of the same beautiful music. If you like to see artists grow, develop, and evolve then Tori Amos might seem to be a one trick pony.
"American Doll Posse" has Tori Amos' beautiful voice and mastery of the keyboard. She gives us a variety of songs in subject and mood. Again, it is a conceptual piece: the 'American Doll Posse' is five aspects of Tori's personality, philosophy and politics and each song is written by one of the five facets. Extensive liner notes explain each facet and which song is attributed to them.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-07-14

I love Tori - alway have, always will. I haven't loved all of her albums, but she's always trying to reinvent herself, for better or worse, and yet still remains the Tori that we all know and love. This album is just beautiful. The up-tempo songs are awesome, and songs like "Bouncing off Clouds" are classic Tori. A must buy for all Tori fans, new and old.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning, magickal, and undeniably powerful........2007-06-29

***This review is c/o newWitch Magazine***

I've always been a huge fan of Tori Amos. She's the type of artist, like Björk or Ani Difranco, that people either love or hate. Personally, I think her music is absolutely miraculous and the newest album is no exception.
For American Doll Posse, Tori has assumed the guise of five different characters, each of which is said to be an embodiment of an archetypal energy, with particular intentional connections to Graeco-Roman deities. The powerful artwork within the liner notes is, quite naturally, revolutionary. The album also has powerful lyrics concerning religion, politics, and the effects of violence (both physical and psychological). I do find that, unfortunately and unusually, some lyrics seem to be superficial in their focus, though this is certainly not the case for the majority of the record.
The album runs a full 79 minutes and is 23 tracks long, and is sprinkled with a few short songs; a great characteristic of Tori's records. I would imagine that the lyrics to the shorter tracks (most of which run just under or over a minute in length) are particularly significant, being songs in and of themselves. For example, the complete lyrics to the 11th track are,
"Devils and gods, now that's an idea / But if we believe that it's they who decide / that's the ultimate detractor of crimes / `cause devils and gods / they are you and I / devils and gods / they are you and I / devils and gods / safe and inside."
So, is Tori a Witch? Well, maybe. I would argue that she is at least Pagan to a large extent, even if she wouldn't admit it. For example, Tori's 1994 music video for "God," a track from the album Under the Pink, shows her crouched and veiled, cupping her hands to a burning candle in which a needle is pricked straight through--a scene that could have been a direct reenactment of the illustration in the Farrars' classic A Witches' Bible. Then, on one of the thank-you messages on the back of a Scarlet's Walk era CD, Tori says "Blessed Be" to a friend. It's obvious that she at least knows a bit about the Craft!
Those, in addition to the song "Secret Spell" on this album, actually add to my case about Tori's possible Witchery! I also find it pretty nifty that one of her theme characters is equipped with a medicine bag and a sage bundle--reminiscent of native and shamanic magick--and another with a chicken--quite reminiscent of Vodou magick.
American Doll Posse proves to be a good middle ground between Tori's "harder" and more confrontational music, and her "softer" and more lulling tunes.

1 out of 5 stars A dreadful piece of "bubblegum pop" crap........2007-08-03

I've sampled/downloaded a good majority of the songs on this album. After having heard all the songs I realized that it was a complete waste of my time.

This crap is worse than even her first album. I thought Avril's second was a very nice improvement and it showed that she had some talent. But THIS is just plain horrible. "Girlfriend"? Please. It's completely unappealing and I believe that the only reason anyone over the age of 11 would like it is because it's got a "beat" to it.

That beat from "Girlfriend" is pretty much the same exact thing, more or less, in every other damn song on the record.

I would not recommend this CD to anyone except young girls... like, in the "tween" age.

3 out of 5 stars Pop up.......2007-07-08

This, Avril's third album, is a bit more upbeat and a bit less angsty than her last attempt. As with both her previous albums, The Best Damn Thing is an album that I find best to cherry pick for the songs I like. With my five favorites from this album, there is enough material over her three albums to put together a pretty decent showing. But there are still 2-3 songs on this album that I won't ever listen to again.

2 out of 5 stars A talented artist wasted........2007-07-06

The Best Damn Thing by Avril Lavigne is a sad and pathetic album. I liked Avril's Let Go and Under My Skin discs but her third album is as silly as the title itself. I think Avril has a wonderful, strong voice and an average songwriter but I don't know what has happened to her. I guess marriage softened her but this new bubble gum image and that blonde hair has got to go. She has so much talented and she's just throwing it away. It's so disappointing with lyrics like, "hey, hey, hey you I don't like your girlfriend, I think you need a new one..." Hopefully my little Candianan will knock it out of the park on her next album. Don't waste your time and money on this trash!

5 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2007-07-03

This is a different approach for Avril compared to her first two albums. It sounds like she has been listening to some Toni Basil, because there is a good bit of cheerleader like musicical influences in the sound she is putting out now. Combine that with the more raw punk attitude of the skate parks and a large amount of teen angst, and you get this album.

Originally I purchaed the censored version of this album, but realized I could not stand the censoring that was going on. The blanks in the singing just threw me off. Within two weeks of listening to the censored version, I ordered the uncensored one, and haven't gone back since.

4 out of 5 stars All out fun power pop........2007-07-01

"Girlfriend" was logically the first single from this CD. It's the best. Yes, it's a throwback to that "Hey Mickey" stuff (although it rocks more) but I liked "Hey Mickey". Does every freakin song have to be serious? Can't we just have fun listening to music once in a while?

There are 4 or 5 tracks that could easily be singles on the CD and they probably will become just that. Her label will likely milk this for a few years.

Compared to her last two it's somewhat a mix of the styles. The more pop-oriented of her first and the harder-edged sounds of her second CD (which I didn't care much for).

It's kind of a nice mix. You don't get too much of either. :)

On the other hand, I much preferred her first CD so to me this is much like a return to that sound.

A few of the tracks are more "punk" than I like, but those same tracks will likely appeal to many of her fans.

If you like Avril, then you must buy this CD (however, you probably already have).

    Album Description

On July 27, 1990, Johnny Cash took his revue to The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and performed a truly unique and wonderful concert, captured on multi-tracks that lay dormant until recently mixed and edited for this near hour-long CD. Terrific performances of his greatest hits are here I Walk The Line, Ring Of Fire, etc. A wonderfully upbeat Cash and wife June Carter Cash's stories and introductions punctuate the music; June contributes a boisterous Jackson duet with Johnny; local songstress Lucy Clark duets on the first performance anywhere at the time of Johnny's What Is Man?; and the singer performs the only recorded version anywhere of the classic gospel song Wonderful Time Up There. A great lost performance is found.

All hail the return of novelty music's reigning king! Straight Outta Lynwood easily bests 2003's Poodle Hat and shows that Yankovic does know what he does best. Part of the secret to Weird Al's success is that he's never been very weird at all, and very rarely are his satires in any way "biting"--or even satires, really. The 11-minute parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" is funny at least for the first listen, but it's hard to ridicule something so largely ridiculous in the first place (plus Jimmy Kimmel totally got the jump on him). The best thing Mr. Yankovic has always done is to take some decent pop tune, change a word or phrase, invent an entirely new premise for the tune, and make an inspired video to go along with it. He does that several times here; Green Day's "American Idiot" becomes the hockey-obsessed "Canadian Idiot," and "White & Nerdy" is a truly inspired take on Chamillionaire's "Ridin'." That song (and video, included here on the dual-disc CD/DVD) is breakneck-paced and so funny it's a disservice to quote from it at all. "Polkarama!" is a return to W.A.'s novelty roots: a handful of mildly dated hit songs (50 Cent to Modest Mouse!) delivered in straight-ahead, sped-up polka style. It's toe-tapping and sweet. Hopefully we'll not have to wait three years for another Weird Al record. --Mike McGonigal

    5 out of 5 stars I almost died laughing........2007-06-28

I listened to this album for the first time tonight. Eleven years ago tonight, a friend got us tickets to a Weird Al concert. While driving home from the concert, we had a car accident and he died. After the first verse of "I'll Sue Ya," I seriously wondered if I might die laughing and join him!

I'll go through track by track:
White and Nerdy: Funny, I've heard this before so it didn't seem as new, but as a computer programmer I got a lot of good laughs. And I do hand-code HTML4!
Pancreas: Another novelty artist named Mindless Drug Hoover released a song with the same name and a similar concept. I wondered if by some weird hand of Eris, Weird Al had done the same song, but nope! He did something even more insane, even tying in things like gravity.
Canadian Idiot: I don't listen to much pop music, so haven't heard the originals, but another fun song making fun of racism. Everyone bags on Canadians anyway. One note: Weird Al even parodies the war.
I'll Sue Ya: Okay, here we go, definitely a favorite song. As said, after the first verse I wondered if I would join my friend, and if I could even handle a second verse! I did leave Earthlink, because I became dissatisfied with their tech support, so that struck a chord. Everyone has had issues with Verizon. And don't even mention New Jersey! I see this listed as an original song, but it sounds like a song done in the style of Rage against the Machine. Perfect! I really enjoy it when he doesn't parody a song per se, but parodies a group or style. This has always brought out his creativity. Sadly, some of the ridiculous things he yells out have actually happened (a guy sued someone for breaking his ankle while robbing his place.) I love this song!
Polkarama: Another classic Polka tune. As said I don't listen to much popular music, so for me these Polka songs provide a good insulated way to absorb the dirtier music of this time. I'll stick with these versions!
Virus Alert: Another great computer song! The main part would make a great sound alert. It has one of those catchy melodies and concepts that will just stay in your head for days, especially the next time your antivirus software alerts you with a new update! Virus Alert! (You could, of course, just use Linux, but we'll save that for another rant.)
Confession Part III: I don't know if he parodied a song here, or simply parodied the style of the current music, but either way he did a hilarious job. Every guy will love the last spoken line of the song.
Weasel Stomping Day: A little silly song, not much to say, but have fun!
Close but No Cigar: Okay, now I have a confession to make. I downloaded this album on bittorrent, and this song didn't play, so I did not hear it. I feel doubly glad I bought the CD.
Do I Creep You Out: Okay, I've heard the original, but can't put my finger on it. In a silly way, I consider this a song from every guy to every girl!
Trapped in the Drive Thru: I've heard the original referenced, and saw the South Park episode, an can imagine the original. This song treks in at around eleven minutes, and it does sort of go on, fut for me, this just added to the theme of the song, a tedius hunger-driven trip to the drive thru.
Don't Download this Song: A great capper for the album. Doubly funny since my downloaded copy missed a track, as if to underscore the point. It reminds me of the South Park episode which covered this theme. Buy my CD so I can afford a diamond-studded swimming pool. Classic!

In summary, I love this album, and consider it one of his best. I know my friend would have loved it too! Through various events, I know Weird Al as a very compassionate human being, and in his own way, a visionary.

4 out of 5 stars It will have you ROTFLOL........2007-06-24

I've been a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic for 24 years now. After all these years, he's still as funny as ever (or perhaps my sense of humor hasn't matured since I was a teenager). If you are a fan of Al, you pretty much know what you're going to get on an album; about an equal number of parodies and original songs, plus a polka medley of recent hits. Hey, it's a proven formula, so why mess with it? This is a very funny album. "White & Nerdy" is probably the funniest song, but all of them are at least somewhat funny. Go and buy the CD like you know that you should.

5 out of 5 stars "Weird Al" comes "Straight Outta Lynwood" and right onto the Billboard charts.......2007-06-10

I picked up this CD because "Weird Al" Yankovic is coming to town and I have tickets to go with my daughters (do not tell them, but we have seats in the front row, just left of center so I can hear with my one good ear). When I was a kid most of the records I had were Smothers Brothers records, I had a teacher who played Spike Jones songs for us, my father taped several Allan Sherman albums for us, and in college I discovered Dr. Demento and Tom Lehrer (not necessarily in that order). So I am a big fan of musical parodies and there can be no doubt that Yankovic is the Shakespeare of that peculiar little niche of the music business. I consider "The Saga Begins" to be his magnum opus and in looking at his body of work what is impressive is not only his longevity but the way his work has improved from those early days when it was just him on accordion and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz banging on the accordion case.

It turns out that "Straight Outta Lynwood" is Yankovic's most successful album of all time and his most successful single with "White & Nerdy" making it all the way to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Eat It" was his previous top single which made it to #12). I still think "Running With Scissors" is his best album, but I am definitely heartened to know Yankovic is going strong. With albums coming out every three or four years he appears to have found his stride. There is the obligatory polka medley and several new style parodies, with "Pancreas" (Brian Wilson), "I'll Sue Ya" (Rage Against the Machine), "Virus Alert" (Sparks), "Close But No Cigar" (Cake), and "Don't Download This Song" (fundraiser songs). The surprise is that I liked the style parodies more than I did the parodies of particular songs, which is obviously turning my "Weird Al" universe upside down.

My only problem with this album is clearly my personal problem because with the exception of "Canadian Idiot" I had to look at the liner notes to find out which songs were parodies and which were originals. The fact that I had not heard (or perhaps only not remembered) "White & Nerdy" is a parody of "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire (featuring Krayzie Bone) was received with jaw-dropping astonishment by my daughters. I am down to recognizing only three songs out of 14 in the album's pokla medley, "Polkarama!" ("Let's Get it Started," "Don't Cha," and "Pon de Replay"). I had forgotten that Taylor Hicks had done "Do I Make You Proud," but I do not think I am alone in that regard. But I had no idea "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" is based on a R. Kelly song, although I did recognize Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" when it popped up.

Flip over the CD and you get to the DVD, which has animated videos for all of the original songs, namely: "Don't Download This Song," "I'll Sue Ya," "Virus Alert," "Close But No Cigar," "Pancreas" and "Weasel Stomping Day." The videos for "White & Nerdy," "Do I Creep Your Out," "Canadian Idiot," and "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" are all for parodies and for some reason that justified exclusion (insert pout here). The videos are followed by a short documentary that simply shows Yankovic and his band recording some of the songs and paying testament to his attention to detail. You can also listen to the entire album with the lyrics as subtitles, each song accompanied by a photograph of Yankovic from infancy to young adulthood (his parents liked the triple image option). Finally, you can do the karaoke function and get the music and the lyrics so you can sing the songs yourself. Consequently, there are enough extras here to justify rounding up on the disc overall.

Concert Update: So last night "Weird Al" came to town and as I suspected they set up two rows in the orchestra pit for winners of radio contests for tickets (sigh). But during one of the songs (that does not appear on any of the albums) he came down in the audience. Al was singing to the women in the audience but when he was walking in front of it was all dads and kids, so he sang to my oldest daughter (she just got accepted into the Peace Corp to go do what she wants to do where she wants to do it so she is having a good week). We also picked up over a thousand dollars in "Weird Al" money. For the record, he does complete versions of five songs from this album (1, 3, 4, 5, 9), excerpts from three more (7, 10, 11), and one music video (8).

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-05-29

I'll be the first to admit that some of these songs DID NOT catch on with me right away!! In fact at first I thought this would be the first Weird Al Album I bought that I would not enjoy very much.... I WAS WRONG!!! After a few listens these songs really grew on me!!
I loved "White and Nerdy" straight away (I am White and Nerdy accorging to my wife) and the song nails a few asects of the nerd culture that I perssonally have seen or experienced so it was quite a treat!
"Pancreas" is an AWESOME tribute to Brian Wilson and his style of music (if you are too young to know who Mr. Wilson is....listen to the beach boys and check out some of his own albums).
I also thought "Canadian Idiot" was great!! Being a Floridian and knowing a bunch of seasonal Canadians it was rather funny and hit home!!
Close But No Cigar was an excellent song that was an abvious style parody of CAKE. Loved the words to the song and the little flaws that made him break up with each gorgeous woman!!
I could list reasons for liking all the songs but I don't want to take up too much space!! Let me just say that you will love this album as long as you give it a chance!!
Don't forget to visit Weird Al's website and get the free parody "You're Pitiful" (parody of "You're Beautiful") which was originally going to be on the album but was tanked at the last minute do to record company lawyers.

One more thing. This album is a dual disc. One side plays as a DVD the other as a CD. This disc MAY NOT play in certain drives or DC players so just be careful!!
    The videos were hilarious though!!

    5 out of 5 stars "That's not why I bought this album".......2007-05-26

I'm here to tell ya, there are a lot very good reasons to buy this album. But most of them are not why I bought this album.

Sure Al's parodies are all great fun, but that's not why I bought this album. Sure this whole album is fraught with hilarity, but that's not why a bought this album. I didn't even buy this album because of all the cool video's included. IT'S THE MUSIC, MAN. That's why I bought this album. Can this Al guy sing or what - even if he is a little weird. (Although, I'm not too sure about the weird part, but that's what Al keeps telling everyone so I'll go along with it.)

Case in point; So there I was, sitting in my mini van at a red light, jamming to the music, not really paying any attention to the lyrics, just enjoying the sounds the band and singers were putting out. With my head bobbin' to the beat and hands drumming on the steering wheel, I noticed an elderly lady in the car next to me looking my way. She seemed to have an air of disdain about her at seeing a gentleman of my years acting like some dang fool kid. That very moment is when my ears picked up on the words "I blew my nose and wiped it on your cat". The lyric caught me totally off guard and I spontaneously burst into laughter. Seeing that, the lady snapped her head forward, stomped on the accelerator and speed through the red light trying to get away from that dang fool (being myself) as fast as she could.

Well, I guess that probably isn't why you should by this album either, but I can tell ya... This double CD sure is a lot of fun and you will absolutely enjoy the music.

Which is not to say the masterminds of this consistently popular series have scuttled their mission to consider kids first--only that they've gotten very, very smart about assembling discs that satisfy a universal appetite for playful pop. Consider the cross-generational gems they've laid out this time: Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," Rascal Flatt's "Life Is a Highway," and Natahsa Bedingfield's "Unwritten" round out such kid-centric but extremely digestable nuggets as the High School Musical cast's "Start of Something New" and Hannah Montana's "If We Were a Movie." There are moments when the producers' motives seem suspect--did they throw on that T-Squad track not because it's a hit but because they want to call attention to an up-and-coming Disney act?--but overall 9 is a shrewd step in the right direction for the series. The days of "The Hampster Dance Song," mercifully, appear to be done. --Tammy La Gorce

The Book of Genesis tells us that God created "the evening and the morning" on the third day. It's hard to say when is the best time to listen to this southern Christian rock act's rousing tunes, though morning is likely the best, as their anthemic alt-rock is filled with enough praise and worship to get even the most jaded listener through the day. In their 11-year recording history, the band has built up a loyal fanbase, won Dove and Grammy awards, and spent innumerable miles on the road. On Chronology, Vol. 1, Third Day looks back at the first half of their career with a dual CD/DVD disc with characteristic generosity. A handful of live and rare numbers round out new mixes of hits like "Forever" and "I've Always Loved You," while two of their most-loved early numbers, "My Hope Is You" and "Thief," have been entirely re-recorded. The DVD is the real meat here, with five early music videos, six live performances from the Dove shows, and excerpts from eight handheld videos made by fans, which all show how hard these guys can kick it. This is no paint-by-numbers best-of, but an awesome tribute that will satisfy devoted fans and the newly curious alike. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Great...even if you already have everything else!.......2007-07-23

I have most of Third Day's other CDs and DVDs but I still bought this CD/DVD even though I already have most of the songs included here. I love the songs so much that the alternate arrangements or live versions give me a chance to appreciate the songs all over again.

I would say that THIS is the CD to introduce other folks to Third Day...but I could say that about all the other ones I've listened to since starting with "Come Together" a few years back.

They're also a fantastic band to see live if you get the chance!

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat this if you're a 3rd Day fan or not one yet.......2007-07-18

I have all their old CDs so there was no epiphany for me on hearding this new collection, but it's a solid assortment of past hits that can't be faulted.

The video DVD alone is worth the purchase price for the 2-disk set. Seeing the band evolve from their jumpy-punk early videos to GMA spots then on to smooth recent stuff is priceless! Cry out to Jesus still makes me cry.

    3 thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Third Day At Their Best.......2007-07-12

To all Third Day fans, this CD is a must have. It is not just the original songs placed on one CD and re-released, but the guys have gone to the trouble of re-recording all the tracks on this CD. And it's an awesome result.

The DVD that comes with the CD is also good value. You get to see the guys in their element, just worshipping God with out any inhibitions.

If you love Third Day's music then you will not be disappointed with this venture. I highly recommend you buy this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars XLNT!.......2007-05-15

Let me start off by saying Third Day's Cronology volume 1 is a fantastic dc/dvd! You are definately getting you're money's worth! Not only are you getting an audio cd packed with hitsongs, rarities, and live performances, you're also gonna a dvd full of realy neat stuff! I'd like to tell you a little about the cd first. The audio portian of this package contains 18 tracks, most of whitch are not available elswhere. You get remixes of songs from the band's debut album simply entitled "Third Day" as well as a newly recorded verssion of"Thief" You get stuff from their 2nd 3rd, and 4th albums, as well as previously unreleased live performances of "Black Bird" and "Alien" There's also a newly recorded verssion of "My Hope is You" But wait there's more! You also get tracks from a rare 1999 ep. Still not convinced this a bargin? The dvd features early videos, live performances, and bootleg videos from the early 90s before Third Day was signed to a record deal. But I'm not quite finished yet! There's also audio commentary from the band durring the early videos and the bootlegs. So there you have it! everything that comes in this wonderful package. I think that Chronology vol 1 is an outstanding retrospective on Third Day's early, as well as an absolute bargin for the price even if you pay fullprice. Trust me you're getting your $'s worth. PS Be on the lookout for Chronology vol2 release date August 17th 2007 Thanks for reading my review. K C stewart
