4 out of 5 stars Just as I remembered it........2007-05-10

Though it is now a little dated, this CD has held up well. It's still exciting, and it was done without all of today's technology!

5 out of 5 stars Blast From The Past.......2005-12-21

Normally when I think of "World Music" I want to stick my finger down my throat and gag, but in this case... I only bring this up because I have seen Osibisa classified in the World Music genre and I hate to categorize them that way, however accurate it may be.

I got this album in the early seventies because of the album cover alone. That was enough to pique my interest. The music was surely not what I expected but it has a groove to it that I liked. This album was especially good with heavy incense, a black light, and that cover done over in dayglo paint. The good old days!

I have not heard this or their first album in thirty years yet I can still remember the melody to Woyaya. I suppose if you are a World Music freak then this album is for you. They were original, and they were unique and there has never been anything quite like them since. The combination of Wendell Richardson and Teddy Osei had magic that still shines through today. To me, Osibisa is the exception to the rule and I highly recommend them even for rockers!

5 out of 5 stars "Back in time".......2005-10-26

This is an excellent music and is able to take you back in time to remember. Great experience, and is still able to make your heart beat faster.

5 out of 5 stars Better have good speakers.......2004-11-10

This is one CD that I use to test speakers. Fire up Survival, turn up the volume, if they can handle this, they are fine. Why you ask? Because this is meant to be played loud, and the bass will rattle a room. WARNING if you rent, don't try this at home. Beautiful 7, and the uplifting ending cut Woyaya make this a must have for world music fans.

5 out of 5 stars BEYOND AWESOME!.......2004-05-27

This has got to be one of my all time favorite albums! I have been listening to it since my brother brought it home from his friends house after the album first came out. My brother's friend got it from his own brother who worked at a radio station so I think it was a promotional album. I still have the vinyl album. In fact,I was so impressed with not only the music but also the cover artwork that I had the flying elephant TATTOOED ON MY BACK!! I feel this is their best album but it has been quite awhile since I have heard any of their other music. The songs on this album have been stuck in my head for over 30 years and I never get tired of them. Another album that I would recommend is "Flaming Drums" by Olatunji. This album was made in 1962 on Columbia records. I bought it at a yard sale or used record store in 1969 or 1970[or there-abouts] and have been enjoying it ever since. I cannot wait to get them both on cd so I can enjoy them in my vehicles. Broaden your musical horizons and buy this music.

Short-lived but legendary, Cymande is oft-compiled on funk assemblages, but this CD of their first two LPs is altogether necessary, even if the music moves away from tight beats into Rasta-folk toward the end. Cymande's reputation has grown considerably over the last twenty years. Featuring a multi-national crew with a strong Caribbean influence, the band produced a few hits in the early seventies, then disappeared. But the epochal "Brothers On the Side," and the ingeniously structured "Fug" contain a subtlety and tension lacking in all but the best bands of the era. As usual, the Collectables label's sound quality is passable, but nothing to brag about. --D. Strauss

5 out of 5 stars Tenacious Grooves.......2006-03-16

Bra on the 25th Hour soundtrack Fug, The Message sampled by modern hip-hop artistes.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of Past life Music.......2005-08-23

When I was younger, I bought this album on a whim. Once I had heard it and played it over and over again, I was hooked. As I listen to the current CD, I hear cuts that were not on the original album. They do not disappoint but reaffirms that the original record and cuts for this particular album contain the richer sound of this group.Their better work. It identified them for me as an "outsider band" with something unique to say.
As time past I lost sight of them but not interest. I am refreshed to hear the wale, whine and harmony of CYMANDE once again.

3 out of 5 stars Do yourself another favor.......2005-08-04

And avoid this album. This is a second rate reissue. It has poor sound quality. And this CD was not remastered.

Cymande - Renegades of Funk is remastered and has 3 unreleased bonus tracks. I recently bought that record. And the hit track Bra absolutely bumps. The rest of the album flows very nicely. Peace and love the dove cymande.

4 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2005-07-08

If you liked the music in 25th Hour but couldn't find it on the soundtrack, here it is. I'm not sure what category this music falls under, but I seem to really enjoy it. Bra being my favorite song on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air.......2005-05-12

This is a compilation of the first three Cymande records. The songs aren't in any particular order, no pictures are included, and not much information is given, but this doesn't matter, I bought it for the music. If you want a collection of soulful, spiritual, funky music, this is a good one. Great bass grooves, beautiful guitar licks, crazy drum rythms, and meaningful vocals are all over this one. "Brothers on the Slide", "Bra", and "The Message" have grooves you can't get rid of and "Dove" and "One More" are beautiful instrumentals. This cd contains hardcore funk jams, beautiful soulful instumentals, and a few folk songs. There may be a better compilation out there, but this one works for me. I can personally think of a few songs that should have been included on this one, but you can't please everyone. Nothing fancy, just good music.

5 out of 5 stars How could I have possibly forgotten how good this is.......2005-07-26

Like many of the other reviewers here, I first heard this band/album back in early 70's. Their music is simply great, the energy, the talent - everything. I'm listening to it again after a too long hiatus (it's on my vinyl collection) and I'm stunned - how could I have forgotten this music - I'm ordering their CDs. My siblings will instantly break into smiles at the mention of the phrase "Osibisa - crisscross rythyms that explode with happiness" and then they'll repeat the line "we gonna start this happy vibes right from the root, and the root is early one morning in the heart of Africa." If you like earlier Santana, I'm pretty sure you'll like this - it's different, more African with a twist of Caribbean - but most of all it is just fun.

5 out of 5 stars Osibisa from Africa.......2005-07-18

One night in 1970 lying in my bed inside my psychedelic room listening to my Panasonic/Quadraphonic (forerunner of the surround sound today) component set. I heard on the FM radio station the complete two albums "Osibisa/Woyaya", I was so impressed with their music that the following day I ran to the store to buy both albums! At the time the Santana band was my favorite band. However, Osibisa with their unique African sound became another favorite band of mine. The percussion and the rhythms make you feel you are in Africa. Today I still collect their CD's and listen to the music that once brought the savage out of me; I'll see you later bwanna!

5 out of 5 stars Mottsibisa.......2004-07-23

'Osibisa' was formed in London, England in 1969 by a multi-racial group of musicians; all with the same interests in music. The nucleus of the band was from Ghana, others, like the unbelievable guitarist Wendell Richardson, came from Antigua; the bass player who was simply known as Spartacus (I'm Spartacus!) was from Grenada; the keyboard player from Trinidad; and the saxophonist was from Nigeria. However, what they all had in common was great musical rhythm, enthusiasm, and ability. Their music was borrowed from Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, African based drum music, Rock, Pop, and Latin Groove, to create quite an original sound.

In Ghanaian 'Osibisa' means 'criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness'. Now, how one word can say all that I do not know, but that is exactly how the music sounds, and they are the very words that introduce the first song on this, Osibisa's first, album aptly titled "Dawn".

Like a breath of fresh air, Osibisa's music first came to prominence with the release of their first single "Music for Gong Gong'', included here on their first album, which was released at the tail end of 1970. It is a piece of music that will get even the most conservative of souls out boogieing on the dance floor. So it was great expectations when their first album was released in the early days of 1971 and the boys did not disappoint, arriving as it did when Prog-Rock was in its heyday. Each of these percussive driven songs blew away all the pretensions of those serious minded twiddlers in the likes of Yes, King Crimson, etc. Osibisa's unbridled enthusiasm was so infectious, you could not help but be dragged along by the sheer exuberance of it all.

Although Osibisa's main strength was in their live concerts, they could also drum up a storm (quite literally) in the studio. Nobody at the time could have realized how influential their music was going to be in years ahead. Osibisa today is still known as the Godfather of 'World Music', and the effect of their big hit single "Sunshine Day" (1975) was to change the disco scene for ever. But this, their first album, was to set the template of the Osibisa sound for eternity. The band is still going today, albeit with only two of the seven original members left, which actually is not bad by today's standards considering that the band is now in their 35th year.

Many of the songs on this collection are still in the band's live repertoire today. Like all good albums, the songs on this set play like a live concert. Opener "Dawn", which begins with the immortal translation of Osibisa, builds on a rhythm of percussion until giving way to let the individual soloist bring the song to a rousing conclusion - some seven and a half minutes later. You then get five other songs of criss-cross rhythms before being brought to a riotous climax by "Think About The People".

When a band starts off its career with such a strong album, it is often difficult to keep up the standards set by its debut (especially with an ever changing line-up - Wendell Richardson, the band?s simply stunning lead guitarist, was at one stage lured away by British rockers "Free"). So it is perhaps true to say that Osibisa's studio output has been a little patchy since then, although their live concerts have never been short of marvelous, always led by Teddy Osei out front on drums, sax, fluttering flute, and vocals. This, their first album, is nothing short of a diamond. A must buy for anybody who likes a shot of fun with their music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09

My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.

This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!

The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.

3 out of 5 stars Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05

Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.

TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.

Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").

While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.

Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).

Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.

Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.

Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Jazz with tropical percussion........2006-03-25

I first encountered this group when I was in collage in the early seventies. I was impressed an bought both of these albums when they were on LP vinyl. Since I have played the he** out of them, they are now so worn they don't play well any more. I was thrilled to find them available on CD (no where but Amazon) and they sound better than ever. Anyone who loved Jazz needs to check these guys out.

2 out of 5 stars Great Albums - However These Are NOT Remastered!.......2005-10-15

I've been a long time fan of Osibisa, since the '70s. That's when I bought Woyaya and Heads.

This 2 album set consists of the titles Osibisa and Woyaya. I had never heard the Osibisa album before. It's surprisingly good. The main reason I purchased this CD set was to get a pristine version of Woyaya. Unfortunately I was sorely disappointed with this CD.

I listened to every track from the originally mastered CD, released in 1993 and compared it to this 2004 "remastered" version. There was absolutely no difference that I could detect between the two! The album still sounds muddy and dull, not clean and bright as I would expect from a decent remastering job.

If it wasn't for the Osibisa album I would consider this to have been a complete waste of money - though the sound on that album is none too good either.

My 2 star rating is not because of the music which is great, but because of the high price with poor sound quality. Give me nice Woyaya remastering and I'd gladly give this CD 5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars 70's Old School Funk - Fabulous!.......2007-03-26

My husband Loved it! It was a gift for his 40th birthday. We are from the old school and it's refreshing to know you can still find this stuff on Amazon so you can hear the original in all its glory! It's amazing how most of the songs have been sampled by today's artists a million times over and no one knows the history of who made them.

5 out of 5 stars Essential World Funk.......2006-01-24

It's strange the way I find great music. I first heard Cymande watching the Spike Lee movie 25th Hour on cable. I can't remember the plot but I do remember hearing just a piece of Cymande's song Bra being played in a club scene. From that bit alone I was hooked.

Cymande is a unique mixture of funk, reggae, African pop and American soul. At times they sound like Santana at other times it's Curtis Mayfield. But the combination of influences and the musicians' skill makes them unique. Bassist Steve Scipio deserves much credit for his targeted playing but an awesome horn section doesn't hurt either.

Since this collection has all three albums Cymande made, it is essential.

    Album Description

The most rare of Osibisa's releases, originally only released in Africa.

    Album Description

Osibisa's self-titled album opened up their unique blend of African and Western styled music to a wider audience, charting in both the U.S. and Europe. Produced by Tony Visconti, Osibisa's extraordinary merger of African drum beats, colorful rhythms, and rock-inspired keyboard and horn parts give it an expansive sound that infuses countless musical influences. Even the melodies take bits of rhythm & blues and modern rock and affix them to the accompanying percussion beats to come up with a contemporary feel with an avant-garde atmosphere. Tracks such as 'Dawn,' 'Phallus C,' and 'Oranges' incorporate fragments of traditional jazz and jazz fusion mainly because of the flute and saxophone into their core, but then fashions the result to resemble the band's true heritage. Each song conjures up a certain African mysticism with its stressed rhythms and semi-primordial tempos. The

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Album.......2004-09-27

My friend Lee S_____ loaned me the tape cassette of this album back around 1982. The title cut has been floating around in my mind since then. After looking for a copy of this for years, I was pleased to see that it was available again. After listening to it repeatedly, I think that this CD is as good as I remembered it to be.

2 out of 5 stars Selections great, sound quality not........2002-07-12

I currently own nine cds by the famous group and Celebration was the first one I bought. While I was pleased with the selection of songs on the cd I was disappointed with the sound quality. The entire recording sounded as though it was done under a heavy blanket and subsequently I gave the cd away. I'd like to know if subsequent releases sound better.

    5 out of 5 stars Celebrate!.......2001-02-05

Do you like highlife, ska, rai, zouk, funk, with good old r&b thrown in? If so, you need to add Celebration to your collection. This album brings you some classic Osibisa (like the evocative Woyaya) along with newer (though lighter) tracks. The combination has something for everyone. You'll soon be transported not only to another place and time, but to a level not visited by many. If you drink your music, allowing it's intoxifying effects to take you new highs, as it touches the depth of your soul, then this album is for you.
