Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The title of this CD is mildly misleading as this collection is not strictly homegrown Latin in its focus. There are also tracks by Manzanita, a Spanish Roma (Gypsy) player famous for his rumba flamenca (this is what the Gipsy Kings play); Kaoma (a group famous--or infamous--for its high-profile participation in the lambada craze); and Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese star with an Afro-Cuban style redolent of Kinshasa during the 1960s. That being said, it is unlikely that these 10 tracks will disappoint anyone. It's prime stuff, ranging from Colombia's Toto La Momposina to Oscar de Leon from Venezuela, to the Bay Area's own Conjunto Céspedes. Latin music is a complicated subject and many would-be listeners are too intimidated to try it. This album was compiled by a fan, rather than a pundit, with a naive enthusiasm that's certain to help beginners feel relaxed enough for further explorations. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars A Real Winner.......2007-06-02

The title says it all. Every song is a winner and this CD contains the best.

5 out of 5 stars Top quality Salsa in an unforgettable selection.......2007-05-25

As you can see, it would result unuseful any speech about the quality and historical significance of all these top songs and also about the artists (all of them stars around the world). Everyone is a must-have song in any collection of this kind of music. It is a lovely selection recorded with original sound and in a very danceable sequence. Very difficult to say what is better than other but the only song a little bit "out-of-focus" is "Lloraras" because of that it has been recorded live and the sound is not original (but excellently interpreted by Oscar de Leon, as well). Strongly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!.......2007-04-25

This is a release that has got to be heard...a smoker front to back. Every single track included is among the best salsa ever, every single track is on the mark. All of the songs were top hits on their own and are now included here in one cd. The line-up alone is testament to it's dancing power. The songs in this cd have both Puerto Rico's grooving criollo style of salsa and New York's funkier, jazzy style. From New York City: Ruben Blades, Cheo Feliciano, Hector Lavoe; Jose 'El Canario' Alberto; Tito Puente/Tony Vega; Richie Ray; Larry Harlow; Ismael Miranda. From Puerto Rico, Marvin Santiago; Willie Rosario; Frankie Ruiz; Andy Montanez; Orquesta La Solucion; Tommy Olivencia. Lastly, from Venezuela the great, Oscar D'Leon makes an appearance to round out the cast to get "your feet a poppin and da booty hoppin". You owe to yourself to check this one out. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A MUST-HAVE!.......2006-06-22

This is one of the best salsa cd's. It has the best artists and the best songs all in one album, which is hard to find now days. Compared to other salsa cd's I have bought this is the most complete by far.....

Mi Sangre meets--and often exceeds--the glittering standards set by its predecessors. The album fuses the best elements of Juanes' previous works, Un Dia Normal and Fijate Bien, to create a collection that is exciting, energetic and thought-provoking. Lead-off single "Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor" ("I'm Worthless Without Your Love") is a bittersweet mix of alternately hopeful and sad lyrics ("That's why I want your love, always strong in my mind/Even if we are far, or even if we are near, in the end") that could be a simple declaration of amor or a love letter from a war-time soldier. Social issues are highlighted throughout Mi Sangre, which finds Juanes directly addressing Colombian warfare. "What's happening in the world today," he asks amid the passionate rock rhythms of "Que Pasa," "that in all the dailies I read the same news of horror, lives that fall without reason?" Mi Sangre is a compulsive listen, with surprises at every turn. Juanes gets flirty during "Damelo," which finds him sizing up a potential lover; and "Para Tu Amor" is a swoon-inducing pop ballad that glitters with optimism. Producer Gustavo Santaolalla knows his way around the alt-rock world, having worked with Maldita Vecindad, Café Tacuba, Molotov, and Julieta Venegas. He co-produced Jaunes' previous albums, and the pair's synergy is nothing short of exceptional. "Tu Guardian," the album closer, is a sweet lullaby that seems tailor-made for Jaunes' eight-month-old daughter, Luna. It's here that Juanes' electric display of blood, sweat, and tears proves why Mi Sangre is one of the year's best releases. --Joey Guerra

I really enjoyed this CD. He has an outstanding voice and it was a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2007-01-11

Juanes, hitherto unkown in the United States, has shown that Spanish-language, and non-American at that, artists can make just as much a splash on our charts as anyone. This award-winning album is nice cross section of Juanes's talents as a musician.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyment from beginning to end.......2007-01-10

I have heard only a couple of Juane's songs on the radio. I purchased this CD for the Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor song. It was a pleasant blend of romantic, yet hip pop songs. He's got a very original sound. The beats and styles were interesting.

Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes's second solo album is many things: poetic, lyrical, heartfelt, and intelligent. Ordinary, however, would not be among the list of adjectives. The humble title, Un Dia Normal, is more a description of the album's overall themes. It's a slicker and catchier collection than Juanes's politically minded 2000 album Fijate Bien, which earned seven Latin Grammy nominations and tons of critical attention. Un Dia Normal finds the former member of rock outfit Ekhymosis contemplating an array of inner emotions--primarily life, love, and loss--all anchored by Gustavo Santaolalla's tight, precise production work. "La Unica" is a sweet and tuneful love letter, while "Mala Gente" finds Juanes damning a cruel lover to hell--literally. "A Dios le Pido" is an intoxicating swirl of cumbia, reggae, and folk rhythms, but it's the bittersweet duet "Fotografia" that truly soars. Juanes's unassuming vocal style is the perfect complement to Canadian songbird Nelly Furtado's lilting soprano, creating a shining moment among an already impressive collection of gems. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Love him :-().......2006-01-14

I've loved Juanes since about 2001 when I saw him on the Latin Grammy's. I love Latin music and he's amazing (and hot too). His voice is great and the music is terrific. Sure, I don't necessarily know what he's singing about, but it sounds romantic and beautiful. My favourite song is A Dios Le Pido. It's great. I've got a couple of his cds, but this is the best of his. For all Latin lovers, go get this.

5 out of 5 stars Juggernaut.......2005-12-19

Juanes' chameleon like sophomore album is a lively, youthful, highly emotional, musical spree driven by masterful guitar and his evocative, soothing yet distinctly rock voice. It's one of the few albums of any musical artist I own that I can listen to straight through.

He has a slew of mellow latino pop ballads on here, immensely listenable and fresh, "Es Por Ti", "Una Dia Normal", "Dia Lejano". Perfect songs for unwinding or a leisurely drive somewhere.

Then you have his experimental batch, "La Unica" (dark until it changes halfway like a break of hopeful light through the clouds), "La Paga" (a cheeky slightly reggae-ish chant), "Luna" (bouncy and fun), "La Historia de Juan" (more on this later). Driving latin rock (and dance!) songs come in the shape of "La Noche" which sounds just like you'd imagine it to (although it should have an exclamation point at the end of the title), "Desde Que Despierto" a pop-rock song which is upbeat and happy.

The best songs on the album, or my favorites at least, are "Fotografia" a superb romantic pop duet with Nelly Furtado. It's just wonderful and slaps a smile on your face. Then you have his two anthems: "Mala Gente" a mischevious, rollicking, intense rocker regarding the fate of someone on their way to Hell. The second anthem, and what I think is one of Juanes' best songs, "A Dios Le Pido" a latin rocker which is intense, introspective, and a petition to God to listen to the plight of mankind and the singer's own heart. It starts with an explosion of drums and electric guitar and descends into a throbbing beat and Juanes' evocative almost chantlike belting. It's the musical equivalent to caffeine and deeply profound.

Although Spanish is incredibly musical language without translation, with translation you'll find Juanes writes remarkably poetic lyrics. Additionally, his messages are highly socially conscious. As an artist he uses his position to make a difference in the world and this is apparent in most of his songs. He speaks against violence and injustice. The throbbing driving ballad "La Historia De Juan" (another favorite of mine) is literally the story of a young man from the streets who is forgotten, but could have offered the world so much. Not only is it heartbreaking, but the rhythm and style of the song is peculiar and experimental. This is what makes Juanes one of the great musicians working today, he writes about things we don't often think about and uses an intense and immense world of musical styles as his tools, but always leaving his brand on it. His creativity, verstility -- and pathos -- set him apart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bajofondo magic.......2007-08-04

This CD has very good songs - in fact, they're so good and haunting, the band wasn't able to produce better ones on their second CD. Some of the songs are danceable gems, I've seen performances on Forma and Bruma. In brief, it's a must have for electrotango fans.

3 out of 5 stars 2-3 good pieces..........2007-04-18

The CD is not as great as others mention, at least not for me. I like 2-3 of the pieces but that's it.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful CD!!.......2006-08-08

this is a great CD -- i would rate it 4.5 stars. i was expecting more upbeat songs like track #2, but it is a great CD to lounge with.

the beats are awesome, and very well put together tracks.

4 out of 5 stars This is chill out, not tango.......2006-08-03

If you are looking for traditional tango, or you expect some kind of modern tango like Piazzola, don't buy this CD. This CD is electronic and interesting music, and i enjoy it a lot. I Strongly recommend this CD for people who likes electronic neither dancing nor meditation music. Moreover, i recommend to start with "La Revancha del Tango" from Gotan Project to listen how chill out tango sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Lounge music.......2006-06-06

Trip hop and lounge lovers need to have this CD at home. Bajo Fondo Tango Club is not as pure tango as Piazzola's nor as chill out percolated as Gotan Project's, which makes them a band for all publics. Nor even one single person in my office couldn't help download at least one song of this CD into their ipods. Three of them already bought their copy.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-06-08

I rate 5 star for the music, 5 star for sound quality and 4 star for surround mix. I'm not disappoint when listen to this album, each track on this album is very well selected.

I enjoy even when I listen with red book player. The CD layer also very good when compare to SACD layer.

One of my favorite album.

5 out of 5 stars very good sound.......2007-01-03

I am very pleasure when I heard this SACD, all the sound is clear and the multichannel works like a different instruments places around my room.

4 out of 5 stars voices in the room .......2006-03-14

Nice jazz sampler should appeal to most tastes in mainstream jazz since it's not too funky or free-style. What's the real kicker here is the SACD quality. Certainly not what I would call a great test cd but still good for amazing friends with the detailed sonics and tight bass lines and realistic voices in the room effects.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2006-01-02

very good compilation.
sound quality on SACD is first rate.

4 out of 5 stars Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06

I'm not a jazz fan, but purchased this SACD for testing the performance of my new SACD & DVDA player. I own a lot of DVD audio discs, but this one is my first SACD.
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

5 out of 5 stars My first David Bisbal CD.......2006-11-12

I bought this while in Mexico. I liked his songs from his previous CD, so I wanted to get his new one. It was a leap of faith to buy it since I didn't get to listen to his music. But I was not disappointed! I love it, it is great. It gets me to dance even while I'm driving!! My favorite tracks are 1, 3, and 4 (Torre de Babel is my favorite!!). I like the flamenco/middle eastern sound to the song. It's great. Highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Tiguere el David Bisbal!!.......2006-10-23

Vamos a mantener este review corto. Este album ta clasico.
Asi de sencillo.

Tiguere!!

2 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2006-10-20

I think David Bisbal should stick with his roots, the flamenco/pop he does like no other. This album is more rock, typical music of today, nothing like the different sounds that his two first albums brought. I don't find the same enthusiastic David as in previous songs. His ballads are boring, and the rest of the album is dull and very predictable. I love this singer, but I think he should stick to the best tallent he has, and that is to bring his roots to the forefront and keep the rock music to the rockers. I don't care for rock, perhaps that's why I don't like this album, but I truly don't think it's going to catch on like the other two he did. "Torre de Babel" is great though, it's David Bisbal singing and doing what he does best, flamenco/pop, original and different. I was anticipating this album, now I'm just sorry I bought it....good thing it was on sale, that should say something about it, it's not selling well if only after 2 weeks of being out, it's already being discounted. I hope his next is flamenco/pop otherwise, he'll lose this fan.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what he's singing about but he IS singing @}->---.......2006-08-05

As a long time fan of Marc Anthony, I have all of his cds. I love his voice because while it's powerful, it's also smooth and heavenly. I love all of his work, but there is something about him singing in spanish. It's obviously so natural to him and he's at his best then. Not that I know what he's singing about, but the songs are so stunning and beautiful - it almost doesn't matter.
On here, the two standout songs are Te Conozco Bien and a beautiful ballad Hasta Ayer. I love to listen to this often because it's soothing after a long day. While I do wish he'd release more english speaking albums, again, I think he's at his best singing spanish. Pick this up if you are a salsa or a Marc Anthony fan. It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album by Marc Anthony.......2005-10-27

I originally purchased this tape over eight years ago. I had a super long commute and it never left my car. Now that I no longer have a commute, or a tape deck in my truck for that matter, I decided to purchase the CD for in home use. And USE it I do. There are not a lot of songs on the CD but as the old saying goes its quality not quantity that counts. I own other Marc Anthony CD's but this is, by far, the best.
Buy it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Todo esta tan rico!.......2004-12-07

I truly don't know how ANY Marc Anthony CD can go unnoticed---particularly the Spanish language albums. This man is truly one of the greatest salseros of today. He mixes his own funky, fresh flavor with traditional salsa coros and beautiful orchestration (due in no small part to Sergio George, one of the greatest Latin music producers today).

This album starts off on a high and energetic note with "Se Me Sigue Olvidando." I love the piano intro! It only gets better from there. Some of his most well-loved salsa tunes are front and center on this CD. They include "Te Conozco Bien," "Nadie Como Ella," and "Te Amare." There is also an achingly beautiful ballad in "Hasta Ayer." If anything, Marc needs to record more romantic ballads. I can guarantee you, that if he doesn't break your heart with his devestatingly beautiful vocals, the guitar riffs will melt even the iciest heart. Many of these songs are also featured on "Desde El Principio," a retrospective of Marc's great salsa career.

5 out of 5 stars The best Marc Anthony album ever!.......2004-08-20

This is my very favorite Marc Anthony album. "Se Me Sigue Olvidando", "Te Amaré", and "Nadie Como Ella", are my three favorite songs on this album. None of his other albums could ever compare to this one.

5 out of 5 stars All The Hits.......2007-06-02

A continuation from Vol I of the all-time greats. Every song is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars A Smoker!!!.......2007-05-12

The companion cd to volume 1 and every bit as good. This release has the top cream of old school salsa in it. Not one bad track in the lot. Of all the salsa compilations I have come across, this and vol. 1 are as good as it gets. Wheter you are a hard core Latino or are just a lover of great music, I highly recommend this. You just can't go wrong here. Bon appetit.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Great Salsa.......2007-01-12

Although the title may seem a bit smug, this truly is great salsa from all over Latin America and the Caribbean. This is an ideal collection not only for a genuine salsaholic but also someone who is looking for an overview of the genre. There is not a single lame groove on this disc, and some of my favorites are songs I had never even heard when I bought it. Some of these songs also have things to say, like the heartbreaking story of "El Gran Varon" (The Great Male) and the scathing social commentary of "Plastico." For real old-school salsa, check out "Las Caras Lindas" (Beautiful Faces) or The Queen of Salsa herself, Celia Cruz, on "Quimbara." Another great tune is "A la Hora que Me Llamen Voy" (At the moment they call me, I go) by Jose Alberto "El Canario": It starts with a crowd scene like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," then the intoxicating chorus begins, the beat kicks in, and El Canario starts singing in a voice so sensual that it could melt iron. This is the rare CD on which you will find yourself listening to every song and not skipping over a single one!

While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. On their debut, A lo Cubano, the song "537 C.U.B.A." (their remake of Compay Segundo's "Chan Chan") gives new meaning to the term "old school." And the sound of sacred Santeria beats and traditional son weaving through sharp-edged lyrical attacks with groove-heavy bass and drum tracks on tunes like "Represent," "Atención," and "Atrevido" make for a cool joyride through the back streets of Havana. --Jesse "Chuy" Varela

I love that CD. I only new a couple songs from that band but the whole CD is good.

5 out of 5 stars The Good and The Bad.......2007-02-28

Yea baby, when the Cubans are out all others should go to school to catch up or just go home. This cats should embarrass all those Puerto Rican "artists" with their STUPID reggaeton trash, with their over repeated monotonous beats and over promoted junk, just hype(let's be fair and exclude Tego & Voltio). If Cuba were not under a communist tyranny that even controls the music that can be done, so it does not sound too "imperialist" (ask Arturo Sandoval) Cuba would rule in this genre the same way they did musically back in their capitalistic days. This Orisha guys (who got out of Cuba) are more than proof of the talent that is wasted just like everything else in Cuba right now.

It is mostly a fusion of Cuban flow and rap that reminds me of the mentality in some of the fusions of Dr. Dre with 70's American funk & r&b. However, as great as the music is, lyrically this guys are pretty ambiguous, non-understandable, meaningless, and dull. Lyrically they are pu$$ies, simple. There is a lot that should be said and they don't say, to be allowed back in Cuba to shoot their videos and use it as their back ground, the $$ are there for a reason. They are not representing or speaking for anyone, they got out and forgot the abusive slavish regime that bounds Cubans? Maybe it is the producers, I don't know. But I do know that in a genre as unrestricted as rap this is called being a PU$$Y.

5 out of 5 stars Lo Mejor de lo Mejor!.......2006-03-31

When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CD.......2006-03-04

THIS IS MY 1ST REVIEW OF ANYTHING EVER AND I'M TELLING YOU THIS CD IS EXCELLENT AND IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. I LIKE THE WAY THEY FUSED TOGETHER THEIR CUBAN STYLE ALONG WITH HIP HOP BEATS AND I MUST SAY IT IS A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CDS YOU JUST PUT IN YOUR CD PLAYER AND LET IT RUN FROM BEGINING TO END. A MASTERPIECE AND A MUST HAVE FOR ANY MUSIC FAN.

The Benny Moré of our generation. They demonstrate that Cuba is at the musical forefront producing the best that is hard to come close to.
