During the early '90s, the Chieftains embarked upon a series of multigenre crossover recordings. Major pop stars were brought in as guest artists and a few had the goods, but others came across as wannabes or well-meaning if clueless PR victims. This Grammy-winning live album from 1992 features the Who's Roger Daltrey and American singer Nanci Griffith. Sadly, Griffith's husky, thin-textured voice is inadequate to the demands of Irish vocal ornamentation and phrasing. Daltrey, meanwhile, sounds raucous, unidiomatic, and amateurish; plus his presence with a traditional Irish music ensemble in the middle of British-occupied Belfast seems a bit much. In any case, courting comparison with the Chieftains' own singer, Kevin Conneff, is a risky business at best. The instrumentals are typically accomplished and future
Riverdance diva Jean Butler provides charmingly percussive footwork, but the trap drummer on the last tune is glaringly out of place.

Why'd you bring Roger?.......2005-09-24
In later albums, the Chieftains have been trying to go the Santana route by adding 'guest vocalists', and too often, the effects are jarring.
Case in point, Mr. Roger Daltrey; his rendering of "Raglan Road" (an overdone song in any event) is abysmal. If I were in attendance, I would have gone for a hot dog at that point. They follow up with a rendition of "Behind Blue Eyes" that might have worked as an instrumental, but it also falls flat.
That being said, the rest of the album isn't too bad; the band is in fine form, and the song selection is a good mishmash of the well-known and the obscure. The recording also sounds great, as "An Irish Evening" was one of the first digital CD recordings of the early 90s.
A fine "Evening," but maybe Roger could have stayed home.......2005-01-21
Representative of the fine mix of traditional Irish music the Chieftains perform, this concert gives the fan of the Chieftains a nice sampling of what they're good at with the occasional error in judgement that accompanies a live performance.
Highlights include a fine opening medley that gives the band a chance to show how well they play together , Matt Malloy's outstanding flute solo on "The Mason's Apron," that still stuns me every time I listen to it, and a closing medley that allows each member to shine.
But the guest stars don't really work for me, Nanci Griffith doesn't do a bad job but adds nothing special to the concert and Roger Daltrey sounds out of his element on "Raglan Road," and while "Behind Blue Eyes" is interesting as worked through the Chieftains sound it just doesn't fit here. I am sure "The Stone" (A special Dance when two lovers meet) is fine when you can see it, it loses a bit on CD. But these are not major problems and the sound is solid for a concert performance. For this fan, it's a pretty good time.
Excellent Chieftains, but with some not-so-good extras........2004-10-15
This CD is a recording of the Chieftains playing live in Belfast. As a result, there is some distracting background noise and in my opinion the clapping and cheering detracts from the overall effect of the CD.
This aside, the CD contains an excellent compilation of vocal ballads and lovely instrumentals. Kevin Conneff does a lovely a cappella rendering of "North Americay." Other standouts include the rollicking "Lilly Bolero/The White Cockade," and the mournful "The Stone."
Nanci Griffiths and Roger Daltrey appear as guests of the Chieftains in several of the tunes on the CD. I enjoyed Nanci Griffiths "Little Love Affairs," and "Red is the Rose." However, I cannot say the same for Roger Daltrey. I skip over his "Raglan Road" and "Behind Blue Eyes," every time I play the CD. I feel that his songs don't fit into the style of the CD, and frankly, I dislike his voice.
Overall, I listen to this CD for its lovely Chieftains pieces, and try to block out its failings.
If I Could Give This Six Stars I Would.......2002-10-05
I don't know what the reviewer's problem is, but nobody in the Opera House this night was thinking about the British occupation, they were all too busy enjoying one of the best Chieftains live shows ever! Only Paddy and the Boys can meld rock, pop, country-folk, the dance and traditional Celtic music into one fantastic show like this. Daltrey's pub drinking style is PERFECT for the band, and the version of "Raglan Road" contained here is one of the best ever recorded. Nanci Griffith sounds like she could've been born in County Mayo. I would urge anyone to get a copy of this immediately, there's none better! A topnotch addition to any longtime fan's Cheiftains' CD collection or a good starter for those of you just beginning to get a taste for this worldclass Irish band's music. Long before Riverdance there was the CHIEFTAINS!

Customer Reviews:
The "new" John Doyle.......2001-06-18
Those accustomed to the rhythm-driven accompaniment style of one of the world's preeminent Irish guitarists will find surprises a-plenty in John Doyle's first solo offering. To be sure, Doyle provides his familiar but always stirring back-up duties on several tracks, including a dynamic turn with his fiddler-equal Liz Carroll, but what is most striking is Doyle's vocal ability, one too long set aside during his years with Solas. Doyle's voice is simple and controlled, but he possesses an innate ability to create drama and pathos without oversinging or seeming contrived. There are some memorable songs presented here, including "Crooked Jack," a denouncement of Irish workers in England during the 19th century (set to the same tune as "Star of the County Down"); "My Parents Reared Me Tenderly," about a Northern Irish lad who enlists in the Queen's army; and one each featuring Karan Casey and Doyle's own father Sean. Aside from the addition of Balladeer on John Doyle's resume, he also gives an impressive recorded debut as composer of several traditional tunes, on which he overdubs the melodies as well as accompaniment. The deftness and fluidity with which Doyle spins these melodies will perhaps be most surprising to listeners. We've all been enthralled with Doyle's accompaniment style for years, a trade he currently plies with the Eileen Ivers band. But with "Evening Comes Early," John Doyle has firmly established himself as a major triple threat in the world of Irish music.

Customer Reviews:
Very nice.......2007-01-14
The other reviewers have covered it all. I want to add that it is hard to find a good recording of A Mighty Fortress (it is on track 1), so I really value this one.
This CD does not contain the usual classical organ pieces, which is nice since most people already have plenty of other CDs contianing that material.
Be aware that after the loudness of track 1, the rest of the tracks are mostly quiet and reflective. Just a note in case you were expecting something more loud.
A great program from the world's best romantic organ.......2003-01-05
The enormous Aeolian-Skinner organ in New York's Riveside Church was built over two decades under the direction of Virgil Fox who plays on this recording. Although it's not the largest organ in the world, or even in New York, it is the definitive American Symphonic Organ. There are dozens of different divisions surrounding the church sanctuary (not just one big box at one end of the church) and there are tens of thousands of pipes. Many stops beautifully imitate orchestral instruments. The organ is renown for its extensive "celeste" stops--stops where two ranks of pipes, one slightly out of tune, play together to provide a shimmering ethereal quality.
The organ's resources are so vast that many performers have difficulty in controling the sound. They play either whisper soft or deafeningly loud. But Fox was perfectly in control, and you'll hear the full range of the organ building to exciting climaxes and then gently pulling back.
There's an interesting story about the (analog) recording process. Since the pipes were closely miked, whenever Fox changed stops, the tape would pick up an ungodly crash of the pneumatic stop mechanism. During recordings, at each change, Fox would pause for 5 or 6 beats, and the stop change would later be cut out of the tape. This led to some interesting glitches in the rhythm of the finished pieces, but those of us who've loved this program for 20 years since it first came out on LP wouldn't have it any other way.
The program is interesting, with many relaxing familiar tunes. If you own one CD of this fabulous organ, this should be the one.
What Can I Say - Excellent Organ Music!.......2002-12-14
I first heard this collection in 1968 when I bought it on 8-track cartridge. Not one boring piece on it! The music on this CD and the organ used to make the recording, plus V. Fox himself are combined to make this CD indispensible to those who really like "classical" organ music. As far as I'm concerned, if you're in the market for only one classical organ CD, do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy and play this one 'cause you'll only wind up buying the rest of the Fox collection.
This collection is definitely the flagship in terms of piece selection, interpretation, and musicianship. Second only to the organ in the Atlantic City Convention Center, the Riverside Church Aeolian-Skinner as heard on this CD is guaranteed to pull out every emotion every single time you play it.
Includes the rare and beautiful Dvorak "Songs My Mother Taught Me", played with the full dynamic and tonal range by argueably the best organist to date (whatever happened to E. Power Biggs?)!
The Art Of Virgil Fox.......2000-05-29
In classical circles, Virgil Fox has been the leading name for classical organ in the last several decades. He has done more to popularise classical organ than any other performer. The Art of Virgil Fox is only one example, but an excelent one. The clarity of the recording itself is unsurpassed. The organ is extremly hard to record and still have the depth of the insturment itself, as well as the artistry of the performer. It usually sounds like a big loud thing. However, between the recording technique and the artist himself, it is excelent. One gets a feeling of emence space and tends to drift with the music. Which is the most anyone can hope for. I had the privalage to meet Virgil Fox sometime before his death, and it was to date one of the most memorable times of my life. He was a great artist and human being. This recording only scratches the surface of his talent. It is definatly a must have item. After listening to this album, all preconcieved notions of "classical music" will blow out the window. I strongly recommend it.
You need this one!.......1999-12-29
This CD is comprised of transcriptions for organ. Ole Virgy explores the vast tonal resources of the wonderful Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ in the Riverside Church. From the bombastic chords of "A Mighty Fortress" to the lush sounds of Liszt's Liebestraume No. 3, you will find yourself immersed in beautiful auditory impressions. No one knows transcriptions like Ole Virgy. This would make a nice addition to the Virgil Fox collection, but only after you have bought his Encores CD.

Excellent program selection, but overblown performances.......2006-03-27
This was a disapointment. After reading the list of songs included, I looked forward to hearing this CD. The instrumentalists are wonderful in interpretation and presentation, but the vocalists, though technically very good, seem overblown for these songs. Their performances border on the operatic, with just not the right amount of nuance for the repertoire. The soprano fares better than the male voices, but when there is a duet, they never seem to truly blend, but just compete with one another. I remember the great period recordings of Joan Morris and William Bolcolm, some of which are still available on CD(including a relatively new one- see Amazon for title and details), and this CD, though well-intentioned, never approaches that level of sophistication and purity of performance.

It contains songs not on other CD........2007-01-01
I am pretty happy with the CD I have. I noticed that these songs are not on other CD. Summer Time in Venice, Three Coins in the Fountain, The Impossible Dream, Send in The Clown, Somewhere My Love and Elizabethan Serenade. The sound quality is acceptable.
The Best Of The Mantovani Orchestra.......2004-04-13
This cd is an ok collection of tunes from Mantovani. It's not the best but it's ok.This 2 cd set features songs such as three coins in a fountain, send in the clowns, skater's waltz, for once in my life and others. This isn't the only version of for once in my life Mantovani did. This version is light strings.Manti's other version is with a harpsicord and heavy strings. It is on Mantovani Scene/Mantovani Sound which has just come out from Vocolion. It also has such songs as dear heart, both sides now, honey and a lot of others.Amazon doesn't have this yet but I have just recieved my copy from another website.Like the other viewer said unfortuanly the sound quality is bad on the best of collection.I even heard somebody coughing on one track and there is some tape hiss from the transfer.I would like to recommend a 2 cd set by John Fox going under the name of the starry night orchestra that is put out by yestermusic(good music group)and has 30 tracks by Mr.Fox.Every song has a heavy string contingment and it states that these were played on beautiful music stations.John Foxes Strings are so beautiful.
The John Fox I'm talking about isn't the same John Fox that is a commedian that is sold on this site.
The Best of the Mantovani Orchestra (vol 1 & 2).......2002-09-14
The Madacy Label has betrayed Mantovani's genious, and substituted poor recordings in these 2 CD's. I have immediately
cancelled all Madacy Label orders with everyone, and will investigate all future items with a Canadian origin prior to purchase.
Joseph C. Jernigan
Poor Recording.......2002-09-05
The quality of the recording is poor. You can hear flutter in the string passages, which is 90% of Mantovani's music! There is also hiss noise, and pops in piece transitions... Amateur transcription from tape to CD's, is my guess. Someone else made bad reviews regarding the poor recording on the same record label, so my suggestion is to stay away from the label Madacy Records.
Top of the "Beautiful Music" Heap.......2001-02-19
This CD has a nice collection of Mantovani's work. The combination of older standards with "newer" (such as Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life")is great. This is the stuff that is usually mocked as "elevator music" but also considered by many good romancing background music. Many of these arrangements were heard on a local Beautiful Music FM station where I live before the format change. The only negative I have is for a "box set" there is no write-up on the Orchestra. It would have been nice to read about Mantovani and what inspired his arrangements, and the orchestra personnell. My copy was made in Canada by Madacy. Maybe someone who has contact with that company could recommend a booklet for any future copies made.

Excellent.......2006-06-25
These are old recordings, so quality isn't perfect, but these are beautiful songs, beautifully sung. Considering you get two discs, it's a bargain.
not enough bang for the buck.......2006-04-28
It seems a crime that, in order to get John McCormack singing "I'm Falling in Love with Some One," you have to shell out big bucks for this CD. I can't abide opera, and there are too many arias here sung in foreign languages to justify a capital investment. McCormack also does a striking rendition of "Because," which is missing from this CD. maybe we'll get lucky and Archeophone will put together a few disks, all in English, and I'd pay their price, steep though it usually is.

Album Description
Irish Traditional music from an outstanding singer, gifted flute player, lilter, and music composer, Colm O'Donnell, from Aclare, Co. Sligo. Slow airs, reels and traditional ballads accompanied on selected tracks by guitar, keyboards and bodhran.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant, just brilliant........2007-02-23
This is probably one of the best "sleeper" CDs in my rapidly expanding Irish music collection. Superior flute and whistle playing, and his singing ... oooh. Lovely, unadorned style -- even a bit of lilting! -- that's anything but "Fauxrish." It's got a bit of leavening wit as well; the "Bodhran Song" is a hoot.
Indeed, this is the pure schtuff, genuinely and painstakingly presented, and I love it so.
Unsung Master of the Traditional.......2006-04-01
Wonderful, just wonderful music! This is the music of traditional Ireland as it was, and probably still is, in the small towns and farms where life has managed to stay relatively the same (despite the Celtic Tiger & E.U. infuences). Colm is in fact a small town farmer, working land his family has farmed for generations. His songs are heartfelt in the truest sense, especially when he sings sean-nos.
It's amazing, and incredibly sad, that someone so talented, a frequent All Ireland Championship winner for flute and singing, could be so unknown. This album isn't new (1999) but I just happened upon it, and am so glad I bought it. I listen to it at work, home, in the car, and don't ever tire of it. His voice, so touching and true, makes me take pause, no matter what I'm doing.
Raw, Powerful, and moving........2003-11-06
I originally bought this CD after sampling it from here on amazon, but was still more so amazed after listening to it. My appreciation for Colm's flute and whistle playing skills only grow with each listening venture. Many modern, yet great Irish flute players tend to overwhelm you with technical nuances, drowning you in their own virtuosity, and loosing much of the essence of the music. Colm on the other hand, seems to concentrate more on volume, rhythm, and voicing of his flute, to create a powerful, driving, yet lifting sound fitting both to the ear and feet. Colm does ornament, but in a seemingly more sporadic, effortless way adding a dimension to the music that is not achieved by many. Although I may be biased towards Sligo style flute playing, I am sure that others would have to agree that Colm's play is simply masterful in both technique and artistry. Lastly, though I am not as big a fan of singing as I am of flute/whistle playing, Colm does have an amazing voice. It is only unfortunate that you cannot hear more of the track listings here at amazon before purchase since I think that the songs that are offered do not accurately portray the majority of his singing on this CD. I sincerely hope my review may serve to help illuminate rather than obfuscate, and possibly implore you to purchase this CD; I think you will not regret doing so.
Farewell to Evening Dances-A most awesome CD by C. O'Donnell.......2003-10-03
This CD deserves much more than just 5 stars! It's a refreshing CD that really gets to your heart, and makes me want to pick up my flute and go to town. Here you will find really beautiful airs that has the power to make you get misty eyed, and some great reels and jigs to want to learn to add to your repetoire if you've never heard them, as you see-there are many Ive never seen before and I have a Irish Traditional Cd collection of over 50 currently! Buy this, you wont be dissapointed. I wont be surprised if some of his work shows up as part of the soundtrack for the next good Irish movie that comes along.
Might be my favorite Irish traditional CD!.......2003-01-04
It's one of the most enjoyable CD's I've heard, because it's full of very musical fluting and some wonderful un-forced singing (oh, quite a bit of whistling, too). There is a HILARIOUS song about a goat that wants to grow up to be a bodhran...I laughed out loud the first few times I heard it. The air he plays on track 7 makes me cry, it's so beautiful. And I love how he doesn't rush the fast tunes. Simply beautiful piece of work.
In recommending the CD to me, my friend wrote, "Colm's CD is absolutely fantastic....Colm's playing (to my ear) is some of the most "musical" of the "non-geezers", by that I mean when you listen to his CD "Farewell to evening dances" you get the distinct sense that he's not trying to bludgeon you with virtuosity, rather he's simply playing for the music, passing on his love of it."
I have listened to this CD about 40 times this week and I am thoroughly impressed with its musicality.
