This album is a delightful Pandora's box of improbable instrumental, cultural and genre collaborations that just may destroy any remnant inclination you have to isolate world music from the West. Randy Crafton is well known for bridging cultural boundaries through his ongoing exploration of the frame drum, but for this album, he went into some kind of warp drive. Featured here are one of a kind collaborations with harmonica wizard Howard Levy, composer and multi instrumentalist David Amram, flute and wind masters Steve Gorn and Jorge Alfano, preeminent Hindustani vocalist and sitarist Amit Chaterjee, and clarinet and sax player Amy Platt. Duologue is a primal, otherworldly, spiritual journey into the heart of ancient music and modern instrumentation that must reside among any world music collection. And hey, the 3-D full motion CD package is neato too!

The 14 resulting, unrehearsed "duologues" between Randy and his guests range from Delta blues and African rhythms to Hindu chants and a trans-generational rap. Often recorded in one take, the sounds are fresh, and the mood always spontaneous.

bittersweet, truly great jazz.......1998-08-10

There's a lot of snooty buzz about Lee Wiley. And it's all justified. Grab this CD while you can because Wiley's work is getting harder and harder to find, like Hoagy Carmichael's. Anyway, Wiley has a sensual yet slightly weak voice that brings out the bittersweetness of most of these songs. Truly excellent.
