Maken & Clancy Collection.......2006-11-04
Great Music.......2005-09-22
These numbers are not just a lot of slick productions ... with their impersonal lyrics and assembly-line melodies. They are (to me) music at its most down-to-earth and its most enjoyable.
"A Place in the Choir" starts things off, and we're led to believe that ... what is to follow will be a standard, harmless series of Irish ballads ... but, the very next song ... "The Cobbler" let's us in on the truth ... and we are taken into the heart of the Makem/Clancy appeal ... the deeply held opinions and feelings of men who care about people.
"The Dutchman" is a beautiful and touching ballad about a simple man and his loving wife. "Willie McBride" is an anti-war statement ... and an effective one. "Morning Glory" is a rousing song with a funny twist. "Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" is a nice song about a traveller. "Gentle Annie" is a heart-felt tribute to, well, Annie. "Rambles of Spring" is an appropriately fun and rollicking song to end the CD (tape) with ... but the gem of the collection is "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". It sort-of has to catch a hold of you (before you will think it's special), but once it does, you are very much taken by the story and they effective way it is sung.
Some of these songs were recorded live ... the CD is a nice mixture of live and studio recorded music ... and the audience clearly has a deep affection for these boys ... as is easy to understand.
But this CD would make a nice gift ... here is some real music ... as perhaps music was intended to be played.

Sajex & Philbin Collection.......2001-08-18
This is funny? Sajex & Philbin Collection is silly. Pat Sajex is Tommy Makem and Regis Philbin is Liam Clancy and that is funny if Tommy Makem was Pat Sajex on Wheel of Fortune and Liam Clancy was Regis Philbin on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. That's silly.
The songs I like is The Dutchman, The Garden Song, Willie McBride & Ballad of St. Ann's reel my favorite songs.
This is a cool CD of Makem & Clancy Collection.

Excellent Beginner's Guide + Live Celebration.......2006-08-10
The only obvious omission that I can see is their first single, Dark Streets Of London; however as this is on Red Roses For Me, which you will doubtless be acquiring shortly after playing disc one, this is not a great problem. It would have been an idea, though, to have included the original single as this differed from the album version and is hard to find.
A few notes about which versions have been used where more than one exists: Rainy Night In Soho is the remix that first appeared on the CD release of the Poguetry In Motion EP (the original vinyl mix seems to be unavailable on CD). The Irish Rover, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and A Pair Of Brown Eyes are all the remixed single edits; The Boys From The County Hell is the cleaned-up single version. Only Rainy Night In Soho is duplicated on the expanded editions of the parent albums.

A wonderful gift, this handsomely packaged four-CD box set (purple velvet cover, gold-foil lettering) also serves as an inviting midcareer retrospective of an uncommon vocalist-sonic architect. Only Time: The Collection is a mix-and-match assortment of tracks spanning Enya's first five U.S. releases (including her 1987 debut, The Celts) and embellished with a half-dozen B-sides not found on her previous U.S.-released albums. Chief among them are "May It Be" (from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack); "Isobella," a hushed, slowly evolving beauty formerly available only in Japan; and "Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)." The set's fourth disc is an enhanced CD that includes 1996 video footage of Enya performing "Oiche Chiun" during a BBC special. Also included is a 44-page, tall-format booklet filled with regal artist photos, song lyrics, and commentary on each track written by lyricist Roma Ryan. Some notations are throwaway items. Others are insightful, such as the unfinished lyrics (about lost love) for the instrumental title track to A Day Without Rain. The order is a jumble, usually mixing tracks from two recordings onto one disc. The stylistic difference between her dated 1987 debut and the sophistication of 1988's Watermark makes for some occasionally jarring listening on disc one. On the other hand, the opening sequence on disc three ("After Ventus," "No Holly for Miss Quinn," "The Memory of Trees") is mesmerizing. Overall, nicely done. --Terry WoodAlbum Description
This Collection is the first career spanning collection of Enya's work, gracing 4CDs with 51 tracks. Also includes tracks not previously available on any domestic release such as 'Isobella,' 'Book Of Days' (Original Single Version) and 'May It Be' (Single Version). 48 page booklet features liner notes by lyricist Roma Ryan, a discography and archival photos. The 4th disc is enhanced with the previously unreleased performance of 'Silent Night'. The discs are housed in a purple-velvet covered digibook with 40 + page booklet. Reprise. 2002.Customer Reviews:

Things get started with Tim Story's lovely piano rendition of the "Sanctus" from Faure's Requiem. The quiet and reflective tone of that piece carries throughout the CD. Other highlights include Paul McCandless's moving "Lord's Prayer" version and Steve Erquiaga's "Ave Maria." "Prayer" is a perfect disc for background listening if you're engaged in some activity that needs harmonious yet unobtrusive accompaniment.

A "Collection" Of Great Songs.......2005-10-22
Will Millar and the late Jimmy Ferguson are no longer part of the lineup, but the new version continues the great tradition of wonderful music. "The Last Of The Irish Rovers" opens the album in rollicking fashion, followed by the best track on the cd, "Star Of The County Down". Joe Millar's signature baritone is found on "My Boy Willie" and "Lovely Isle Of Innisfree". The underrated Wilcil McDowell shines all over, especially on "The Jigs".
"Gypsy Rover", "Muirsheen Durkin (Nancy Whiskey)" continue on, closing up with their trademark "Wasn't That A Party". The Rovers still can sing an irish song better than anyone and their instrumentation surprisingly is almost better than older records. The production on this record is quite good, having some songs almost being overdone. Any fan of the Rovers must pick this up, and if you like irish music and haven't heard of them, do yourself a favor and get acquainted.

Re-recordings of Irish Rovers' classics.......2002-11-25
Most American listeners will know the Rovers only from their 1968 hit single of Shel Silverstein's "The Unicorn," or their early '80s recording of Tom Paxton's "Wasn't That a Party?" But their back catalog is filled with Irish ballads, drinking songs and family stories, accompanied by classic Irish guitar, whistle, accordion and multi-part singing. The Rovers typically avoided political statement (being a mixed band of Protestants and Catholics), though songs like "Orange and Green" do comment obliquely on The Troubles.
This newly recorded release finds the Rovers still in strong voice, and as joyous as ever. Only Will Millar is missing from the original lineup (he left the group in 1995), and new members, John Reynolds, Wallace Hood and Sean O'Driscoll all make strong contributions. These tracks appear to have been recorded in the mid-90s (the liner notes to do not say, but with Millar's absence and Jim Ferguson's presence, and noting that Ferguson passed away in 1997, 1996 seems likely), and revisit many of the Rovers' best-loved songs.

Beautiful, Haunting, Lush.......2006-03-11
Awesome!.......2005-12-11
This c.d. is all about romance, but not the gushy, typical romance. Most of the songs on here are about missing the one you love. The singing is really good, but the music is also interesting with intricate guitar work from Mr. Blackmore.
It is the perfect music for me to write my books to. I especially love "Ghost of a Rose." This song has an ethereal melody, and words about longing and separation that have inspired a short story inside of me. If you like Loreena McKennitt, Enya or Celtic music, you might like this.
Amazing! Music doesn't get any better than this..........2005-10-13
Finally I decided to check one out. I chose "Beyond The Sunset" and I dare say that it is the best purchase I have made at any time in my life. The music is hauntingly beautiful. Once hearing it you will never forget it..and it will leave you wanting to hear more.
Hitting the Mother Lode on First Try!.......2005-09-30
I've been lucky in my life. I was not around when Chuck Berry invented rock and roll, nor was I around when Elvis started up, but I was around when The Beatles recreated music (several times), when Deep Purple created hard rock (Don't call it Metal), and now I get to hear this wonderful mixture of Renaissance oriented blend of everything. Like I said in the title above, I hit gold on my first time out to listening to something totally different than I was used to hearing.
In closing, if you would have liked to watch Picasso paint a masterpiece, then the only thing that I can think of that might be relatively close, is to watch Blackmore play the guitar.
Beyond description..........2005-09-25
I think that Candice Night's voice is one of the best I've heard in my entire life, some people compare her to an angel, but I think an angel isn't a match for her voice (and she is REALLY pretty too...).
Ritchie Blackmore really knows how to play a guitar well, I was quite impressed with most of the solos the songs have, they're quite good.
Overall, this CD should not miss in your collection, since it's perfect and you're getting a lot for what you're paying for.

Thanksgiving generally is a pleasant and likeable affair. Its features include a charming, gently propulsive take on the traditional piece "Allelujah" by Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne; a delicate rendering of "Amazing Grace" by John Doan on a 20-string harp guitar; and a church-ready version of "We Gather Together" by a trio of Paul McCandless (oboe), Philip Aaberg (piano), and Michael Manring (bass). A midalbum three-song stretch, though--from the heavy stringing (cello, violin, guitar) of William Coulter and Barry Phillips to R. Carlos Nakai's flute soliloquy to a saxophone meditation by Paul Winter--lingers overly long in a melancholy state. Later, a thoughtful harmonica outing by former Lovin' Spoonful member John Sebastian aims for Americana yet delivers more spaghetti Western. Still, the album ends with pieces by Will Ackerman and George Winston--and what could be more classic than that? --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:
One of the best-listen to this Year-Round and experience the Joy of Thankfulness..........2006-02-17
A Sentimental Reflection.......2005-11-06
"Thanksgiving" is a compilation of that reflection in music. It celebrates the gathering together of those whom we hold dear, the solemnity and courage of the human psyche, the spirituality of the human soul, and the season when everything must change.
The CD progresses through a series of reflections, from "We Gather Together," a traditional hymn that emphasizes the gathering of friends and family, to George Winston's "Thanksgiving," moving through all the emotions of the Thanksgiving season with feelings of humility, prayer, blessedness and thankfulness.
A mood piece throughout, "Thanksgiving" will help you take your own personal journey of introspection, inspiration, peace and spirituality.
WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.......2004-04-12
In its own small way, this CD reminds us what its all about. The selections generally are soft and soothing as well as gently uplifting. There is nary a vocal to be heard-a plus when you need to get away from all the chatter. The artists are from Windham Hill's diverse stable and no one dominates the proceedings.
No attempt is made to hide the reality of Thanksgiving being primarily of Christian origin as sometimes happens in these affairs. But at the same time no one would mistake this CD for a contemporary Christian recording. The viewpoint encompasses not only giving thanks but memory and returning home as well. Hence, many of the pieces are colored with a hint of sadness.
If you are looking for music to "cut the rug" with this is not it. But if you are looking for music which prompts reflection and joy, this one is the one to buy.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
