Roedelius & Friends
Snapshots/Sidesteps
PSYCHONAVIGATION cd

In a career that spans more than 40 switched-on years,Hans-Joachim Roedelius has taken the opportunity to make many friends, and Snapshots/Sidesteps,from Dublin label Psychonavigation, is a testimony to some of them.Marking ten years of collaborations and remixes made between 1995-2005,this album's ten unreleased tracks are drawn from projects with artists including Seiichi Suzuki,David Bickley and the Orb's Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann.

In the history of post-war electronica,Roedelius is one of the great linking figures, joining Fluxus to Eno and the post-Acid House era.If this is a big territory to fill, possibly the best angle on Roedelius is as a musician most interested in process, and this is certainly demonstrated by the vignettes - some sketchy ideas, others more fully formed - released here."Ad Honerem" (2003) with Suzuki falls into the former category; a sparse drum track with uncertain elements unfolding into the ether; so too "Claire Obscura" (2005) with Patrick Pulsinger and Werner Dafeldecker. This isn't to denigrate the tracks as on "Juste Milieu",a 1995 offering made with Fabio Capanni, these are moments of imaginative observation, often inspired by organic sounds such as water, birdsong and air currents. As one might expect on a track with The Orb,2002's "Elektrum" takes on a more dynamic format,as does "Fait Accompli", a 2002 track made with Cluster comrade Werner Moebius and littered with tiny explosive electro-beats and skittery piano. But it is 2003's "Hoc Vola" that carries the album.Made with Timothy O'Keefe, the track sets up an accoustic folk riff with some Aeolian atmospherics to reiterate what it is that Roedelius does best.Lovely .

Album Description

"Among the most prolific artists in contemporary music, Bill Laswell's imprint is on literally hundreds of albums...fusing the energy of punk with the bone-rattling rhythms of funk." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE

With over 20 years experience as a touring musician and composer and nearly 300 albums to his credit, producer and bassist Bill Laswell has collaborated with some of the most illustrious names in music across all genres and boundaries, including Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger, Laurie Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Yoko Ono, Iggy Pop, The Last Poets, Buddy Miles, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Afrika Bambaataa, Tony Williams, Peter Gabriel and countless others. Psychonavigation, constructed by Pete Namlook (composer/creator of the Fax+49 label) and Laswell (creator/producer of the groundbreaking Axiom label) is an exploration of ambient underground psych. Laswell and Namlook join forces to produce the soundtrack for a journey through a telepathic mind. Endless soundscapes from Laswell's dubby bass, filled with drones and morphing fields, combine with Namlook's spheres to make the listener feel at one with the universe.

4 out of 5 stars awesome composition.......2005-02-07

When I bought this cd, and I listened it for the first time, I thought What the hell??
But when you listen carefully everything makes sense, the guy is a genius.

Lately I'm into experimental music but this is the bomb.
If you like pete namlook then this is a mst have.
Bill laswell goes beyond experimental, and it takes many listenings to get into the music but if you are, It's awesome

5 out of 5 stars Subharmonic.......2003-04-24

Psychonavigation is atmospheric music at "just about its best". This is on the (now-defunct I believe) Subharmonic label, and uses alot of subharmonics. It is best listened to with a sub woofer for maximum effect. Most people into ambient/space music would consider this music/atmosphere on the dark side, but I enjoy atmospherics as much as more "musical" pieces. Laswell and Namlook are "must haves" for any ambient collector.

5 out of 5 stars Psychonavigation 2 - Namlook/Laswell.......2000-02-28

This is probably the deepest, darkest ambient I've heard. The album continues the theme from Psychonaviagtion 1 of 'psychic communication with deep space entities', but the opening track ('Under Heaven') lulls you into a false sense of security with its blissful, beatfree floatiness. Then we're into dark territory. The rest of the album has a incredible atmosphere - pensive, desolate, sometimes terrifying. Melodies are minimal - there's a lot of bassy fx whirling around, and track 3 ('The Fate of Energy') is the only track with beats, which suddenly kick in with Laswells weird bass. A staggering feat.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series so far.......1999-03-26

Terrific. Very different from the first one. There are 5 tracks ranging from sparkling synth trills (Track 1 - Under Heaven.) to wonderful drone, sample, and burbling bass (Track 3 - The Fate of Energy, and Track 4 - The Hell of The Same). The Cd closes with the Harry Partch/Tom Recchion feeling Infinum, a short piece but very interesting. Great stuff...

    2 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2004-06-10

Be carefull with this one. I have all the psychonavigations, and its all beat but most of it is sampleless just cool beat and only two of the songs except the last have no bass the two that do, the bass is very minimul not dub like, sounds like namlook doing it, until the last song which just features laswells bass that actually sounds like wobbles bass for 1:13 then ambient. I had to mix my own version which i put the bass from the last song in all the beated songs and put my own samples. I think that namlook does so many ambient records and beated ambient records that he thought it was about time to make a just mainelly beated record not much ambient samples. There are some movie samples in the beginning of some of the songs, I think that holy man has samples of vin desil from pitch black but ive never sceen that movie. The album has a cryogenic title for most of the songs, so maby thats where they were going with this one slumber. Try it if you will if you can get a copy of it, I looked everywhere so i downloaded it from itunes.com for $9.99, you can also get all the previous on emusic.com

5 out of 5 stars Daylight at last/Best of Series?.......2000-01-28

The first song on the fourth album in this series is joyous-don't get me wrong there are moments like this in the previous volumes, only not as overt. The other three volumes often have stretches of happiness/serenity involving sparkling synth noises/pads, but this is downright peppy. Track two starts off with some nice middle eastern precussion/arabic samples that shifts into a Synth, Oud, Violin played melody. Nice. Track 3 moves back into the world of the first track with a twist. About 6 minutes into it there is a sample of what sounds like the moment from "Moonraker" where 007 is almost pulped in the G-Force simulator, crossed with some samples from the original "Alien" movie(that great " the computer is turning on" chattering..luv it). Ends with another sci-fi sample, can't begin to place it though. Track mutates again by minute 8. The album finishes out with an extended monochromatic piece (reminds me a bit of the Laswell/Thaemlitz album "Web"), another change of pace. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Namlook.......1999-11-19

I'm a self-professed Namlook-head, and this may be my favorite album of his yet. It's not as purely "ambient" as some of his other works (i.e. it has a pulse, a strong one), but it is one of his most interesting. The first track, especially, is a constantly changing weave of multiple layers of sound, each changing and blending into new layers by turns. Complex and beautiful at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Another great excursion from FAX.......1999-06-10

Now in its fourth incarnation, the multi-talented duo of Pete Namlook (FAX label mastermind) and Bill Laswell offer up perhaps their best Psychonavigation chapter yet. "Arena" is an expansive chill-out...an example of what really good ambient-techno is all about. "Samira" explores traditional Turkish/Middle-Eastern music(in the same vein as Pete's excellent 'Sultan' project with Burcan Ocal). "ENTIB 2060" is the effective centerpiece: a slinky space journey chock full of Laswell's signature funk and hip hop beats. One of the best electronica releases of 1999, which, as an import, won't find its way to many ears here in America.

          Album Description

The album is inspired by the ambience in Venice lagoon. You could say it sounds like a night trip on a mysterious boat, or a flight over a land in the balance between waters and grounds, as a unique landscape running the risk to be jeopardized by the contemporary urban and industry development. The kind of sounds in the work are rich, pieces never static but almost narrative, varied in drone and textures; arpeggio loops rarely sustained by some glitchy rhythmic patterns, sweet naive and distant melody made by saxes or a brilliant piano; dense and not ever conciliating atmospheres, but sensitive in the forms and absolutely inclined to melancholy. Musicians: Enrico Coniglio: guitars, synthesizers, programming, loops Guido Marzorati: piano and keyboards Arve Hendriksen: trumpet Piero Bittolo Bon: bass clarinet Nicola Alesini: popular clarinet Massimo Liverani: air synth, loops Hans-Joachim Roedelius: piano.
