5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-31

When I was younger I had the casette recording of this album. I listened to it so many times I actually wore the tape so thin you could hear both sides (A and B) at the same time. I've been looking at second hand shops for this album ever since, I never imagined it was still being made. Every single song on this album is bound to become a family favorite. Just because songs are safe for kids to listen to doesn't mean they have no use for adults. There are some beautiful love songs on this album. Stereotypical children's songs get old fast. How many times can you listen to twinkle twinkle little star and the alphabet song before going crazy because they're the same tune? These songs will give a much needed burst of color into your child's music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Suberb Kids' Album.......2007-03-20

This is definitely one you can listen to in the car. It's on the second generation, as I just bought it for my granddaughter. Her mama (my daughter) was so excited because she grew up on it, too!

5 out of 5 stars In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record.......2007-02-26

This is a beautiful, timeless album. My son just turned 30. He loved it when he was young, and his daughter loves it now. It's not too cutesy or goofy, but really good music done by wonderful artists.

4 out of 5 stars "In Harmony".......2007-02-03

"In Harmony" is a CD that I often checked out from the library when my children were small. Our favorites on the CD include James Taylor singing about Jelly Man Kelly and Bette Midler singing about Blueberry Pie. Linda Ronstadt sings about wanting a horse. Livingston Taylor, James' brother, sings about having his pajamas on.

Carly Simon and her sister are on the CD, also. The Simon-Taylor family get together on the song "In Harmony". Too bad that they didn't stay in harmony.

I received the CD in less than a week and it was still in the original shrink wrap.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to a classic.......2007-01-16

Music for the whole family; if you grew up with Sesame Street, or watched it with your own children, you'll enjoy this blend of compositions.

4 out of 5 stars Original is the best........2007-04-10

This is the original recording of the '60s Swingle Singers. It focuses on Bach and provides entertaining and intricate renditions of his works. I recently saw the New Swingle Singers, who were very good, but they are diverging into jazz and often sound like Manhattan Transfer. Their newer CDs all begin to sound alike. I prefer the original artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Swinging Bach.......2005-12-30

When the Swingle Singers take on Bach's polyphony at full speed, it's exhilarating. Very cleanly done, very fun, and the jazz drums and bass add nicely to the sound.
Like many people, I have a soft spot for this group because my parents listened to them. (Next time your favorite retro-hipster starts in, pop this disk in, followed by a little Switched-On Bach, and let the love/hate debate begin.)
I could have done without a few of the slow Bach chestnuts featured here (maybe the "Wachet Auf" wasn't overdone in 1963), but the strong numbers, such as the mini-epic "Sinfonia", with a great soprano solo, carry the album to a higher plane. The drummer overplays in a few spots, but overall this record just plain works.
Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I've been looking for this for a LONG time..........2005-06-19

I loved listening to this with my Dad in the 60's and 70's and had always wanted a "clean" copy of my own. I have the original LP, but the pops and hisses now mar the recording and let's face it, a CD is a lot easier to listen to. This is NOT the title or album cover of the LP issued in the US, but IS the same recording as the "Bach's Greatest Hits" LP released here in 1963 (or 1964) with the white album cover and grey line drawings of Bach et al. It is just as I remebered it. What a nice memory.

Dear Sirs! > I have not intention to buy the CD version of Jazz Sebastian Bach one of the highlights of the Swingle Singers. This is more testimony, but very, very rare, than professional review of one CD. But this text can be may be useful for your buyers. My English is not the best, so you fill free to rewrite this text in the way appropriate for you buyers.

Text of review

It was in Paris, France, probably on June 8th 1964. For the first time four ladies and four mans on stage in Cite Universite as vocal group Les >Swingle Singers. They open his first public appearance with Fugue in D Minor. Thirty seven years later I am seeing very clear those shine faces of artists, joyful that his project vocalize J. B. Bach is a true. I am hearing now one of the best singers in Europe, not only at that time, Christiane Legrand (sister of famous composer, conductor, piano player an even excellent singer M. Legrand). Hers voice in Aria is simply fantastic. I have the chance to hear this group on his second concert in Paris, several months later. This was also an excellent concert, but without unforgettable fire of the first one. I have 12 LP of this group even this performed by the group called Swingle II. If you hear the CD Jazz Sebastian Bach you would understand what told ones Charlie Parker. J. S. Bach is the greatest composer in the history of mankind. You would understand one other miracle, why last year Bobby McFerrin were able to improvise on Bach and at the same time the public on the square in Dresden sings Gounod's Ave Maria. > Igor Catic, Zagreb Croatia From time to time jazz presenter on Croatian broadcasting systems.

Forgive the cynicism, but it's hard to believe that South Africa's civil war was actually a successful one waged without a full-scale battle. Happy endings to tragic events seem to be the stuff of fairy tales rather than real life. Perhaps it's due to the fact that apartheid was a travesty that the colonialists couldn't continue to live with. More likely, it's the spirit of South Africa's black people that made it happen. This 29-track soundtrack for the Sundance-winning documentary features a musical history of the movement, often highlighting powerful rallying cries of revolution. There're songs from such well-known figures as Mariam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, and South African star Vusi Mahlasela, as well as members of Pretoria Central Prison and chanting crowds from various town hall meetings. Unlike typical CDs, the singers, musicians, and performances are less important; it's the premise that's the key here, and this moving collection adeptly captures the South African people's strength and resolve to win their battle for freedom. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars this cd changed my life.......2006-04-27

i saw the film; loved it. But i didn't *really* understand how great south african music was until i got this album. There are songs on here that give me goosebumps just thinking about them. And i still cry every time i listen to them, even after 40, 50, 60 repeats. A classic.

5 out of 5 stars See the DVD, then get the CD.......2005-03-21

If you've seen the great film Amandla! or have bought the DVD, do that before buying this CD. The CD is beautiful on its own, but since it is lacking in liner notes and translations, the DVD helps to put everything into context and enhances one's enjoyment of this music. My favorites here include "Sad Times Bad Times" from Miriam Makeba's 1959 musical play "King Kong" (I wish this soundtrack was available on CD in its entirety), the South African National Anthem, and the utterly beautuful and breathtaking "Untold Story." Anyone who hears that song after seeing it in the original film with dry eyes is someone with a serious lack of emotion! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Buy the CD, but be certain to see the film........2003-12-30

At a time in his life when most people are trying to figure out what is best for themselves, Lee Hirsch gave up everything to go to South Africa and begin documenting its music. Ten years later, the result of his efforst, "Amandla: Revolution in Four-Part Harmony," is a brilliant portrayal of the strength and courage of the resistance against Apartheid. Though some may find the notion romantic and unbelievable, rather than using bombs or guns to win the freedom and equality they longed for, they overcame their oppressors through song.
I was lucky enough to attend the Hollywood premiere of the documentary in February of 2003, and hear Mr. Hirsch describe the process of making the film. The thing that has stayed with me the most was shared by the executive producer, Sheila Nevins. She said that in her search to put score to scenes of horrific violence and oppression, she could find no "sad" music. All the music they heard was filled with hope, and most of all--joy. This, more than anything, represents the music on the soundtrack CD. While the soundtrack is extremely moving (Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica brought me near tears), I would urge a person unfamiliar with the names on the CD to first view the movie; the songs take on a life of their own once the stories behind them are told.

Album Description

Harmony Singing By Ear: A step by step approach for learning how to sing harmonies above and below a melody. Three CDs totaling three 1/2 hours of instructional narrative, fully produced music tracks and guide vocals. One, two or more singers can learn two and three-part harmony singing. Vocal coach Susan Anders has successfully used these methods for over twenty years with pop, R&B, folk, rock and country singers.

Harmony Singing By Ear uses two complementary methods to teach singers how to harmonize by ear. After reviewing some music theory basics, instructional sections walk you through how to find the upper and lower harmony parts for eight songs. Those same harmonies are sung on fully produced music tracks. On these tracks the vocal parts are panned to different speakers--singers can pan to one speaker and just hear their part, pan to the middle and hear both parts, or pan to the other speaker to practice with one or two other parts. In this way, beginning harmonizers can control how much or how little of the other voices they hear, making it easier to stay on their part. More confident harmonizers can sing without the guide vocals. Singers who simply want to learn and sing the harmony parts can skip the instructional tracks, go right to the music tracks, and pan their speakers to the right to learn the harmony part for each song.

Though much of Harmony Singing By Ear focuses on the how-tos of parallel harmonizing above and below a melody, singers will also learn about call-response, blue note, chromatic and block chord harmonies. Music tracks without vocals are also included so singers can practice their parts "without the training wheels". Plus, there's a supplementary section of exercises to build one's harmonizing skills. The songs range in style from pop to R&B to folk to modern rock to jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Best i've heard.......2007-05-05

I've been singing and teaching harmony for a long time now, and I must say that these CD's are the best i've come across. They are not overloaded with theory and musical jargon, which makes it easy for the non-musicians for follow. Great choice of songs too.

5 out of 5 stars A revolutionary product.......2006-01-10

I was clueless about harmony singing before using these CDs. Now I'm getting it-the lessons are very user-friendly and go at a good pace, and I'm learning things about music and singing that never made sense to me before. Good choice of songs, good method.

2 out of 5 stars Flats and Sharps.......2007-05-18

I enjoy the Swingle Singers very much but sadly, in this album they are flat on about half of the tracks. When they are on key, they are very, very good. When they are flat they are awful. Recommendation: buy a different Swingle Singers CD.

5 out of 5 stars Still new... and fantastic.......2007-03-25

As time goes by, these recordings seem to become better and better. Fresh, perfect... fantastic CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Swingle Singers Half Treasure -.......2007-03-10

If you love Bach and are a fan of the Swingle Singers, buy this CD. Fans of the Swingle Singers enjoy them for what they do to music - release it with air and bounce - and their style is perfectly suited for Bach. I couldn't enjoy it more. But the second Cd in this set is their treatment of Mozart, and, for me, it's inconsistent. This is due to the different styles of the two composers and I just think they match up better with Bach. But at this price, I shouldn't be complaining. The first CD alone is worth twice as much. Snatch it up!

5 out of 5 stars A capella reigns.......2007-01-12

Another fine offering by this group. Fun for classical music buffs and novices.

5 out of 5 stars Best Swingles Ever.......2006-02-16

If you know the Swingle Singers, you may expect jazzed-up Bach with a rhythm section. Now, don't get me wrong, i like that stuff, too, but that is just clean fun, while this is just Bach. No percussion, no jazzy rythym, just straight unaccompanied Bach. AND IT IS WONDERFUL.
Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars All highs and no lows!.......2007-01-04

If your a fan of close vocal harmonies and great arrangements you'll really enjoy this recording. And if the vocal arranging sounds familiar, it's because Gene Puerling (baritone, I think) did most of the writing for this group. You may be more familiar with his writing for the Singers Unlimited as well as his prevalent influence on the debut recording of the jazz vocal group, Take 6.
Also worth mentioning is the tremendous performance by the members of the Frank Comstock Orchestra. As a trumpet player, I would love to know who was on that session becaause they're all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant Kitsch.......2000-11-23

As a fan of standards in vocal jazz (Biiiiilllie!), and contemporary vocally-oriented music (i.e. Zap Mama, Bobby Mc Happy) the Hi-Lo's are a real treat- a singular American listening experience. Yes, there is the unavoidable mid-century kitsch factor, but who doesn't appreciate the pure artistic value of Herb Alpert every now and again? Truthfully, the Hi-Lo's unwaivering voices and sensitive arrangements bubble new breadth into old standards, with all the freshness of a tasty loaf of Wonder Bread. Try to listen to the Hi-Lo's with the same keen sagacity you would John Coltrane (or better yet McCoy Tyner)

5 out of 5 stars Harmony in Ultraviolet.......2007-06-07

We all knew that Tim Hecker had it in him--an A-plus after so many A-minuses, an album that fulfills all the promises of the respectively excellent Mirages and Radio Amor. Harmony's unified ambient suite is capable of releasing emotions that you never knew you had, laying the tension on thick and using the beatless format to pulsate, tug and spill over at just the right moments. Beneath the white noise decay and the frightening sound effects (scissors, helicopter blades) lies a deep core of sadness gripped by anxiety, and the unnerving paradox of extreme violence and ultimate serenity. Harmony in Ultraviolet is the soundtrack to the most cathartic 50 minutes of your life, and chronicles the longings of the heart more effectively than any piece of music in recent memory, ambient or otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars KI-LLLL-EEERRRRR.......2007-03-11

WOW! im so happy to have found this album! Just in time too as the wintry season is almost leaving us and these Harmonies in Ultraviolet really do fit that grey-sky over industrial wasteland vibe travelling from Manhattan down the Jersey Turnpike. While impressed with his previous efforts, I really found something.. lacking in them. Perhaps I had just caught Fennesz earlier and couldn't help a comparison. And this album has its comparisons as well, but what a tremendous production and editing feat this is. Harmony indeed. Standout tracks include 'Chimeras', 'Harmony in Blue I-IV', 'Dungeoneering', and everything in between. This is truly a 'full' album, where perhaps the independent parts won't provoke the same reaction as when it is heard in full. This is my pick for album of the year I just can't stop listening to this!

5 out of 5 stars Utter genius.......2006-12-09

The review by the San Fran guy's pretty much sum it up but I'll add this.

I often think of Hecker's sound as utter desolation, the last days of civilisation. I know in parts it can be uplifting (a few moments in Amour and Haunt Me especially) but for me it's the starkness and atmosphere that seperate it from anything else before.

Remember the Voyager space probe ? Travelling at million miles per day, 9 billion miles from the Sun and racing out of our solar system and into the infinite void of interstellar space ?

Well Harmony in Ultraviolet is it's soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Each song a weather worn snapshot, frayed and dusty, comfortable and lived in sounding........2006-11-14

Imagine the most beautiful music in the world. Then with an old thrift store camera, take a super grainy snapshot of that music. Fold up the photo and place it in an envelope and mail it to an address that no longer exists. 20 years later, happen upon an old abandoned post office, and discover that letter unopened, but browned with age, remove the photo and place it in your pocket. Lose those pants on a camping trip, only to discover them the next summer, all wadded up in a corner, sprinkled with a years worth of dust and cobwebs. Wash the pants, and only afterwards discover the photo. Prop in up in the window of the cabin to dry, where it sits soaking up the sun for the whole summer. Right before you leave, grab the photo of the most beautiful music in the world and place it in your book to mark your place. Place the book back on your shelf and forget all about it. Move several times over the course of the next several years, finally unpacking a dusty old trunk filled with books. Leaf through several of them, when suddenly the most beautiful music in the world flutters to the floor, dusty and tattered, worn and nearly transparent. Finally, tear it up into tiny pieces and drop them one by one into the speaker of an antique victrola, wind it up and what comes out will be Tim Hecker's Harmony In Ultraviolet.

We often reference Hecker when reviewing records by other practitioners of a similar soundmaking process, but there's something so pure and organic about the way Hecker composes and creates, how he deftly assembles and degrades his sounds and songs and melodies. Managing to sound modern but antiquated at the same time, viewing the world through sleep filled eyes, everything soft and fuzzy, sometimes intense and ominous, sometimes even dark and downright scary, but always suffused with a shimmering radiant warmth, making all of his sounds glow from within. Each song a weather worn snapshot, frayed and dusty, comfortable and lived in sounding. It's a music that requires close listening, a subtly immersive sound, but once inside it, once the sound is all around you, only then can you pick out all of the details, hear the hidden melodies, only then can you let go, and get completely lost in Hecker's gorgeous world of mysterious sound. Some of the most beautiful music in the world indeed.

5 out of 5 stars FRESHMEN CLASSICS.......2004-03-25

i owned both of these albums back in the sixties and was happy to see that they are now available on one cd . i have always believed that these two albums were the freshmen's best and i would recommend them both to anyone who appreciates what real music is supposed to sound like . no cacaphony , no screaming , no vulgarities, no unintelligble lyrics , just real music with the classic four freshmen open harmony sound. outstanding ........

1 out of 5 stars Not at their best...........2001-01-10

I am very surprised to read the rave reviews on this CD. Maybe the one I purchased is just a lemon. The sound quality is poor. Also the voices are distorted. Very disappointed. Years ago I owned the LP "Voices in Love." I think it was their best, and my favorite. I especially like the song "In the Still of the Night." Guess I'll continue to look for the albumn at record shows. Have found many Freshmen albums at used record shops, but "Voices in Love" is eluding me.

5 out of 5 stars The Height of Charm and Elegance.......1999-09-15

The Freshmen are the best thing that could happen to American Popular Song. Their gorgeous arrangements considerably enhance the harmonies of those marvellous melodies without ever destroying their basic richness. This particularly applies to the Love Lost and Voices in Love albums but to me the same can be said about most of the Freshmen Capitol output. Their reissues on the CD format are thus mostly welcome!

5 out of 5 stars ...Without a doubt , the best they ever recorded!.......1999-06-06

If your a fan of wonderful harmonies and fabulous arrangements ,'ya gotta have these.

I've had them on vinyl and never thought they'd be available on c.d. The last one I got was a gift from The Freshmen's former manager back in the early '70's. Ross sent me a note and said that , at the time ,the "Voices in Love" album hadn't been available on Capitol for years. What a great surprise to find it now.

I love these c.d.'s with soft candles , a tasty wine and tasty lady.

Enjoy , Freshman fans!

Beyond this recording's new age packaging and title is a splendid sampling of some of the world's finest choral music, sung by one of the world's outstanding choirs. This "anthology of sacred choral music" spans 400 years and includes such masterpieces as Allegri's Miserere, Bach's "Jesu, joy of man's desiring," and Barber's exquisite Agnus Dei, which is the composer's choral setting of his famous Adagio for Strings. Along the way we also hear Mozart's sublime "Ave verum corpus," Elgar's "Lux aeterna," and the Kyrie from Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. There has been a choir at England's New College, Oxford, since the year 1379, and this impressive line of experience shows in the intelligent, unfaltering, and finely polished performances by today's ensemble of 16 boys and 12 adults. --David Vernier

Not really my thing but mother in law loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2007-02-23

You'll love this music. This is music for all moments of your life

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-07-08

I'm a long-time listener of all things rock-'n-roll, from Classic rock, to Alternative, and even a little Metal. I first heard this CD while having dinner at a friends house a long time ago, and I loved it. I've always been enchanted with choir music, so I bought this CD. Well, after years of listening to it to help me to unwind in the evening, I somehow misplaced it. So I came to Amazon to order both I and II. Of the two CD's, the first one is still the best, and it still helps me to relax after a long day. The choir show tremendous range in their singing, the assorted instruments are well-played, and I can almost imagine myself sitting in a centuries-old cathedral, enjoying the music and how it rings throughout the cathedral.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Profound sublimity.......2006-02-27

This album offers music that is profoundly moving and sumbline. It takes the listener onto an inner journal of extraordinary emotional depths and heights

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2006-01-18

The first song I've heard on this CD is "Miserere Mei..." and I loved it the first minute. I've heard it from a friend who likes classical, and I would've never bought this on my own.

All other versions of these songs I've heard since don't compare to the versions on this CD. Maybe because it was my first listen, maybe they're just good.

"Pah-rum-a-pum-pum!" Yes, that was Low that provided the soundtrack for a Christmas Gap commercial. With a slowed-down version of "The Little Drummer Boy," the stark-sounding Minnesota trio subtly marched into the aural lexicon of pop culture. Low's fifth full-length release, Things We Lost in the Fire, is an appropriate follow-up to their auspicious television debut. The Minnesota trio's stark sound has evolved--ever so slightly--since their 1994 debut, I Could Live in Hope. Tracking their career is like surveying the changes in a river's course--progress is perceptible, but just barely. Still, while modesty and restraint are key fundamentals for Low, Fire is full of grace and revelations. While earlier efforts lacked in contrast, "Dinosaur Act" and "Like a Forest" build and swell like thunderstorms coming over the horizon. Drummer Mimi Parker's vocals on "Embrace" are particularly evocative of the trio's evolution; achingly vulnerable, she lulls the listener with a promise of sanctuary before "crushing your skull with my warming embrace." What a glorious way to go. --Andria Lisle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Slow is the new fast.......2007-01-11

This is a breath taking album. I literally have to make sure that I keep breathing...Not really.
When I first heard Low it didnt click with me all too well. I wanted it to be faster, but I was foolish. After hearing In Metal, which is more of a bitter sweet ballad, it kind of kicked me into the mode of their music. If you do not like Low, give them a chance. It took me a better part of a year but it will come to you.

Question. If someone called Low shoegazers whould they be wrong?

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful album filled with gorgeous, subtle music.......2006-08-12

I've become a fan of Low rather late in their career. About a year and a half ago I heard THE GREAT DESTROYER and was blown away by it, picking it up instantly. Recently I decided I wanted to hear more and after some investigation decided to pick this one up. I have to say that it really is better than the other album I had previously fallen in love with. The pace on this album is ever slower, among the slowest in all of rock, right down there with Galaxie 500 or American Music Club. It is compelling stuff and grows on you the more you listen to it.

The songs are just exquisite and despite their slow tempo are often filled with irresistible hooks. I find the duet, for instance, in the intro of "Closer" to be almost painfully beautiful, while "Dinosaur Act" is so lovely it almost qualifies as pop. "Sunflower" kicks the album off and is one of the best cuts on the disc. "Whore" is a bit more subtle than these, but equally gorgeous, and "Like a Forest" is another highlight. I think my favorite cut, however, is probably "Dinosaur Act." Great lyrics and great passion.

I can understand someone not liking this. If you only like happy music, or music that employs only fast tempos, this could drive you insane. But while I'm not patient in everything, I'm patient in my music, and I am utterly in love with the slow-tempoed beauties on this.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to the world of "slo-core".......2006-02-09

I just started listening to Low, and wish I had heard of them sooner. Some people call the music depressing or cold, while others find it pensive or minimalist. I think they reach a nice balance, where this is something you can listen to, strike a mood, and just kick back. If your looking for something more gloomy, check out titles that are closer to Goth (see Lycia), where upbeat stuff would be something like Red House Painters. Anyways, really great stuff here. Check it out, you might like it. :)

5 out of 5 stars sure to be a classic.......2004-03-15

i've never really been a low fan; they always seemed too... boring.

but this album is veering dangerously on perfect. steve albini's productions is potentially the best i've ever heard him do (which is saying quite a bit) and the songs are tremendous examples of the tremendous power of minimalism.

4 out of 5 stars a spooked hubley and kaplan.......2003-04-26

I don't know, maybe it's narrow to say that `Things We Lost In The Fire` is the murky, the arcane, backwoodsian cousin to Yo La Tengo when the latter skip noise for sweet, harmonious acoustica. Maybe, but it's a pretty good frame to reference. "When they found your body/giant Xs on your eyes/with your half of the ransom/I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers/and gave them to the night" responds the opening lyric, Parker and Sparhawks harmonising like a haunted Hubley and Kaplan. Maybe it's more upbeat than previous works but really even then it rarely rises above a hush, and `Dinosaur Act`, the most rockin' thing here, still manages to slope and saunter. The lyrics and the sometimes murky Albini mix might sound spooked and oblique but they're infused with subtle romanticism and moments of sublime beauty, "things we lost in the fire/how did we ever get by/words we'll never take back/hold me closer than that".
