The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04
The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".
Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".
Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.
For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.
This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.

Jesse Winchester has made such a good living writing songs for the likes of Wynonna Judd, Emmylou Harris, and Reba McEntire that he doesn't really have to make his own albums. In fact, the revealingly titled Gentleman of Leisure is only his second album in 18 years. It was worth the wait, for it sounds like one of Lyle Lovett's late-1990s albums. There's the same dry, wry voice; the same weird mix of '40s swing, '60s R&B, and '70s progressive country; and the same conversational lyrics that seem casual at first but contain memorable aphorisms. Lovett's Texas sensibility is replaced, though, by Winchester's Memphis roots, which are reinforced by Steve Cropper's presence on songs about Elvis and a favorite soul-music club. Producer Jerry Douglas has also called in bluegrass guitar whiz Bryan Sutton, blues-guitar virtuoso Mike Henderson, country star Vince Gill, and gospel's Fairfield Four. Winchester's songwriting is the star attraction, though, thanks to music that marries hillbilly tunefulness to swampy Delta grooves and Zen lyrics that explore how love can strip us of pride and power and still make us strong. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

"No Pride at All" is also very mellow instrumentally, but absolutely devastating emotionally. And "devastating" is the only word I can use to describe it.
The other songs vary from above average to good, but the presence of these two songs makes the album a must-buy, in my opinion.

Multi-instrumentalist Ricky Skaggs is one of those country stars who's done it all. At age seven he appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs, by 15 he was a member of Ralph Stanley's legendary outfit, and by 23 he was the driving force behind Emmylou Harris's Hot Band. On his own Skaggs has created everything from bluegrass to trad-country to Nashville pop. Country Gentleman collects the first 10 years of his remarkable solo career, and it includes plenty of hits like "Heartbroke," "Honey (Open That Door)," "Highway 40 Blues," and his No. 1 version of Bill Monroe's signature tune "Uncle Pen." Start with this, and then check out the fabulous Bluegrass Rules. --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:

Bluegrass music for the eighties.......2003-02-16
Among the classic tracks here are Crying my heart out over you, I don't care, Heartbroke, Highway 40 blues, Don't cheat in our hometown, Honey open that door and Uncle Pen. All those tracks were from his first three Epic albums, which I still think were his best original albums.
Ricky continued to record plenty of great songs, so his chart success continued for a few more years, reaching the top of the charts in the late eighties with Loving only me. Ricky showed how bluegrass could appeal to a wider audience. Although he faded from the spotlight in the nineties, he continued to make excellent music. Meanwhile, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Ralph Stanley and others have further increased the popularity of bluegrass music.
This collection contains all the essential tracks from Ricky's most successful years, including all his big hits on the country charts.
Exceptional Talent.......2001-09-20
All the Best over Two CDs.......2001-08-30
Not possessing the matinee idol good looks of a George Strait, it is a tribute to his immense skills as a musician (fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and banjo) and singer (one of themost supple tenors around) that Skaggs was able to make such a big impact in modern country music. An impact this 32 track, 2 disc best of captures with every significant hit Skaggs recorded for the Sugar Hill and Epic labels between 1981 and 1992.
Skaggs' early releases were dominated by remakes of songs made popular in the 50s and 60s by his bluegrass heroes with Flatt & Scruggs "Don't Get Above Your Raisin'" and "Crying My Heart Out Over You" getting the set off to a lesiurely start, followed by Reno & Smiley's "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could," the Stanley Brothers' "Don't Cheat In Our Hometown" and Bill Monroe's toe-tapping "Uncle Pen." Interspersed covers of Webb Pierce's "I Don't Care" and "Honey (Open That Door)" offer a change of pace dripping with classic country and western style.
As the first disc winds to an end and the second disc begins, Skaggs adds a bit more variety to his musical pallet. Power pickers like "Country Boy," moving ballads such as "You Make Me Feel Like A Man," and western swing on the order of "Love's Gonna Get You Someday" enter the fray, but bluegrass remains the predominant style throughout. Disc two also includes some great collaborations: the gently rollicking "Love Can't Ever Get Better Than This" with wife Sharon White and the fiddlin' foot-stomper "Restless" with the New Nashville Cats (Mark O'Connor, Steve Wariner, and Vince Gill).
By the early 90s, traditional country was bombarded by the noisier sounds of contemporary artists like Garth Brooks, and country radio was concentrating on artists under 40. Skaggs was no longer an upper-chart placing presence and in 1992, he and Epic parted ways. Thankfully this thorough document exists of Skaggs at his best to remind the younger country audience (and artists) that a little bit of bluegrass is good for your health - and country radio.

Beware the cry of critics everywhere: Cracker have run out of material. But hold on, not so fast. On the fourth recording from this eclectic roots-pop quartet, frontman David Lowery may indeed address the topic of success, celebrity, and the life of a rock band (i.e., his life), but that's hardly saying he's at a loss for originality. With characteristic irony, these 16 songs sprawl across a landscape of misbegotten fame, lost love, even religious faith. The opener, "The Good Life," is vintage Cracker, replete with throbbing percussion and frontier twang. From there, Gentleman's Blues undulates its way through the retro-Americana reminiscence "Been Around the World" and thrusts guitarist John Hickman on the mic for the bluegrassy "Trials and Tribulations" before finally settling into the irresistibly tender strains of the title track. That kind of Cracker soul will never grow old. --Nick HeilCustomer Reviews:

The Good Life.......2006-03-07
So I made a point of setting out to correct the errors of the decade, seeking out the best of what I had missed. 1997's Gentleman's Blues was my first find, and it really is the Kerosene Hat of my adult years if that makes any sense. Kerosene Hat captured perfectly the anxieties of being young and stupid, allowing me to laugh at myself as I sang along to these remarkably absurd songs that somehow fit very logically into my life. Gentleman's Blues is the sound of the once young and stupid realizing that he (or she) is all grown up and facing responsibilities, relationships, and other adult traumas. The now-middle-aged David Lowry chooses to confront these concerns in a song cycle that is much more revealing than anything he had previously released, except perhaps Camper Van Beethoven's Key Lime Pie album.
The humor here is now shaded with a kind of cynicism, or even fear of success and what it brings. The sound itself is more subdued, with classic rock keyboards playing a more prominent role than they had previously. This down-to-Earth approach makes the album a steady source of comfort for someone like myself, who also has his issues and fears related to growing up, having a career and a serious relationship. I find myself singing along in the car as if these songs were written by me, for me. That is a rare thing.
One last note- it is interesting to see the reactions of critics and fans to this album. When it was released, the popularity of alt-guitar-pop bands was sadly waning. Many fans were either turned off by the previous album (The Golden Age- a mediocre effort) or found this one too far removed from the carefree Kerosene Hat. Critics generally praise the album but I haven't seen it turn up on any "best of" lists for the 1990s. Basically, this record is more likely now to turn up in used bins than anywhere. And that is a sad state of affairs. I urge you to buy it and really listen, make it your own. I can only hope that the next time a band this good comes along (and there are several of them out there now), they aren't neglected.
Good Album by a Great Band.......2003-09-02
Some real gems: "My Life is Totally Boring...", "Hold of Myself", and "I Want Out of the Circus" are great fun. "Trials & Tribulations" and "Wedding Day" illustrate just how unclassifiable Cracker are. "The Good Life" is an energetic start. And "Unnamed track 24" deserves a name: a wonderful showcase of their new bassist's talent--she out Bonnie-Raitts Bonnie Raitt!
"Hallelujah" is actually quite beautiful, in contrast to many of Cracker's "slow" songs which tend to be.... well, slow.... (This general trend is also excepted, in spades, by "I Want Everything
A good album by a great band, but (as with much of their stuff) a bit too much left off the cutting floor...
Other highlights from the album include the gorgeous "Lullabye," and the rocker "My Life is Totally Boring Without You" that is as close to a signature tune as Lowery can get. There's also some hidden material with a strong Blues bent, which is fitting of the whole album's more adventuresome style. It might be a tad overlong with a few bland songs, but it is nice to see Cracker back near the top of their game.
Overall, a mini-comeback album from Virginia's best known rock band.

Customer Reviews:
What if you were BP and Tunick, professionals as you are, recording a RH album for Angel eight days after 9/11? Would you be at your best? And singing "well worn, sentimental" RH songs recalling a time when NYC was the Great Big Apple of the World. Wouldn't a lump be in your throat? Listen to "It Might as Well Be Spring" again. Does it sound cheerful and relaxed? Or a little sad?
My friends, this is BP's 9/11 tribute to a City that has treated her like royalty. With Dame and Dope being the only exceptions, perhaps Tunick's otherwise subdued orchestrations reflect the mood of the day and of the performers and engineers present at the studio. This is why I heartily recommend this recording to BP fans. I didn't get it either until I read the stats.
While her beautiful voice is still intact and capable of being as gorgeous as ever, she just doesn't seem to breath life into any of these songs. Even "Some Enchanted Evening" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" -- two songs that beg for emotion -- don't even get near the credit they deserve. And during some of the tunes, her voice seems to almost crack, although it never quite does.
I don't want to sound mean here. I love Bernadette Peters; but I also know she is much better than this album. Want proof? Purchase the cast recording of Gypsy :)
Her masterful concert for PBS was done just a couple years earlier. It's almost hard to believe this is the same energetic and spunky singer.
It's a grand night for singing? One wouldn't think so by listening to this.
I feel like a traitor, but I just cannot recommend this CD.
Not that there's not some fun in there, too. "The Gentleman is a Dope" and her version of "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame" (she is the first female to record this, I might add!) are great examples of how she is able to bring her wonderful comic abilities into the music of perhaps the greatest team of composers ever.
Her renditions of songs like "Something Good", "Some Enchanted Evening" and "If I Loved You" are enough to make you believe in love all over again. Then, you have the playful "Mister Snow", which seems like it was written just for Bernadette, and "You'll Never Walk Alone", which still sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.
But let's not forget the fabulous opening tune "It's A Grand Night for Singing", her beautiful version of "It Might As Well Be Spring", the light and lovely "Out Of My Dreams", the extremely enjoyable "So Far", a terrific interpretation of the classic "Something Wonderful" and the carefree "I Haven't Got A Worry in the World".
Each and every one of these tunes is a treasure. This is a wonderful mixture of some well-known and some more obscure Rodgers and Hammerstein melodies... a mixture which is only made better by Bernadette's extraordinary ability to interpret a song- a skill that has helped to make her the Broadway legend she is. It is a must for not only musical theatre fans, not only R&H fans, not only fans of Bernadette, but anyone who is looking for something that's really worth listening to!

(if im not mistaken, tom pettys keyboardist shows up a few times here.) they do it all, and david lowerys lyrics paint a great picture of what it is to be cracker and lifes ups and downs. you have the moody star, to the wistful been around the world. the haunting james river to the capmper vanish wryness of i want out of the circus. then johnny comes along and lays down some blues grass beauty in trials and tribulations and wedding day.just listen to the title track gentlemans blues, (it takes the life out of you, practically) and you know why this is a winning combo of a band who knows what they are doing wether rock, blues, roots rock or whatever thet decide to conquer.
but i know what your saying "but its nothing like their song low!" .... well, good! this a more mature cracker, and i like it.

You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.
If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.
