An album that's justifiably titled. Carlos "Patato" Valdes is indeed a legend of Cuban percussion, having played with Herbie Mann and Tito Puente among others, before leading his own ensembles. This record compiles tracks from his two Ritmo y Candela recordings of the mid-'90s, and an absolute joy it is. Patato's congas percolate at the front of the mix, heading a band comprised of some superb, and often adventurous (check out the piano on "Son de Patato"), Cuban jazz players. But things become especially interesting when African players join the mix on "Kora Son" and "Senor Blues/Mbuka Enoka" as the Horace Silver classic mutates into West African melody. Throughout it's Patato who's in command, his playing an inspiration to the younger generation accompanying him. He might be in his 70s here, but like the Buena Vista Social Club musicians, he's still very much at the top of his game and making a very joyful noise indeed. Age is nothing but a number. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Legend Indeed.......2007-03-22

Cuban congero innovator Carlos "Patato" Valdes has added rhythmic spice to Afro-Cuban jazz albums for over fifty years and is still going strong. This compilation reissues selections from two Grammy nominated recordings of the mid 90's. Patato is joined by fellow percussion greats Orestes Vilato and Changuito, and features the fine pianist Rebecca Mauleon and multi-wind player Enrique Fernandez. In fact, everyone on these recordings contributes zesty flavors to a tasty stew. If you hunger for fine Afro-Cuban jazz, this album will satisfy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Town is a wonderful show.......2004-10-25

This is a terrific show. It has a famous composer, great tunes and a good, upbeat story. Why it has so thoroughly faded from memory is a question that puzzles me greatly.

The orchestrations are attributed to another individual, but Bernstein must have taken some substantial role in their creation, for large parts of "Wonderful Town" resemble only one other musical, "West Side Story."

Rosalind Russell is the star here, and rightly so. She sings--or rather croaks--her material very well, indeed. Only in "Swing" is she overmatched by the musical requirements and even then she fights them to a draw.

Edith Adams is very good, too, as Eileen. I think of her as Edie Adams, a sixties icon, wife of comedian Ernie Kovacs, mayhem-minded member of the Nairobi Trio and super-sexy pitchwoman for White Owl Cigars. I had no idea that she had also starred on Broadway. It was a pleasant surprise to find her here.

The men in the lead parts sing in that typical Broadway growl: perfect diction and lousy tone. They are endearingly awful. And I mean that in the best possible sense.

Five stars, no doubt about it!

4 out of 5 stars Light and lively musical comedy .......2004-08-07

The first cast album of WONDERFUL TOWN sounds even better than ever in Decca's latest remastering. The sound is still somewhat flat (as are all Decca albums from the 40s/50s) but the Decca engineers have worked wonders on the 50 year old tapes making them sound as good as possible. Rosalind Russell was a perfect choice to play the acerbic Ruth. She doesn't have much of a singing voice but the songs were tailored to her limited range and she makes the character come alive. Edith Adams sounds properly winsome as her sister Eileen. In the supporing roles, Jordan Bentley comes off best as Wreck, but George Gaynes makes for a ponderous, somehwat stuffy Bob Baker.

In terms of album production, Decca eliminated the Overture and some of the dance music, and re-arranged "Christopher Street" to eliminate the spoken vignettes. Otherwise the score is presented in a faithful aural re-creation. The booklet offers a detailed synopsis to guide you through the score.

The bonus tracks are six songs from ON THE TOWN originally recorded when that show was playing on Broadway. This is NOT the definitive recording of ON THE TOWN. For that you need the 1960 album avaialble on Sony. But, the excerpts heard here provide an enjoyable bonus.

5 out of 5 stars a must-have recording for REAL Broadway fans.......2002-12-26

This marvellous new re-issue of WONDERFUL TOWN is a must-have for Broadway buffs. In fact, this is really two albums in one, as it also contains the rare 1945 studio recording of ON THE TOWN as a bonus!

The story is based on the play "My Sister Eileen", written by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov; as well as the stories written by Ruth McKenney. The play was later turned into a successful Columbia film starring Rosalind Russell (as Ruth Sherwood) and Janet Blair as Eileen. Several years later Columbia released a musical version (following the success of WONDERFUL TOWN) which starred Janet Leigh and Betty Garrett.

WONDERFUL TOWN originally starred Rosalind Russell (repeating her film role) as Ruth and Edith 'Edie' Adams as Eileen. The cast also included George Gaynes (GIGI, 'Punky Brewster') as the romantic male lead.

The score by Betty Comden and the late Adolph Green is gorgeous, and features the comical "100 Easy Ways", the lilting "A Little Bit in Love" and the showstopping "Conga!" and "Wrong-Note Rag".

No Broadway-recording collection is complete without the original cast of this landmark musical.

This re-issue from the superb Decca Broadway range also includes the rare 1945 set of ON THE TOWN, which featured original cast-members Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Nancy Walker singing their songs from the show, with Mary Martin singing "Lonely Town" and "Lucky to Be Me".

Highly-recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard Bart-stein? Listen for yourself...........2002-09-23

Leonard Bernstein never erred on the side of subtlety, and this original-cast album contains two of his most enjoyable essays in musical near-mayhem: "Christopher Street" and "The Wrong Note Rag." The former is vastly like the theme music to "The Simpsons," and the listener can decide for himself how much of a coincidence this is or isn't. "The Wrong Note Rag" uses the tritone of the scale and a varied meter to make life difficult for the singers and anyone trying to count along. Unlike so many send-ups of the 1920s, this song ingenioulsy captures the musical and lyrical feel of novelty numbers like 1924's "Fascinating Rhythm"--or, better yet, the slightly later "Crazy Rhythm." A parody of the 1920s that shows any sense of the 1920s is a rare item, indeed. "Wonderful Town" is an interesting, enjoyable, and valuable historical piece, and I can only imagine what later performers did with it. I don't want to know.

5 out of 5 stars Quality over quantity.......2002-05-19

Yes, the original 1953 cast recording of "Wonderful Town" may not be the most complete cast recording of the hit musical BUT I would wholeheartedly reccommend this CD over any other version. Why? Because of its original cast members and its original orchestrations! Rosalind Russell is peerless as Ruth Sherwood (I consider her version of "One Hundred Easy Ways" one of the funniest songs in musical theatre history) and Edie Adams shines through radiantly. Listen to her sing "A Little Bit In Love" to understand what I'm talking about. Also, the original orchestrations gtive this CD more vibrance than any of the later incarnations INCLUDING the 1999 studio recording, which to me sounds too mechanical and the British orchestrator doesn't seem to get the rhythms right. The original cast recording is A MUST for the true theatre fan, abridged score or not

For his 20th (!) Concord album and follow-up to his Grammy-winning Latin Soul, master conguero Poncho Sanchez takes cues from the Buena Vista Social Club and some homegrown Philly organ soul. Sanchez's music is traditional, but infused with creative brass arrangements, simmering rhythms, and explosive percussion, and his mambos and montunos are impossible to resist. With organist Joey DeFrancesco, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and traditional Cuban vocal troupe The Ortiz Brothers, Soul of the Conga is full-on funky, with popping rhythms and meaty solo excursions. DeFrancesco boils on "Moon Pie," which recalls Eddie Harris, and you'll find the dance floor irresistible when "Haitian Lady" kicks in. The Ortiz Brothers get busy on the fragrant "Asi Asi," the "Oye Como Va"-ish groove of "Oye Lo," and the organ-brass mix of fantasy and melancholia on "Virtue." Throughout, Sanchez's horn arrangements keep everything cooking, like spicy sauce over a percolating percussion barbecue. Alas, Blanchard's lovely brass teases on "Stella on Starlight" do nothing for the album's one dud, which sounds lifeless, airless, and oddly grooveless. But that is a rare moment on a brilliant album, which closes with the heavy conga-bongo jamming of "Rumba De Po-Tiz." Outstanding! --Ken Micallef

chez manages to keep his recordings fresh by bringing in guests...this is the most musically satisfying of his recent efforts and perhaps all recent salsa recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Poncho!.......2000-09-27

A new release by Poncho Sanchez is always a pleasant surprise. On the one hand, Poncho plays what I like to call, fundamental Latin-Jazz. However, Poncho always manages to come up with a few new surprises (and guests) along the way.

On SOUL OF THE CONGA we experience a little "Changui tipico" from Cuba with Poncho and the Ortiz Brothers. Next, some Latin-Jazz with special guest, Joey De Francesco and his Hammond B-3 Organ.

In my opinion, the only other musician that could hold his own in a Latin setting was the late, great Charlie Palmieri. However, Joey De Francesco does an admirable job of adding a new element to the music without overpowering the rest of the band.

Poncho has matured as a band leader since his apprenticeship with the late master of the vibraphone, Cal Tjader.

I really enjoyed this CD and highly recommend it. Thank You Poncho for keeping it real!

5 out of 5 stars "digs deep into the Soul of Jazz - Viva Latin Jazz".......2000-09-17

In a fiery follow-up to his Grammy Award-winning "Latin Soul", the master conguero Poncho Sanchez, digs deep into this his latest release from Concord Records - "Soul of the Conga". Here, Sanchez presents his own brand of Latin jazz, infused with soul jazz of the Hammond B-3 phenomenon with Joey DeFrancesco, and the cool-tones of trumpeter Terence Blanchard, featuring the traditional, vintage Cuban roots of changui with The Ortiz Brothers.

Stand outs: "JOSEITO", augmented blues, perfect for DeFrancesco's grooving organ, with Scott Martin the composer of this selection, on tenor-sax with a solid solo - "DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES", from the late great composer Henry Mancini, Latinized version with intoxicating rhythm and DeFrancesco infectious style comes through with flying colors.

Highlight: "STELLA BY STARLIGHT", Victor Young's haunting tune, with the smooth-tones of Terence Blanchard on trumpet, simply classic and never sounding better, by Sanchez and friends.

Wonderful to see Latin jazz music growing all over the world, receiving the recognition they truly deserve. This album and music is not just for Latino people, but for everyone - gets under your skin and spreads enjoyment throughout your soul!

The inspired moods in which Morton Gould and his orchestra were inmersed when this recording was made was simply anthologic . Gould literally caught the perfect balance and the idomatism of Ernesto Lecuona , a cuban composer and author of Malagueña An emblematic song played for artists of the high of Paco de Lucia , Carlos Montoya , Jose Feliciano and the most famous orchestras of the world as Paul Mauriat ,or Frank Purcel .
This CD provides you a selection of well known and unknown pieces of that talented musician . It is a magnificent opportunity to know the high lyricism and latin flavour of Ernesto Lecuona .
Bravo for Morton Gould!

In the 50's and 60's one of the biggest artists on RCA Red Seal was Morton Gould and his Orchestra. Recording staples like Grand Canyon and Billy the Kid kept the record company in the spotlight, but occasionally the conductor was able to do what he wanted. These were produced as Jungle Drums in 1955 and More Jungle Drums in 1964 Gould wrote the transcriptions of these piano pieces for these releases. RCA has digitalized the originals and presented them here as a set. The recording quality is first rate and packaging with information on the composer is welcome. This is a wonderful CD to experiment with to discover composers that are not in the mainstream. Well worth the discounted price here too.

The aptly named Conga Kings isn't a cutting contest; it's a celebration of good fellowship among three great percussionists from two generations. On board for this mind-boggling good set of son--the style that's found such acceptance thanks to the platinum Buena Vista Social Club album--are Candido, Patato Valdes, and Giovanni Hidalgo. The music's light but insistent touch is perfectly realized here, with the three men pushing the other players forward and weaving their lines through each other's contributions. Expertly sequenced to allow the group to shine at varied tempos, the album ends with "Conga Kings Grand Finale," a seven-minute-plus affirmation of the musicians' vast talents and great affinity for one another. --Rickey Wright

Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green's 1953 collaboration in Wonderful Town doesn't lack for recordings, including two good studio casts from 1998 and 1999. Yet the uncommonly funny show hadn't received a proper Broadway revival until this 2003 production. As Ruth Sherwood, a role created by Rosalind Russell, Donna Murphy gives a glorious five-star star performance, and nowhere is it more obvious than on "Conga!" and "Swing," the latter a delirious spoof of 1950s Greenwich Village hipsterisms. As Eileen Sherwood, Jennifer Westfeldt doesn't have the crystalline pipes of Audra McDonald (from the 1999 album) but she gives a warm performance that comes across well on CD. The rest of the cast is studded with pros who take obvious delight in the show, and music director Rob Fisher polishes Bernstein's score to a gleam. Truly, Broadway doesn't get much better than this. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Town (2003).......2007-02-21

Frankly, I got this album for one song..."A Hundred Ways to Lose a Man", which I heard on the Braodway station of our digital cable network. I was extremely entertained by the song and loved the style portrayed in this album's particular rendition of it. I got it in order to perform the song myself for a benefit performance. I am very pleased to have it in my collection. As far as the rest of the album is concerned...one has to be "in the mood". It can be a bit annoying at times. Not my favorite Leonard Bernstein...doesn't compare to West Side Story...rather fluffy in comparison and silly, but that's what was intended.

This show is nice, very broadway. The music is nice, lyrics fun, and whole show a nice piece. It isn't something I would listen to over and over which is why it's only getting three stars, but it isn't something that I won't play from time to time. Of the two recordings I have (this one and the 2004 revival) there are MINISCULE differences, but I would say this is the better of the two. I like Donna Murphy's character over Brooke Shields. Good CD for collectors and new broadway listners alike. Fav Song: "Conga"

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful wonderful town!!.......2005-05-19

This is an excellent piece of work. Delightful. Charming. Splendid. Funny. Enjoyable. There are so many songs that stand out on this soundtrack, paticularly "one hundred easy ways." Evey time I hear I just can't help but break out in laughter. Excellent soundtrack; a must purchase!!

4 out of 5 stars Really Good, But..........2005-02-01

This may be the prime example of how a live performance transcends any recorded experience. I have read all the rave reviews of Donna Murphy's performance and trust people's judgment: she must have been wonderful in person. In this recording, however, she struggles through four or five different accents, settling somewhere between a voice from Missippi by way of New York.It seems less a performance than a gimmick.

As a kid I heard my parents play the Rosalind Russell version of this show a hundred times and I guess she is imprinted in my mind as Ruth Sherwood.

The orchestrations here sound magnificent and there are a few tracks added which round out the experience.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST!.......2004-12-16

Of ALL the musicals I've seen on broadway, I love this one the most! Donna Murphy was amazing, and the rest of the cast was wonderful, too! I think this soundtrack is better than the original version - a must have.

The conga drum chair was always the position of honor in Cal Tjader's Latin-jazz band. In 1975, California's Poncho Sanchez took over the chair and held it until Tjader died in 1982. Since then, Sanchez has emerged as one of the top congueros and bandleaders in the genre, because he has synthesized the styles of all his predecessors into a sound that is more fluid than frenetic, more melodic than manic. No one influenced him more than Santamaria, and Sanchez's fifteenth album as a leader reunites the mentor and protégé on half of the 10 tracks. The horn and piano parts are respectable if not special, but the real action is in the percussion section, where student and teacher remind each other of the many ways to chop up a measure of music. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic display by El Mejor.......2001-07-16

Yes, the tempo is slow, but Santamaria and Poncho on the same recording itself is enough to make this worth listening to. The conga interaction with the rest of the percussion and the rest of the instruments is flawless. I could listen to this album all day! I think that this ranks high on my list of Sanchez albums.

5 out of 5 stars One of Poncho Sanchez's Best.......2001-04-22

As far as I know, Mongo Santamaria came out of semi-retirement to play on this CD, and his presence adds greatness to an already very good concept album. "Besame Mama" is the vocal highpoint--so good it's chilling. Virtually every selection is a smoker.

2 out of 5 stars Dullsville.......2000-09-14

Sure, Watermelon Man (patterned after the Gerald Wilson recording) is fun, but the rest is unimaginative and uninspired. Mostly it's about the band leader's bongo solos, which are boring indeed. A genuine disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2000-06-12

I disagree with the last review. On the contrary, this has emerged to me as the best Poncho Sanchez album. There are no weak cuts composed by the band (which does often happem), and the percussion is out of this world. It is true that the piano parts are weak, and have been since Charlie Otwell left the band, but where else do you have so much play on percussion during the montuno sections? The kind of percusive improvization you see on this album is badly needed in Latin Jazz. Yes the tempos or slow, but enjoy how the musicians weave through the music at the end of each cut, draw it out, and work with it. I prefer this to up tempo cuts with tight arangements. The percussion alone, which emerges strongly at the end of each tune, makes this album unique, and perhaps the most truly latin Broderie : Chambres d'enfants

The reigning superstars of Latin percussion, Conga Kings Candido Camero, Carlos "Patato" Valdes, and Giovanni Hidalgo have among them worked with everybody from Tito Puente to Dizzy Gillespie. This CD finds the trio performing Latin and jazz classics in the descarga format: a type of Cuban jam-cum-improv session. With the zesty arrangements of ex-Machito arranger Ray Santos, the congueros--along with alto saxophonist Phil Woods, salsa trombonist Jimmy Bosch, and trumpeter Chocolate--turn classic tracks like Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco," Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia," and the Duke Ellington/Juan Tizol number "Caravan" into fast and folkloric showstoppers. On "Conga Descarga," the players engage in a heavy percussion discussion that illustrates the jaw-dropping power of Afro-Cuban music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

This Cd is a great chance to know the Afro-Cuban Music in your best executations. Listen the trio playing makes me think "Yeah! I wanna know this place!"

1 out of 5 stars .... HYBRID CD is a joke !!.......2003-09-11

...The surround sound on this disc in non-existent. There is NO center channel on the multi channel layer. If you are serious about multi channel recordings this is the worst ... This label should be ashamed of itself to mislead the public into thinking this is some kind of new level in recorded music. ...

5 out of 5 stars THE CONGA KINGS-Vol.2- "JAZZ DESCARGAS".......2002-10-15

In their second album for Chesky, "THE CONGA KINGS" prove they are the Conga Kings. Candido, Patato and Giovanni are at their best in this sequel and now this magnificent ensemble got even better with Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet. His performance on Chano Pozo's "Tin Tin Deo" is one of his very best ever.
Don't miss this great CD by "THE CONGA KINGS", I guarantee it will become a favorite in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great way to start listening to Afro-Cuban music.......2001-11-22

Humbled by the opportunity to be the first of (I believe) many who will praise this disk. With apologies for all the afro-cuban music I haven't heard, this is the best I've ever heard. It sounds like an inspired gathering of these legendary performers on a day when everyone was very, very into the groove, muy muy en el gran tumbao.I would compare it with some of the best American jazz albums I've ever heard (vintage Lester Young, Holiday, Armstrong, Oscar Peterson -- in their modes). I believe it might be a superb introduction to afro-cuban because the rhythmic layers are, in this case, transparent -- you hear these rhythms as the modes of musical thinking they have always been. But the horns, flutes and tres (sort-of guitar) lines "overhead" are the best I've ever heard in this genre, particularly Chocolate's trumpet solo on "Tin Tin Deo."
