A guilty pleasure.......2003-07-27

I kind of feel bad recommending, and with four stars nonetheless, a recording of such shameless and unartistic music. However, if you just got a new speaker system or something and need to break it in, this is your CD.

The word of the day for this CD is LOUD. Clear? Sometimes. Impassioned? Occasionally. Artistic? Rarely. But deafening with a side of deafening served with stentorian sauce? Yes, and incessantly.

If that's what you're looking for, then I suppose it should get five stars. The real caveat here is that the informational liner notes so oft-expected with classical music recordings are simply missing. There are liner notes, but any respect for the represented artists is downgraded further when sometimes the name of the piece you're listening to is unclear. The makers of this CD were so enamored with their own "Track Title"s that the real names of the pieces are often butchered.

Oh, well. This is still a lot of fun to listen to. You're just going to have to do your own research for the rest of the story.

The previous reviewer thinks that Hekla is the name of the composer who wrote this record's final track. It is not. The composer's name is Jon Leifs (1899-1968). Hekla is the name of the volcano.

The inner truth.......2002-11-19

I obtianed a copy of this album from a friend of mine who came from the US. At first the album seems to be very smooth and haunting, but the latter word "Haunting" seems to grow on you. The sounds create pictures on your mind and take you out of the normal everyday world into a mysterious but familiar places. Yes, this is the true story of a land forgoten and the music sends shivers in your spine. There is hope at the end of the tunnel and you can feel it after feeling the heavy bombardment of passing pictures in front of your brain.

I love this album and recommend it to everyone who dares to think.

The Deller Consort has long been a favorite among lovers of Medieval, Renaissance, and Restoration vocal music, and when it comes to Elizabethan music, no name is more prominent than that of John Dowland, whose "Airs & Partsongs" are now available under the title of Awake Sweet Love [bold] on Vanguard Classics OVC 8112. Here are superlative renditions of 15 tracks of Dowland's vocal output (with a galliard thrown in: you saw two of them danced in the recent film "Elizabeth") sung by the Deller Consort and Alfred Deller himself as soloist. This is not the bawdy, backstreet songs featured on some other recordings but the heightened "art" songs demanded by the court and by the noble houses of the time. The very titles say it all" "Wilt though, unkind, thus leave m?" "In darkness let me dwell," "Flow my tears," and so on. Beautiful as music, fascinating as a look into the past.

Patchy, with some fine moments.......2003-06-14

The lively tracks fare best here. There is a lot to like about those particular tracks and the period tongue (loov instead of love, coom instead of come, etc) is not nearly as cumbersome as it might have been, due to the convincing performances of the singers.
However, the slower numbers are often, in my opinion, rather sour.
Having heard this disc several times, it strikes me that it becomes less attractive over time, with the novelty of the approach soon wearing thin.
Still, some tracks are very lively and the artists are obviously having fun bringing a rather unique angle to these pieces, so it might well appeal to those who like something unusual.
Recording quality is fine, though the final fade-out is clumsily managed.

Brilliant and alive!.......2002-10-07

This is a fresh, vibrant recording of a cross-section of Dowland's music, and will quickly dispel any myth of Dowland always being a composer of melancholy!
The singers use Elizabethan pronunciation, which can be quite revelatory.
