Call this the melodic side of the Romany diaspora, an easier companion than the Rough Guide: Music of the Gypsies, which covered not only Central Europe but also the Indian roots and even British tradition of the "traveling people," as they're known. Gypsy Caravan concentrates its energy on the song element, which can range from the klezmer style of Romanyi Rota to the more folkish quality of Ando Drom. The influence of the Rom on Spanish music is explored in the flamenco of both Thierry Robin and Miguel Angel Cortés, connecting the dots between cultures and emphasizing the influence of the this oft-persecuted people. Frequently life-affirming in its joy, but also capable of aching, lamenting sorrow, Gypsy Caravan shines a warm light on one facet of an ancient and complex culture, making for a strong introduction to some intoxicating music. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Music- Buy it today!.......2005-09-08
My husband and I LOVE this cd, the songs are well crafted and catchy, the artists are highly talented, and you will be tapping your foot without knowing you did it!- I dance and sing along to this cd, and you will also. Whereas it may not cover all the areas that the Rom have traveled, I highly recommend this compilation as a great starter or addition to any collection. If you are a Dancer- this CD is a must have. We love to listen to it on road trips as the miles slip by hardly noticed through the joy of the music.
A good sampler........2004-02-02
The music in this compilation is as varied and the musicians as spread out as the gypsies themselves. The four tracks from the Hungarian groups stands out the most because they have a haunting sadness to them interceded with hallow drums and passionate guitars. Track 5 from France is playful while Coco Brival's "Le Yeux Noirs" reminds one of the style the Gypsy Kings have made familiar throuthout the world. For me the song that stays with me the most is "Codru." It is full of sorrow in a romantic sort of way. It is the way I typically romanticize the lives of Gypsies, that's why it is my favorite. Over all, this is a good compilation for people trying to investigate the flavor of European gypsy music. All the songs are wonderful to listen to. Some reviewers are already recommending other compilations and musicians to try. This is the great thing about Putumayo World Music, it serves as a window into other worlds that we can visit thru beautiful music.
dance like no one is watching.......2003-09-04
I don't often dance to music, preferring it to stay in the background as a pleasant voice as I get on with my daily chores or engage in my other hobbies. But with this CD I found myself dancing, swaying, and shaking as I worked in the garage or cooked in the kitchen, I even put a speaker in the backyard so I could dance as I picked veggies from the garden. This music filled me with joy and accented and at times overwhelmed my other hobbies. While the CD did lack a selection from the Romany indian roots, it did provide a wide range of Romany styles from the Hungarian to French to Spanish to the obscure Russo/Slavic Romany. I was also intrigued by this CD by its modern sound as tradtional Romany melodies were merged with progressive airs to show that this music is alive and growing and not a just an anthropological genre of folk songs. So if you want a sample of the roots of Gypsy Music and discover where it has been, Latcho Drom , or other fine CDs can help you, but if you want to Dance to the rythmns of where it is going then this CD is for you.

Pleasant but lacks bite, the Manteca compilation is better.......2003-07-26
Putumayo's compilation of gypsy music follows their usual vein of output: palatable introduction for neophytes, but not always the most inspiring or brilliant material. Nevertheless there are some gems on this CD that truly have the gypsy fire (Diri Diri So Kerdjan, Pena) but others are rather maudlin. I've travelled extensively through Eastern Europe and seen the gypsies in their natural habitat (brass bands in the Balkans, Budapest violin ensembles, Romanian tarafs) and I can assure you they sound spunkier and more soulful than some of these artists (who are a bit too polished). So buy the CD and get acquainted with the music, but remember this is a rather glossy take on the Rom culture. A much better compilation is Manteca's "From an early age: the incredible music of the gypsies" featuring giants such as Vera Bila, Esma Redzepova, Taraf de Haidouks, Muzsikas, Roomal, Fanfare Ciocarlia and a host of other luminaries. Also highly recommended is Saban Bajramovic's new album "Gypsy Legend" which is truly brilliant (he contributes probably the best track on this compilation, Pena).
Think of this compilation as the junior high school of gypsy music: important and providing the necessary foundations for further study, but by no means the apex of achievement.

These field recordings were made in 1969 and 1970, when there was still a united Yugoslavia. Yet the distinct cultural differences endured, at least as evidenced by the music in the excellent collection recorded by Wolf Dietrich. The music of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and the region of old Yugoslavia that included parts of historic Macedonia are all represented in this set. Most is very traditional music passed on via the oral history of the region from one generation to the next, and still pretty well preserved even as late as the '70s. Solo and group performances of vocal music are the highpoint of the recording, with solo and ensemble bagpipes also a major portion of the music here. Epic songs (one a singer accompanied by the unique fiddlelike gusle), folk tunes on frula (flutes), and numerous dance tunes by small ensembles fill out this remarkable set. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
The CD is authentic, has historical value..........2000-08-01
but I am writing this review in order to show my anger. I am a Bosnian refugee and it really offended me that a reviewer of this item wrote some mumbo-jumbo which is supposed to be Serbo-Croatian and adorned it with his death wishes for "Slavs". On the positive side, it is a proof of that person's (if he is a person) Neanderthal intelligence. Nevertheless it is racist and disgusting. PLEASE REMOVE IT.
GREAT MUSIC.......1999-06-17
An excellent collection of music. Exotic, beautiful and refreshing melodies which here in North America people don't have the chance to hear very often. Get it you will love it!

Customer Reviews:
A kaleidoscope of regions/styles.......2002-10-05
This CD has a broad range of musical styles from diverse regions of Europe and even from Rajasthan (India). It has a most impressive line up of famous musicians from Hungary: Roby Lakatos and Andras Farakas masters of the violin and Kalman Balogh a virtuoso on the cimbalom. Vera Bila and Kale hale from the Czech Republic, whose style has a South American or Mexican
quality. There is a Romanian village brass band and also a Macedonian one called Kocani Orkestar. The Bulgarian wedding music is played with great speed in the 7/8 rhythm --- stunning, astonishing sounds. The contrast and variety is amazing between regions such as Serbia's Saban Bajramovic who sings "Pena" about a girl he met who vanishes overnight like soapsuds ... and Esma Redzepova, Macedonia's "Queen of Gypsies" who provides unusual vocalizations which are characteristic of the pain and pleasures of gypsy life. Goran Bregovic wrote "Cuje Sukorije" for a young gypsy vocalist who sings in what sounds very much like "gypsy rap" music ...
Chrissoula Christopoulou (Greece) shows us the musical diversity of the Meditarranean region. There are musicians I have never heard before, such as Ibro Lolov (Bulgaria) and Fanfara Din Lozmesti (Romania) who have provide wonderful rhythms and musical creativity. Musafir (Rajasthan, India) creates a raw earthy sound, a bit more primitive and a great deal more passionate than their European counterparts. This CD includes traditional and village music as well as modern gypsy music written to appeal to a broader audience. Overall, if expanding your musical horizons to explore different styles of gypsy music is your goal, buy this CD. In short, it packs a lot of value for the buck! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

A little too Klezmer-ish.......2007-01-03
I bought this CD expecting to hear some old fashioned tamburitza style music, WRONG! This group of talented and accomplished musicians missed the boat on their interpretations of old Serbo-Croat songs. This CD sounds more like the Klezmer music at a Jewish wedding not traditional "narodna" style found throughout Ex-Yugoslavia. There is too much of screechy violin music remiiniscent of Hungarian czardas or Klezmer. Although very talented refugees make up this group, they should have stuck to the main theme of Serbo-Croat folk music.

Customer Reviews:
A look into the young Serbian soul........2006-06-14
Don't be worried by the description "Dance" music. You won't find any window-shattering, body-shaking beats on this compilation. Instead, hear what the artists have to say for themselves in this well-thought blend of Electronica/Trance. The last sentence on the back of the album describes their music as a "100% adrenaline-free collection of tunes from the place where apathy meets devastation..." This selection offers an inviting look into the young musical soul of Serbia. The trance-like sounds were better than I thought, and offered a richer mix of emotions than I had come to expect from modern 'Balkan' music. I only gave this a 4 because I had hoped to hear a few traditional Serbian sounds. This is definitely modern, definitely Euro - but definitely not Euro-trash!
Art of Belgrade's House.......2001-10-30
The citizens of Belgrade underwent a major change since the peaceful revolution of October 2000. As an reaction to the awful Serbian turbo-folk music and influenced by the UK and German techno culture; house and drummnbass suddenly became the most popular music in the town of Belgrade. Everywhere in the street it was to be heard; every richer club was inviting stars from the UK. This culture was expanded to the rest of Serbia through the 'EXIT - music festival' in July 2001. It was 9 days of drummnbass and house as well as some rock.
The 'radio utopia 4: The Belgrade coffee shop' (that is the original name of this masterwork) is a compilation of quiet unknown artists. It is a wild mixture of the influenced but still unique musical world of the house culture in Belgrade.
Do not miss it!

Great whether or not your'e familar with the style .......2007-02-03
I had a friend who worked at Tower (long, long ago my friends) and she gave me this CD (taken from the clearance bin no doubt) as a joke. It ended up being one of my favorite recordings of all time. I am not really familiar with this kind of music, it sort of sounded like a klezmer/mariachi band to me at first, combining the exuberance and passion of traditional eastern European music with the freewheeling yet precisely controlled brass you find in the best Mexican music. But truth is, it just plain rocks... I ended up loaning my old CD to a friend who, as it turned out, I never saw again. So, I am here getting "Blow 'Besir' Blow" a second time--its worth it.
Andrej.......2001-09-06
This album blew my mind. I recomend it highly to all lovers of Balkan music. I could just imagine my self sitting in a serbian 'kafana', sipping on 'sljivovica' and returning home early hours in the morning, being followed by a Gypsy brass band, waking up the neighbourhood. This kind of music just makes me want to get married or dance on the table!!! Now I know where Bregovic gets his ideas for music. Like I said, if you like Balkan music, this CD will grow on you the moment you play it...
Wild, exuberant, sexy and smooth!.......1999-09-24
Immediately evokes scenes form Kusturica's masterpiece "UNDERGROUND". As a matter of fact, this is the best substitute for the film's original soundtrack. The music is played with such abandon and gusto, that you can't simply stand still and not start dancing. Forget all the apprehentions you may have about brass music. This muisc Romska Orijentalna muzika(Oriental Rom(Gypsy) Music, and is exuberant, smooth and very sexy at the same time with almost a gliding undertone to it. "IZRAEL ORIJENT" is actually one of the wildest versions of "Hava Nagila" ever recorded. If you're a lover of the Balkan roma music, this is a must have!
This is the best Yugoslav Gypsy Brass music ever recorded!.......1999-01-09
After having listened to a great deal of Yugoslav brass music, I can only say that Blow Besir Blow captures the true essence of this wonderful music. Only being in a "Kafana" (bar) in Serbia drinking and dancing to live gypsy musicians tops this album. A must have for anyone from Yugoslavia or a fan of gypsy music!

It is the highly talented artists on this CD which got my attention: Esma, Macedonian Queen of Gypsies & Saban Bajramovic the world-famous gypsy vocalist from Serbia, plus the group known as "Mostar Sevdah Reunion". These musicians and singers gathered together during the war in Bosnia & Hezegovina to create a sense of hope and life, when just the opposite was occuring in their homeland. Another world-reknown vocal talent on this CD hails from the Balkans, Yanka Rupkina. She was a member of the "Mysterious Voices of Bulgaria" female chorus.
Music from Peru, Argentina, Surinam, and Portugal is also found on this eclectic album. I like all the music but it was the Balkan artists who were the main draw ... This compilation definitely influenced me to buy more CDs by these highly talented musical & vocal artists.
If you are interested in listening to "music of the world" but unsure whether you will like it. Your best option is finding a low-cost CD like this one to hear different musical styles. This CD by Times Square is one of the best compliations which meets this criteria. Few will regret spending their money once they hear the music ... Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Yanka Rupkina's voice is hypnotic.......2001-12-25
I have only heard one song from this album. Last night I was listening to the radio and stopped working to hear Bulgarian, Yanka Rupkina's beautiful, manly voice sing "It's raining hard outside".
