The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Suprise!.......2007-01-25
Having just gotten into collecting world music rather than just listening to it on the radio....I am more than pleased with my latest acquisition of Coffee Lands music. The music on this CD is totally mellow. Every song on it is a keeper. If you want something different, this is a CD to consider.
How can you have this CD w/o an Ethiopian contribution.......2007-01-14
Am I missing something? This CD does not have any Ethiopian music? I'm a bit perplexed by that seeing as coffee originated in Ethiopia.
Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf.......2006-06-15
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.
I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.
Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.
When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.
Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito.............2005-08-05
Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!
One of the best world music compilataions I've heard.......2004-01-25
Amazing collection of songs - not one is a throwaway. If you're looking to break into "world music" the Putumayo collections are a great starting point.

Folk Music of Peru.......2006-08-12
The CD case was damaged in transit. The CD itself was intact and fully functional. The sound quality was good, and the sound tracks were as specified.
Best Andean CD I've heard........2004-02-18
Too much of the Andean pipe music I've heard sounds like New Age rather than Peruvian Folk music. Either that, or it's a weak "South American" remake of easy listening standards on non-traditional instruments, with a pipe or two thrown in for flavor. Not so with these guys! This is truly original Andean Folk, by three very talented brothers (plus a spouse). It's lively, yet haunting, and I highly recommend it.

Product Description
At last, a recording that showcases the great regional diversity of folk violin styles from Peru. This new CD features music from Andean villages and coastal valleys, as well as the Amazon rainforest, played on traditional violin, harp, mandolin, charango, pampapiano, waqrapuku, antara, kena, pinkullo, and tijeras, among others. The 20-page booklet that accompanies the CD contains lyrics, translations, explanatory notes, violin tunings, instrumental configurations, and the history of the violin in Peru, beginning with the arrival of the rabel - a precursor of the violin - in the 16th century.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Andean music in violin.......2007-05-08
I am mesmerized that this CD of violin Andean music is available to the wide audience. Up until recently, this music was something that you could only hear at the patron saint celebrations of remote villages of Peru and Bolivia and that sort of place. I'm sure that many people have never heard Andean music in this form, played with such delicacy and feeling. I am so pleased that this beautiful genre is being preserved and spread for people to enjoy. This CD is sure hit a cord with anyone who has the sightless familiarity or inclination for the music of South America.
An amazing experience.......2007-03-06
Zamalloa has combed the Peruvian Andes long and hard to find these pieces. The results are extraordinary. Here is a cross-section of the many kinds of Andean music, played with refinement and a tremendous sense of musicality. Most Andean Peruvian music recordings tend to stay within a very narrow range. This CD is the exact opposite. All the pieces, however, manage to produce a wonderful mosaic, as pleasing to the ear as it is instructive. What an amazing gift.

Single label compilations can often be a boring exercise in marketing, but not so here. This is a thoughtful collection of evocative tracks from the Music of the World catalogue and it works very well as its own entity. Invocations' worldwide viewpoint includes a Kiowa hymn, indigenous and Hispanic music from Peru, the spiritually rich mbira music of Zimbabwe, and Iranian poetic songs. The artists' roster includes well-known names like Cornel Pewewardy, K. Subramaniam, Trichy Sankaran, Hassan Hakmoun, Dumi Maraire, and Ephat Mujuru; but it's the surprise of the unknowns that makes this album particularly interesting. Church bells in Peru, the Alliance West Singers, and Jalal & Soheil Zolfonum offer new sounds. This is a well-sequenced collection of ecstatic high points and subtle, spiritual lows. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Invoking God through music from around the world..........2002-07-04
This is a great collection that shows how different cultures sing to God and Invoke the Divine in their own unique way. African drumming, South American pan pipes, Hindu song, Native American chanting, and much more. Very uplifting and enjoyable.
Invocations.......2000-01-18
This album is a great collection of tracks that truly get you in the mood to have an elevated frame of mind. They are great for doing yoga to etc. I am an aficionado of musical traditions from around the world and in almost all cases found this compilation's selections to both be authentic and fun to listen to. I usually do not recommend compilations of any sort as they tend to use either very poppy or "cheap tracks" but this compilation shows thought and understanding of the musical traditions it represents.
