It's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars HOW DO YOU SAY,"WOW," IN ITALIAN?.......2007-06-22

BEFORE I START, LET ME SAY, THAT I AM A DANCE CLUB GUY AND THAT, ORDINARILY, THIS IS NOT MY KIND OF MUSIC. OF COURSE, I LAUGH AS I SAY THAT, AS, APPARENTLY, A NEW DOOR HAS OPENED IN MY LIFE, THANKS TO THIS MAN.
A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD HEARD ANDREA DO, "CON TE PARTIRO," ON A PBS SPECIAL AND MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS THAT ANY HUMAN COULD MAKE SUCH SOUNDS. I WAS ASTOUNDED; MORE ASTOUNDING, STILL, WAS TO HEAR THIS ALBUM AND FIND THAT HIS VOICE HAD ACTUALLY VASTLY IMPOVED OVER TIME. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? " CON TE..," PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE QUALITY OF THIS WORK; THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE PERFECT, FULL, RICH, AND MORE MOVING THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE HAD IT A WEEK, NOW, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE FOR VERY LONG, AND I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER. IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LIKE THIS BY ANY VOCAL CD. IF HE NEVER RECORDED AGAIN HE WOULD HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE WORLD OF AUDIO NEVER TO BE ERASED OR FORGOTTEN. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT SONGS! THE CUT, "LIBERTA," ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME WITH FEELINGS OF JOY AND MARVEL. I HAVE EVEN TAKEN UP STUDYING ITALIAN BECAUSE OF IT.
TREAT YOURSELF, AND A GOOD FRIEND, TO THE SOUNDS ON THIS CD. SIT AND WATCH A SUNSET WITH IT ON... I MEAN NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it........2007-05-30

If you like soft music that make's you feel up beat, just order a Andrea Bocelli CD. Listening to his CD's after being at work all day, is like having an option in life to hear and be somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Teamo, Andrea Bocelli .......2007-03-08

One of his best. Need the lyrics translated from the Italian to the English inside the casing next time. Nonetheless, Mr. Bocelli has a beautiful voice. It made my wife and all my female co-workers swoon when they listened to it.

4 out of 5 stars A new style from Andrea........2007-02-24

There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite. It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.

So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.

1 out of 5 stars Not happy with delivery (or non delivery) of this item.......2007-01-16

When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Mid-80's Album.......2006-11-10

Buffett goes back to writing all of the songs on this album except one, and for the most part it works well. After dabbling with country on the "Riddles In The Sand" album, Buffett moves back away from it with the exception of two tracks on "Mango". "Please Bypass This Heart" is nothing spectacular, but the other country oriented tune on the album turns out to be one of it's best with "If The Phone Doesn't Ring, It's Me". I believe it has been covered by several country artists over the years and is a really great song (this is coming from a guy who does not like country music). Other highlights on the album include "Frank And Lola" a hilarious character study of a middle age couple trying to re-kindle a spark in their relationship on vacation in Florida. "Desperation Samba" is another great Buffett "south of the border" tune. The title track "Last Mango In Paris" is classic Buffett. The album closer "Beyond The End" is a song a lot of Buffett fans don't seem to care for, but I think it makes a nice grandiose close to the disc. The album also includes several of Buffett's popular concert favorites "Jolly Mon" and "Gypsies In The Palace". Some of the production on this album is very 80's oriented which dates it a bit, but overall this is another good album from Jimmy.

5 out of 5 stars Brings me back to 1985........2006-04-01

This album was released in the spring of 1985. It was during the whole "Miami Vice" thing that was happening. Everyone wanted to live in Florida and dress like Don Johnson. Jimmy Buffett could have easily cashed in on that trend but instead went in his own direction. This is more of a country album mixed in with a carribean sound. It simply is an execellent album minus the final track "Beyond the end" which sounds more like a throwaway that they needed for filler. But the rest of the album is a wonderful collection of songs that are true Buffett. I enjoy this album for my own personal reasons because it takes me back to the summer of 1985 when I was 18 years old. Perhaps this album can take you back too. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2004-04-27

I'm an obsessive parrothead. And I LOVED some of the songs on this one--title track, Desperation Samba, Jolly Mon Sing. But the rest...the 80's were not kind to everyone's favorite pirate, honestly. He tried to be country, but his fans don't want a cowboy. We want the son of a son of a sailor.

2 out of 5 stars not one of JB's best.......2003-12-31

I am a huge Jimmy Buffett fan and I love just about all of his albums, this is not one of them. Frank and Lola, Gypsies in the Palace, and Last Mango in Paris are the strong points of this album. The rest of the album is dull and boring. The last song on this album, "Beyond the End" should have been name "Over the Top". This song is probably the worst most boring, dull, and unimaginative song Jimmy ever wrote. I do not reccomend this album.

5 out of 5 stars I like to smile............2002-10-12

So I love to listen to Jimmy Buffett.

I have been a Parrothead long before there was a name for us.

My favorite cuts from this CD are: FRANK AND LOLA; GYPSIES IN THE PALACE (great on this, but greater in person); and THE JOLLYMON SONG.

Buffett is a gifted storyteller....and sometimes you have to listen a few times to 'get what he's telling you,' but once you do, you're hooked.

I've always wondered why JB isn't a superstar....his musicality is right on...his songs tell great stories...and his shows are the most phun you will ever have legal.

Maybe it's just as well....if the masses all of a sudden discovered him, we Parrotheads will have to share him.

Not a good idea.

Enjoy this and all JB's work!

This self-titled debut is an amazing collection, spotlighting the Malian guitarist in his full solo acoustic glory for a beautiful, intimate music that recalls American blues. The beauty of Ali Farka Toure lives in Toure's light, nimble touch on the strings as well as his flexible, reedy voice, which both perfectly complement his gentle, ambling rhythmic style. Tastier highlights include the cantering "Tchigi Fo," with haunting call-and-response sung in Songhai, and the oddly pastoral "Kadi Kadi," a sweet folk song about an encounter with a young woman and her gift of a gold chain. The Arabic praise song "Bakoye" is a comely love song that pulses with Ali's low, bubbling fingerpicking over which his voice soars in a lovely bucolic melody. "Amandrai," in both a studio and live version, is the kind of bluesy tune that's made Toure famous and earned him comparisons to Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker. And in later releases, we indeed witness the Malian master collaborating with such Western artists as the Chieftains and Taj Mahal, but this loner of a debut features the guitarist's talents in a quietly understated, purely African light. --Karen Karleski

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Totally amazingopolis.......2005-08-06

This bad boy rocks the party, not in a violent, infantile way, but in a gentle, solicitous, cradle swaying manner. Not that the party would then fall asleep or anything, such kind of lie restfully, enraptured, dreaming lucid dreams staring at the ceiling. Guitarisms are sublime throughout, sounding incredibly full for such sparse arrangements. His best in my opinion, and who would contradict me?

5 out of 5 stars Mr Toure At His Best!.......2003-12-20

I've owned the CD for nine years, and it has always stayed close to me. This is to my mind the best album available of Toure's music. As stated in the editorial review, it is bare bones acoustic. Ali's voice and guitar cut straight to the soul. He is accompanied by sparse but tasteful percussion.

I recommend this above the Talking Timbuktu album. It is a classic that belongs in every collection.

5 out of 5 stars A mellow gem.......2003-12-09

This is an excellent collection of mellow African blues, nothing is too complicated in this music - really simple, organic sounds with beautiful rythems and wonderful guitar playing.I would recommend Toure to any serious music fan, and this is my personal favourite out of all his albums.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Talking Timbuktu.......2003-07-11

Ali Farka Toure best remains Talking Timbuktu, but this one is definitely worth having.

For some reason, A.F.T. is flacked as if his music is the source of the blues. Talk to any bluesmen who have gone to Africa, such as Buddy Guy. It ain't.

There is a lot of conning going on. A.F.T. learned the blues the same way Eric Clapton did.

I hope this inspires listeners to read ethnomusicologists research on the origin of the blues.

5 out of 5 stars Another Farka gem.......2003-01-20

Everything Ali Farka Toure recorded is great. His voice and guitar are one of the things we are lucky to have the oppurtunity to hear.
This cd is in a tradirional mold, close Radio Mali and to the second part of The River. If you like Malian music or the blues, you will love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2001-06-03

I have been following Angelique Kidjo since the release of this album. I have all her albums and still like this one the best. The energy in this release is incredible. Angelique's powerful vocals are something which set her apart from most other signers. She is touring the US this year (2001) - I'm planning to catch her at the Hollywood Bowl in mid August. She is a great performer so try to see her while on tour.

5 out of 5 stars African House or something like that.......2001-05-10

A nice blend of African grooves, pop and a taste of house with Fon and Yoruba lyrics. This should set a trend???

5 out of 5 stars DANCE TO ANGELIQUE.......2000-07-03

This is the 4th album of the petite Beninois singer an it transcends the category "world music" since all the fast numbers could fit easily snugly in the dance music genre, thanks mainly to the slick production of Joe Galdo who also twiddled the knobs for Gloria Estefan's Miami Sound Machine. The result is a vibrant clubland mix of reggae, funk and African Beat with rattling, percolating percussion above which her highly distinctive voice soars and swirls. Most of the racks ere co-composed by Kidjo and her husband, the bassist Jean Hebrail. "Batonga", the opener is a foot-tapping dance track whilst the tender ballad "Logozo" gives her voice the chance to shine in all its glory. Accompanied by acoustic guitar, her voice also impresses highly on Miriam Makeba's "Malaika." A remix of the title track of her 1985 album "Ewa Ka Djo" is another floor-filler, as are the reggae-tinged "Kaleta"(lovely synth melody) and the complex "Eledjire" with its Nigerian polyrhythms. Angelique sings in French, Yoruba, Fon, Mina and Swahili and is assisted by Branford Marsalis and Manu Dibango on sax and Ray Lema on background vocals. Forget about techno, dance to this!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you.......2000-06-02

Batonga was the first international song that got me hooked to all international music...because of this song I have since expanding my foreign music collection a lot...Logozo is very soothing and all songs give you feeling of present-day Africa.

5 out of 5 stars funky pop!.......1998-06-28

i saw angelique perform when i was in the ivory coast in 1992...she was fantastic and i have enjoyed this album immensely. it is a blast of catchy pop tunes along with folk-sy melodies. i highly recommend it to all who are looking for a strong female vocalist with a groove and an attitude.

4 out of 5 stars good, though not stellar, compilation.......2000-09-20

As much as I love Chaka, (I have been spinning his records for a good 6 years now) I was somewhat let down by this lp. Chaka and Pliers have a wonderful gift- that of their own songwriting skills- and while this is a compilation lp, I think they did too many covers on this lp.

I have spun their cover of Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove" before at clubs, and its a tasty cover, but they overdo the covers after that. Their covers of the Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout" and the Beatles "I Wanna Be Your Man," as well as the rock standard "Roadrunner" are fine in small doses, but in the end a tad lackluster and disappointing.

Their own tracks, including the great "Tease Me," and their debut track, "Gal Wine," better showcase their skills..and who can leave out the immortal "Murder She Wrote," Pliers' shining moment! These tracks prove their talents beyond a shadow of a doubt.

For their own tracks, I gave this compilation a better rating than I planned to, but I love and respect them, and that should count for something.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for summer driving.......2000-02-25

I have absolutely totally worn out my audio tape version of this CD. Totally perfect for blasting in your car for all those summer road trips. Believe me , many a time I have pulled up to stop lights to see people in the car next to me jamming along with the music. Long live Chakademus and Pliers.

4 out of 5 stars A sample of reggae around the world.......1999-12-22

Chaka Demus and Pliers simply put, have their own style. On this album, especially the "murder she wrote" song has the reggae beat mostly found in Central American countries like Panama and Honduras...almost unheard of in the western countries. "Gal Wine" give that typical reggae offbeat. "Tease me" is very interesting, because the reggae seems to flow with their singing as opposed to the background music. There is a great cover of "Twist and Shout" and how the Beatles may have done it say if they were from the islands. Give this album a try. I suggest it simply because it's off the beaten track.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......1999-10-15

Definitely the best from chaka demus and pliers if you like reggea you'll love this.

Jamaican filmmaker Perry Henzell made reggae an integral player in his gritty 1973 saga of a renegade Kingston singer who becomes a modern Robin Hood, casting one of the style's earliest stars, Jimmy Cliff, in the lead, and filling this soundtrack with classics from Toots & The Maytals ("Pressure Drop," "Sweet and Dandy"), Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town"), The Melodians ("Rivers of Babylon"), and the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad"). Cliff himself gets pole position, however, getting in the first ("You Can Get It If You Really Want") and last ("The Harder They Come") words in this first-rate reggae primer, which also features Cliff's enduring "Many Rivers to Cross." --Sam Sutherland

didn't think it could be done. this is great. this does jimmy cliff proud.

5 out of 5 stars The best from Jamaica...and Alabama.......2007-03-17

Still the best classic reggae collection, although as one other reviewer noted, some tracks do sound "Americanized." No surprise. "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Sitting in Limbo" were recorded with the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section in Alabama. This wasn't documented at the time (I learned it when I interviewed the MSRS in 1979) because apparently Cliff did not have the proper immigration papers to "work" in the USA when Chris Blackwell decided to bring him up for the quick sessions.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite albums of all-time........2007-02-13

this album holds its own against the very greatest albums of any genre. even if you are not a fan of reggae, i can't imagine you not loving this cd. there is so much joy, energy, passion and soul bursting from this music that it uplifts me each time i hear it, still fresh sounding to the ears 22 years after first finding it. jimmy cliff's vocals, in particular, are amazing. the songs which he performs on this album, "you can get it if you really want," "many rivers to cross," "the harder they come," and "sitting in limbo," are amongst the finest in the whole canon of reggae. each tune included here is a gem. don't let life go by without having this music in it.

3 out of 5 stars Not as reggae as I wanted.......2007-01-16

I am a bit disappointed in the CD. It doesn't seem to be REAL reggae as I think of it. It seems more like Americanized reggae. Maybe I just need to get a Marley CD. 'You Can Get It If You Really Want' sounds like a song from Sesame Street.

Kidjo takes further strides from African tradition to western soul-pop with the star-studded, 10-track Fifa. The diminutive diva from Benin with the big voice may offend some with her perceived "sellout," but she answers in turn that western pop is a worldwide phenomenon--and she is not afraid to assimilate it into her own music. With stars like Ray Lema and Jacob Desvarieux backing her up, Kidjo determinedly goes where she wants. Underneath the glossy beats of tracks like "Wombo Lombo," "Welcome," and "Koro Koro" lies a canny use of traditional structures and motifs. Kidjo can also handle pure African ballads like "Naima" (with guitar work from Carlos Santana), but her ability to marry music forms has hindered the efforts of the marketing folks, confused by an artist with feet so firmly planted on both sides of the aisle. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Kidjo is the new Grace Jones?.......2001-05-10

Grace Jones in style but holding down her own in an African cultural flavor. The tracks where the percusion is heavy and the lyrics are chanty and rhythmic are the standouts. Her voice is soothing to listen to in the melodic Fon & Yoruba languages...

5 out of 5 stars Consistently Strong.......1999-06-10

After several listenings, this CD has keeps growing on me. There are several songs here that exude emotion and sensibility. This is one talented lady and deserves all the attention she gets in the US. This album, no doubt, will be considered a classic. (5 Stars)

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Piece of Music.......1999-01-18

Angelique Kidjo has succeeded in giving African Music a definite European feeling, she has re-inforced my belief that African Music is a Universal one. This is a good one coming from her, she should keep the flag flying.

Cuba's timba musicians create a hard-edged dance music filled with energy, drawing upon jazz, funk, European classical, reggae, and myriad traditional Cuban rhythms. The music has a more global flair to it than some of the older styles, but timba is still wholly Cuban. Starting out as a Miami-based group of Cuban expatriate musician who played in other bands (Albita, Arturo Sandoval, NG La Banda and others), Tiempo Libre got serious when it was offered a slot opening for the legendary Celia Cruz and hasn't looked back since. The septet gets a surprisingly big sound driven by the traditional twin engines of sizzling brass and unrelenting rhythms. Most of the tunes on this too-short 40-minute debut are originals that offer the musicians' own take on their new home fused with the music they love. Indeed, while so many other Cuban exports are looking to the past, here's a band that's proudly in the here and now. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Tiempo Libre.......2007-01-11

This is THE HOTTEST Cuban group to come to us in 40 years. Their energy and musicianship excells anything else out there today. This music will move you.

5 out of 5 stars Great album, but kind of short.......2006-02-27

3 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2006-02-18

It cannot get hotter than this! I write about Irish music for a living. What an alternative!! These guys are stunning. I don't know a lot about this music. But I do what gets me dancing in my office! This is just perfect!! Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Timba: La vida misma!!!.......2005-12-12

Finally a US Timba band capable to groove like those in Havana. I grew up dancing Timba in Cuba and this band makes me feel like if I was there all over again. Once you get Timba in your system every other rhythm takes a second place.
A LATIN GRAMMY nomination for this band speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Follow up to my previous favorite - Buena Vista Soc. Clb.......2005-07-19

don't know that much about Cuban music - just know I've loved Buena Vista Social club since that album came out. I never believed anything could top that. But now that I've listened to ths album by these young Miami-based Cubans, I've fallen in love with Cuban music all over again. A perfect album to perk you up on even the bluest of days. These guys have a pipleline into some pure sense of musical joy that most musicians just dream of.
