Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Carmen Jones is one of the weirdest projects to ever hit the American musical theater. In 1943, lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II adapted Georges Bizet's Carmen for Broadway. The music was pretty much left intact, but Hammerstein transferred the action to WWII America. Carmen's tobacco factory became Carmen Jones' parachute factory, bullfighter Escamillo became boxer Husky Miller, and so on. As if this weren't enough, there also was the "small" detail of casting the show only with African-Americans. All in all, this ambitious endeavor makes Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme seem timid. Hammerstein's attempt at writing "black" hasn't aged all that well, but many of the show's songs retain a surprising impact. The feverish intensity of "Beat Out dat Rhythm on a Drum," for instance, hasn't dimmed over the years, and the song's been covered by a wide variety of performers, from Pearl Bailey and Marc Almond to Mandy Patinkin. The track is reprised as a bonus track at the end of the CD in a version sung by Kitty Carlisle (who's rather stiff compared to the show's June Hawkins). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars A Contemporary Adaptation of Carmen.......2003-12-02

You may know that the smash grunge musical RENT is based on Puccini's opera LA BOHEME. And MISS SAIGON is MADAME BUTTERFLY, and trickiest of all AIDA is AIDA, but before all of those there was CARMEN JONES.

What makes CARMEN JONES different, however, is that it uses Bizet's original music, though it changes the setting and the lyrics (they're in English, too, rather than the original French). And who would have done such a thing? Oscar Hammerstein II (as in Rodgers & Hammerstein, I know you've heard of them. If not, shame on you, go straight to OKLAHOMA, do not pass go, do not collect CD of CARMEN JONES). This is one of Hammerstein's earlier works, and it's a great show. (There's a very successful movie version available on video, if you want to see it.)

CARMEN JONES updates the story of CARMEN. The original plot took place in Spain in 1820, Carmen was a gypsy. The first performance of CARMEN was in Paris in 1875. (Wow! Over 125 years, and it still plays regularly all over the world, talk about a great run!) What Hammerstein did was akin to what our current composers are doing with shows like RENT. He updated the show for his audience. Instead of Spaniards and gypsies, he used African-American factory workers, and set the story in 1943 during the war in a Southern town.

The story makes this a darker musical than Hammerstein's later shows like OKLAHOMA, CAROUSEL, THE KING AND I and SOUTH PACIFIC, some of which had their heavier elements, but were focused more on the romance. The tone of CARMEN JONES is more akin to his first show (the first musical) SHOWBOAT. It is also unusual not just for it's time but in general that it had an entirely African-American cast. While recent shows like Disney's THE LION KING and ONCE ON THIS ISLAND have also had predominantly African/African-American casts, these shows are few and far between. Another comparable show in terms of music and style would perhaps be Gershwin's PORGY AND BESS, though it's considered an opera rather than a musical.

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is how CARMEN JONES should sound like!.......2003-02-26

Words cannot begin to sum up my joy that Decca Broadway finally deemed CARMEN JONES fit for a proper remaster. Oscar Hammerstein's lyrics set to Georges Bizet's classic score can now be heard clearly without distortion and this CD includes a complete plot synopsis and pictures. Now we no longer have to settle for that monstroscity from Pearl CD, which was an unauthorized recording, and I hope didn't take away too many sales from Decca Broadway. For musical buffs this CD is a must-have!

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE!!! Unauthorized recording! Poorly mastered!.......2003-02-26

I will get straight to the point: The CD is a poorly mastered, unauthorized recording of the original Carmen Jones cast recording using ancient recordings of the original 78 records. Pearl Records did not, repeat DID NOT receive Decca Broadway's permission to make this recording. However, Decca Broadway DID remaster FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTERS OF "CARMEN JONES" which sounds 100 times better than this thing and includes liner notes and pictures! Purchase the Decca Broadway recording instead. Frankly, this recording should rot!

    4 out of 5 stars A Unique Blend!.......2001-07-03

This soundtrack is a unique blend of vocals and brilliant instrumentals. While the songs aren't great, the performance is really wonderful!

    5 out of 5 stars a sweet find.......2002-09-02

I picked this up as a cheap little cassette and it was a very pleasant surprise. Django is great, although not always front and center as I'd heard before. The rest of the players are excellent, but since I didn't get liner notes, not sure who they are. The horn solos/riffs in "Sweet Georgia Brown" alone are worth the price of the cd. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Oh wow.......2000-08-17

French gypsy guitarist Django influenced everyone from Willie Nelson to Merle Travis. Compare his solo on "Exactly Like You" with the cut on Willie Nelson's version (with Freddy Powers playing guitar) and your hair will stand on end. Or should.

4 out of 5 stars Vujicsics: Keeps Serbian Music Alive in Hungary.......2002-03-05

Vujicsics is indeed 100% Hungarian & they *do* play Serbian music! In fact, they have been playing this style of music since the mid-1970s, often with Marta Sebestyen as their female vocalist. It is a well known fact that Hungary lost 2/3 of its territory after World War I: some of which went to Serbia (far south & southwest). Serbian minorities have maintainted their ethnic & cultural traditions in many areas of Hungary without discrimination (surprise!! - unlike the Balkans).

Szentendre is a town near Budapest which holds a yearly music festival at which Vujicsics performs live. (By the way, there are several Orthodox churches in Szentendre.) This CD by Vujicsics is an excellent representation of their music: it is lively and authentic played on traditional Serbian instruments but it is one of their earlier recordings. A more recent CD is recommended, I don't recall its title but the first track is "Gajde Oro" and there is another excellent track that lasts over 7 minutes which is distinctly Macedonian with an improvisational clarinet solo that is out of this world! Find *that* one and buy it!!! Get this one, too (but the other is better) ... Erika Borsos (erikab93)

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-08-02

This CD is Croatian and Serbian music played by a wonderful Hungarian band that did an excelent job researching the music that they play on this CD. The music sounds just as it might if it was played in a Serbian or Croatian village back in the "good-ol-days." This is the kind of music that sits right at the center of your soul. I say again, beautiful!

3 out of 5 stars This is Serbian not Hugarian, music and language........1999-03-20

There is some mistake in a review for this CD. The music and language are Serbian, Yugoslavia. There is no chance that some Hungarian group recorded music from Yugoslavia. It's just an error in cataloging this CD.

If Django Reinhardt had left us nothing but these 48 tracks, his reputation as a genius of the guitar would still be secure. The first disc of this two-CD set focuses on the 1936 and 1937 recordings he made with his musical soulmate Stephane Grappelli and their group the Quintette of the Hot Club of France. These were not the first recordings the Qunitette made, but they were the best. Reinhardt's angular guitar solos and propulsive rhythms are perfectly balanced by the casual elegance of Grappelli's violin. On the second disc Reinhardt is heard in a variety of settings, including a solo performance of "Improvisation," a three-minute tour de force that guitarists have been mining for inspiration for decades; as a member of the Coleman Hawkins All-Star Jam Band; and as the guitarist for the jazz violin summit meeting between Grappelli, Eddie South, and Michel Warlop. This set comes with a 30-page booklet in French and English that includes many rare photos of Reinhardt. Crazy Rhythm is an excellent collection of tracks from Reinhardt's most creative period, and is a joy to listen to from start to finish. --Michael Simmons
