    Album Description

Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.

    Album Description

Sierra Maestra, Cuba's leading son group, who are largely responsible for the style's revival, present their personal account of the genre's development in Son: Soul Of A Nation. The bedrock of Cuban music, son has shaped much of twentieth-century Latin music, and this album, recorded in Havana, pays tribute to the great writers of the past, selecting lesser-known classics alongside legendary tunes. Charting son's development from the early days before horns were introduced, through the additions of trumpets, piano and big bands, to the original modern son sound, this album is a glorious tribute confirming the dictum that `Son is the soul of our nation'.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest NEW cd to feature traditional Cuban Son Montuno.......2005-10-21

Sierra Maestra is an exellent group, and this is by far thier greatest and jazziest cd, that is completely traditional Son Montuno's. Great album for dancing or listening, the jazz oriented exotic and spicy guitar solos are what really make thsi album cook, not to mention the soul stirring vocals, and horns. This album swings, and is the essence of Afro-Cuban jazz, and roots music of Cuba! An exellent cd!

5 out of 5 stars classic cuban violins and flutes.......2006-03-02

When I started collecting CDs back in 1991 or 1992, this was the first one I bought. Two worn out copies later, I still enjoy the music from one of the essential cuban orchestras of the 1950s. These guys are right up there with such notable popular artists of the time as Beny More, Arsenio Rodriguez and Perez Prado, and this collection has a great representation of their hits.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the ORIGINAL orquesta Aragon!.......2001-07-18

I've heard many recordings touted to be made by the Aragon, but that aren't. This one is THE REAL THING. Every song is the real (ORIGINAL) thing. I'll date myself when I say that I danced to the Aragon's music many times at the Habana Hilton, Caribe Salon, I think on Wednesdays. And, these are the songs I danced to, not those of others who try to pass themselves for our old favorite orchestra. Do buy it if you want to dance to the Aragon again -- even if the faster cha-cha-chas aren't your style anymore. There is "SILENCIO" among the pieces, slow and seductive. And, if you speak Spanish, those lyrics are fun. Listen to "SENOR JUEZ" carefully. Thanks, BMG, RCA, and Amazon for bringing us the Aragon greatness again!

5 out of 5 stars Finding an old friend.......2000-06-23

I used to teach dancing and used Orequesta Aragon to teach my pupils. My son found this precious album for me through your website. Cuban music of this caliber will always be in style.

5 out of 5 stars ORQUESTA ARAGON -"THAT CUBAN CHA-CHA-CHA.......2000-06-02

This old classic was re-issued by BMG/Tropical Series as one of its first "must do" projects. Just like RCA's, Beny More's "Magia Antillana", "That Cuban Cha-Cha-Cha" has raked in quite a bit for RCA Victor, including its current BMG administration. Included in this CD are some of the Orquesta Aragon's original cuban RCA Victor hit recordings, like "El Bodeguero" which sold well over the million mark, "El Organillero", "Al Vaiven De Mi Carreta", "Yo Tengo Una Mun~eca", "Silencio", "Sen~or Juez", "Los Fantasmas", "Sabrosona", "Calculadora", "Ay!Jose","Los Tin~osos" and "No Me Molesto". Because of RCA Victor's "limited editions policies", not more than three Orquesta Aragon albums, were issued during its RCA years. These recordings were so popular and are so valuable that all of them should've been issued in Lp's by RCA, but weren't, therefore depriving future generations of many of these afro-cuban music gems. Make no mistake the contents of this album are just a small sample of this great orchestra's 1950's repertoire. It is and always will be a valuable classic.

      5 out of 5 stars Original y espectacular.......2006-12-10

If you have any trouble jumpstarting the fun at your next party, throw on Llego... Van Van--or just about any other Los Van Van CD for that matter. This 15-piece ensemble is back celebrating its 30th anniversary of togetherness while packing another album with its signature high-energy Cuban salsa, mixing traditional Latin melodies into contemporary originals that wander into funk and jazz territory. Listeners can ever rely on Los Van Van for letting it all hang out in thriving timbales and percussion, blazing horn lines, flittering flute, and roaring vocals with infectious call-and-response chant. And this album is simply no exception. Leader Juan Formell puts forth such playful songs as "Temba, Tumba y Timba" and "Mi Chocolate" along with red-hot jams featuring luscious solos, as the piano, timbales, and trombone attest on "Consuelate Como Yo." There's also a glittering parade of singers here--including Roberto Hernandez, Mario Rivera, and Pedro Calvo--who seamlessly slide the mic back and forth to lead the rousing, throbbing festival, which, thankfully, lasts for a solid 60 minutes. --Karen Karleski

4 out of 5 stars Original Cuban Sound.......2004-03-10

If you really really like salsa, you have to listen to this band and this CD. Salsa bands have different sounds, and los Van Van have a special style that you can recognize even if you don't know who is singing. This music is a great example of the simplicity and happiness of the true Cuban people, without mentioning anything related to politics or hidden political messages. This is Cuba's and the Caribean's flavor. The cd transports you to the caribean, and you can get a taste of its people and its culture just by listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars The best Van Van album to date!.......2003-09-11

This Grammy-winner album is by far Van Van's best timba album to date. The quality of the recording is excellent and captures their strong sound as if playing live. Mayito, Guayacan, and Pedrito Calvo are at their best. This is also the last recording Cesar Pedroso made with Van Van before starting his own band. The lyrics and "coros" are solid through out the album. If you like Van Van this CD is money-back guaranteed. There was an issue with the record company not giving this album the exposure it deserved, being it a Grammy winner and all... heartbreaking as tracks #1 through #9 could all be hit singles. I'm a die-hard salsa fan (70s-80s-90s) and this was the first timba album I bought. I have a 600+ CD/LP salsa collection and must say that together with Adalberto Alvarez's "Jugando con Candela" and Manolito y su Trabuco's "Se Rompieron los Termometros" this CD is the best contemporary Cuban timba/salsa I own.

      5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2003-03-11

This is one of the best Salsa CD's out there. The quality of the recordings is great and all the songs are full of energy and charisma. For those who critize the lyrics, why don't you stop blabbering and just start dancing, and you'll see how every word fits perfectly when you dance to it. And don't forget, Van Van is band that plays for the dancer and any listener should have trouble staying still and wonder what the meaning behind the lyrics are(If you really want to waste your time interpreting lyrics, listening to Silvio Rodriguez). Van Van is for dancing, Van Van is to lighten up your day, Van Van is to sweat off those calories and flavor up your life. If you like to dance Salsa, this is a CD for you. If you like Van Van, this is their last masterpiece of the millenium, by far the best recording quality, the last CD with Pedro Calvo, and grammy winner of Best Salsa CD 1999.
      Therefore..........

Originating in the late 19th century in the island's countryside known as the Oriente Province, the dance rhythm known as the son is the bedrock of Cuban music. It's a mix of Spanish and African harmonic and rhythmic elements with congas, bongos, maracas, clave sticks, upright bass, and the double-stringed tres guitar comprising its core instrumentation, augmented by brass, flutes, and charanga violin sections. This enhanced CD with a bonus track is compiled by the folks who produce the famed Rough Guide travel books, and it unveils the myriad forms of this music from the '20s to today.

The group Sierra Maestra has bata drum power on the Afro-son "Chango Ta' Veni." The Afro-Cuban All-Stars--featuring artists of the Buena Vista Social Club--and trumpeter Jesus Alemany's supergroup, Cubanismo, exemplify the zesty descarga/Cuban jam session tradition on "Alto Songo and "Canto al Monte." Of course, the classic bands and singers such as the legendary Orquesta Aragón, Septeto Habanero, Beny Moré, and María Teresa Vera, are included. "Que Pisa," by the synth-syncopated pop band Los Van Van, and rural Familia Valera Miranda's soulful take on Compay Segundo's hit, "Chan Chan," represent the impressive range of this Latin American musical form. --Eugene Holley Jr.

      Album Description

Son is Cuba's principal dance and song form and the root of salsa. Fusing African and Spanish elements, it ranges in style from simple, rustic bands to the brassy arrangementsof New York salsa. This Rough Guide, literally a 'who's who' in Cuban music, explores this rich tradition, from its conception in the early 1900s to the present day big-band revival.

Artists include: Sierra Maestra, !Cubanismo!, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Orquesta Aragón, Familia Valera Miranda, Los Van Van, Sexteto Habanero and Beny Moré

      4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-03-17

excellent compilation of cuban music from rough guide. It is not just the Buena Vista Social club revisted. Some of the songs are the same but are done by differnt artists than BVSC. I think they are at least as good as the artists on BVSC.

      5 out of 5 stars A nice collection..........2003-06-18

I think this is pretty nice. Even if it isn't all "son" per se, (and "son" is a pretty fluid term, anyway...)this is still one of the better samplers of Cuban dance music you're likely to find on the American market, packed with solid performances by classic artists such as Beny More, Orquesta Aragon, Ignacio Pineiro, Nico Saquito and others. Although it includes a few tunes by slick modern groups such as Los Van Van, there's a perceptible tilt towards older, rootsier acoustic styles and artists that I find appealling. Sure, maybe all of the artists aren't brand-name, dyed-in-the-wool legends, but this is a very strong, no-nonsense sampler of some of the sweetest music Cuba has to offer, and one of my favorite Rough Guide discs to date. Definitely recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Vey rough guide.......2002-08-13

If one were to disregard the misnomer I think any fan of Cuban music will find this disc enjoyable but not great. It is after all the rough guide. Another problem with this disc besides the varieties of styles is the time periods covered, this makes for a bit of a mixed , uneven compilation. The featured artists are some of the best in Cuban music many of whom have been making music for decades and walking this planet longer than most people. Featured and diverse artists include Beny More, Orquestra Arragon, Sierra Maestra and the Afro-Cuban All Stars amongst many others who are lesser known outside of Cuba. All in all the songs are a niice sampler of Cuban music with several outstanding songs depending on ones preference. Myself I found the interpretation of Compay Segundos classic song "Chan Chan" by Familia Valera Miranda a little subdued and hence a little less soulful than the original but still good. All in all it is a nice sampler for further exploration into Cuban music. For variety and a way of hearing other artists it is useful but as pure son it falls short. It is an enhanced CD and this portion I found quite disappointing. It seems that the technology was not utiized to it's full potential and it is little more than reading material and an advertisement for the books and such that are associated with the rough guide series. The enhanced section is not very interactive and without sound, go figure.

2 out of 5 stars Misguided Cuban Potpourri.......2000-09-19

This CD is not a rough guide to son. Although the selections are in most cases good by themselves it includes guaracha (Nico Saquito), cha-cha-cha from Orquesta Aragon and timba from Los Van Van. In my opinion this is just another compilation intent on cashing in the "Buena Vista Social Club" phenomenon. The CD spans almost a century of Cuban music, from Maria Teresa Vera to Cubanismo, thus labelling "son" what really is a variety of forms and styles of Cuban music. Not for somebody seriously trying to learn about "son"

      5 out of 5 stars great music.......2005-10-18

This compilation provides 2 cds from their concert in Miami and a dvd of that concert. Everything is great, considering these are recordings from a live event.

If you are new to Los Van Van, this is a great introduction to their music and their personalities.

The dvd is ok, but sometimes it focuses too much on the audience rather than the band.

I love Los Van Van. However, this CD is a major diappointment. Poor singing combined with poor sound engineering translates into a strong recommendation not to spend your money on this CD. Do yourself a favor and pick another one ("En el malecón de La Habana" is one of my favorites and is guaranteed to get your feet moving).
