5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2006-02-17

I'm a big fan of Trio da Paz, and when I saw this album for the first time, I bought it immediately. Kenny Baron, is of course one of the all time great jazz pianists, and lends his musicianship wonderfully to the always great brazilian trio. The first cut of the album alone is worth the price of the whole thing. Buy this now if you love jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Just what you are looking for.......2004-09-05

There can never be enough Jobim redone if it is redone well. However, you may be thinking to yourself, a recent convert to Bossa Nova, as I was when I bought this CD, "What's new? Who is pushing the frontiers or at least doing something original?" If that is you, this is your CD. This CD is also for you if you are thinking, "Hmm, a reknowned jazz pianist tries a new genre...must be good." My favorite piece on the album is "Clouds." In general, the album remains one of my favorite in latin jazz. If you are a Trio da Paz fan, or Kenny Barron fan, everything you expect.

5 out of 5 stars Magical meeting of jazz giants.......2003-12-06

It is true that Kenny Barron is among the top echelon of modern jazz pianists. He was Stan Getz's last pianist, and the music they produced (People Time and The Lost Sessions: Bossas and Ballads) is among Getz's finest. He lead the band Sphere, a brilliant group interpreting and building on the music of Thelonius Sphere Monk (hence, the name). He came up playing With Dizzy Gillespie and Yusef Lateef. Yet, many of his efforts as leader seem to fall short, to lack something. Except when he places himself in a somewhat alien context, as on Swamp Sally, his brilliant disc with Mino Cinelu (country/blues/jazz), and here, matched with Trio da Paz (Brazilian). These encounters, where he is playing in the presence of a deeply established world jazz vibe, bring out the very best in him and enable his epic jazz pianism to shine brightest.

Trio da Paz benefits as well. Having a world class musician playing piano (an instrument not part of the trio) nudges them into a greater freedom of expression and rhythmic drive than I've heard from them before. Add Valtinho on percussion and Anne Drummond of flute, and you have a much richer sound signature than usual for a Trio da Paz disc.

The electricity sparks from the very first number, "Zumbi," a driving composition by Barron (5 of 8 are his, the rest, one each from the Trio). There's a very attractive controlled wildness here, reminiscent of some of Egberto Gismonti's early period music, just after he emerged from three years of studing the aboriginal music of Northern Brazil. That vibe continues with "Paraty," a number from bassist Nilson Matta that has almost become a Brazilian jazz standard and which features an astounding solo from Romero Lubambo, surely the reigning Brazilian guitar champ, as well as a very attractive solo from Barron. "Bachiao," from the pen of Lubambo, has a distinct Villa Lobos feel, and brings out perhaps the leader's finest piano work; indeed Barron's and Lumbabo's breakneck melodic doubling amazes. Drummond also knocks off a quite remarkable flute solo on this number. But my favorite is drummer Dudaka da Fonseca's "Dona Maria," also featured on his brilliant disc "Samba Jazz Fantasia," bursting with complex rhythms and an eminently hummable melody. Da Fonseca's drum solo is pure brilliance--tasty, alive with energy, and smartly succinct.

The ballads, "Clouds" and "Until Then," also stand out, providing a welcome change of pace from the uptempo numbers. Barron has always struck me as an accomplished ballad player, and he confirms that view by his performances here.

All in all, a great disc, one of the finest world jazz performances I've ever heard. Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars An ideal pairing.......2002-12-20

Kenny Barron is simply one of the finest pianists in jazz-- an opinion confirmed by his annual rankings at or near the top of the Downbeat Readers and Critics polls. This record pairs Barron with Brazilian musicians Trio de Paz, one of his students -- flutist Anne Drummond, and percussionist Valtinho.

Instead of rehashing the usual Jobim tunes, the record showcases new compositions by Barron and members of the Trio that are rhythmically exciting and offer plenty of space for soloing both on the record and in their live shows (don't miss them if they come your way).

Barron is as wonderful as always and the members of Trio de Paz make ideal partners -- especially guitarist Romero Lubambo.

5 out of 5 stars Varela At Her Best.......2005-03-05

During the last couple decades, Adriana Varela and Litto Nebbia have collaborated in bringing the tangos of old back to life. They have done albums with Roberto Goyeneche and more recently have taken to resurrecting the tangos of Enrique Cadicamo into the popular consciousness of their native Argentina.
I own several CDs that showcase the singing of Adriana Varela and so far, Tangos de Lengue is the best. Varela has that husky, besotted voice so suitable to tango which makes her the best female tango singer on the scene today. And along with Discepolo, Cadicamo is one of my favorite "guardia vieja" composers.
My favorites here are Anclao En Paris, Tango de Lengue, a tremendous rendition of the famous Los Mareados, Punto Alto, and Descarte. Among the musical luminaries who back her are Antonio Agri, Nestor Marconi, and the aforementioned Litto Nebbia.
If you are new to the heartfelt singing of Adriana Varela, then this CD is as good a place as any to start. My copy of the CD bears a different cover than the one illustrated above, but it is still from the same Argentine company Melopea. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Adriana's Gift.......2001-08-09

This CD is one of the most beautiful things to enter into our world. It is a gem that deserves a special place in one's music collection. I think that it was Keats who said that "a thing of beauty is a joy forever." This is the case with Cantata Cadicamo of Adriana Varela. Her smooth, deep and penetrating voice takes us into that realm of an almost oneiric Buenos Aires filled with characters that yearn, celebrate, love, and perish in the cadences of a language that only Tango could create, or recreate rather, for us to attain that "impossible memory" of which Borges so fondly wrote in his poem "The Tango." This CD is, literally, a harmony of caprices and whims that will fill with their voices spaces in your heart that not even you knew they were there. It truly is a pity that not many people know about this great Argentine singer, but this perhaps adds a charm to any buff's collection, as her music is definitely better enjoyed the way one enjoys certain lusts or sins: in the intimacy of one's soul.

5 out of 5 stars One of de best tango singer.......2001-07-27

Adriana Varela is whith Susana Rinaldi the best tango singer of our time. The problem is that we only found one o two albums.Rinaldi lives in France, then we can't know what she is recording. Varela is not well known yet, but y recomended to be alert. his style is the same of de great Polaco Goyeneche, then undoubtly she is great.

CONSIDERO QUE LOGRO CAPTAR EN SU ESCENCIA INTIMA LO QUE CADICAMO QUISO EXPRESAR CON UN TOQUE MUY PROFUNDO DE GOYENECHE. PLEASE, EDIT THIS CD AGAIN, I THINK NO PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WHO LOVES TANGO CAN MISS THIS WORK GUILLERMO J. MARTINEZ MD.

    - they were known as The Girls From Bahia when I was playing them on a jazz radio station some 35 or so years ago; unable to speak/sing in English, they sang phoenetically written lyrics -- and they KNOCKED ME OUT as they continue to do today. The only differences are that they were kids back then with the tightest harmonics -- and now (so MANY years later) they're probably grandmothers. Still love 'em!!! They'll often start a song in unison, then, POW ---- they split = super-tight. It ain't "jazz" per se, BUT, much like OsCariocas, dynamite.
When we return again to Rio, doubt if we'd go out of our way to catch them "live" if they were performing -- they seem more a studio group for records - - - but, truly, to my ears, they are magnificent!!

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars In Concert With The Sun, Moon, Stars And A Heavenly Choir, Everytime Someone Enjoys Symphonic Jobim, An Angel Gets His Wings!.......2007-06-21

Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

    Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.

Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!

    Thanks, Tom!

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.

3 out of 5 stars Great Artists, But Not Their Best Songs.......2004-03-28

For folks that are not familiar with Brazilian music and therefore looking for the stereotypical "Girl From Ipanema" bossa nova style of music, be aware that this is an album of MPB artists & songs (mostly from the 70's and early 80's). The reason why I only gave this album 3 stars is because I thought it didn't pick the best songs from each of the artists featured. The actual artists are all first class (Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Joyce, Gilberto Gil....just to name a few!), but this album didn't feature any of their greatest works. But on the other hand this album gives listeners who are unfamiliar with MPB a good introduction, which will hopefully lead to further interest in the wonderful world of classic MPB. For the best MPB album (in my opinion) check out the "Tropuque Samba Lounge" collections ("Beleza Pura" and "Emorio"). By the way I just can't help but put my two cents in. I couldn't agree more with "A Music Fan from Los Angeles, CA". The "Music Fan from New York City" really needs to get a clue. Duh!! Of course the people on this album didn't speak Spanish very well. That's because they are singing in Portuguese! Hello people. Brazilians are first of all not Hispanic, number two they speak Portuguese (once again - not Spanish , but Portuguese - Brazilian Portuguese to be exact), and number three Brazilian music sounds totally different from other Latin music.

3 out of 5 stars Not an actual review.......2002-06-16

This is not actually a review of the CD but rather info to "the brilliant human being" who mistook Portuguese for Spanish in his review of this CD, and ended up giving proof to the world of his "erudition". Brazilians speak Portuguese! This CD is in Portuguese!

1 out of 5 stars Stones and Beatles missing in action.......2002-05-30

...none of the songs on this album sound like Mick Jagger or Strawberry Fields Forever-era Beatles. I am very disapointed. I wanted to get my yah-yah's out or at least my yeah, yeah, yeah's. Instead I have a CD of people singing things I don't understand. They don't speak Spanish as well as me even though I took it in junior high school only. They pronounce things in a weird way, almost like they were from Portugal. Geez!

    5 out of 5 stars A fabulous Introduction.......1999-07-23

This is an excellent collection of Brazilian music with samples coming from some of the best CDs. I usually like only one or two songs from a CD but this is one of those where I like most everything. The music is different from song to song, very interesting and far more advanced than anything that Mick Jagger could possibly comprehend. They also give you the associated albums with each cut so for the uninitiated, you have the confidence of buying more CDs that have proven themselves with the public. One caution about his music. Brazil is a melting pot of Portuguese, African and native Indian. So the attitude is " anything goes." So you get constant suprises in the mixing of time signatures and seemingly incompatbile rhythms. At first, it might sound like Strawbery Fields Forever ( unstable, inconsistent rhythm ) but if you give it a chance, you realize that it takes you beyond the mundane and into the realm of high quality territory that is unprecedented here or any place else in the world. And you will begin to feel comfortable with it. So it give it a good chance. Please also read the words. The messages are very sophisticated and a reflection of the economic situation in Brazil coupled by the passionate easy-going personality that typifies the melting pot Brazilian persona. This CD is pure joy. I highly recommend it. It will make you feel happy.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent intro to some of Brazil's top pop singers.......1998-09-02

There are many compilations of Brazilian pop (MPB) for beginners in US record stores, ranging from downright awful to OK. This one has all the biggest names (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento)and better-than-average selections from each. It's important to know what you're getting: quality popular music from the 70s and 80s by the Brazilian equivalents of Barbara Streisand and James Taylor, not the latest Afro-Brazilian Axe dance bands or traditional folk music. A good intro to the Brazilian singers who have stood the test of time and are cultural icons across generations. If I had to choose between this album and the similar "Beleza Tropical" compiled by Gabriel Byrne, I'd choose this one.
