Born in 1918, Hank Jones grew up in a household with some serious musical talent. Jones' earliest influence was pianist Fats Waller. He also idolized Earl "Fatha" Hines and the great Teddy Wilson, but his greatest influence was the legendary Art Tatum. A consummate freelancer, Jones has worked with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Milt Jackson, and Julian Cannonball Adderly. His dynamic and diverse recordings reinterpret jazz in all of its varieties. The genetic makeup of sax and flute legend Frank Wess is pure jazz. Though best known for his years with Count Basie, he has also had stints with the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, Eddie Heywood, Lucky Millinder, and R&B star Bull Moose Jackson.

Dynamic Ageless Duo.......2007-03-27

Two of the great players together. I have seen these two on several occasions in NYC and they asre great players. Together this CD is a winner. I did have a problem with the CD itself--it wouldn't play! I returned it to Amazon and they replaced it and it still wouldn't play. I took it to two different neighbors and it played on both their machines. One of them burned me a copy off the original and I brought it home and o\it played. What's up with that? This has never happened in all the years I have been buying and playing CD form various companies, really confusing.

Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

I purchased this CD because i like Joe Newman. Was i surprized to find that, though Joe plays on 3 of the 7 tracks, he is only a small part of the talent that is on this CD. Frank Wess is a Fantastic performer as is Kenny Burrell whom are the main focal points of this CD. The pair play on every track and do so expertly, they seem to melt together in a swinging groove that is almost seemless. You can almost imagine Hugh Hefner entertaining guests as the group plays on in the backdrop. The mansion has never sounded so good. I especially enjoy the tunes that have drummer Ed Thigpen performing the driving and endlessly hip vamp.

Classic Harris.......2005-07-19

This is the artists that my family takes along on road trips. Now my children MUST have Gene Harris for the road. His interpretation and the "tags" on his selections are both driving and mellow. He's still hip with my 20 something kids!

There are few happier sounds in jazz than hearing pianist Gene Harris get into a soulful groove. Famous in the '60s for leading the "Three Sounds", Harris spent a period in the late '70s out of the limelight, returned as a member of the Ray Brown Trio and has been leading his own exciting groups since hooking up with Concord in the mid '80s. His joyous blend of jazz, soul, blues and groove music is impossible to dislike - or forget!

Opening track gives you behind-the-scenes-insight to this great jazz pianist - Harris is completely spellbinding with everything on the table, he shines brighter than any artist to sit at the keyboard. Playing from the heart - God-given-talent who just wants to make people happy.

With a collection of several hundred jazz CD's (and a good number of old records too), this is the best that I have come accross. It fits with any mood and adds to any environment.

hard to believe i am the first to review this album. this is a gem from the opening number summertime, certainly to some a hackney piece yet listen to this group groove. frank wess on flute and later on tenor sax joins in during this live performance. i recommend this album to anyone who enjoys good jazz piano with an ENSEMBLE and i have put ensemble in caps to emphasize their solid performance as a group. just buy this cd.

Three-way studio jamming session.......2003-09-05

Recorded days after the wonderful Blue Train album, this session brought together an unusual cast of players. John Coltrane, Paul Quinichette and Frank Wess on tenor saxophone (with Wess doubling on flute), Mal Waldron running the show on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums.

Probably the most interesting material on this album are the two takes of Waldron's "Wheelin'", a fast romp which provides a battleground for a three-way tenor tussle. Waldron takes an extended solo in his Monk-like awkward but bluesy style, which either does it for you or doesn't.

It's a shame this was released under Coltrane's/Wess' name since it's really Mal Waldron's set and material and probably not in the taste of most Trane lovers, but still worth checking out.

When this album was first released on LP, four years after it was recorded, Gene Ammons was in prison. Despite that fact it became a big hit for him. Frank Wess joined Gene on the frontline, playing tenor and flute, and organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith was also on the date. The title track, which is nearly 9 minutes long, has Gene developing his performance slowly but with great assurance; before he's done he's laid down one of his finest ballad solos on record. Other highlights include the medium-up swinger WATER JUG, and the medium blues GETTIN' AROUND, which has a real nice Wess flute solo. BLUE ROOM also finds Wess on flute and the Rogers & Hart tune gets a good reading here. Two tunes (TALK OF THE TOWN and YOU GO TO MY HEAD) were recorded in 1962 and have Mal Waldron on piano. This is a very solid album and Gene Ammons fans will not be disappointed.

A Nicely Groovin' '50s Organ Tenor Session !.......2001-06-06

Featuring the late great Johnny Hammond Smith on B-3, the deep soulful flute / organ mix on "Blue Room" inspired me so deeply, when I did my Rememering Eddie Jefferson session, one of my conditions of using James Spaulding on alto was that he bring his flute too... Though this CD obviously has plenty of organ/tenor stuff happening, its Johnny Hammond's screaming chords with that bluesy flute that gave me goose bumps. Don't expect a lot of wild far out soloing... expect the soulful, bluesy swinging feel of an era long gone... Of course, Gene Ammon's ability to swing like a you-know-what goes without saying. JHS also plays piano - - if you dig this vibe, check out JHS's Black Coffee or Arnett Cobb's Smooth Sailing or Blow By Blow.

The Title Cut is Worth the Price of the CD.......2001-01-04

Back in the sixties I had some college buddies who shared good jazz recordings with me. One such album was Angel Eyes. Gene Ammons lyrical and melodic saxaphone solos struck a chord with me and the title cut Angel Eyes conjures up haunting back ally scenes of beat despair and longing. In fact I heard this song in the early 70's in a New Orleans bar late at night and it soothed a worn out soul. The rest of the CD comes across as standard run of the mill jazz, tame when compared to the heights set by Miles, Roland Kirk, Coltrane and others of the time. But if you want that late night starry starry night feeling-"Angel Eyes" is worth the price of the CD.
