Another Story.......2006-05-14

Here is yet another incredible box set released by Bear Family. This is the later works of Ernest Tubb and the sound is superb. Not only does Bear Family provide 6 CD's of ET, but the usual, detailed, full-sized booklet covering the related discography and era of Tubb's career. While there are quite a few Ernest Tubb cover songs here, there are some real hidden gems here that you will not find anywhere else! This includes: a large selection of songs performed by Jack Greene and Cal Smith....not to mention some incredible instrumentals by the Troubadors. And, if that wasn't enough, There's a full library of duets of ET and Loretta Lynn......I can't recall ever seeing these numbers provided elsewhere. This Box set is worth every cent and is worthy of the highest praise. A++

Fabulous musique!.......2003-05-06

Ok, so there's A LOT of tambourine on this album - that's the bad news. The good news is, there's almost NO accordian. But seriously, anyone interested in rap, linguistic diversity, garlic, pastis, politics, Phrench Philology, and, yes, cool music, will LOVE this album.

It's about these two guys from Toulouse who beat out a hyper-rhythmical bed over which they rap (in French, of course) and squeak, pop, hiss, boom, and produce 1000s of other sounds. It helps if you speak French, but I've played this one to lots of people who don't, and the verdict has been unanimous - IT'S COOL!!!

The liner notes are a bit sketchy - you only get lyrics to about half of the songs, and there are (if you want to get nit-picky) about 3-4 numbers that are "filler" in my opinion. But overall, this is a very cool CD and well worth having.

The subtitle of volume 4 of Vanguard's Generations of Folk series is "The Troubadours," but here's an alternate suggestion: "Artists Who Didn't Fit on Any Other Anthology." This haphazardly compiled collection features the likes of Don McLean ("American Pie"), Cat Stevens ("Wild World"), Richie Havens ("Here Comes the Sun"), and Rick Nelson ("Garden Party"). Then there are middle-of-the-road types such as Stephen Bishop and Michael Johnson, the more left-field likes of Paul Kelly and Peter Case, and even a movie star (Keith Carradine) thrown in for good measure. The problem with this 12-track anthology is that there doesn't seem to be a unifying theme, unless guys with guitars qualifies. If you're dying to have several singer-songwriter hits on one disc, consider The Troubadours, but most folks are better advised to mosey on down the road and find themselves a more finely honed collection, such as one of Rhino's Troubadours of the Folk Era collections. --Steven Stolder

Not exactly the folk singers you think of as troubadors.......2004-01-27

Volume 4, "The Troubadors," is the weakest in the "Generations of Folk" series and the one that goes the farthest afield from the roots and essence of the American folk revival. For the holidays I was burning folk compilations for friends and family, and on this album there was only one song that I had included, which was Richie Haven's cover of George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun." Of course I have Don McLean's "American Pie," which I have to admit I had never really thought of as a folk song before, and Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party," which I always thought of as being a Country & Western song. The same goes for Keith Carradine's Oscar winning song "I'm Easy," from the film "Nashville." Those songs clearly point out the direction of this particular collection, which goes so far as to include Tim Buckley's "Sing a Song for You," which is basically a folk-jazz song. But Stephen Bishop's "On and On" is really just soft rock.

Beyond those hits there are a lot of songs that I am not sure that I had ever heard before: Peter Case's "Let Me Fall," Joshua Kadison's "Beautiful in My Eyes," Micheal Johnson's "Bluer Than Blue," John Jennings' "Walking to China," and Paul Kelly's "Deeper Water." These are all decent songs, but when you suggest troubadors and the topic is folk music I immediately think of Woody Guthrie and then we are talking Pete Seeger. Nobody else on this collection would even have been included on my short list, so that tended to put these songs in a lesser light just for that reason. But this one also falls short on the standard test for song collections, which is that you can five songs you do not have worth the adding. The main reason to pick up this one is because you already have the other three volumes of the "Generations of Folk" series.

The best box set of ET!.......2005-02-24

This box set is one of the most greatest sets I have ever owned by the legendary ET and I highly recommend this for every fan of the Texas Troobadoor! This set features his 8 year recording career at Decka from 1966-1975 and the highlight of this set is the classic Another Story, Another Time, Another Place which is the title of the set. His duets with Loretta Lynn are really masterpieces especially my favorite, Sweet Thang. Also Tubb's version of Faron Young's She Went A Little Bit Farther is amazing plus his Merle Haggard songs such as the Bottle Let Me Down and Sing Me Back Home! Words can't express how much I am enjoying this great set and I am so pleased to have every Bear box set by ET's entire recording career from 1936-1975. By the way who is that singer singing songs such as Gone, etc? It can't be Jack Greene or Cal Smith could it? I know that on the set Waltz Across Texas there are quite a few songs which feature these two singers and a bunch of instrumentals by the Troobadoors which are outstanding! In my opinion Ernest sounded great in the 60's and 70's when he had members such as Cal, Jack, Leon Roads, Buddy Charlton, etc. So sit back, relax and enjoy listening to ET! Play it pretty, Leon!

Ted Roddy is one of Texas' best-kept secrets. Performing since the 1970's, he has worked with artists as diverse as Jello Biafra and Candye Kane to Sue Foley, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Hal Ketchum. As a songwriter he's written a fairly respectable number of hits.

On this, his second solo album, Ted Roddy really shows us what he's got. As a songwriter Roddy is a Country writer with integrity to spare. Not slick, simply perfect. the musicianship and arranging is as good, if not better, than the over-produce pap coming out of Nashville these days. Roddy is also one heck of a great harmonica player, suiting his playing to the songs, never over-playing. His singing is perfectly suited to the material.

If you want to hear a great, under-rated Country musician, this CD is definitely for you.
