5 out of 5 stars A fine collection, well recorded, & a bargain, to boot!.......2005-10-08

This collection of pieces is a real treat for RVW fans. The recordings of Flos campi (surely one of RVW's most unusual and mystical works, somehow managing to capture the elusive emotional/spiritual environment of the Song of Solomon) and the Suite for Viola and Orchestra (rarely recorded, but a delectable mixing of folk-song, Bach, Bartok-like passages, and rich, resonant melodies redolent of autumn) would be enough in themselves. Couple them with the Six Studies in English Folksong for clarinet & piano (a rare piece of Vaughn Williams chamber music) and the ravishing instrumental version of Serenade to Music, and you have a truly admirable set. This is an assemblage of a number of earlier recordings: in this case, I think, the cream has been skimmed and put into one convenient two-disc collection. The recorded sound is good throughout, and the notes well-written and interesting - an excellent Chandos release.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect and otherworldly.......2003-10-06

I am a rock musician but I must say that there is little other music on this green earth that is as gorgeous as that of Vaughan Williams. Some folk and country airs can touch the melancholy that VW can, some of Bach's or Ravel's pieces maybe. But when I hear music like Flos Campi 2nd and 6th movements, or the beautiful short pieces that comprise Six Studies in English Folk Song ... well, they leave me breathless. Parts of Flos Campi sounds like VW has distilled all the tinsel and magic, childlike wonder and true peace of something as hard to define as Christmas and made it into music. Serenade to Music in it's pure orchestral form still remains a glorius composition, even without the vocalists. My, when it hits that early theme in the latter part with full force and orchestra ... And the lovely Linden Lea and that wonderful Suite ... Almost too much. I sometimes program this and some of his major works, such as Tallis, Dives and Lazarus and The Lark Ascending (when I have some time to spare!): it's a big 'wow' factor. VW's music is unashamedly beautiful, capturing the sweetest folk elements and conjuring up the spirit of the wildest and most remote parts of Britain (in my head at least). This music is something else and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Album Description

This recording leaves the listener breathless and astounded by the musical richness of this small area of Africa. In these performances from remote areas of central Ghana, the collective musical genius of everyday farmers, fisher-folk, traders, and civil servants bursts forth. Their singing and chanting moves through a colorful palette of instruments including water drums, rectangular frame drums, side-blown horns, and brass bands. Clear, penetrating sounds of metal instruments offset by complex drumming patterns are framed by haunting vocals. Listeners are immersed in a kaleidoscope of sound. Thirteen tracks and 28 page booklet including extensive notes and photos. This is the only commercially available recording of Akan music.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2007-06-30

This is a great disc. I whole heartedly review with the former reviewer -- there is so much diversity to just the music of Ghana alone that there is no way to classify it all under one category. So you will need to stretch out and purchase a bunch of different discs with various different styles. This is a good one.

4 out of 5 stars More great music from Ghana. .......2004-11-20

This is a disc completely worthy of your money and time. In case you have family, historical, and/or geographical reasons for wanting to know, the music on this disc is from Ghana's Central Region (not actually in the center of Ghana though, "Central Region" is the name of... for lack of a better term... a state in Ghana). The music is by (and from their areas of the Central Region) Assin, Efutu, Denkyira, and Fante peoples. All are Akan groups except the Efutu, "whose languages belong to the Guan cluster of the Kwa branch". Obviously I got this from the liner-notes, as I am no expert on all the many... and there are MANY... different languages and cultures of Ghana.

As for the music itself, I've had this disc for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it more with each listen. It is a very fine collection of recordings! I didn't get to the liner-notes until yesterday. It was interesting to find out that the Efutu are not Akan, since I had already noticed a distinct difference between the feel of their music and the other (although also differing) musics here. For those with some hip-hop interest, the Efutu track here makes me feel like they are playing some sort of ancient ancestor of a Timbaland beat. I like it alot. =)

There is alot for which to be thankful on this disc, and if you've ever stumbled upon my reviews for a few other cds from Ghana (the Master Drummers of Dagbon 1 & 2, and the Master Fiddlers of Dagbon), you'll be interested in knowing that this disc is completely different from those. Unfortunately, oftentimes things are lumped under the monolithic label of being "African music", but that is so broad as to be almost meaningless, considering the degree of musical diversity even in just one small country like Ghana. If you have the Masters discs I just mentioned, and you're worried about buying this one and feeling like it'd just be more of the same, don't worry. This is a whole other world.

The singing here has a much more organized feel than that on the Masters discs. Also, this disc always has larger groups of singers. It is more of a central feature of the music as well. Some lovely "chorus" vocals, sometimes in the form of interplay with the drumming. What you'll think of the brass band tracks (just a couple), I do not know. I like them, but I'm a weirdo. The first one strikes me almost as William Parker-ish orchestrations of his interpretation of the timbre of a bleating goat. I mean that in a good way. Also the percussion on that track is fantastic! I'm not sure how they are getting this tone, but it's like controlled, perfectly timed fireworks exploding in the distance.

Rather than rambling further, I will wrap this up by saying you probably didn't stumble on this cd by accident, so this sort of thing already interests you. Go ahead and pick this one up because I'm sure you're going to love it.

4 out of 5 stars 1979 field recordings from the Akan coastal areas of Ghana.......2004-03-09

Field recordings of Akan folk music from the Central and Western Regions of Ghana made by ethnomusicologist Roger Vetter in 1979. In this respect the disk is more narrowly homogeneous than some similar ones: only the Central and Western Regions are represented, although the bulk of the Akan population of Ghana lives in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. And, obviously, if it is a disk of Akan music, it does not include music produced by other ethnic groups in Ghana.

What the disk lacks in geographical and ethnic diversity, it makes up in stylistic reach. The music in these recordings is played by non-professional and semi-professional players, and although most of the music is quite traditional (i.e. shows little European influence) some tracks include instruments that originated outside Africa such as the tuba or the electric guitar, and some of the repertoire including waltzes and gospel music show a Western influence transmogrified in the local milieu. In this regard the recordings are authentic: the variety of music produced for local performance and consumption in the Akan coastal regions of Ghana was (and remains) varied, reflecting a variety of cultural uses and influences. While most of the music on this disk was meant for dancing, one of the most interesting tracks is a talking drum piece in which the message is not only played but recited, allowing one to hear the translation from speech to drumming. The accompanying booklet documenting the cultural background, the players, their instruments, and the various musical styles is highly informative.

Album Description

A cross-over artist defying definition, Amy X Neuburg twists multiple musical styles—from cabaret and hard rock to classical—together into something all her own. Her wildly inventive lyrics range from the poignant to the absurd, touching on social and political issues in surprisingly personal ways.

The 12 songs on "Residue" capture the spirit of Amy's live performances, where she loops and processes her voice, accompanying herself with rhythms and textures using electronic drums. The madness of "Residue" includes a comic soliloquy on stoned late-night shopping, hard-driving declarations on God, a lovely tender ballad "Finally Black," an ethereal telephone conversation between the artist and herself, and, at the peak of "The Tattoo Song," a demonic, cackling, three-octave "Ahhhhhhhhh" juxtaposed with a saintly ninth century Lacrimosa chorus.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Intense, original musical delight.......2006-04-02

"Residue" was plugged by Amazon on a page for something else strange I bought, one of those "you may also like" or "people who bought this CD also bought" ads. I read the description and it sounded interesting, so I bought it on spec. As a famous dead Chicagoan one said, HOLY COW! She is sort of a Laurie Anderson for the 21st Century, only with a classically trained voice. There are elements of rock, minimalism, 50s and 60s electronic music, Broadway, old-fashioned country & western, Wagnerian wailing soprano, religious hymns and chant and, yes, the adored Ms. Anderson herself. It is fascinating to hear her pour out both her gutsy and fragile sides with such novel expression. This is the freshest thing I've heard since I first encountered Michael Gordon. For people who want their ears and brains challenged while having sonic fun at the same time, this disk is a must-buy. Her three earlier CDs, all from the 90s, are available from independent dealers affiliated with Amazon. I await their arrival.

5 out of 5 stars the sounds of visionary voice from an electronic perspective.......2005-02-06

Amy X Neuburg is so cool & hip & brilliant! I first found out about her because she performed in an avant-garde classical music festival in NYC, & she stood out to me because her personality is very energetic & her music ideas are so unique. The music on this cd is so intricately, perfectly composed! Her lyrics are always right on in terms of their clever humorous quality AND the sounds of each syllable AND dramatic tension. She really balances everything in the world so well. She did a concert in New Zealand in late 2004, & the review in the newsaper there said that she had apparently gone to the future & taken the future's sounds back to here for her music! She makes music with her voice that I've never heard anything else sound like. & she makes equally brilliant exciting with so much else too!! From static & music to sing while skipping across a bar to a toothbrush & piano, from weird maudlin warbles & mutters to, finally, in harmony with a great whorl of voices, her glistening billowing collected classical voice you could hear over an orchestra (or over a studio full of computers). Monologues, strange telephone calls, meditative monotone chanting, lots of fun. This is one of my favorite CD's! I hope this review has been helpful to you!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing Album.......2004-11-01

This album has the capability of appealing to fans of pop music as much as lovers of the art-rock avant garde. The lyrics are personal yet accessible. The looping and other means of electronic production do nothing but enhance her musical efforts, not distract from them. With such a tremendous voice, hearing six layers of it at the same time translates to an amazing music exerience. The focus really is on the songs, the electronics are there to enrich the compositional intent. You don't feel like you are in the middle of sampler and drum machine circus. Everything is written and performed by her, frequently many layers at a time. It is hard to pinpoint any one artist that would be comparable to her work. There are however, some tracks that could be compared to the work of others ("Residue" has elements of Bobby McFerrin's "Circlesongs," "Finally Black" has the lyrical stylings of an Afro-Celts tune, and "Stone" seems like a Philip Glass opera gone rock). With one person composing, performing, and producing everything, the result is an album full of well-crafted songs that will impress any listener. I can't speak highly enough about it... BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars As good as her live concerts.......2004-06-15

I was waiting for this album, and I'm not disappointed.

Amy X Neuburg performs solo multi-track musical compositions live using her voice, a looping machine, and a drum-pad controlled synthesizer. Each performance starts from nothing and builds as she layers rhythm and harmony into the loop. Add to this her incredible voice and creativity, and you've got something that must be heard.

The Residue album provides studio recordings of a number of songs as I remember them being performed live. I consider this an important quality of the album because part of a live Amy X experience is the awe that one feels realizing that the complex songs are being created and mixed just as one is listening. That said, I feel that many of the recordings have been enhanced or edited in just a few places, which is only to be expected. This is a studio recording, not a live performance. But most of the time the differences from Amy X's incredible live performances are subtle, and improve the song.

The album includes my favorite Amy X songs: Stone, Every Little Stain (the toothbrush song, listen at the beginning), My God (with its a cappella harmony), Insomniac, Just a Sound, and Life Stepped In.

The launch of Jon's own Sugar Apple imprint in 2001 has made his music even better because he now has total creative and artistic control. A Time For Love is Jon's fourth release on Sugar Apple and yet another masterpiece. Musically Jon keeps his fans satisfied with the special blend of jazz, latin, and soul, a niche he has cared successfully for himself over the years. Except for one cut the songs are all cover versions, but there's no need to worry that you get the umpteenth version of songs you're tired of hearing because you have heard them too often. In fact, all songs get the Jon Lucien treatment that turns these songs into something special and makes you wonder if the songs haven't longed to be recorded this way all the time.

Teardrop and Lost both feature great guitar work and Paul's vocal skills are second to none. Hailey Rose is another stand out track that tells a moving story.

In the days where true artists are considered to be Ashlee Simpson, it is refreshing to see a musician that composes and actually plays original music.

      Album Description

12 melodic rock songs about love, loss and real life, driven home by smart guitars, punchy rhythms and laid-bare vocals. Written, performed and produced by guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Mudd with Seattle bassist Andrew Luthringer (Jessie Turner, Monica Pasqual/Blame Sally, Percy Howard), North Carolina guitarist Terry C. McInturff (Safehouse, Debra DeMilo), and mixed and mastered by Steve Gronback (Black Crowes, Rain Parade, The Connells, Cry of Love, Tommy Keene).

5 out of 5 stars Downright good stuff.......2005-02-16

Like the Replacements or the Connells? Then you'll like Mudd. (You Steely Dan fans will be impressed, too.) Lots of catchy guitars and melodies -- "In Another Lifetime" and "Hiding the Gray" will be in your head for days. And if you appreciate a cool instrumental, check out "Did You Bring the Tickets?"

      5 out of 5 stars A Reawakening.......2004-12-30

Cynicism is a way of life for a fifty-something with failing hearing. Somewhere, sometime, somebody has already done it all anyway.

Mudd gives the lie to all of that. Strings that are at once crisp and mellow, with vocals so honest, he could be singing to himself...but he doesn't mind if you listen in.

The surrounding musicians don't sound like structural support, but are integral to the message; the message that Mudd is more than worth paying attention to, he's a perceptive student of humanity, with a unique and enjoyable voice. It's a reason to get excited about music again.

      4 out of 5 stars "A fetching collection of riff-happy rockers...".......2004-12-09

The following review was reprinted from The Washington Post, Wednesday, December 8, 2004; Page C05

<<District denizen Jonathan Mudd once received the highest compliment a fringe-dwelling pop-rocker could ask for: praise from Marshall Crenshaw.

When Crenshaw received, unsolicited, a record by Mudd's new-wave-era outfit, the Shake, the skinny-tie hall-of-famer shot back a note saying, "I'm not sure who you are or why you sent me this record, but thanks. It's good."

If Crenshaw happens to find a copy of Mudd's latest CD, "Any Good Heaven," in his mailbox this holiday season, chances are he'll go for it, too: The album is a treat, a fetching collection of riff-happy rockers that never forgo the catchy parts.

Set opener "Outside Looking In" glides by on shimmery guitars and a fat, arena-ready chorus. The slinky "Feel So Real" detours into that '70s era via multitracked lead lines that practically quote Cheap Trick. And hook for hook, "Coming Home" is as strong as anything on the last Fountains of Wayne album -- "Stacy's Mom" excluded, of course.

Like the Fountains of late, Mudd can be a tougher sell lyrically, particularly when he waxes direct when just a suggestion would do. The subtitle of the otherwise ace "In Another Lifetime" is "All Right Alone," for instance, and although the Who-ish "Hiding the Gray" scores with a snarling, bell-bottomed outro, the tune would be better if Mudd rinsed out the forty-something angst.

For fans of smart guitars and tuneful melody-making, though, "Any Good Heaven" is a real find, one that -- as Crenshaw perhaps already knows -- could make a great pop-rock stocking stuffer.

5 out of 5 stars Great new sound on Mudd's debut CD.......2004-12-09

Jonathan Mudd has got a great sound on his debut CD. One will hear echoes of REM, the Pretenders, Marshall Crenshaw, but Mudd produces something entirely original. His guitar work is sweet and clean. His lyrics are at once thoughtful, insightful, and catchy. The musicians he pulled together blend seamlessly. No doubt "Perfect Day" (as well as "Outside Looking In" and several others) could make it as singles if they get a chance. Treat yourself to this CD.
