THE FRENCH BARBARA.......2001-11-30

BARBARA was a singer who struggled many years before success came her way in the sixties.She created a sort of intimate character that ones recognize rapidly.BARBARA's songs are often autobiographical;such is the case here with RÉMUSAT and MON ENFANCE who are obviously about her mother.There is also a sad BARBARA,in FRENCH,we call this le mal de vivre, that is present everywhere in her discography.Maybe some people can find her a little depressing,but there is always a warm humanity about her.Selections of live recordings was a good idea,since there was a special love story between the fans and the artist.With BARBARA,the feeling was never artificial,it was real.

Berlioz wrote very difficult music for the tenor voice, music which is not reminiscent of any other composer. The rhythms are unique, and the leaps to high notes are somewhat uncomfortable. Like other composers, he wrote for different types of tenors, from light and lyrical to the truly dramatic. Here Roberto Alagna, in possibly his finest recording, sings them all, from the delicate narrator in L'enfance du Christ and gentle poet Iopas in Les Troyens to the somewhat grander Benvenuto Cellini, and on finally to the Siegmund-like Aeneas. Each is imbued with true character, and Alagna's range cannot help but impress; he even sings the sweet, high C-sharps of the duet from La damnation de Faust with ease (his Marguerite is his wife, Angela Gheorghiu). Rarities here are a song sung by Mephistopheles in an earlier work based on Faust when the role was composed for tenor, and some music from the half-sung, half-spoken drama Lelio (the actor Gerard Depardieu is the speaker). This is a great collection, and it's Alagna at his most superb. A must for opera lovers of all tastes. --Robert Levine

Bravo for Yu Qiang Dai.......2005-01-28

It was a big shock to hear Yu Qiang Dai's debut cd. He is, I think, the best lirico-spinto tenor nowadays. He has a lovely voice, which is very well produced. The center is wonderful, the lower notes are good, the high notes are shining and of fantastic quality... the singing through the passage is very well handled. He is an itelligent musical interpreter and singer, with an interesting and appealing line and sense of style. Very good dynamic changes. He offers some of the absolutely best renditions of some arias (nessun dorma and cielo e mar, for example) that I have heard in many years.

He still has to work his Italian (specially the consonants) and his French. But there were great historical tenors with bigger idiomatical problems.

Despite taking spinto repertoire, Yu never pushes, never tries to make the voice sound darker than it is, everything is always under control, and he takes the chance to give very stylish renditions (for example, of una furtiva lagrima), which is strange for tenors who "want to sing spinto".
The tenor is a fantastic discovery, one of the best ones around. Actually, all my criticism goes to EMI and the production of the CD: no choirs, no solists (for example, for the aria of Cavalleria, where the mother should sing her line), and the acoustic "atmosphere" has made some people to doubt if Yu's voice is really as big as it seems (people who saw his Cavaradossi at Covent Garden say that it is very big, actually).
Not a the best production job by the people of EMI, but five stars (ten if possible) for the singer. Simply wonderful.

Anyone who wants to enjoy one of the greatest tenors in our lifetime will play this brilliant and beautifully produced collection endlessly and grow to love it as one of the greatest ever vocal recitals. Sit back with a fine bottle of wine and marvel at a magnificent singer who sings with beautifully shaded vocal beauty and emotional depth that is spectacular and rare in the wonderful world of music!!! Roberto Alagna is a superb French stylist, as one would hope to find in a native Frenchman. Moreover, his voice is well-suited to the extremes of Berlioz' writing - it's not a huge voice, which is very much to his advantage, since he can control his piano singing and provide nuances that other singers don't. And unlike most French-style tenors, Alagna's voice has enough bottom weight and more than enough ping to avoid being too nasally or tweety. There's a lot of emotion in his work as well as intelligence, and I really like the way he shows us new ways of hearing... every singer's voice is individual, very different, and that's especially true of tenors - Alagna's not afraid to explore that. Berlioz is a great match for him. It's one of my favorite CDs.

What audacity!!!!!.......2004-05-27

To record Mephistofele's Serenade, something Berlioz wrote for a BASS to sing, is pure folly. Also, why isn't the Serenade accompanied by more than one musical instrument? Where is the rest of the orchestra? Berlioz wrote the Serenade for more than one instrument!

Listening to Alagna's nasal, metallic tenor voice is torture beyond belief! Avoid this CD at all costs!

Charpentier's short Latin oratorio on the denial of St. Peter may have been intended for performance in a Holy Week church service, but it is among the most dramatic works he ever wrote. The dialogue is set as believably as in any opera; Peter's increasingly frantic denials as questions from the bystanders (sung by voices in the chorus) swirl around him are gripping; the grinding, anguished dissonances in the final chorus (on the words "and wept bitterly") are stunning. The Lenten meditations for male voices that complete the disc are less dramatic, but beautifully somber. (They include, by the way, a fascinating reduction for three voices of the St. Peter oratorio.) --Matthew Westphal

French Baroque Organ.......2004-05-03

Nicolas de Grigny (1672-1703) published one book of organ music, roughly half of which is a mass and the other half consists of hymns. This is a recording of the music for mass, performed by Pierre Bardon, playing the historic organ of Saint-Maximim-en-Provence.

Although Grigny introduced no new forms he enriched the traditional ones in various ways. No composer of the French classical organ school demanded more of the pedals, and few exploited the contrasting colours of the organ more vividly. In other respects too Grigny's work is more distinguished than that of his predecessors and contemporaries: in richness of texture, complexity of counterpoint, expressiveness of melodic embellishment, seriousness of purpose and intensity of feeling. He had no immediate French successors either in these aspects or in his use of liturgical material: rather is his work a summation of that of his predecessors. Bach paid it the tribute of copying it in its entirety for his own study and use about 1713.
