Keali'i Reichel Collection is probably the best of the Hawaiian music collection that I have. The music contained in KAMAHIWA is for listening and for dancing. I enjoy this CD so much as do my students.

This is the most wonderfully tender, majestic, spirited, magical album I've heard in years!

The CD of chants is amazing. If you're still sitting down after a track or two, and your mind isn't reeling with curiosity about the ancient culture of Hawaii, you might need antidepressants...or maybe just the other CD in the set.

The second CD is the most lovely collection of meles. Pure acoustic nurturance! Seriously, if life has you down, do yourself a huge favor - sit or lie down in a cozy spot, close your eyes, and listen to "Maunaleo," the first track...and be warned, you may not want to get moving again until the end of the album. It's too lovely to rush away from.

I can't say enough about this collection. In a nutshell, if you love exquisitely moving music, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Beautiful singing; great, relaxing CD.......2006-06-06

All my life, I wanted to visit Hawa'ii. On May 15th, 2006, I finally did (!), and the experience was even better than I had anticipated. What I did not anticipate, however, was how beautiful Hawa'iian music is. While driving around the island of Oahu (one of the more popular islands of Hawa'ii) and soaking in the sights, I would just listen to the radio and hum to the music.

Now I'm back in the mainland (Maryland,to be specific) wishing I could have stayed in that amazing place just a little longer. Yet, I did manage to bring some Hawa'iian music back home, and Kealii's cd is the most enjoyable, and the most relaxing, of all the music I brought back.

The 1st cd in Kealii's collection reminds me of the great people I got to meet while staying on the island. The music is warm, friendly, and sounds as if it is sung from the soul. The 2nd cd reminds me of the land itself, full of history and culture, impressive in it's majesty, yet respectful of the great ocean of the pacific. The chants on this cd are very impressive - they take you away.

Hawa'ii is a wonderful place, rich in culture; filled with gorgeous landscapes (and forests, and beaches, and oceans), friendly people, delicious food, and wonderful music. I recommend this cd to those looking for a taste of what that unforgettable island has to offer.

I listened to this music (my daughter is half Hawaiian) when my daughter was a baby ten years ago and it would always soothe her and put her to sleep because it's so soothing and beautiful. Now, my son, when he teeths he is inconsolible! He will not stop for a bottle, to be rocked, sang to, put down in his bed, etc. But I play this, and not even 3 seconds later, he is on his way to la la land. It is wonderful. I recommend it to any parent! Or anyone who wants to de-stress.

Keali'i Reichel has such a nice mellow voice.
His Music is so soothing and Kawaipunahele is my favorite CD of his works!
Keali'i Reichel includes familar songs along with the Hawaiian theme that puts you in a very mellow mood.
Only wish I had this CD when my kids were all small.
I have bought two of this CD one I bought in Hawaii and this one I bought for my girlfriend because she drives a Limo and would use it in the Limo.

Feel the Spirit of Aloha.......2006-02-08

I bought this CD on Maui, listened to it while we were there, brought it home and listened to it and, thanks to the included lyrics, learned the words to all the songs. I don't speak much Hawaiian, but I now can sing some songs in Hawaiian. Keali'i Reichel has a wonderful voice, great talent, a love for Hawaiian traditions and his legacy, and I can feel the Spirit of Aloha as he sings the songs on this CD.

As you know, all of Keali'i's CD's are recommended. This one was his debut CD, released in 1994. It features traditional Hawaiian favorites such as "Akaka Falls," as well as original compositions including "E Ho'i I Ka Pili," "Kauanoeanuhea," and the title track, "Kawaipunahele." It also contains cover versions of The Beatles' "In My Life" and Sticks' "Come Sail Away." Keali'i's chanting comes across at the beginning of "In My Life" and in the last track, "He Mele Inoa No Kawaipunahele." Be sure to pick this one up!

Stop Reading Just Buy This Album.......2006-11-30

WOW!!! What can I write about Paula Fuga that does her any justice? She is N'Dea meets Lauren channeling Roberta Flack backed by a sick combo that sounds like the Funk Brothers meets Sly & Robbie with a healthy dose of the I-Threes. There are so many layers to her songs, the delicate guitars, the percussions, the soulful piano and jazz organ, although, you almost miss it because her voice is so compelling. This girl is a STAR!!! (Incidentally, she was passed up by Simon, Randy and Paula... the talented need not apply)

Her music is magical and intoxicating because its easy going grooves are contrasted so beatifully by the power of her sultry voice. The album is a collection of genres: she starts with a tortured a capella tune a la "Killing Me Softly" then slinks into a tight reggae cut that would feel at home on one of Peter or a Bob's albums, then its onto a breathy R&B torch number that puts Gladys and Aretha to shame. Yes, she's that good. She's Eva Cassidy good. She seamlessly slips from folk, to blues to reggae.

What's more incredible is Paula Fuga is just a regular person with (as of 2005)a boring job in some lousy Hawaiian tourist trap. She is largely unknown outside of Hawaii and the only reason I know about her is a friend from the Pacific Rim turned me onto her album over Thanksgiving. Want more? I LOVE the title track. Love it! But the rest of the album isn't so great. I feel that she's got a ton of talent and potential but needs more cohesion and polish. She needs to develop her own style. But her voice is powerful and gorgeous and I'll buy the next album.

I discovered Paula Fuga's music listening to the local Hawaiian station during my vacation to the Big Island. Ms. Fuga's power house voice explodes with soulful and expressive reggae/R&B quality combined with a mixture of modern and Hawaiian lyrics makes for an incredible first album. My fave song is lilikoi! Check out this incredible woman.

Every Day's a Holiday When You Listen to "Meluhia".......2006-11-23

Hawaii and Christmas typically are usually placed in the same sentence for the novelty and humor they lend to each other. Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sister's "Mele Kalikimaka" or the hapa-hoale "(How'd You Like to Have) Christmas on Christmas Island?" are the typical Hawaiian Holiday tunes most listeners are exposed to. Funny, silly and Wow! No snow-it's a coconut palm sort of world! Wacky!!

Plenty of local Hawaiian and Hawaiian-inspired artists have released collections of holiday music. Rejecting novelty (well, most of the time...) local musicians have created holiday music that includes the Hawaiian language, the Protestant missionaries musical foundations and the melding of musical forces from all over the Pacific.

The George Winston-produced and distributed Holiday Slack Key collections successfully bring gentle island melodies to the most frigid of environments. Some artists, like Hapa and Na Leo, have released recordings for the holidays that are warm embraces of aloha and holiday cheer. Keali'i Reichel's holiday offering, "Maluhia," mixes the familiar with a twist-"Silent Night" sung in English and Hawaiian, "Merry Christmas, Darling" with a male chorus and slack key guitar and "O Holy Night" as a non-tour-de-force rendition but rather a gentle retelling of Christ's birth with 'cello. All these new takes on the old work well because, like all other superior holiday musical releases, Reichel mixes the familiar with the novel in a way that stays true to the original intent of the songwriter but exposes another facet or truth in the composition.

Unlike previous releases, Reichel does not offer any traditional Hawaiian chant or hula. The bracing, nasal yowl of a voice that Reichel would unleash in a chant and then temper in a Beatles's cover (See his version of "In My Life" on his debut album, "Kawaipunahele" for a moving example)is gone on this release-and probably rightly so. Reichel 's voice is soothing, folksy, and above all, warm. "Remind me of Home" and "Till the Season Comes 'Round Again" are nostalgic and longing memories that display an uncommon and sweet grace whether the listener is in Kahala or Kansas. Dan Fogelberg and Kenny Loggins are probably wishing that their A&R guys had found these wonderful songs first for their Christmas albums.

Reichel's unabashed love and pride in the Hawaiian language are right up front. "Nu 'Oli," the opening track, a 19th century Protestant hymn and "Ke Aloha Kalikimaka," a new composition, are gorgeous sonic portraits of the spirit of Christmas. It is the new Christmas carol by long time Reichel collaborator and University of Hawaii professor Dr. Puakea Nogelmeier, "Ke Au Maluhia" that will most likely move you to tears. One can imagine this song sung in the snow or the sands, always with love and reverence for family.

You won't go around working the room to this music. "Maluhia" is an album that invites you to read and reflect on the lyrics in the collection and the meaning of the season. Christmas and Hawaii are treated as partners on a journey-not polar opposites. And with Keali'i Reichel as your guide, you could not have a better journey. Be sure you have your Streisand, Crosby and Williiams CDs-but this year when you're cleaning up after the holiday dinner or perhaps setting up the tree alone, put on this CD and remember the joy and loss and be glad for this mele and aloha.

Blissfull nostalgia of mankind's past........2004-04-02

For a long time I have been a fan of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. The late folk singer introduced me to "island music" and my musical palate was satisfied,for a while. I later began listening to Cusco (another breathtaking act) but nothing has been as emotional,as astounding,or as reflective as Reichel.
Yes,I say reflective. Like an object in space that travels at the speed of light,I was everywhere at once while listening to this cd. This cd actually brought me to tears,and I don't even understand the language!
Anyway,Amazon.com is a great place to purchase cds. Not only does Amazon have cheap prices but they also have the largest selection of world music that I have seen in years.

Whether it's ukulele music, the island exotica of Martin Denny, the lounge crooning of Don Ho, or the slack key acoustic guitar tradition, many styles of music have emerged from the jeweled necklace in the Pacific known as Hawaii. Over the course of five albums, popular singer Keali'i Reichel (pronounced kay-ah-LEE-ee rye-SHELL) touches on both commercial adult contemporary songcraft and traditional ukulele and hula dance accompaniment--he was a noted hula dance instructor and cultural historian before becoming a professional musician. The Grammy-nominated Ke' Alaokamaile is the singer's tribute to his family, singing about his ancestors and his own life so far. While there a gloss on many of these contemporary songs (even when sung Hawaiian) that no doubt gives them a broad pop appeal--Reichel also does a sentimental but somewhat empty version of Sting's "Fields Of Gold"--the traditional songs are strong enough to prove Reichel's versatility. What can I say?.......2005-08-30

Everyone else who reviewed this album has basically said it all. I have all five of Keali'i's CD's and can hardly wait for a sixth to come. You don't have to know the Hawaiian language to enjoy his music; even I only know a few phrases. His voice is beautiful and very soothing, especially if you're stressed, unhappy, or you can't get to sleep. My two favorite songs on this CD are "Ka Nohona Pili Kai" and "Mele 'Ohana," which is sung in both Hawaiian and English. I also love his rendition of Sting's "Fields of Gold." Keali'i is a great chanter as well. This is shown in "He Lei No Kamaile" and "Lei Hana I Ka Makani Ualau Awa." A recommended CD for all!

Felt Like Puppy Love.......2005-05-04

I'm so sorry to say but I really did NOT like this CD. The tunes were pretty similar and felt like puppy love songs. There were very few of the Hawaiian style songs that I like and look forward to from Keali'i Reichel but not enough to make me like the whole CD. I am donating mine to the library...

The Best Album I've Ever Heard.......2005-04-15

I own and enjoy all of Keali`i Reichel's albums but Ke`alaokamaile is the best. Everything about it is wonderful; from the booklet that comes with it to the final song. I always enjoy his chants and this CD has two excelent ones. My favorite song on this album is "Ka Nohana Pili Kai". All his songs are simply beautiful.

My family and I plan to fly from Arkansas to attend his September 11, 2005 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I would only do that for an exceptional artist. I'm looking forward to his next album. This one will be hard to top.

The music is pure, in true Keali`i fashion that his fans love. I had tears in my eyes the first time I listened to "Ka Nohona Pili Kai". Wow. Another fine album from this fine artist. His voice caresses the Hawaiian language, already one of the most beautiful languages on earth. His Hawaiian sounds like the Hawaiian that the kupuna speak. Combine that with the masterful poetry of the amazing Puakea Nogelmeier, and you've got music that is timeless. Whenever I listen to Keali`i singing, it makes me soooo homesick for Hawai`i. If that weren't enough, Keali`i is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet -- and so is Puakea. They both still live in Hawai`i and they don't have the big head because they are famous. Buy this album, buy all of his albums. You won't be disappointed.

Mackey Feary is the Best.......2007-04-03

I like the song "Inarajan", which is a village on the U.S. Territory Of Guam, where Mackey, lived for few years. The group held "FREE" concerts back then. The group was more popular in Japan. Kalapana, in my opinion is one of the best bands that came out of Hawaii.

Hawaii's Golden Age of Soft/Pop.......2003-02-11

This compilation is the pinnacle of Hawaii's pop golden age in the seventies. The local-pop market here has since morphed with strong roots and raga-reggae influences. The late Mackey Feary's smooth melodies well represent island romance while Malani Bilyeu's voice flares with traditional island fervor. The lyrical content is simply skillful. The vocal harmonizations and instrumental mix are uplifting. Every track is a champion.

Best of Kalapana Vol. 1.......2001-07-03

The 13 tracks on this CD present Kalapana's best and most accessible tracks in one neat single-disc package. This has all their most-played songs on Hawaii pop radio during their 70's run, splitting the tracks evenly among the two vocalists: Mackey Feary's light jazzy delivery is countered with Malani Bilyeu's wistful introspective crooning. Although this may lack a few important cuts such as the jazzy, experimental "Black Sand", I highly recommend this CD as an introduction to this group for those who like light romantic soft rock. The best tracks include "Night Bird", "For You I'd Chase a Rainbow", and the Hall & Oates cover of "When the Morning Comes."

Gypsy Soul has some of the best music I've ever heard when it comes to Celtic, Folk, Love songs, etc. Everybody should give them a listen, not only because of the great vocals but also because of the mood they set and put you in while listening to them! Give them a try!

A journey worth taking..........2002-11-19

Amazing! All the tracks on this album are noteworthy, but a few really stand out, in particular the opening track, Promises and Lies, and track #3, Who. This is music which makes you think, then carries you beyond thinking and into a much deeper place. The arrangements are exquisite and the vocals soar. Highly, highly recommend.

There are bands whose music speaks to the head banging animal, clawing its way up from the darkness, within us all. Ok I am here! I have arrived at my destination! I have heard one of the best cd's that I have ever heard! Gypsy Soul is just the best. As I sat listening to this beautiful cd I felt peace, love, joy, sadness, longing and some of the best music that is available today! Cilette's voice is THE BEST female voice in the music industry today. I mean it.....after you listen to her sing, tell me who can you think of that is better? Roman is a MASTER on the guitar & bass! I think this is a must purchase for anyone who is into music!

I heard most of this CD over the course of an evening spent at a Hawaiian concert. Robi was not there, but her friend Bu La'ia was supposed to show up. (He was featured on the song Pi`i Mai Ka Nalu. Some story came through that he'd been arrested at the airport for wearing roller skates.)

I especially like the last track which was dedicated to her grandfather (I think). Infectious jazzy thing!

GREAT HAPPY CD.......2002-05-28

If it's a sunny day, put this CD in and you'll have the perfect music. It has a variety of songs from Hawaiian to reggae. I had the pleasure of hanging out with her this weekend after a concert with the Makaha sons, and I must say I am a fan for life. Not only is she one of the most kindest people I've met, but her voice and music is fantastic, too. I had no idea this CD was going to be as good as it was. Robi, I am yours.

Even if you're not a fan of Hawaiian music, Robi Kahakalau has an undeniable voice that can fit any style of music. She has had a string of hit songs in Hawai'i that will no doubt become standards in the future. Includes "Ku`u Hoa" and a nice cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me".

Sistah Robi makes you feel like you're in paradise..........2001-05-26

I bought this CD without knowing anything about Robi. I now have all three of her solo CD's and consider her one of my favorite singers. This CD has a pretty even mix of English and Hawaiian language songs. Listening to this can turn a cold, snowy, dreary day into a warm, sunny, breezy day no matter where you live. She creates a feeling of being in a Hawaiian paradise through descriptive songs about the beauty, fun and appreciation of the islands. She does a lovely rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me," by Bonnie Raitt, and reveals a soulful side with "God Bless The Fool," as well as a no-nonsense attitude on "Take Care Of Me." There are also translations for the Hawaiian numbers, which prove to be quite poetic. This is simply a cheerful and wonderful CD.
